  • Why was Kasper not at Jamie Vardy’s house to watch Leicester win the Premier League? What impact did being one of the first on the scene at the helicopter crash that killed Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha have on his life? How did growing up with the likes of Eric Cantona, Steve Bruce and his father Peter give him a burning desire to succeed that was unmatched by his peers?
Gary is joined by Premier League and FA Cup winner Kasper Schmeichel to discuss his incredible life in football so far and how Denmark are planning to stop England at the Euros.

The best way to describe how insane that Leicester title win is, it kinda gets forgotten like it didn’t happen, like it wasn’t real, it still doesn’t feel real. Even just thinking about it now, it’s like it happened in a different realm, in a season, in league separate from the one we’ve been watching for 30years, that’s how much of an outlier it was, how much of an unbelievable anomaly it was. It’s so hard to grasp and compute just how big of an achievement it was.

One of the best interviews I have seen - the insight into the world of goalkeeping at the professional level was eye opening. Kasper has always impressed me on the pitch but this interview has shown me that he is truly a quality human being , humble, intelligent and thoughtful. It doesn’t surprise me as I have always held his father in high regard on and off the pitch. Thank you Gary Lineker!!!

Us people outside football have always have this strange perception of footballers being not quite bright. For me, personally, I believe this is due to my dealings with the failed footballers I've played against in amateur leagues and in other matches. But listening to Kasper, so well spoken, the way he expresses himself, his vocabulary and obvious intelligence - I must admit I'm in awe. Great guy, thanks for this interview!

1:12:40 I have a good friend who is a lifelong Leicester fan from Leicestershire. The day that helicopter went down was one of the darkest for the city in his eyes. That man brought hope and improvements to more than the club, the entire city felt his impact. Absolute tragedy for the whole community, football or not 😓

Bloody hell Kasper! I’ve been a Leicester supporter for 60 years and your recollections of the club and the miracle of 2016 brought on a severe attack of hay fever.
Gary, sign him up before someone else does. His ability to articulate in such an engaging way is a rare quality. He speaks from such a genuine and honest perspective. His memories of the Leicester owner and Christian Eriksen were absolutely captivating on the edge of your seat stuff. Theres no way this man wouldn’t be able to provide something special to football commentary or just a break down of the game on a weekly programme. When he said Leicester will always be his team, it just highlighted what a special club it is. It’ll never be a world beater, but it has that something special that captures the interest and hearts of many neutrals. They should make a film about it and start from Leicester losing in the playoffs to Watford in that bizarre game that many forget was the catalyst for all that was to come.

Great in depth interview, but Kasper forgot his actual first ever professional game wasn't for Bury! It was for Darlington, in which they won 2-1 against Peterbourgh United, his first clean sheet came in the next against Grimsby. Over all Kasper played four games on loan for Darlington, before his loan spell at Bury. I've even got a photo of his dad Peter with my son and his friend watching his debut that day. 😊
