      As a paid professional, he should have given only half effort. That way, he is less accountable and if the shot still happened to go in the paid professional goalie would be even more embarrassed. /s

    Baseball went through this. Showboat or jog too slow after a home run and someone was getting thrown at. It doesn’t happen as much anymore since the penalty for doing so has gotten more severe. The NHL could institute a “retaliation” penalty in similar situations. What has happened in MLB is that the announcers have stopped taking a negative position on celebrations and instead paint them as light-hearted expressions as long as there isn’t outright taunting, like pointing, yelling, or direct mocking of the opponent, and the players, for their part, have accepted it. Rarely do you see a pitcher pay much attention to a batter who’s just hit a homer off of them. They turn their attention to the next batter and the game goes on

So as an old fart, I was certainly into "analytics" when it was first talked about. I've thought since childhood that reducing things to data is the best way to figure out what the hell is going on. However, getting a taste of stats and data collection through working Q.A. in manufacturing, I know that definitions, parameters and data collection have to be spot on or the numbers mean nothing. I suspect a lot of Analytics we are presented with are dubious due to inconsistent data collection, bad definitions, etc.

    So in baseball, you do hear a bit about running up the score. A Chicago White Sox player got in trouble with his team's manager (basically the coach) pretty publicly a few years back after hitting a home run off of a position player who came in to pitch (which only happens in blowouts). Of course, said manager is also no longer managing, but you see these "old school" unwritten rules dinosaurs in every sport. And thankfully people generally push back on that stuff because it's archaic and silly. Who are you to tell a player when he can and cannot swing due to the "unwritten rules" or something, especially when he's a fringe MLB player and not a star who's guaranteed a spot on the team next year?
    People also moan about analytics changing how managers manage, how players play, and so on. Celebrating home runs has also been a point of contention, with some people upset about bat flips and watching the ball fly and some embracing that.

    Anyone complaining about running up the score is too young to remember the 1970's when you had the California Seals, the KC Scouts and the early Caps. With the current intentionally created parity in hockey there are no great teams and no really bad teams any more so you don't get 14-2 scores like Buffalo once beat Washington by. A 6-1 score is considered piling on nowadays when that run of the mill when the Caps or Scouts or Dead Wings played a team like Montreal, Boston or the Islanders. Nobody thought it was a big deal.

    As a Capitals fan, I love how excited Ovechkin gets when he scores a goal. And he's done it before more than anyone other than Gretzky. But he still gets excited. And I think that's how it should be.

    Meanwhile Vally goes MIA when Zegras and everyone else does the Michigan or try. back in my day we didnt cry so much. Ive seen the forsberg move work a few years ago and noone cried. Im not a fan of the analytics, they are useful but so are the eye tests.

      Not true. Vally has expressed many times that he doesn't like The Michigan.

    The idea of not continuing to run up a score out of respect for the losing team is ridiculous to me in professional sports. This isn't a 9 year old in house league where they need the mercy rule because otherwise the 9 year old is going to go home and ball his eyes out over losing 13 to 2. These are professional freaking athletes. If they're bad pump them for every goal you can get. Don't let up " out of respect." They are professionals and as you said Shannon have they considered just not being bad. I'm sorry if you make millions of dollars a year as a professional sports player you have no right to be a whiny little baby about another team running up the score on you. Anyone who has that take needs to do some personal reflection because come on grow up. Especially in hockey for a sport that touts toughness there are a lot of Unwritten rules that imply being the complete opposite of tough and actually being complete babies and acting like children. There are a lot of very contradictory aspects to the social side of hockey that mainly revolve around look at us we are so tough but also you're not allowed to do that because It embarrasses me so I'm going to whine like a baby and be mad about you being better than me. So are you tough or are you a whiner? Make up your mind. That's how I feel when I hear garbage takes like that. I am glad you get it THG.

    How dare you bring your first unit out in a blowout game. Now they'll score more goals, and then I can't complain about how they had a down year. Wait a minute, they still did.

    I mean not long ago the Chicago Whitesox player hit a homerun to make the game 15-1 or something and got chewed out by his own manager. All sports have unwritten rules and they are just ridiculous.

    real ones remember when the slapshot was illegal because the puck should stay on the ice and no one really could manage to shot the puck with precision. then came Boom Boom Geoffrion with his precise slapshot and the league changed. neanderthal hockey fans will never not get angry over stupid stuff like this and it's been a staple of the NHL for a century.

    Just for the record, running up the score in the MLB is a big no-no (even though it's the sport where comebacks are the most possible). If you swing at a 3-0 pitch you're going to get hit because you hurt the poor pitcher's feelings

    Hughes didn't score, so whatever he was doing didn't work. This is a non-problem. Dumb comment from a witless commentator.

    Broadcast in general needs fresher/newer perspectives. The better analysts are Kevin Bieksa, PK Subban etc. who have played the game in recent years and understand the modern game. Or older players who have an open mind to learn and understand the game today instead of going back to their playing days as reference.

    I've never understood why some people defend two human beings beating each other to a pulp so vehemently. Pretty sad when you think about it, how little we have evolved as a species over the last few thousand years.

    Honestly I hate the 'expected goals for' analytics. Any of the 'expected..."
    Fluke goals happen all the time and nasty saces happen all the time. Just measure the Grade A chances that were saved. From what I understand expected goals for is also accounting for zone time. Its the most pointless analytic to me.

    I dont mind if commentators talk about how it used to be......if....... its not every other play. And as long as it related to the play in the game. Something which swedish commentators do alot starts to talk about an match back in the 1980 or such.... what does that tell the audence (most likely that this match is borinng to watch).

    Back in my day that wasn't a penalty. And thank goodness that changed. Watching 90s hockey with somebody water skiing behind the guy with the puck was awful.

    rangers are STINKO ! have gone straight downhill since decent start , and back in my day = from an old goalie =goalies had no masks, pads were small & helmets were decades away , every team had a goon or 2 to stand up for teammates or take out other team's top guys , glad as hell the goonery had to disappear as the european game brought finesse .. you can't hit what you cant catch !

    Maybe this commentary was just a way to distract people from how the game went. Nobody is talking about Bratt's 4 point game or Jack 2 goals that went in. Nope, just this guy getting mad about the breakaway that didn't result in a goal anyway.🧐

    Watching these girls on "#hockeytwt" go off about how much of a clown vally is for saying what he said had me spinning. The instagram remark might have been a slight shot at Hughes, but hey, he's a rangers analyst, not a devils analyst. The overarching point he was making was that there is absolutely no drive or compete left on that rangers team up and down the lineup. And he's right, but frankly I love to see it.

    • @ysakoko
      @ysakoko 13 часов назад

      It can be two things at once. I guarantee you if it was any other devils player, Valiquette would have just criticized the Rangers D, maybe just say that you can't let the other team style on you like that. Calling Jack "disrespectful" and "instagram hockey" is unnecessary in my opinion, tipping towards personal. Something about Jack makes Valiquette go a little further than normal, you see it in his twitter interactions with devils fans, his place in the hughes/kakko debate since the draft.
      It only gets blown up like this cause the game was on nhl network and people outside the market got to see this.

      @tydrenning6162 13 часов назад

      @ysakoko we're in agreement, he's shown his ass as an analyst multiple times prior, but I do think it was overblown on Twitter and in the post-game as if it wasn't mostly just a color guy trying to come with a hot take at his franchise that seems to be slipping

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello 12 часов назад

      I think the problem with the Rangers is that their best player is unsigned and headed towards free agency. Saw the same thing happen with the Islanders & Tavares. The team is just up in the air waiting for something to happen, like they're in limbo. The solution is to sign Shesterkin. They're going to piss away the season and end up signing him anyway for what they're refusing to pay him now.

    • @tydrenning6162
      @tydrenning6162 11 часов назад

      @@RRaquello they also went all in on long term contracts on players aging into 35 years old with trouba, Mika, kreider, and trochek. This core wasn't meant to be imploding like this, which is why I think they're hesitating to sign shesty. No point in signing him if you're gonna have to mortgage the whole core to rebuild when Quick looks solid too, might as well ship him off with the rest and tear it all down
