My wife and I spent nearly 4 years total time apart during my 10 years time on active duty with just 4 of my deployments alone, not including 2 of hers and TDYs. 3 of 4 of my deployments were all during 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, her and my birthdays, and our anniversary. My last Christmas in Afghanistan with our Charlie Brown Christmas tree nearly broke me because it hit me hard how much time I had missed of my 4 year old son’s life. Service members sacrifice more than people can even comprehend because it’s not a job, it’s a way of life, and only those who serve truly understand. My heart goes out to those missing home this time of year.

Even with their 11 Carriers, the US needs, at times, for some one else to "take the weight" on the Seas & Oceans of the world - that is why the two UK Carriers are so vital. The recent deployment of the QE to the Baltic demonstrates this.

I did watch the First Sea Lords testimony a few weeks ago. He came across as competent and capable despite the difficulties his office is facing.
I was however disappointed he didn't call for the UK to expand the Number of surface combatants. (He avoids the question)
He was saying that as apart of NATO, out allies would cover shortfalls in capability/coverage with the royal navy.
Multi nation taskforces are a very useful capability however it should not be a crutch to be relied upon. Especially by the Royal Navy.

What do you expect when so much funding is being differed to nonsense in the UK and most of Europe. You can’t even be bothered to protect your own shores from invaders, you put up migrants in hotels and give them money, you give public money to diversity and inclusion programs including in your own police. The Royal Navy is not going to be taken seriously by your public until it is required to defend you from something. The entire world has been lulled into a false sense of security where defense is neglected both because of a lack of conflict but because of political pressure to be ok with the bad behavior of foreign nations. Except Russia for some reason probably because Putin is clearly not a leftist. Until a serious conservative movement rules your chambers defense will always be underfunded, the left goes to war more often and they also cut funding for the military more often. It’s all about optics and connivence. The same exact things are happening in the United States except it may be more dire as our entire economy hinges on our defense of trade and we continually differ all our military operations to the tip of the spear ie special operations. We are more and more neglecting the performance of the regular Military for what amounts to two or three hundred men country wide. One bad night could cripple our ability to pressure any rogue movement militarily. Meanwhile our military regulars are having training to get over the problems with obesity. Every time we go a protracted period without a serious conflict our military tactics become overwhelmed with theories based on untested technology as was the case in Vietnam with the Air Force. We had absolute perfect doctrine for dog fighting and we called it obsolete because of missile development and then got destroyed by a bunch of subsonic last gen migs.
I wager we are doing the same thing with the misunderstanding of the fundamental value of units, specifically boots on the ground but also vessels in the navy. It’s entirely possible that the carrier group is already obsolete due to superior missile and torpedo technology.

I don't actually think the US and its allies would do themselves a massive favour attacking Houthi targets in Yemen, be it by airstrikes, Tomahawks or even with boots on the ground even if they had the possibility right now.
First of all the Houthi response would likely be a massive retaliation attack at commercial ships and especially against allied warships and against US and allied facilities in the Region, be it airbases and dronebases in Saudi Arabia or Djibuti or be it commercial sites like oilfeelds and industrial plants in the region. With several dozens of drones and ballistic missiles flying on a single Burk even Aegis could get overwhelmed. The airdefence sites at those locations on land in the middle east are already really stressed by giving Patriots to Ukraine and the added pressure in eastern europa. Especially the people in Djibuti would probably don't like watching as missiles (with a relatively bad CEP) drop at some bases there for long and could pressure the US to leave the base.
Secondly the Houthis have the possibility to mine Bab Al-Mandab and parts of the red sea which could really lead to a prolonged halt of all shipping there (and demining takes ages as you see in the persian gulf).
Third, with such a strike the US might put additional pressure on their relationship with Saudi Arabia, who are right now trying to exit the Conflict with the Houthies in Yemen (there is actually a ceasefire since early 2022 that is more or less holding since) and the Saudis are also in talks with Iran for the first time in decades, which are partly mediated by China.
Dealing with such an asymmetric threat is much more complicated than dropping a couple of Tomahawks on it.
But pressure inside the US to take action against the Houthis might get unavoidable if US or allied troops actually get injured or even killed at some point from a drone or missile attack and such an attack could likely be provoked or even intended at some point by the Houthis to trigger exactly this response.
Finally action taken against the Houthis might lead to attacks by other Iranian proxies in the region, especially by Hezbollah or groups in Syria and Iraq...

Australia seems to also be having issues getting our Hunters going as well. I think the main reason we struggle to build is probably that we have lost a lot of manufacturing and engineering capability with the likes of Holden, Ford and Toyota pulling out. There is still plenty of world leading manufacturing going on in Australia in many areas including Automotive (Racing)
It has just moved into small volume, high quality somewhat niche areas
Quite a few of the engineers, specialists and designers from Holden, Ford, Mitsubishi etc moved into smaller engineering startups.
Plenty of articles online featuring ex automotive manufacturing employees and their successful businesses shipping high quality relatively low volume goods worldwide
We many have lost a lot of "mass production" but I don't believe we are planning on building 20,000 frigates and 10,000 subs.
In fact I'd argue that high quality, low volume manufacturing is something Australia has a lot of experience with and is quite good at relatively speaking

To this day, the C ONE THIRTY is still the largest plane to have ever landed on an aircraft carrier. The first U-2 carrier landing occurred on March 2, 1964, aboard the USS Ranger.

Wait what? A behemoth like C-130, on a carrier?
And how do you land a U-2!? They're already tricky to land on a regular runway. How did they manage to fit that wingspan, and what about the chase car?
      I mean.. What?

Anyone found an in depth discussion of why there's minimal response to the shipping attacks? I mean beyond the obvious. If you know of a deep dive geopolitcal analysis, let me know. Thanks.

I would like to get a discussion going about re acquiring the Philadelphia NSY as I have recently heard of it's potential sale to a Korean Company. This makes zero sense as the United States desperately needs shipyard capability. The ignorance and semi suicidal deconstruction of military facilities in the 90s / 2000s needs to be reversed yesterday.

What I hear is the French Navy had their fill of Prosperity Guardian already... they are running their own convoys for European shipping. This is crazy. You have two carrier groups there and they cannot secure the area. The French are laughing as are all the terrorists, though there are separate laughing operations at least.

We need about 16-32 billion I believe you said in upgrade funding over like a decade just to catch up. I hope all of that if fulfilled but I want the ship yard that created the LCS in Wisconsin every senior staff member fired and senator Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson removed from office before a single dollar is given out.

The main reason for this is to keep the payments cheap, they employ a small workforce and drag it out instead of a full workforce. It's more expensive in the long run but too.
