First time in a LONG time I feel sustainable hope in this team. The biggest leap outside of player development is tackling our demons against Winnipeg, Colorado and Dallas.
I miss Matt zuccarello when he was with the rangers I’m glad he’s doing good for your team I still remember the boogeyman I used to watch him before he went to the rangers he’s literally the reason why I started watching wild games more and zuccarello too I still remember when the crowd would chant boogard”s name against the ducks and broke someone’s cheekbone still gives me chills til this day
Honestly right now I would say Minnesota has one of the brightest futures in the league. A rare combo of current success, premier tallent, and tons of cap space going forward
Shannon, since I found your channel last year you have been my go to person for hockey information. The talking heads on ESPN and the other networks don't do it for me anymore, I turn to you.
Bill G on July 1st when the Wild emerge from cap hell: Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station. Kaprizov you may fire when ready...
They also got a great prospect pool. With guys like Danila Yurov, Liam Oghren, Riley Heidt, Zeev Bium, Carson Lambos, Jack Peart, Among others but those are their most well known ones that weren’t mentioned during the video
@ even if the others don’t turn into much having that much prospect depth with mostly later picks in the first other than Buim and having guys like Rossi and Faber graduate last year is still good. Pretty much all the other top pools are of teams that haven’t been good for a couple year as well
@@minnesotavikingsfan6403 sure but don’t delusional on these prospects either. Biuim and yurov are the real gems here, but the again nobody knows how everything is going to turn out. It’s good to have prospect depth but most of these guys don’t end up having and nhl career
As a Wild fan, I know the big thing for me is we need to get past our second round demons. However this shows that all the work Guerin and Brackett put into this team wasn’t a waste. They have a top tier squad in hockey, one of the deepest farm systems, and most importantly are gonna get a ton of cash with the Parise-Suter Buyouts ending this year. All I can say is for now stick the course, because my grandad always said “Don’t fix what ain’t broke”.
The question really is where would you get an elite center. Maybe in the pipeline, there are a few options, but very unlikely they draft anyone now with how good they are and they have limited trade potential. So UFA or their own pipeline are the two most likely. Hope you guys get someone elite though. Great team without it though too.
Look out for them if they get past the first round. They play a tough game and Kaprizov is one of those few players that can seemingly take the game over at will. If everything on that team stays clicking they’ll be dangerous. -Jets fan
It's sad that we've never really been a legitimately good franchise. The Wild being a powerhouse would be great for the NHL and obviously this state. I hope we're building something special
This Jets Fanatic knows the level of compete the Wild have. As their arch nemesis, every time the Jets face them, the game is like a playoff match. There always seems to be a key injury for both teams as well as a result of these games.
1st round win. Then they turn into a juggernaut after this season. 1) they’re great NOW 2) kaprizov 3) awesome prospect pool 4) cap money finally freed up
Fabers 8.5 mil contract will eat some of that cap space next season. He's on an ELC right now. I think Wallstedt has signed at 2 year 2mil deal to start next season. There will still be money to spend . Its looking good for Wild
Didn't touch on this, but they have some good prospects coming up in the next year as well. Danilla Yurov, Liam Ohgren, and Riley Heidt on the forward group. Buium and Jiricek (assuming they can develop him) on the back end. Wallstedt at Goalie. The window really opens next season and honestly stays open for quite some time. Its hard not seeing them competing for a stanley cup in the next 1-3 years.
Thanks for the video! Wild are indeed looking strong and that's good insight! We'll see how the playoffs pan out because they may make moves if they don't produce post-season.
Faber's 8.5 mil cap hit goes into effect next season plus Middleton's extension at 4.35 mil starts in next year so about 9.5 mil of that $ is already spent. I would say that Boeser would be their target if they were to go after a big name FA in the upcoming offseason, and could see Billy G making that a reality by acquiring him at the trade deadline this year and extending him right away.
I said last year that Minny was in good shape considering that cap penalty. With that mostly coming off the books next year, the Wild are going to be in great shape.
Well, he is only 22 and goalies develop slow, so it is a possibility i guess, but his NA start has not been great, not even decent. lots work ahead if he achieves that what you described.
With the first Great Expansion (1967), many people on the Canadian prairies became Minnesota North Stars fans. It may not be the same ‘franchise’ now, but it’s the same location. I’d love to see Minnesota win the Cup, even though they’re not my favourites.
If you had told me before the season that the Wild would be the best performing of my top 4 teams I probably would've said "but Colorado?" I really hope they maintain this pace, they've been underdogs for too long. Also a cup for Flower in his final season would be legendary.
I love how well the team is performing. I hope they can keep their core players and stay healthy. Although it's been a long time, I still feel a bit bitter about the Dallas Stars taking the name with them to Texas. I will always be a North Stars fan and remain hopeful that the team will wear the emblem again someday. If that happens, I would buy that jersey immediately. I think Kaprizov will take up much of that cap space when he resigns #NormGreenStillSucks
Great analysis of the $ situation and potential trades. I’ve been a Wild fan since their inception, and without a doubt this is the best lineup they’ve ever had. Good balance of quality veterans, current (Kaprizov) and budding (Boldy) superstars, great young talent (Faber, Rossi), stellar goaltending, and very promising prospects. I’m not certain they can contend for the cup this year, but I can see them getting past the first round. If they add one more offensive stud (like Marner, Boeser, or Ehlers), I could see them hoisting the Cup. Exciting time to be a Wild fan! P.S. - Guerin is proving his detractors wrong. His moves overall are paying off and he has a vision. One of those moves was hiring John Hynes who is way better than Dean Evason. Jack Adams award?
This team has been a pleasant surprise, and I agree that they could be dangerous for quite a few years to come. Excellent video, I look forward to the next one!
Great overview Shannon of my home team. I still have lots of concerns around Billy G and his continued "grit first" over scoring goals method of building a team and still worry he hasn't given Kap enough support for him to want to stay. The new "5 yr plan that's 2 years in" announced this off-season is very concerning to keeping a guy like Kap who wants to win a cup now, not 3 years from now. I also worry Billy will give away a great player in Rossi who continues to be a Top 6 guy on pace for over 65 pts that doesn't get the respect he should... often the first to get moved down to a 3rd line role that isn't deserved. If Billy keeps Rossi, stops signing grinders and realizes it takes 3 scoring lines to win in todays NHL there is hope. As far as this year goes, it feels a little like fools gold. Gus has kept them in it with his great play but the team continues to struggle to score and the real contenders average 2.75 to north of 3 goals per game and this club doesn't have the scoring depth to do that. Time will tell.
I can see Marner THRIVING in Minnesota. The way the leafs have their team structured I think is the reason he is so streaky there, and also the fans disrespect him constantly because they only have eyes for Matthews.
Marner is way better than Matthews. Marner makes any player and every player look good. Matthews makes only himself look good. It's telling they're better without him than with him.
Guerin is super anal about the types of players he brings in and whether they’ll fit the culture. Supposedly one of the major reasons behind the Suter buyout.
My thoughts on the state of Minnesota? Pretty good state. The Wild won't win a round of playoffs this year, not because we're cursed, but because we're too inexperienced. Just getting there is all I'm asking for this year, and so far, we're in good shape. Next year is the year where I need to see us win a round.
Great analysis as always! The biggest difference in this team compared to 21 and 22 is the fact that John Hynes completely changed the mentality of the team.
They had to pare down because of the buyouts. Result, no horrible contracts. Have to develop, and draft because no cash for free agents. Set up to succeed, and next year they have money to spend.
I love when my teams (MN) are good, but I hate it too. Being a MN sports fan has really turned me into a pessimist. Better to have no hope and be surprised than watch my teams dominate just to choke in the first or second round
Haven't even watched the video yet. Kaprizov is going to leave, Brodin and Spurgeon will be perpetually injured, and none of the remaining prospects will pan out. There, that's my best attempt to counteract the jinx this video title surely put on the Wild. I'm actually pretty optimistic about the future of the club which is an unfamiliar feeling to have to deal with!
I disagree with the assessment of the Wild over the last 10 seasons. They’ve made 8/10 playoffs, been top 4 three times and have a top 10 points percentage over that time. They have been great in the regular season, but terrible in the playoffs.
wild also has prospects coming like ohgren and riley heidt and danilla yurov. Very excited for Yurov who is likely coming next season unless he signs another one year extension in the KHL.
you're not wrong. boldy, kaprizov, rossi, ohgren, khusnutdinov, heidt, yurov, stramel up front, faber, buium, jiricek, lambos, o'rourke, kiviharju on defense, gus and wallstedt in net. the future is bright. JEE still has plenty of time left, and middleton, maybe brodin. they've set themselves up well for sustained success. not all will pan out, but a lot will and some already have.
i understand the wild haven't had the playoff success and when we have really successful seasons where we start gaining expectations we let down. but most of those seasons were surprise seasons where players over performed. i dont think you could ever look at our lines and say yeah im taking that line over the best lines in hockey. so its slightly unfair to look at those teams and say yeah they were huge disappointments the wild choked like they always do. but now it feels like we have an actual core, and some depth. now kaprizov makes everything work so its a little sketchy to rely so heavily on him but with Gustavsson playing this well and the defensive depth we have i give us as good a chance as ever to show that this isnt the same as some of those other fluke seasons where players overperformed in the regular season. we have guys who can make an impact in the postseason
Asa a Wild fan I’ll believe it when we get out of the 1st round. It’s been a long road…when you think back to the first several years we came away with Gaborik and Koivu and honestly it’s fairly embarrassing to have one retired jersey and it’s Koivu’s who nobody can convince was anything more than a good, but not great NHL Center. He seemingly was a good Captain, but it didn’t matter…he didn’t have success on the ice. We drafted horribly the first several years and as fun as it was to watch Lemaire’s lunchbox crew have success it cost us a lot of draft capital when we needed to build a team. So we have crappy draft picks and we draft crappy…what do you do? You overpay for Parise and Suter and those contracts were legal at the time and the Wild (and others) got penalized for them. The Wild are just another example of you can’t build a Stanley Cup contender via Free Agency, it has to happen through the draft.
next year when the cap space appears, they are absolutely gonna have to be smart with it, and not pull a nashville and buy big on aging declining players and either spread it out or maybe go after an rfa.
Hartmans contract seemed like he's got it because of him being versatile and also as a little bit of a thank you for scoring 60+ and desperately centering the top line on 1.7 mil. Appearantly he doesn't like moving around so he would probably re-sign at a lower cap hit or similar if the cap keeps going up. Very useful 1/12 despite being an asshole.
Rantanen is another possible UFA for the Wild. The Avs probably can’t afford what he’s asking and the Wild might be one of the few teams that can shell out $14 million
As a 27 year old Minnesota native, this is the only hockey team I’ve ever rooted for, and I have for as long as I can remember. Lots of ups and downs, and this certainly isn’t the first time I’ve felt hopeful. But it’s the first time I can remember where ‘hopeful’ doesn’t mean “wow, they’re on a crazy unexpected hot streak maybe they’ll buck expectation and take the cup”. It actually feels like there’s a future, and that the team Guerin is building has the potential to produce for years to come. It’s an exciting time to be a Wild fan!
Trenin's not scoring, but he's still been good. Other than that I mostly agree with the takes. I still have some concerns, namely our inability to beat the great teams in the Central, consistent secondary scoring past Kaprizov and Boldy, and obviously the injury things. Still, first in the league right now somehow. I'm gonna just ignore the hammer over my head and enjoy this.
My bet is that Kaprizov will sign an 8-year extension at 15 or 15.5M per year. And when the cap hit clears, they can add about 3 free agent forwards. I know they are really pushing for Boeser, at least the fans.
For me just like with the Jets and Toronto I can’t buy into any of them until the make it in the playoffs. Regular season success is great and all but need to show where it counts
The Wild have been building this pipeline and relevancy for 2-3 years. Once the cap restrictions leave and the remaining plug in prospects are ready, they will be a bitch to play against for a 4-5 year span. Buium, Yulov, Jiricek, Wallstedt, Spacek, Kumpulainen, Height, Haight, Ohgren, Lambos, Peart, and it goes on and on. Even Stramel is showing signs of life. They have a ready prospect pool and a long term prospect list. Great days are here, this year unexpected but shows what is around the corner 💯…
First time in a LONG time I feel sustainable hope in this team. The biggest leap outside of player development is tackling our demons against Winnipeg, Colorado and Dallas.
And I think what’s most impressive is that they’re doing so with very limited cap space from the Suter and Parise buyouts
Don't forget st Louis

The Wild are just another example of you can’t build a Stanley Cup contender via Free Agency, it has to happen through the draft.
Videos like this scare me. Hopelessly optimistic.
next year when the cap space appears, they are absolutely gonna have to be smart with it, and not pull a nashville and buy big on aging declining players and either spread it out or maybe go after an rfa.
Wild NEED better depth goal scoring!
Do you think the wild should go for a Center?
Hartmans contract seemed like he's got it because of him being versatile and also as a little bit of a thank you for scoring 60+ and desperately centering the top line on 1.7 mil. Appearantly he doesn't like moving around so he would probably re-sign at a lower cap hit or similar if the cap keeps going up. Very useful 1/12 despite being an asshole.
Rantanen is another possible UFA for the Wild. The Avs probably can’t afford what he’s asking and the Wild might be one of the few teams that can shell out $14 million
Damn this guy must watch a lot of hockey content to know who the barrows beauties are that is like a minnesota centric show.
Yvonne approved video :-)
LETS GO WILD!!
Minnesota deserves the CUP!
And the next games they will lose cursed by this video 😅 well I am looking forward to this summer to see what happens 😊
For me just like with the Jets and Toronto I can’t buy into any of them until the make it in the playoffs. Regular season success is great and all but need to show where it counts
LGW! My favorite team in the west
Wild & Guerin would have the Cash to go hard on #96 Rantanen, IF he really wants to get paid?
The Wild have been building this pipeline and relevancy for 2-3 years. Once the cap restrictions leave and the remaining plug in prospects are ready, they will be a bitch to play against for a 4-5 year span. Buium, Yulov, Jiricek, Wallstedt, Spacek, Kumpulainen, Height, Haight, Ohgren, Lambos, Peart, and it goes on and on. Even Stramel is showing signs of life. They have a ready prospect pool and a long term prospect list. Great days are here, this year unexpected but shows what is around the corner 💯…
