- The Department of Humanities and the Philosophy Program is proud to present a public lecture by Baynard Woods.
Baynard Woods resides in Baltimore, where he covered criminal injustices and protest for the Guardian and the Baltimore City Paper. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Oxford American magazine, and other publications. A respected investigative journalist and writer, his most recent work with Brandon Soderberg I Got a Monster: The Rise and Fall of America's Most Corrupt Police Squad directs an intense and focused light on the criminal plots and veniality of the notorious Gun Trace Task Force, whose corruption exploded before the public in 2017. Woods and Soderberg delve into the genesis of this tragedy in policing, its consequences still reverberating today both on Baltimore's streets and within the halls that carve out the city's institutions of power.
Most intriguingly, Baynard Woods also holds a Doctorate in ancient philosophy and will discuss how his decision to pursue a career in journalism is a way to lead a truly "Socratic life." How we might understand this goal as the shared goal bringing together journalism and philosophy will be a primary focus of this event.
