Q: Can submarine-launch Tomahawks carry a nuclear warhead?
If so, this would amplify the US nuclear deterrent beyond current Ohio class boomers.
I wish I could ask a few questions about some basic equipment inside U.S. subs ....I'm building one out of Lego with full interior. Minifig scale. approx 14" inch beam x 15' feet long.

I was a Reactor Operator on a Virginia Class before I got out, and I can confirm it is a beautiful engine room and boy is it quiet!

it is unfortunate that most of us will never get to have the experience of seeing it. None of these vessels will ever become a museum ship.
I'm a bona fide civilian land lubber and the idea of an engine room powering such a huge vessel being "silent" just bogles my mind.
God Bess America! ... we will always have the best subs in the world!... also as an ex-RO from the 70’s -80’s on the USS Batfish SSN-681...we were light years ahead of the Soviets!... the things we did!. Would love to go on a new sub! Thanks for serving the in the silent service! We are a rear bunch! Lol

Aaron, I've been watching Sub Brief for a hot minute and I've never seen you get as excited about ANYTHING like you were when talking about the Virginias. Like a little school boy. LOL.
I was also on a 688 class submarine as the reactor operator. My son is currently a JO on a submarine. The LA Class was very quiet, especially with some additions in the early 1980s. All I would say is that we should increase the production to three per year for the next ten years… Just as a note, while we have ordered 35+ VA Class, we only have a little over 20 active.

8 subs at $350b over the next few decades is a major rip-off, when USN can build one for $5.5b.
This is not a defense pact, this is USA milking Australia, that's all.

Claimed and you know the Chinese follows the Russian in over stating their weapon capabilities. I would be surprised if the 093B can even achieve the sound level of the Russain Sierra I.
Yea maybe the day it leaves the shipyard but after some times goes by…
One thing I noticed on the Chinese boats is that their bow section is being shared by both the torpedo tubes and the sonar dome. Doesn't this make their sonar capability less than the American boats where their torpedo tubes are set a bit further back so the entire bow is saved for the sonar?
Chinese boats use a cylindrical array/hull array. The US uses spherical arrays primarily(some Virginia's were built with hull arrays). The more important sonar sensor is the towed array.
That's at least how it used to be.
With cutting-edge sonars (as i understand it),
you're no longer constrained by specific array shapes.
Essentially, as long as your Computer knows where a sensor is and in what direction it's pointing,
it can combine it with the data from its brothers to form a picture.
Thus you can "just" plaster the inside of your bow with them.
However, you still can't have a sensor and a torpedotube in the same place,
so some loss of potential is probably unavoidable if you divide that prime real-estate.
I'm a layman though, so ...

Thats a crazy horsepower stat for the Virginia class. I didn’t realize it was that high. I really enjoyed your vague yet awe inspiring description of the engine room on a Virginia.
That's more than the Iowa class BBs. And New Jersey did 35.2 knots when she was fitting out for her 1968 refit. Makes ya wonder...
Great episode. Brings back memories of 9 fast attacks simultaneously under construction at Newport News back in the mid-eighties, with three carriers being built outside. Personally, I think capability only matters for boats underway. Like the F-35 and F-22, if you're down for maintenance most of the time, you're not an asset.

As an Australian, I believe that the RAN needs a limited number of torpedo launched ASM Tomahawks back in the inventory for the Collins class Submarines again.
But I believe that those new design ASM's are due to be delivered to the RAAF 1st, before the RAN.
Heard some more chatter on the supposed 093 accident. Two sailors supposedly survived the mishap. So, I guess they did lose one.

If it happened, you would see pictures by now, when Russian and American submarines had accident of this magnitude, you saw pictures.

The engine room is like standing in one of those padded "quiet rooms" and running a small electric fan. Insanely quiet. Take the smooth ride of the lexus ls from that ad with the stacked champagne glasses and double it. Extremely smooth, extremely quiet.

I used to ride both LA and Virginia class subs, the difference in engine rooms and their layouts is night and day. Can confirm that Virginias are next level comparatively, but I can’t say that I had a religious experience with it like you 😂

Yes! ...Well, once Aukus gets up and running with a shipyard in Australia, I think they, with the US, the ROK and Japan, will be in pretty good shape as long as we keep our technological edge. I WOULD like to see a SOSUS network along the first island chain and in the South China sea, too, but that'd be pretty provocative, I suppose.
9:35 actually, the Poms wrote the book on sound silencing, or at least the first chapters in it. Some would go as far as to say that it was Britain’s payback for US charity in the 1958 UK-US Mutual Defence Agreement.

I was of the belief that the Royal Navy wrote the same book on quieting,
first displayed in the Swiftsure class of the 1970s?
Then perfected in the Trafalgar Class of the 80s-90s.
The 688s arrived about the same time as the swiftsures I believe, and both had similar noise levels.
Tom Clancy was huge fan of the Royal Naval Submarine service.
Is the nsm missle the replacement for the harpoon? Is it a much better missle? Im not up to date on naval weapons. Thank in advance!
Target is 2 sub's per year and both shipyards are waiting on the funding for the Block VI. Currently, due to a bunch of reasons, only launching about 1.3 subs per year. And....when the AUKUS deal goes through, the output will have to increase to 2.3 subs per year. I always enjoy your shows.
7:00 - As mentioned in the video, there aren't any more 093Bs being built at the moment. If I had to speculate, the likely outcome is that the PLAN will use the lessons & improvements learned from the 093B & apply it to the type 095 SSN (the long awaited follow on to the Type 093 series).
As China is aware that its military technology is lagging behind that of the U.S., the country builds limited numbers which enable them to see flaws and identify needs for the improvement.
I'm a surface Navy guy but without a doubt the next big naval battle is going to be determined by the subsurface fleet.

I’m a welder for Huntington ingalls. Some of them engineers make our job difficult. I can say them engineers are masterminds when you see how we build it upside down.
PROUD to see the Navy putting ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Arizona’ back on the USN rolls for the first time since the December 7, 1941 Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor that sank both USS OKLAHOMA:BB-37 and USS ARIZONA:BB-39. The first two Block V Virginia Class boats will be:
SSN-802: ‘USS OKLAHOMA’
SSN-803: ‘USS ARIZONA’
I couldn’t pick a better name for the new Block V’s; Honoring the Sailors and Crews of these two legendary US Battleships.

Aaron, Former adcap 688 Nuke here. How much different is the engineroom on the Virginia class from late 688s? Don't need details, but is it really that different?
I would think sea noise could be filtered out by using circuitry that only allows constant frequencies to be heard/processed.
I wired the MC panel on the 694 during my short employment at EB.
After Aaron's description of the Mk48 I am nervous just thinking about the damn thing.

the Bohai ship yard was moved starting about a year ago. The old yard has the one large assembly hall. The new facility has many. Estimated to be able to build far more than one nuclear sub at a time.

Hi. I’m Canadian. As a grad student in the early 90’s, I worked for a university think tank, a brain trust of the Canadian government, was awarded a low level security clearance, and tasked with seeing if the tech in the “Hunt for Red October” was publicly available, the question being, did Tom Clancy have access to classified info… stupid project, but learned much and work led to further job prospects. Point is, astonishing how far tech has come since then. Also, impressed by this analysis, sound reasoning and purposeful use of available facts. Becoming big fan of channel.
And did he have access to classified info? What were your results?
IIRC, Clancy was fascinated with the tabletop game Harpoon, which he credited with most of his research. Hunt for Red October was originally a scenario for Harpoon for wargaming conventions.
There are many anecdotes about naval personnel seeing Harpoon and freaking out.
His books featured a high-level information source codenamed Cardinal. The CIA got scared because they had a high-level information source codenamed Top Hat, and talked to him. After Top Hat died, Clancy told the story. Of course, it was just a coincidence.
@@OpenGL4ever I don’t know for sure, but pretty sure he didn’t. My task was to verify if the tech and tactics could be verified by publicly available documents. Just about everything was… a few things I couldn’t verify, (which could have indicated “yes”), but could also have been just reasonably inferred or made up. I wasn’t privy to higher up analytics. Like I said, pretty stupid project.

Several commenters asked what was better SSN 21 Class or Virginia Class. They are two different designs for two different purposes. SSN 21 is the ultimate blue water hunter/killer. It has eight Torpedo tubes and can load our 48 or 50 heavyweight torpedoes. Virginia is multi-mission. It has a nine man lock out trunk for special missions. It has two large diameter ocean interface tubes (redesigned Trident missile tubes) to support unmaned vehicles and special ops.
WoW , wait to the Dreadnought Class is in service from the UK, US and UK what a team.
There not SSN but SSBN
The Dreadnought is UK’s next SSBN and will only be in service in the Royal Navy.
Australia won’t operate SSBNs.

I have a question, Wikipedia says the Arleigh Burke, Flight 3 has no ship to ship missiles. I find that very hard to believe. Surely it has some anti-ship missiles in it's stack ready to go.
So, when I was on a US sub 20 plus years ago, that was already a 20 plus year old design, the Russians gave the Chinese the same type of sound deadening tech we on my boat.
I'm sure it is better than what they had before, but I'm positive it's not anything like the US has now.
