Wow I cried when Christopher was hugging his grandmother and finally smiled and said "this is her! This is my grandmother" in a rare moment of insight after the intense paranoia. A rare glimpse of his true self instead of his illness. Incredible documentary, SO well edited - especially with the moments of honesty from the nephew asking if the policeman deserves another chance... made my jaw drop too... truly one of the best documentaries I've seen showing what is and isn't being done about mental illness/policing in the US and the personal fallout from the families outward to the wider community.

Agreed. Men should not be held to this "I'm not supposed to cry, I'm a man" narrative. Men have emotions just like women do, and to expect them to never show emotion is asking for trouble. I’m only allowed to smile and be okay even though it’s not real. I encourage everyone to show and express whatever emotions they have and to wear their emotions on their sleeves. Agreed - even a follow up to see how implementing more and more of the mental health training is being deploying across the US police stations and following along cases like this to humanise the people with the illnesses, both during and acute episode and day to day so police can see its not just about threats and non threats . You can see how incredibly sad and contradictory something like bipolar and schizophrenia can be when families need medical info to help and the persons paranoia eont allow them to divulge or give cosign rights to family members- and why with medicine costs of $2k+ a mth people turn to street drugs. I thought this showed so many different sides to allow us to empathise very well but would love to see more!
And I wish they would focus more on brain health which dr Amen Danial was talking about not all these mental illnesses my mental health has gotten worse because he talks about all the things I need to stop doing like eating unhealthy and staying away from weed and alcohol it’s not necessarily these mental illnesses it’s getting our brain balanced. 😢 Dr keep focusing on the wrong thing we are all NORMAL not these crazy demonic people. You shouldnt have to hide it from you parents, and spreading awareness is key. Plus it's good to let your friends know about your mental health, so you can vent to them when needed. And one of your friends might have the same issues and needs someone to talk to about it as well. the amount of pain that family is going through after losing those 2 little kids and then their father, is unimaginable. not only were his kids murdered, they were murdered by the love of his life. he lost everything in the blink of an eye. there needs to be this type of mental health unit EVERYWHERE

@@thepolitea1545 I try to do as much personal outreach as possible. Not really in the financial position personally to start something like that up nor do I know the exact ins and outs of it, but it's definitely something I would like to do in the future. I've pitched ideas of similar programs to my Chief to no avail. I would love to have an outreach program for kids in the area served by my department but it's hard when you have no support from the necessary channels.

As somebody who struggles with mental illness in San Antonio, I’ve never had fear of the police hurting me when they get called on me while I’m having a meltdown. They’ve always been helpful and compassionate and it helps SO much.

I heard the police say "just relax"so many times, I felt my anxiety rise just hearing those words. If a person has a mental health problem, you constantly telling them to do something they are incapable of doing, can make them get more frustrasted and makes things worse.
DatingMatis156 generally, yes. Being supportive while also maintaining an emotional distance is what’s best. Telling us or even suggesting this to us while in a state can make us more agitated. It all depends on the situation however. Sometimes, we do need force. If we are a danger to ourselves and/or others and there is no reasoning(it happens. A lot. Myself for example)the last resort is to restrain, confine and seek medical help immediately. There is no right way to deal with any of this. Only helpful tips and advice that can work 50/50. Mental illness isn’t predictable nor is it all that understood really. One person with a mental illness, and another with same will not react the same to way to the same actions. We’re all individuals. Mental illness or not. What my therapist told me, and has really helped me a lot was this: “expect the worst but hope for the best. That way, you are rarely disappointed in life.” Good luck!

There should be however you can't expect law enforcement to be the ones that treat mental health. Family members call the police because 1.) They are an immediate threat to themselves or the family member. 2.) Because there is no one else to call that would put themselves in a hostile situation, not willing to defend themselves from a threat and throw down their life to save the person that's threatening others. In this video you saw police from the mental health team that had to go hands on. Clearly, nothing that they did or said changed that. If that individual had a gun or a knife that situation would have gone differently. Mental illness has been a problem since the beginning of mankind. It used to be that mentally ill people were kept in institutions. Civil rights activists fought to have them released into the community. The real truth is that maybe these people can't be fixed. Maybe we can give them medication to the point they are vegetables in extreme circumstances but we also complain about over medicating. It's sad to think about but can we really fix some mental illness? Also, why do we constantly put this burden on police? This is a problem that even mental health officials can't solve yet we expect police to. We all need to be honest on what can be done.

I know someone who adopted a little girl who had been trafficked. The girl was Deaf, had attachment disorder, and severe psychotic episodes where she thought she was fighting off her former abusers. 😭 The girl was tiny, but it took four grown men to subdue her. Whenever the mom had to call for help she always had to ask for specific officers by name. Because the girl was Deaf, if she tried to sign, the police might think she was reaching for a weapon.
Dang the heart on that little boy was incredible. As someone with multiple MI I feel for them all. My biggest fear is delusions and hallucinations. I can’t imagine how tiring it has to be for their loved ones when they refuse care. Even when I’m doing everything right I can be a handful for my husband. God Bless us all

@@amber_Forever16 there are literally PSAs about it... when you're underwater people on the surface cannot hear you and splashing may happen but only at first and minimal, but splashing at s pool isnt exactly a red flag, and then there's nothing. There are stories of children drowning when their mom was 3ft away.... and are you a life guard or something? Why have you seen "many" people on the verge of drowning? I do understand the metaphor in the original comment, I just don't think it was very clever.
I like the analogy. I would actually go one step further to say imagine you can’t see them, and they can’t scream for help. When you’re feeling so overwhelmed, depressed and anxious, it’s so hard to ask for help because words don’t seem to adequately express how you feel.

My husband was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar. That's an illness that can be treated with no pills no hospital, the treating medication will not cure anything it will make the patients feel like vegetables. My husband was healed completely. Jesus is the only way people can get true healing physical and emotional. People with mental illness are going through spiritual torture. My husband was going through mental illness from childhood and only after he accepted jesus christ as his saviour at 24 years of age he was healed and delivered. We have been married for 6 years now and have a beautiful son that's 4 years old.
Hi I'm Christopher Remmey, they never put all of what happened. Me and my mom were doing meth and she would call the cops because I wouldn't sleep. She would hit me and now I'm in San Antonio State Hospital and she is cashing and using my SSI check for her bills. My house burned down in 2018 . The breakdown and begging to not go….gets me every time. 2 years clean off psyche wards. I NEVER want to go through that again but it did save my life. More than once.

But dismissing those delusions and feelings, making him feel more isolated and misunderstood, will only further exacerbate his delusions and his mistrust. Potentially making the situation worse for his family.
@@isabelc6581 She should check for a local chapter of NAMI / familya they offer mental health support and crisis lines to loved ones. I won't be so hard on the mom, she's older. Not everyone is a psychology major. The more the mother can be educated about mental illness the better. It's obvious she's also caring for her elderly mother and has her hands full. I feel for that family.

I don't even have a mental illness and my doctor kind of disregarded my ADD and made it seem like I didn't need the diagnosis of dyslexia because "people walk through my office every day and I'm sure they have some kind of diagnosis like that, but they still made though life. Kids today are distracted by phones.. gum.. all that. During my time the teacher was able to take the unfocused kid into a room and make them do the work" If that doesn't say enough on how bad doctors treat patients that can be somewhat more "clear" to understand, I am scared for those who suffer from something without clear understanding. We need more training for doctors, OTHER than the physical
I agree. But I absolutely can't tolerate people in the criminal justice system not understanding mental illness. The lowest point in my 22 years was sitting in front of a judge, in truancy court, who denied anxiety being an actual mental illness. He would sit there and repeatedly tell me that anxiety wasn't keeping me home from school, I was essentially just a bad kid that refused to go to school. I heard countless times how he 'has anxiety some times but it always goes away' as if this fuckin' dude's nerves before sending someone to jail, was comparable to a clinically diagnosed anxiety disorder. Imagine being told at least once every month that you're mental illness is invalid. I got put on house arrest for almost the entirety of a summer break because of something I was born with and will have to deal with to some extent for the rest of my life.
I never helped me. I was institutionalized about a year ago, and all that did was make me more suicidal and anxious (I have depression and anxiety issues and was sent to the hospital because I had tried to hang myself off of a door knob).
I have been in situations like this. Thankfully I was able to isolate my self when it becomes a psychosis episode. I’m just so tired of having to explain my self to people. I’m not crazy, talking to my self helps me process and sort my thoughts. Attention and memory stuff is f u n. Main point: we all have a lot of love to share with others. Just show some kindness and love to someone who’s in a bad place.

I gotta say that I’m really impressed with the sister who’s brother was shot by a cop. She hasn’t taught her son to hate cops because of what happened and that in my opinion shows integrity. I am just really impressed by her. Thank you for teaching him correctly.

The average person doesn’t understand mental illness. So give family members some slack, they are trying to survive the mentally ill person too with no training and very little help or support and it’s all about money or lack of it.
Danny's little nephew is such a special, kind soul. My heart breaks for their pain. When his mother told him he will be treated differently because of the colour of his skin, his beautiful little innocent face had me breaking down. What a cruel world we live in where some children have to be taught this just to survive. Utterly heart breaking. I hope they thrive and heal.

I've dealt with a schizophrenia family member, it was terrifying, he refused to take his meds, and was abusive to my mother and my brothers. I ended up moving in at 17 with them, and stuff up to him, protected my brothers, and my mother, he lays hands on one of my brothers, and I went chest to chest with him, he realized I didn't have the fear my mother and brother had of him, he had conditioned them. My mother called me one time, told me the relationship was over and she feared for her life, I did what I felt was right, but I knew was illegal... I say at her house with her, with my handgun 'laying in wait' with 'malice and aforethought' I was ready to spend the rest of my life in prison for my mother. He refused to take his meds because he said he felt like 'a zombie'... He was always anxious, and mentally and physically abusive towards my blood, and I went there to stop it. Now she's divorced him.
It’s happened to me. Twice. Believe it or not....it’s help. They cannot leave you like that. At that point they are responsible for whatever you may do. You get medicated and therapy for a few days. I am lucky. After two times....I had a good therapist who helped me deal with Bi polar. My meds don’t cure it. I have to apply coping skills. I choose to do that. AND.....if I feel myself losing control.....I let someone know immediately. This past summer I felt a change coming on. I called Behavioral Health right here in city where I live and admitted MYSELF. But there are SO many who cannot get the message....understand help.....etc. It’s a lifelong illness. Finally at 62 years old..... I am living a happy life....want to keep it that way....and will do what I have to to accomplish that. Sometimes it IS choice. If you think I had it easy......I couldn’t begin to tell you what I’ve been through. Enough that therapist and Psychs can’t believe I survived it.
these mental hospitals are really bad, I've been to one after trying to kill myself they force you into locked rooms, medicate you a lot, recreational activities are limited it's like a prison but more violence because people act out more often due to all the mentally unstable patients, it actually makes you feel worse, but in the end you're a danger to a society so there's no other option
It can be heartbreaking but, you have to ensure the safety of the person and others. These sitations can be deadly in many ways. Also, it is to help and I'm sure it sucks. I know...I do this everyday and have been in many situations with decomposed persons that may have caused myself to not go home.

Think a lot of this began as drug abuse and possibly very abusive and neglectful parenting. Some of these people because of drugs don't sleep for days and that also messes with their mind.

Having worked with dog’s & been a rescuer etc., a bad dog is a scared dog! Bad people are literally everywhere but dog’s can be man’s best friend.............they are mine!
They’re really smart, they have seizure warning dogs so it wouldn’t surprise me if they can sense the physiological symptoms of tension. (High heart rate, blood pressure, anger, ect..)

Most often the hospitals don't help. They don't want to go back to the behavioral health unit because they suck! I work in this system, and it's broken.
Mental illness is so hard to understand, even psychiatrists still struggle with it to this day. You can't see it, smell it, touch it, it's not like having say a broken leg. I have Bipolar and one of the hardest things I have to do is to try and explain what "I feel like" or "What are you feeling". You cannot explain to people who don't suffer mental illness bcos they are never truly going to understand.
i remember being in the psych ward, a woman in our unit had suddenly become mute and would not speak. on the phone with the woman’s mother, she told her that psychology is an unfinished study. which broke my heart and made me slink back into my bed and cry. i have bipolar and ptsd as well.
It's a very lonely place to be, when no one around you, understands you. All humans crave connection. When we don't have that, it only makes it that much harder and emotionally painful! I'm here if ANYONE wants to talk 😊

My mother has paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar, and was beaten by the police and almost killed. She was charged with resisting arrest, which is so disgusting because of course someone with schizophrenia is going to resist arrest. The statistics don't lie, thank you for what you do to help!
I've been clinicaly depressed for the past 10 years and man that shit hit home. I can't speak for everybody but personally ever since this illness has taken a grip I don't feel a part of society anymore. I've been lucky enough to find people that were going through a number of things as well and we kind of formed our own society if you will, which is how we manage to function on a daily basis. Still, we had to create our own support system, society as a whole is just not willing or educated enough to recognize the fact that most of us are still normal, emotional human beings, just with a deteriorated mindset. The tradegy is that most people I know can be brought back on track with the right help and medication. The Stigma of being open about mental illness and seeking help is still incredibly high though. Still, thanks to the producers of this documentary, it's rare that you see an unbiased, all around view on such a complex and ambigious problem. Also thanks to each and every individual reaching out to a person that they think is in distress, all of you might have saved lifes without even realizing it.

defunding means rerouting funds to be better spent elsewhere. for example less money on firearms, use that money so that all cops have min 80 hours mental health/de-escalation training.
Better training is not enough. Defunding the police puts the funds where therapy can be provided so these type of crisis don't even escalate to the point police needs to be called. There are people running around with mental illness that is not treated because they have nowhere to receive proper treatment or lack the funds. Prisons are the number one mental health providers right now. It is insane. That's not where mental illness should be treated.
@@shootfilmnotguns2023 We used to do this in the past, they were called mental asylums where the mentally ill were "treated". These institutions, even the best of them, were deemed inhumane. This video proves the police were trying to make real strides in improving the interactions with the mentally ill. The last thing we need to do is defund the police. Restructuring is the answer. @@willh7690 We do not live in the 18th century anymore. I work in mental health, so I know what I am talking about. Does the system need improvement? Sure! And that's why funding is so important! If you saw the whole video you must be aware that in the US funding had been cut to the point where many patients have nowhere to go or no services they can afford. As long as getting a gun is cheaper than getting good long term therapy we have a huge problem. Just look at some other countries and how they successfully deal with funding their police department versus social and human service institutions.

About to be even more broken once she's taken during an already stressful situation, held against her will, drugged against her will, turned against most of the people in her life because she's been branded by the system, and possibly even abused behind closed doors, which happened to me ar both the psych wards I was placed in.

I went into a psych hold as I was seeking treatment for detox and couldn't stay off drugs so I knew they wouldn't let me out and if have no way of getting my drug of choice in there. But seeing how others were treated in crisis was truly eye opening and scared me shitless. They don't deal with the problem, they drug them to sleep and then let them on their way. It's so sad. And it's got to be terrifying. So I really couldn't agree with you more. Hopefully better methods and more understanding will be found in the years to come
The official was correct they need more than only 40 hrs of training but i congratulate them on requiring the 40hr training. It should be required nationwide.
That was a truly touching documentary. My heart goes out to all of those suffering from mental health and the families involved. Even more so to the amazing mother and strong woman that was Marketta. I had to google the outcome of the case and it truly saddened me that officer Brewer was disgustingly found not guilty and was even reinstated back as an officer and allowed to continue working on the force. That truly saddened and shocked me. As for Chris I am just glad it was only assault and that he didn't fatally hurt one of his family members as I truly feel if he keeps on being let down by the system and with his condition clearly deteriorating it's only a matter of time. My heart goes out to them all.

thats a real fear . i think being a mom of someone with a mental illness you stop fearing for your own life and fear for your child being hurt or in the wrong place at the wrong time. and for people around your child that can possibly be hurt by your child .my son has a mental illness and since kindergarten i feared for the other children .90% of the time my son is fine and a happy child its the other 10% of the time i fear he can snap and hurt someone . i couldn't live happily if i knew my child hurt someone else . even if he cant help it . or cant control himself . being a mom with a child of mental illness we go through alot .but god gives special babies to special moms . thats what i truly believe. no one else will love them like their moms .
I'm a Peer Recovery Specialist for alcoholism addiction and mental health disorders. I too suffered from addiction issues and had mental health problems and through the support of a few beautiful people who also knew the way it felt bad went through treatment and therapy and they saved me! I'm giving back by simply understanding and caring unconditionally for others. Look in the beginning I blamed everything else and then I got sober and started to take all the blame and internalize it all and through years of educating myself and forgiveness of everything I learned it's no ones fault....its life and we all play parts in it. We get much better at it through experience and finding hope and having faith. I'm so very Blessed to understand and I have faith that all the pain is only temporary. I have seen the most beautiful things made from broken pieces. We tell our stories and touch others with them in ways that last. Bless anyone who needs it tonight lord, and use me to help your children lord I want to help, and give love and teach of forgiveness. In your name Amen.

I totally feel what Martha feels. My youngest has schizophrenia and bipolar. Thankfully I only ever had to cal 911 on him once and he was cooperative. He's been to the hospital several times but admitted only once to be stabilized. When the officer told Martha that he was going to be kept in the hospital, I said out loud no they won't. They never do. My child prefers to live on the street and moving around alot. I have been able to keep some track of him because he he gets arrested on a regular basis. I just know someday I will get the worst news any parent can get. I truly appreciate that these units exist but the broken healthcare system completely negates the good the units do.
First off I hope the police that helped these people see this. THANK YOU. We need more like you. I've had so many bad situations with police officers. I've met some great ones too. The last 2 guys I've had a relationship with have killed themselves. The last one I was with threat to kill himself several times and I always called police or emergency responce. The last time they came we couldn't find him. I finally found him after a few hours of driving around looking for him. One of the emergency response guys told me that I was wasting man hour and he was tired of coming out. The last time he threatened to kill himself I didn't call anybody. The emergency response guy that said he was sick of me calling them.. came to my door to let me know he killed himself. I have flashbacks when I have to deal with a male officer because of what another cop did to me over 20yrs ago. I also have dealt with mental health issues all my life since I was 7yrs old. People seem to think people with mental health issues are crazy and out of there mind. People with mental health issues have different degrees of issues. I've been in therapy and have taken my medication since I was 15. I've never gone off my meds. I actually have been very fortunate. I had my dream job for almost 5yrs. I worked at the crisis center and kind of like a halfway house were I ran groups and helped people with mental health issues and I loved it. Some people just are not cut out to do anything with mental health issues. Some get burned out. I just want to let you guys know that I am thankful for this documentary and for the officers that get it and are trying to make a difference. Thank you for trying to understand and treating people with kindness and empathy when they need it the most. We need this program in every city.

I live with someone who has BPD (Form of Bipolar) and its so difficult, we're not taught to deal with that I cant imagine living with someone with full Bipolar and Schizophrenia must be so heartbreaking and sad. Its so easy to blame parents/relatives when really it is that person doing it, its not their actual selves but its THEM, Cant speak for everyone but what can you do as relatives.

I hate that people blame parents all the time, yes of course sometimes its the parents fault but a lot of the time it isn't. Mental Health definitely can be parents fault because depression/anxiety are things that can come on, mental illness is something either a trigger/genes, so theres not really much you can do. You spend so much time trying to help them but really theres nothing you can do, it has to come from them. Its their battle in their own head, you can only do so much in terms of making them comfortable. For us its so hard because you have to walk on eggshells a little bit around those kinds of people, doing it in your own safe space (home) is really tiring. (BTW Im not the parent Im a sibling so its not a biased opinion)

De-escalation training is a major part of our training. But the way we are trained to de-escalate training should be tweaked. Most of it is legit though. Atleast in my department.
I’ve had some interactions with CIT officers. They honestly the best. I recently have had suicidal ideations and overdosed twice. They had to talk me into going to the hospital. Please to those who are going through a hard time reach out to your support team or call a local crisis hotline. I know it’s easier said then done. Still struggling myself but slowly working with the help from others how to manage my depression and anxiety.
These guys are really making a difference, the powers that be would be wise to give them the tools they need (including educational components for new officers).... thanks for making their innovative work known, I hope many more police forces use it as a model.

Poor woman probably had postpartum depression like my mom when she had my sister... I’m glad nothing bad happened to me or my sister but my mom having to hide her mental illness to stay strong and watch over us isn’t healthy and refusing medication. In the Latino community (pretty much any color of race) it’s strictly taboo to talk about mental illness. Hopefully every woman with a newborn makes sure that they get help..

Love their training. It's fantastic way to deal with psychotic breaks and how to perfect the way they treat them. Sometimes it's suicide by cop, so hoping this helps that situation. Kudos to the team. Need this in every country.

T DRIT what I think the point of the reply is that really forgiveness is something that can help the person let go of all the anger and pain and hatred but it is not meant to be something people should EVER feel obligated to do. what happened cannot be undone and because of the actions of the police a loving family member was taken from them. It is wrong to just forgive them because it will happen again and it IS HAPPENING right now to someone. The only lessons that can be learned are on the side of law enforcement and the procedural handlings of situations like these. Sadly changes are not made in way that reduces these things from happening. Nobody HAS to forgive and from what I saw the police never apologized or admitted to wrong doing. It is not justice when nothing is done to stop this from happening. Dena Barton the sad thing is medication doesn't solve the problem. It only suppresses and makes it worse overtime while turning them into zombies. They tried giving my brother a cocktail of antipsychotics when he was just 13 for ADHD and the medication made him start hearing voices yet his "hyperactivity" was only being suppressed because it turned him into a walking zombie that looked like a heroin junkie. I had him stop taking them and the side effects subsided. I'd argue that having ADHD is much better than having Schizophrenia. I urge you to educate yourself further on these matters before speaking on them, please.
I know what chris's parents are going through. My baby brother is schizophrenic and he won't get help and he's always burning holes in stuff and he says he has a friend named blue. He screams and yells talking to himself and he thinks the government is always watching him through his windows. Its hard to watch my brother go through this. When he was younger he was normal then 1 day something snapped in his brain causing him to be like this.
All of our officers need this training nationwide! Not just for the offenders protection but for also our officers!! I have researched for years mental health in regards to someone close to me who is bi polar. I finally got him to take his meds but its a different day daily. I hope Chris finally got the help he so desperately needs. I pray every state can really see how important the knowledge of understanding mental health is. Great documentary 🏅
I have mental illnesses as well, and there is always that possibility- but it’s about trying to stay positive, using your coping tools for whatever situation you’re in, taking it day by day, taking your meds ( if there are any you’re taking) the correct way, and if you’re not in therapy it’s such a good tool even if you’re feeling fine to have as extra backup for your heart and mind. You got this. I know you do. Hang in there and stay positive! ♥️

She’s doing what she needs to do. She can’t protect him for the rest of his life. So she has to try and groom him about the reality of being a black man before it slaps him across the face. I have also suffered from Mental illness for 21 years now. From June 2017- March 2019, I had serious Mental Health issues and I was very sick. I was struggling with suicidal ideation and chronic headaches and I was very depressed. This was the worst time in life. I was unable to work for two years because of my severe Mental illness. Now I have an excellent psychiatrist that I see frequently and I am on a anti-depressant to manage my headaches. I have also struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation due to personal family issues in the past. I do believe that Police Officers in my opinion in Ontario, Canada are excellent and they want to help people suffering from mental illness to get better by seeing a psychiatrist. I am much better now since I am seeing an excellent psychiatrist in Ontario, Canada and I am on the correct psychiatric medication. Incredible documentary, SO well edited - especially with the moments of honesty from the nephew asking if the policeman deserves another chance... made my jaw drop too... truly one of the best documentaries I've seen showing what is and isn't being done about mental illness/policing in the US and the personal fallout from the families outward to the wider community.

Agreed - even a follow up to see how implementing more and more of the mental health training is being deploying across the US police stations and following along cases like this to humanise the people with the illnesses, both during and acute episode and day to day so police can see its not just about threats and non threats . You can see how incredibly sad and contradictory something like bipolar and schizophrenia can be when families need medical info to help and the persons paranoia eont allow them to divulge or give cosign rights to family members- and why with medicine costs of $2k+ a mth people turn to street drugs. I thought this showed so many different sides to allow us to empathise very well but would love to see more!

Not really in the financial position personally to start something like that up nor do I know the exact ins and outs of it, but it's definitely something I would like to do in the future. I've pitched ideas of similar programs to my Chief to no avail. I would love to have an outreach program for kids in the area served by my department but it's hard when you have no support from the necessary channels.

As somebody who struggles with mental illness in San Antonio, I’ve never had fear of the police hurting me when they get called on me while I’m having a meltdown. They’ve always been helpful and compassionate and it helps SO much.

I heard the police say "just relax"so many times, I felt my anxiety rise just hearing those words. If a person has a mental health problem, you constantly telling them to do something they are incapable of doing, can make them get more frustrasted and makes things worse.

DatingMatis156 generally, yes. Being supportive while also maintaining an emotional distance is what’s best. Telling us or even suggesting this to us while in a state can make us more agitated. It all depends on the situation however. Sometimes, we do need force. If we are a danger to ourselves and/or others and there is no reasoning(it happens. A lot. Myself for example)the last resort is to restrain, confine and seek medical help immediately. There is no right way to deal with any of this. Only helpful tips and advice that can work 50/50. Mental illness isn’t predictable nor is it all that understood really. One person with a mental illness, and another with same will not react the same to way to the same actions. We’re all individuals. Mental illness or not. What my therapist told me, and has really helped me a lot was this: “expect the worst but hope for the best. That way, you are rarely disappointed in life.” Good luck!

There should be however you can't expect law enforcement to be the ones that treat mental health. Family members call the police because 1.) They are an immediate threat to themselves or the family member. 2.) Because there is no one else to call that would put themselves in a hostile situation, not willing to defend themselves from a threat and throw down their life to save the person that's threatening others. In this video you saw police from the mental health team that had to go hands on. Clearly, nothing that they did or said changed that. If that individual had a gun or a knife that situation would have gone differently. Mental illness has been a problem since the beginning of mankind. It used to be that mentally ill people were kept in institutions. Civil rights activists fought to have them released into the community. The real truth is that maybe these people can't be fixed. Maybe we can give them medication to the point they are vegetables in extreme circumstances but we also complain about over medicating. It's sad to think about but can we really fix some mental illness? Also, why do we constantly put this burden on police? This is a problem that even mental health officials can't solve yet we expect police to. We all need to be honest on what can be done.

I know someone who adopted a little girl who had been trafficked. The girl was Deaf, had attachment disorder, and severe psychotic episodes where she thought she was fighting off her former abusers. 😭 The girl was tiny, but it took four grown men to subdue her. Whenever the mom had to call for help she always had to ask for specific officers by name. Because the girl was Deaf, if she tried to sign, the police might think she was reaching for a weapon.
Dang the heart on that little boy was incredible. As someone with multiple MI I feel for them all. My biggest fear is delusions and hallucinations. I can’t imagine how tiring it has to be for their loved ones when they refuse care. Even when I’m doing everything right I can be a handful for my husband. God Bless us all

@@amber_Forever16 there are literally PSAs about it... when you're underwater people on the surface cannot hear you and splashing may happen but only at first and minimal, but splashing at s pool isnt exactly a red flag, and then there's nothing. There are stories of children drowning when their mom was 3ft away.... and are you a life guard or something? Why have you seen "many" people on the verge of drowning? I do understand the metaphor in the original comment, I just don't think it was very clever.
I like the analogy. I would actually go one step further to say imagine you can’t see them, and they can’t scream for help. When you’re feeling so overwhelmed, depressed and anxious, it’s so hard to ask for help because words don’t seem to adequately express how you feel.

My husband was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar. That's an illness that can be treated with no pills no hospital, the treating medication will not cure anything it will make the patients feel like vegetables. My husband was healed completely. Jesus is the only way people can get true healing physical and emotional. People with mental illness are going through spiritual torture. My husband was going through mental illness from childhood and only after he accepted jesus christ as his saviour at 24 years of age he was healed and delivered. We have been married for 6 years now and have a beautiful son that's 4 years old.
Hi I'm Christopher Remmey, they never put all of what happened. Me and my mom were doing meth and she would call the cops because I wouldn't sleep. She would hit me and now I'm in San Antonio State Hospital and she is cashing and using my SSI check for her bills. My house burned down in 2018 . @@isabelc6581 She should check for a local chapter of NAMI / familya they offer mental health support and crisis lines to loved ones. I won't be so hard on the mom, she's older. Not everyone is a psychology major. The more the mother can be educated about mental illness the better. It's obvious she's also caring for her elderly mother and has her hands full. I feel for that family.

I don't even have a mental illness and my doctor kind of disregarded my ADD and made it seem like I didn't need the diagnosis of dyslexia because "people walk through my office every day and I'm sure they have some kind of diagnosis like that, but they still made though life. Kids today are distracted by phones.. gum.. all that. During my time the teacher was able to take the unfocused kid into a room and make them do the work"
If that doesn't say enough on how bad doctors treat patients that can be somewhat more "clear" to understand, I am scared for those who suffer from something without clear understanding.

I agree. But I absolutely can't tolerate people in the criminal justice system not understanding mental illness. The lowest point in my 22 years was sitting in front of a judge, in truancy court, who denied anxiety being an actual mental illness. He would sit there and repeatedly tell me that anxiety wasn't keeping me home from school, I was essentially just a bad kid that refused to go to school. I heard countless times how he 'has anxiety some times but it always goes away' as if this fuckin' dude's nerves before sending someone to jail, was comparable to a clinically diagnosed anxiety disorder. Imagine being told at least once every month that you're mental illness is invalid. I got put on house arrest for almost the entirety of a summer break because of something I was born with and will have to deal with to some extent for the rest of my life.
I never helped me. I was institutionalized about a year ago, and all that did was make me more suicidal and anxious (I have depression and anxiety issues and was sent to the hospital because I had tried to hang myself off of a door knob).
I have been in situations like this. Thankfully I was able to isolate my self when it becomes a psychosis episode. I’m just so tired of having to explain my self to people. I’m not crazy, talking to my self helps me process and sort my thoughts. Attention and memory stuff is f u n.
Main point: we all have a lot of love to share with others. Just show some kindness and love to someone who’s in a bad place.

The average person doesn’t understand mental illness. So give family members some slack, they are trying to survive the mentally ill person too with no training and very little help or support and it’s all about money or lack of it.
Danny's little nephew is such a special, kind soul. My heart breaks for their pain. When his mother told him he will be treated differently because of the colour of his skin, his beautiful little innocent face had me breaking down. What a cruel world we live in where some children have to be taught this just to survive. Utterly heart breaking. I hope they thrive and heal.
My doctor is a black woman with small children. I plan on asking her if she says such disgusting things to her kiddos. Betcha she doesn't. And we wonder why these black children struggle. If my mom told me on a daily basis that I wouldn't make it in life bc I was black well I wouldn't make it either. I've dealt with a schizophrenia family member, it was terrifying, he refused to take his meds, and was abusive to my mother and my brothers. I ended up moving in at 17 with them, and stuff up to him, protected my brothers, and my mother, he lays hands on one of my brothers, and I went chest to chest with him, he realized I didn't have the fear my mother and brother had of him, he had conditioned them.
My mother called me one time, told me the relationship was over and she feared for her life, I did what I felt was right, but I knew was illegal... I say at her house with her, with my handgun 'laying in wait' with 'malice and aforethought'
I was ready to spend the rest of my life in prison for my mother.
He refused to take his meds because he said he felt like 'a zombie'... He was always anxious, and mentally and physically abusive towards my blood, and I went there to stop it.
Now she's divorced him.
Its like life in hell, for everyone involved. This is heartbreaking what people go through...makes my problems seem small.
It’s happened to me. Twice. Believe it or not....it’s help. They cannot leave you like that. At that point they are responsible for whatever you may do. You get medicated and therapy for a few days. I am lucky. After two times....I had a good therapist who helped me deal with Bi polar. My meds don’t cure it. I have to apply coping skills. I choose to do that. AND.....if I feel myself losing control.....I let someone know immediately. This past summer I felt a change coming on. I called Behavioral Health right here in city where I live and admitted MYSELF.
But there are SO many who cannot get the message....understand help.....etc. It’s a lifelong illness. Finally at 62 years old..... I am living a happy life....want to keep it that way....and will do what I have to to accomplish that. Sometimes it IS choice.
If you think I had it easy......I couldn’t begin to tell you what I’ve been through. Enough that therapist and Psychs can’t believe I survived it.

it's like a prison but more violence because people act out more often due to all the mentally unstable patients, it actually makes you feel worse, but in the end you're a danger to a society so there's no other option
It can be heartbreaking but, you have to ensure the safety of the person and others. These sitations can be deadly in many ways. Also, it is to help and I'm sure it sucks. I know...I do this everyday and have been in many situations with decomposed persons that may have caused myself to not go home.

You notice how the dog knew exactly the moment the tension was getting thick. I always felt dogs can sense that even without raised voices or sudden movements.
Having worked with dog’s & been a rescuer etc., a bad dog is a scared dog! Bad people are literally everywhere but dog’s can be man’s best friend.............they are mine!
My mother's labrodoodle is especially adept at that. She's a tough woman so people can't always tell if she's upset. But the dog can.
They’re really smart, they have seizure warning dogs so it wouldn’t surprise me if they can sense the physiological symptoms of tension. (High heart rate, blood pressure, anger, ect..)

Most often the hospitals don't help. They don't want to go back to the behavioral health unit because they suck! I work in this system, and it's broken.
Mental illness is so hard to understand, even psychiatrists still struggle with it to this day. You can't see it, smell it, touch it, it's not like having say a broken leg. I have Bipolar and one of the hardest things I have to do is to try and explain what "I feel like" or "What are you feeling". You cannot explain to people who don't suffer mental illness bcos they are never truly going to understand.
i remember being in the psych ward, a woman in our unit had suddenly become mute and would not speak. on the phone with the woman’s mother, she told her that psychology is an unfinished study. which broke my heart and made me slink back into my bed and cry. i have bipolar and ptsd as well.

My mother has paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar, and was beaten by the police and almost killed. She was charged with resisting arrest, which is so disgusting because of course someone with schizophrenia is going to resist arrest. The statistics don't lie, thank you for what you do to help!

I've been clinicaly depressed for the past 10 years and man that shit hit home. I can't speak for everybody but personally ever since this illness has taken a grip I don't feel a part of society anymore. I've been lucky enough to find people that were going through a number of things as well and we kind of formed our own society if you will, which is how we manage to function on a daily basis. Still, we had to create our own support system, society as a whole is just not willing or educated enough to recognize the fact that most of us are still normal, emotional human beings, just with a deteriorated mindset. The tradegy is that most people I know can be brought back on track with the right help and medication. The Stigma of being open about mental illness and seeking help is still incredibly high though.
Still, thanks to the producers of this documentary, it's rare that you see an unbiased, all around view on such a complex and ambigious problem. Also thanks to each and every individual reaching out to a person that they think is in distress, all of you might have saved lifes without even realizing it.

We don't need to defund police, we need to train them to be more like this, compassionate and understanding and educated and adaptive.

defunding means rerouting funds to be better spent elsewhere. for example less money on firearms, use that money so that all cops have min 80 hours mental health/de-escalation training.
Better training is not enough. Defunding the police puts the funds where therapy can be provided so these type of crisis don't even escalate to the point police needs to be called. There are people running around with mental illness that is not treated because they have nowhere to receive proper treatment or lack the funds. Prisons are the number one mental health providers right now. It is insane. That's not where mental illness should be treated.

This video proves the police were trying to make real strides in improving the interactions with the mentally ill. The last thing we need to do is defund the police. Restructuring is the answer. @@willh7690 We do not live in the 18th century anymore. I work in mental health, so I know what I am talking about. Does the system need improvement? Sure! And that's why funding is so important! If you saw the whole video you must be aware that in the US funding had been cut to the point where many patients have nowhere to go or no services they can afford. As long as getting a gun is cheaper than getting good long term therapy we have a huge problem. Just look at some other countries and how they successfully deal with funding their police department versus social and human service institutions.

About to be even more broken once she's taken during an already stressful situation, held against her will, drugged against her will, turned against most of the people in her life because she's been branded by the system, and possibly even abused behind closed doors, which happened to me ar both the psych wards I was placed in.

I went into a psych hold as I was seeking treatment for detox and couldn't stay off drugs so I knew they wouldn't let me out and if have no way of getting my drug of choice in there. But seeing how others were treated in crisis was truly eye opening and scared me shitless. They don't deal with the problem, they drug them to sleep and then let them on their way. It's so sad. And it's got to be terrifying. So I really couldn't agree with you more. Hopefully better methods and more understanding will be found in the years to come
The official was correct they need more than only 40 hrs of training but i congratulate them on requiring the 40hr training. It should be required nationwide.

That was a truly touching documentary. My heart goes out to all of those suffering from mental health and the families involved. Even more so to the amazing mother and strong woman that was Marketta. I had to google the outcome of the case and it truly saddened me that officer Brewer was disgustingly found not guilty and was even reinstated back as an officer and allowed to continue working on the force. That truly saddened and shocked me. As for Chris I am just glad it was only assault and that he didn't fatally hurt one of his family members as I truly feel if he keeps on being let down by the system and with his condition clearly deteriorating it's only a matter of time. My heart goes out to them all.

My heart aches for Chris.I’m in tears watching him I can’t imagine the distress he faces every second of the day believing that’s not his mom or grandma and he can’t prove it (Because it’s not real). He must feel so trapped and alone. I hope he is able to accept the medicine one day and work on getting help

thats a real fear . i think being a mom of someone with a mental illness you stop fearing for your own life and fear for your child being hurt or in the wrong place at the wrong time. and for people around your child that can possibly be hurt by your child .my son has a mental illness and since kindergarten i feared for the other children .90% of the time my son is fine and a happy child its the other 10% of the time i fear he can snap and hurt someone . i couldn't live happily if i knew my child hurt someone else . even if he cant help it . or cant control himself . being a mom with a child of mental illness we go through alot .but god gives special babies to special moms . thats what i truly believe. no one else will love them like their moms .

I'm a Peer Recovery Specialist for alcoholism addiction and mental health disorders. I too suffered from addiction issues and had mental health problems and through the support of a few beautiful people who also knew the way it felt bad went through treatment and therapy and they saved me! I'm giving back by simply understanding and caring unconditionally for others. Look in the beginning I blamed everything else and then I got sober and started to take all the blame and internalize it all and through years of educating myself and forgiveness of everything I learned it's no ones fault....its life and we all play parts in it. We get much better at it through experience and finding hope and having faith. I'm so very Blessed to understand and I have faith that all the pain is only temporary. I have seen the most beautiful things made from broken pieces. We tell our stories and touch others with them in ways that last. Bless anyone who needs it tonight lord, and use me to help your children lord I want to help, and give love and teach of forgiveness. In your name Amen.

I totally feel what Martha feels. My youngest has schizophrenia and bipolar. Thankfully I only ever had to cal 911 on him once and he was cooperative. He's been to the hospital several times but admitted only once to be stabilized. When the officer told Martha that he was going to be kept in the hospital, I said out loud no they won't. They never do. My child prefers to live on the street and moving around alot. I have been able to keep some track of him because he he gets arrested on a regular basis. I just know someday I will get the worst news any parent can get.
I truly appreciate that these units exist but the broken healthcare system completely negates the good the units do.
First off I hope the police that helped these people see this. THANK YOU. We need more like you. I've had so many bad situations with police officers. I've met some great ones too. The last 2 guys I've had a relationship with have killed themselves. The last one I was with threat to kill himself several times and I always called police or emergency responce. The last time they came we couldn't find him. I finally found him after a few hours of driving around looking for him. One of the emergency response guys told me that I was wasting man hour and he was tired of coming out. The last time he threatened to kill himself I didn't call anybody. The emergency response guy that said he was sick of me calling them.. came to my door to let me know he killed himself. I have flashbacks when I have to deal with a male officer because of what another cop did to me over 20yrs ago. I also have dealt with mental health issues all my life since I was 7yrs old. People seem to think people with mental health issues are crazy and out of there mind. People with mental health issues have different degrees of issues. I've been in therapy and have taken my medication since I was 15. I've never gone off my meds. I actually have been very fortunate. I had my dream job for almost 5yrs. I worked at the crisis center and kind of like a halfway house were I ran groups and helped people with mental health issues and I loved it. Some people just are not cut out to do anything with mental health issues. Some get burned out. I just want to let you guys know that I am thankful for this documentary and for the officers that get it and are trying to make a difference. Thank you for trying to understand and treating people with kindness and empathy when they need it the most. We need this program in every city.

@Johnnie Boi I disagree, even professionals struggle to control them, especially without meds. I live with someone who has BPD (Form of Bipolar) and its so difficult, we're not taught to deal with that I cant imagine living with someone with full Bipolar and Schizophrenia must be so heartbreaking and sad. Its so easy to blame parents/relatives when really it is that person doing it, its not their actual selves but its THEM, Cant speak for everyone but what can you do as relatives.

I hate that people blame parents all the time, yes of course sometimes its the parents fault but a lot of the time it isn't. Mental Health definitely can be parents fault because depression/anxiety are things that can come on, mental illness is something either a trigger/genes, so theres not really much you can do. You spend so much time trying to help them but really theres nothing you can do, it has to come from them. Its their battle in their own head, you can only do so much in terms of making them comfortable. For us its so hard because you have to walk on eggshells a little bit around those kinds of people, doing it in your own safe space (home) is really tiring. (BTW Im not the parent Im a sibling so its not a biased opinion)

De-escalation training is a major part of our training. But the way we are trained to de-escalate training should be tweaked. Most of it is legit though. Atleast in my department.

I’ve had some interactions with CIT officers. They honestly the best. I recently have had suicidal ideations and overdosed twice. They had to talk me into going to the hospital. Please to those who are going through a hard time reach out to your support team or call a local crisis hotline. I know it’s easier said then done. Still struggling myself but slowly working with the help from others how to manage my depression and anxiety.
These guys are really making a difference, the powers that be would be wise to give them the tools they need (including educational components for new officers).... thanks for making their innovative work known, I hope many more police forces use it as a model.

Poor woman probably had postpartum depression like my mom when she had my sister... I’m glad nothing bad happened to me or my sister but my mom having to hide her mental illness to stay strong and watch over us isn’t healthy and refusing medication. In the Latino community (pretty much any color of race) it’s strictly taboo to talk about mental illness. Hopefully every woman with a newborn makes sure that they get help..

T DRIT what I think the point of the reply is that really forgiveness is something that can help the person let go of all the anger and pain and hatred but it is not meant to be something people should EVER feel obligated to do. what happened cannot be undone and because of the actions of the police a loving family member was taken from them. It is wrong to just forgive them because it will happen again and it IS HAPPENING right now to someone. The only lessons that can be learned are on the side of law enforcement and the procedural handlings of situations like these. Sadly changes are not made in way that reduces these things from happening. Nobody HAS to forgive and from what I saw the police never apologized or admitted to wrong doing. It is not justice when nothing is done to stop this from happening. I guess T DIRT has never been faced with this kind of senseless loss and can’t understand that there are better things than forgiving the police like CHANGING POLICY so that his death could be the last of this type. I don’t understand why other people think they can judge this family or this mother. SuperMarbelle if they have insurance they can most certainly afford it... especially if they’re on Medicaid which most of them are because they can’t work. Options are available... people just have to reach out and take them.
Dena Barton the sad thing is medication doesn't solve the problem. It only suppresses and makes it worse overtime while turning them into zombies. They tried giving my brother a cocktail of antipsychotics when he was just 13 for ADHD and the medication made him start hearing voices yet his "hyperactivity" was only being suppressed because it turned him into a walking zombie that looked like a heroin junkie. I had him stop taking them and the side effects subsided. I'd argue that having ADHD is much better than having Schizophrenia. I urge you to educate yourself further on these matters before speaking on them, please.

I know what chris's parents are going through. My baby brother is schizophrenic and he won't get help and he's always burning holes in stuff and he says he has a friend named blue. He screams and yells talking to himself and he thinks the government is always watching him through his windows. Its hard to watch my brother go through this. When he was younger he was normal then 1 day something snapped in his brain causing him to be like this.
All of our officers need this training nationwide! Not just for the offenders protection but for also our officers!! I have researched for years mental health in regards to someone close to me who is bi polar. I finally got him to take his meds but its a different day daily. I hope Chris finally got the help he so desperately needs. I pray every state can really see how important the knowledge of understanding mental health is. Great documentary 🏅

I have mental illnesses as well, and there is always that possibility- but it’s about trying to stay positive, using your coping tools for whatever situation you’re in, taking it day by day, taking your meds ( if there are any you’re taking) the correct way, and if you’re not in therapy it’s such a good tool even if you’re feeling fine to have as extra backup for your heart and mind. You got this. I know you do. Hang in there and stay positive! ♥️

I have also suffered from Mental illness for 21 years now. From June 2017- March 2019, I had serious Mental Health issues and I was very sick. I was struggling with suicidal ideation and chronic headaches and I was very depressed. This was the worst time in life. I was unable to work for two years because of my severe Mental illness. Now I have an excellent psychiatrist that I see frequently and I am on a anti-depressant to manage my headaches. I have also struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation due to personal family issues in the past. I do believe that Police Officers in my opinion in Ontario, Canada are excellent and they want to help people suffering from mental illness to get better by seeing a psychiatrist. I am much better now since I am seeing an excellent psychiatrist in Ontario, Canada and I am on the correct psychiatric medication. I hope my post helps someone suffering from mental illness to seek out help by seeing a psychiatrist.Thank you, Sincerely, Richard Manduch 😊😉🇨🇦
