    The entertainment industry as a whole is predatory and exploitative. It shouldn’t be understated that children are the most vulnerable and unfortunately reap the underbelly of the heinous and asinine things behind close doors.

      100% absolutely. I think we either need to completely reform the child's star industry, or just ban it until the kid is 16 or something. Because it's bad bad.

    Poor Jennette, the title of her memoirs REALLY says a lot about how toxic her childhood was at being the main provider. I hope that she's in a happier place now that she's no longer in front of the camera.

    I have noticed that some, if not most, of the few child stars whose career and public image has been relatively stable or at least eventually became stable, had someone to ground them, guide them, and protect them, and usually they are family. Right off the bat I can think of two examples in Hollywood. Selena Gomez and Saoirse Ronan, and based on what I have gathered, their mothers were right next to them in the workplace to protect them. I heard that Selena's mother was literally her manager and I read an interview from a Bazaar magazine where Saoirse admitted her mother's immediate presence shielded her from many of the mistreatments of towards little girls within the industry. Perhaps a more recent example is Billie Ellish, as she had her brother right next to her to help her through her musical journey and emotional turmoil. Hell, even Miley Cyrus eventually settled down and even during her crazy phase she never did anything drastic or dangerous because she had a support system which was her family. Then you have examples like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, who clearly had problems within their families and had no one to rely on, and we all know how they spiraled, even if they are doing better now.

    • @CassieTranthesuperfitbabe
      @CassieTranthesuperfitbabe 2 года назад +29

      I also notice that some child stars take a break from Hollywood once they grow older to go back to school or live their normal lives. Emma Watson is another example where she still acts now but it's not her whole career, same with Miranda Cosgrove going back to school and then coming back to some smaller projects that led her to the iCarly reboot. I feel bad for the child actors and musicians who are scooped up by predatory agencies and inadequately protected by family members who prioritize money over wellbeing.

      Or one of the parents literally have to stick with their child 24/7. Typically taking on the role of their child's manager or coach officically. Heard Selena Gomez's mom was actually her manager at some point and Kim Yuna the figure skater's mom became her coach. And apprently Saoirse Ronan's mom was literally with her at the set a lot of the times.

    I agree our society definitely plays a part in it. The adults that would give the child actors substances as well. When the child actors gets in trouble legally, we as a society blame them & look at them as problem children. But it's the adults around them who gives them these substances & go scott free from us as a society.
    (Edit) I forgot to add that we need to unpack further on the patriarchy. How we as a society seggualize purity & innocence. That allows this environment to happen. We as a society need to unpack that. Because we are putting children, especially child actors in danger.

    My daughter was a child actor for a short time. She enjoyed it but the red flag for me was the adultification. For the first film she did, the wardrobe woman gave her a business card and told her to call if she needed any instructions for the next day. She was seven years old at the time. They spoke to her like an adult. After the film, she did a few small tv shows and decided to quit because she got braces. But, you can see that if you're adultified at seven, the situations you are placed in will be extremely adult. That's a really dangerous thing if you are unsupervised.
    On rejection: Rejection is part of show business. People tell you "no" all the time. You stand in line for an audition, you do your best, then you never hear from them again. For a child, it can be demoralizing. My daughter's agent explained it to her like this: "You're a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup. You're popular and delicious. The casting agent is a shopper. Some days he's looking for chicken noodle and he picks you. But, today, he wanted lentil. You're still popular and perfectly delicious, you just weren't what he was shopping for today." Can you imagine?
    I worked while she dabbled and we only got into it acting because she wanted to know how Kevin got into Home Alone. It was a learning experiment. So, when it was over, we moved on. She's a grown-up now and this was eons ago.

    Ok so, unpopular opinion but I think most kids from this gen are gonna have a childhood waaaay more similar to child actors than us (social media started when I was abt 14yo).
    Like fr, these kids grow up seeing themselves on camera, comparing themselves to other influencers in looks, popularity, etc. and also, a lot of these kids are made to play a certain role for their parents’ or siblings’ tiktoks, they probably will have a lot of doubt about their real identity… I remember the cast of Harry Potter said they felt weird when ppl called them by their real name!!

      Not to mention social media puts kids on predators’ radar just like child actors, they’ll also have more pressure to drink, do drgs, have s**, etc… idk everything you’re saying in this video, I think it could apply to what I think kids today will experience in the future (and are experiencing rn too!)
      Psychology really needs to catch up to educate parents on how to avoid these things to happen to child actors and children in general.

    You did a great job of bringing to light a lot of points that are often overlooked at first glance. Especially how being a child star can actually close off a lot of future professional opportunities. Luckily times are changing, but it’s sad when people still have the mindset that fame is something that child stars should be grateful for (even though most of the time they have no say in their early career), regardless of any costs.

  • @AikiraBeats
    @AikiraBeats 2 года назад +13

    The industry needs a big change in regards to child stars. For starters, they need social media counseling on how they should use it so that it doesn't backfire on them later. Along with having therapist that are equipped with handling any social media backflash. Because having millions of people talk about how they don't like you on a constant basis can be damaging for your mental health, since you feel that you can't really tell your side of the story. Also, just how to manage your relationships within the public eye, that to me is a big one especially for the girls, since they are the ones who'll be traumatized after a bad break up. AKA Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

    Yeah, it's not something you often think about but considering children's rights, etc . no child should ever be the main provider for a family. On the one hand, I can see how it may not be on purpose, if they're being paid better than the parents what can you do about it. But that's how they will inevitably be exploited and forced to keep going. I don't know what the exact solution would be but this should definitely be regulated and controlled in such way that no child should be forced to continue because they're the main provider in a family. Children should be allowed to drop all of that immediately even if they're making more than heir parents.

    I think every minor who goes into showbiz should be given a mandatory trust fund where a portion or most of their earnings are put into, and nobody including their parents or guardians are allowed to touch. This money should be watched over by a independent trustee who can build wealth for them, and only made available to the child actor the moment they turn 18.

    I have noticed that it seems like the child actors who grew up and didn’t go through that public tumultuous phase usually had parents who were super involved in their careers when they were younger. I immediately think of Raven-Symone, Zendaya and Skai Jackson who commented on how involved their parents were in the early days of their career. Sometimes part of the issue is that the parents aren’t hands-on enough or too passive which makes it that much easier for the industry to take advantage of the child star.

    This is quite timely considering Tom Holland has just left social media. Ok he's not a child star now, but he was and he was very young (19) when he broke through with Spiderman. It helps when they have their break throughs a bit later with more support circles however your late teens and 20s is when you are literally finding out who you are and who you want to be. And he's kind of been typecast now as this wholesome adorable lovable kid. But he needs to break free from the toxic Hollywood fame narrative, especially as he's dating one of the highest profile actresses who happens to be a former disney star.. they are in a Hollywood melting pot that will eventually be consumed. The higher you rise, the harder you fall. I hope many other young stars do the same and quit social media which feeds the engine of the toxic media which aim to ruin young stars just because they want to make a few $$.

    We need to just stop allowing child actors at this point, we have the technology to recreate this role, these children cannot consent to a life of fame nor stress of this role. I know it's probably never going to happen but it's truly the only way to protect our children. Not exactly a child actor but I know a girl who's life from birth to early teenagerhood was documented on a reality TV show (the family vloggers before family vloggers), along with her siblings and there's such lasting repercussions on their entire family.
