    I have owned my 2015 Subaru 3.6 for 6 years. In no paperwork was it ever said to have remote start (certified preowned but bought from the original dealership that sold it new). I saw a pamphlet in the manual holder that mentioned a smart remote start on the fob. I decided for kicks I'd try this. Sure as crap it fired up. I would have been less surprised had I pulled a rabbit out of a hat. ALL THE YEARS I DIDN'T KNOW.

      How is that possible without a remote starter installed? I have 2016 legacy 3.6R Limited since 2016. I just tried it and as expected it did not work.

    • @TheToonamiRevolution
      @TheToonamiRevolution Месяц назад

      @Bill123321 my guess is they had it installed later, or it came with the car originally and no one ever documented it. You wouldn't even know it was there unless you tried it. Bad techs overlooking it. To be frank the dealership sold it to me certified but before I drove it off the lot I had to have them fix a lot of things. Cv axle was shot, and rear wiper didn't work. So a typical turn and burn sale.

    Thank you for clarifying that without the remote start module installed in the _engine_ , no hardware based remote start will function. As others have indicated, the phone-based remote start is a completely different beast, relying instead on an adequate data connection for both the phone and the car. This is not necessarily a given everywhere in the US, and it has a yearly fee for the continued network capability. In the short run it's cheaper, but in the long run it can get pricey. I like the fact that the hardware option is available, and that in a pinch you can use the regular key fob (at reduced range).
    When I inquired about this with Subaru, they claimed that installing the remote access transmitter into the regular access key fob would compromise its range, and that's why they have kept it separate.

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC
      @JasonJarrettUSMC  Месяц назад

      Right on. I've always told people you sacrifice some range with the regular fob over the smaller one.

    The only thing I’m failing to understand is how the Subaru could have remote start capability with Starlink while not having a remote start module installed.

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC
      @JasonJarrettUSMC  Год назад +7

      2 separate things. Remote start through Starlink with the MySubaru app is done through a telematics unit. Almost every Subaru that is made has this installed. Remote start with the key fob is through the remote start module, which most Subaru's DO NOT have installed from the factory.

    pretty dumb that a 2024.model crosstrek premium with keykess fob has to have an additional fob and modeule to remote start (unless you use the app of course which is cool but not always handy say, if carrying groceries ir whatever and then having to screw with unlocking your phone, then unlocking the app etc. Seems like a simple setup in the keyless fob would have made much more sense.

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC

      Technically, if you install the module, you do not have to have that 2nd fob. The key fob can start the car once a remote start module is installed, no need to carry the other fob. As for the other stuff, voice your opinion to Subaru.

  • @ettilapse
    @ettilapse Год назад

    Hey there, thanks for the quick, to the point video.
    I have a question that always ends with a variation of "No, you need the push button to remote start - these two fobs are the same," when I ask them if my cars equipped for the non push to start fob.
    Does the 2023 Crosstrek SE with the 8in display, black wheels, approach lights, etc., come pre-built with a remote start Module and/or climate control with the starlink subscriptions in the mysub app? Or did the finance guy in need of solving a major mistake mislead me to get my problem solved quickly without a scene? Ha.
    The reason I even have it in my head is, I didn't originally purchase the SE, I was offered the SE because they sold my car to someone else, and they were really trying to settle the dispute. Finance brought it up, didn't even ask, but he said that it comes ready to go, just gotta buy the fob.
    In case the story is intriguing I'll try to keep it brief, there was a lot of funny business. But this, among many other reasons, is why I can't trust them:
    I pre-ordered dark Grey metallic, month later I get the call it's ready. I'm 5 mins from dealer and salesman called me to say he gave me the wrong Vin months ago. "Make sure you call your insurance and switch it to 'this' vin before you get here." so I do. Didn't think twice, I was so excited. I signed almost every paper until he drives down a base model in ice silver. I thought maybe I'm confused at first but I knew as soon as I got in the car. They either sold it or valet wrecked it. He tried to convince me I ordered the base ice silver while I'm signing papers for a premium dark grey lol.... Anyway, they needed to make it right asap and only had silvers and one SE, I think the SE was a fair tradeoff for the mistake, I wasn't going to wait another month. I'm also curious to your thoughts on this, ever seen this before? I figured he just covered for someone who sold my car.

    • @ettilapse
      @ettilapse Год назад

      It's worth mentioning that they forgot to enable my starlink services and I ended up having to bring the car in for a whole week while they enabled it, right after the purchase.

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC
      @JasonJarrettUSMC  Год назад

      When it comes to remote start & the MySubaru app, your Crosstrek must have a push button start to be able to use that. Will not work with a turn key.
      Remote start options for a turn key would be to have the remote start installed by the service department that would allow you to be able to remote start the vehicle. You would get a little keyfob for starting the car with, like in my video.
      I don't ever see Subaru's coming in from the factory with the remote start modules installed on them anymore. We used to get some at my dealership from time-to-time, but haven't seen any since COVID started a few years back.
      I did a video where I gave my thoughts on remote starts, welcome to watch it if you want too. ruclips.net/video/naquOfSrom0/видео.html

    Hey Jason! Good info. I have a 2024 Outback Limited XT. Just bought it new. When I use Apple Car Play, I get limited keypad access that pops up. It wouldn’t be a big deal, but when I use Siri to call my parents I have to press 8 to confirm I am not a telemarketer. I only need to press one key, but can’t. Will this go away if I plug my phone in the USB port instead? If so are there any other settings on the display or phone I need to do. Thanks!

      Try applying the parking brake when stopped. Sometimes, AppleCarplay keyboard access can be limited if it thinks you're driving.
      Under phone on CarPlay, you should have access to a keypad to hit that 8 you need to.
      Try plugging it in & see what happens. It can't hurt.

    My parents have 2014 forester premium. They paid to have a remote start put in, not by a subaru dealer though. They have fobs but the key fob for the car actually remote starts it too. My question is how do you tell if the car originally came with one, it's the premium submodel, do aftermarket starters allow this or is it possible they now have two remote starters on it.

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC
      @JasonJarrettUSMC  Год назад

      One way to know if the car originally came with one would be to look on the window sticker that would have been on the vehicle when it was brand new, if you have it. The vehicle would have also came with keyfobs, like the one in my video, for remote starting it. If you want to provide the last 8 numbers of the VIN for the vehicle I could see if I can find any information on it.
      As for your question on aftermarket remote starts I cannot speak on them, as I really don't know anything about them. There is always the possibility the aftermarket remote start might work with the keyfobs, but I cannot say for sure.

      @JasonJarrettUSMC  Год назад

      Well it's difficult to answer how for back that feature goes. If I remember correctly the Forester I used in the video was a 2018. So it will work from 2018 up to the current 2023's. I tried a Google search on it, but didn't find any good answers. I don't know what your situation is, if your looking to purchase a Forester or already have one & want to see if you can do this, but you can check the owners manual. If that feature is available it will talk about it in the manual. Next time I see my service manager I will see if he might have any idea how far the feature goes back.

    if I have starlink I can remotely start my car using the My Subaru app.. SO yes I do have the ability to remote start my car already installed in my Subaru Touring XT using the subaru app.. So why isnt it compatible using a key fob or a push button kind of remote start fob?

    • @JasonJarrettUSMC

      Because those remote starts use different things to function.
      Remote start through app uses telematics unit. Remote start through fob uses a remote start module, which hardly any Subaru's come with installed from factory. You would need to have that installed.

    I talked to Subaru drivers who have a car from Canada (or there is a Canada region in the settings), so as you say, they easily changed Fahrenheit to degrees and they had more languages, including Russian
    therefore, I am interested in the possibility of changing the region to Canada, especially since I am sure that such an opportunity exists ___if you know how to enter and enter the special service menu___

      Same here. My last 3 vehicles HAVE remote start on the fob. I dont want to PAY a fee to use an app on a phone to tell the car in my parents/friends driveway to start as i'm getting ready to leave. Most times I use the remote start is in a parking lot at work 40 ft from where i'm at, just fire my truck up and let it warm up a few minutes before I get off work. Simple reach in my pocket, press the button and done. I dont use remote start at home cause it's in a heated garage.. Just when i'm in a parking lot in the winter or at work. Grab phone, unlock phone, get to app, open app, wait to load, start vehicle. WAIT for vehicle to start... put phone away. Or..... press button on fob.
      Sorry, i rarely even use my phone for anything but calls/text anymore. 5 year old phone with no desire to upgrade until it dies. Using a phone to start my car is a huge step backwards. I guess if a subaru is all you've ever owned... or you are glued to your phone all day, i guess that works for you.
      Looking to buy a Wilderness and finding out the simple features i've had for ever.... need a subscription fee. Looking at Starlink, remote start the only thing i'd want...
      Just looked online, since 2000 almost every manufacturer has RS available or standard across their entire lineup. Some do require a sub, most do not. (Auto vehicles anyway, manuals never gets love) a $19k Nissan Versa is standard.... a $40k Outback requires a subscription lol.
      Not a deal breaker... but this would explain why the co-worker with the subaru always gets in his forrester to start it during winter, then clears the snow off his seat and the windows while I have half the snow melted before i get to my truck.
      The question is, can I get the $400 factory instal fob... and leave it at home and just use the keyfob like in the video?

      @backlash2869 Yes, you could leave the little fob at home & start with key fob, but there is a sacrifice I mentioned in the video.

      @@JasonJarrettUSMC So just watched the video again.... are you talking the range? so you're saying the "trade off" is that it would be like EVERY OTHER CAR MANUFACTURER? My truck is like 50 ft, most vehicles with Key Fob start is 30-50ish ft.
      And you do know that in many states it's ILLEGAL to remote start a vehicle without a driver in vehicle... State I live in, it's legal in a driveway NOT in public, state i work in 20 miles away.... it is illegal if it's not in a driveway, and over 3 minutes in total i think. so the range is a non issue. anti-idling laws in a ton of states, some have time limits others do not... car running with no driver in it?... illegal in like 30 states now. being able to start my car from a a mile away is stupid, standing near it and starting it while i clean the snow off before i get in... all i need.
      www.motorbiscuit.com/remotely-starting-car-illegal-your-state/ list of somewhat current anti idle laws for example. Mostly aimed at commercial truck, but all include passenger vehicles. Check with your insurance, some will not cover anything it you had it running outside your driveway, theft of contents or actual car.
      And FYI, many cars can actually drive away with the key fob NOT in vehicle after remote start. turn car off and it wont start again until fob near though.. My mom found this out with her Kia. Remote started car from house, left keys in door of house when she dropped something... was close enough to car to unlock door and drive away, got to store... and realized what happened.

      Add a remote start module, then it will.

    This doesn't seem like a hidden feature. It's a paid feature.

      Majority of Subaru owners who pay for the remote start have no idea this exists. They are shown how to use the little fob for starting the car & that's it.

      @@JasonJarrettUSMC It's strange Subaru gives you a separate fob for that. Who wants to carry an extra fob? They just need to educate the customer. BTW I did really enjoy your video on the voice commands with the head unit. Really helped me out. TY

    I have a 2018 Subaru Outback 3.6 with the original starter. He always worked well. For 1 month, the starter has been working but the vehicle has stopped after 3-4 min and 3 beeps on the controller. What can be the problem?

      Ask for parts for help at your local Subaru dealership. They change those out on a regular basis & should be able to help.
