@@LucasMueller18young and fast as in immature and fast. Immature in the sense of not understanding limitations of the car and not always being aware of his surroundings. Now that he's been in the sport for several years he's managed to "mature" out with experience, race wins and of course championships.
Don't forget that Danny did a testdrive in the RB19 at Silverstone and managed a lap time good enough for the front row of the race that weekend. In a car he has never driven before and does that, impressive.
Shame to exclude 2016. Because that was arguably Danny Ric's strongest season. If Mercedes wasn't so extremely OP back then he could have mixed it up in the title fight

Danny Ric would be a great fit for Red Bull (if he finds his old form) He left Red Bull and made his money. Now he would return knowing he is 2nd. But he could add wins to his legacy which is more important now.

As a Ricciardo fan it is not easy to say this but I think Max has improved considerably since 2018 and best case for Daniel is he could get back to the same level he was at. I think he would do ok up against Max now but it would be more like Webber and Vettel where the 'number 2' could beat the younger guy on occasion but not consistently.

Nah he couldn't touch Max now. Edited to note I also love Danny Ric but its an age thing when he was better Max was young and physically underdeveloped. Now Ric is over the hill and Max is really strong not a rookie.
On the other hand, if Ricciardo could regain his seat at RB he would drive a dominant car (as opposed to 2017 and 2018) and with the performance of Checo this year he wouldn't have big shoes to fill.
Let's not forget that the chemistry between Max and Daniel was arguably better than any of them have experienced eversince.
I can't wait till Danny is back in that RB and proves all these takes wrong.. He is completely dominating that AT right now - he still has it and can challenge and beat Max for a WC..

Like Lando against Sainz. You could see their ceiling was much higher, but at that moment their teammate's experience made the difference to get results with more consistency.
Sainz is still miles better than Lando. People who think otherwise are smoking something good man.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the 'experienced' Ricciardo vs the young talented Verstappen back in 2017/2018. After Monaco 2018, Max's approach shifted. He has matured and I don't think Ricciardo or any driver can match up to him except maybe Alonso or Hamilton. Danny chose Renault/McLaren and went for the big bucks and he seems to be enjoying life outside of F1. He might perform better than Perez but he'll have to accept that Max can't be beaten.

2016 may have been an 'acclimatisation' year for Max but he still got 17 races in the RB12; that's still a lot of races.
2017 and 18 were tight but for me Verstappen had the better of it both years in terms of speed, even if 1) his inexperience held him back and 2) it was all skewed due to him getting the brunt of Red Bull's DNFs in 2017 and Ricciardo getting the brunt in '18.
They were close in qualifying pace, but in race pace Verstappen was clearly ahead with very few exceptions (Baku 2018 for example).
In 2017 he had a lot of retirements while being in front of Daniel, on the other hand Daniel had most of his retirements while being behind Max. Also for example in Monaco 2017 Daniel was given the better strategy despite being behind on track. I think after his bad start in 2018, from Montréal and onwards he was on an another level. Lets don't forget he was 19 in 2017 and 20 in 2018.
Agreed this is generally forgotten that when there were DNFs Max was most of time ahead of Daniel. For me that's the only reason people can even debate whether Ricciardo was better than Verstappen. If there weren't that many reliability issues for both of them, it would be difficult to argue Daniel was better in 2017 or 2018.
They weren‘t close in quali pace either. Max was ~ 2 tenths faster on average in 2017 and 2.5 in 2018. That‘s a bigger gap than Hamilton had to Bottas between 17-21 in quali.
Not saying Ricciardo was faster but you have to take into account the fact Ricciardo only retired behind Max the majority of the time because he had to take a stupid amount of grid penalties due to using too many engine parts because they kept blowing up on him. Not only that but the engine reliability was not only during the race. Happened 3 or 4 times in qualy too.
@@jarrodparker760 Verstappen also had similar problems, also had some retirements that wasn't his fault but misjudgment of other drivers. Of course, he also took out Ricciardo in Hungary.
Max spent 70% of the laps in front of Daniel during.
He was good, don’t get me wrong. But I think it was more a case of Max’s inexperience against Daniel’s experience.
2017, yes, Daniel was better but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter as we all know who was/is truly the better driver.
Max in 2017, outqualified him in his first full year at Red Bull and in 2018 Max beat him in both quali/races.

@@justinm.1 Max has had the same amount of retirements in 2017, the difference is that Max was ahead most of the time when got a retirement and when Ricciardo got a retirement he was always behind Max in the race.
They were both equal but Daniels experience against Max's inexperience put him ahead but Daniels bad luck put him closer to Max in the standings then he should have been. So they were equal except late in 2018 were i think Max started to edge ahead. And the Baku crash and Honda uncertainty said to Daniel time to leave is now.

You're ignoring quali times etc. Max was already outqualifying Riciardo in 2017 and the average gap increased slowly. They were equal in race results indeed but the writing was on the wall I would say.

Max completely obliterated Ricc on every season they drove alongside each other.
And let's add 2016 as an adaptive season for the young fella, shall we (why not)? 😉
- After the end of his rookie season, some 18yrs old boy, changed teams at 2016 mid season, and without ever testing his new beast of a machine, he simply destroyed the all competition (after those two mercs muppets, ended each other's race, at the very 1st lap), ending with a symphonic win... with some insane skills, after battling against Kimi.
I'm not even mentioning, those mid season races (nor Interlagos... why should I? ;) )... with glimpses of sheer brilliancy, a few DNF's and "rookie" mistakes.
The last race of the 2016 season - The still young man... spun at those very 1st corners... and became last (at 22nd place, 4 seconds behind everyone)... while Ricc was already 4th, by the end of that same 1st lap: Max ended 19th... already 10sec behind Ricciardo and 0.3s behind Ericsson, although....1sec in front of Sainz. Basically, he drove 6s faster in just one lap, than the Spanish fella and, 10s faster than KMag, being the last to cross the finish line. A few laps later... 8 to be precise, the frontrunners started to pit for some fresh rubber boots and Max opted for a different strat... by the end of lap 9, he was already 2nd, 1.5s behind Lewis. Good battles happened during the race, which ended with with Nico becoming WC, and Max finishing 4th... just 1.65s behind, after being overtaken by Seb, wearing new boots. Ricc ended 5th.
Nothing that Ricc did till today, was even close to what Max has achieved in his 1st season, driving for the the Bulls.
- 1st win without even testing his new machine
- One of the most brilliant performances ever, from any driver, at any circuit... at Interlagos (wet race)
(being considered as "driver of the century", by the same legend, that brought Lewis to the Mercs)
- An insane race at Abu Dhabi, from last to 3rd, losing that place, for some fresh rubber boots, Ferrari... while on the very last laps. Ended in 4th place, 0.8s behind Vettel and 1.685s behind the Winner.

Guess this resumes, those 3 seasons.
I have almost half a century of F1 over my shoulders... and my reaction to what the still young man did, the minute he arrived the circus, was... "This kid will be the new Gilles, mixed with some Lauda, Prost, Senna and Schumacher, all together". The young man is an Alien (and... at the early age of 25)... a bit Like Messi/Maradona, Jordan, Federer, Pelphs, Bolt and a few others.
Keep up doing such an awesome work, @aldas. Even if I disagree with some of your opinions, you have my outmost respect.

Daniel's mentality should be shifted if he goes back to RB again for his 2nd stint. Back then, he went away because he didn't want to be a Max's dog and break his reputation as a future world champion.
Now, we know his reputation has been fading, he's no longer in the conversation of a future world champion driver, he's no longer a youngster who will have a lot of times in F1 in the future as he's already 36 in 2025. So, he can be more relax right now even if then he's gonna beaten by Max, at least just being closer to Max, and winning some of the races more than Checo, it will be enough to secure him in RB. He can enjoy there driving a car that suit to what he always requires, take a high wages as i'm sure RB will still pay him high, & of course now he knows himself that it will be impossible to be a world champion especially against peak Max alongside him. So, adding race wins on his pocket i think will make him happier. This mentality should he plant into Daniel's head.
And daniel and max prefer the same style.
Daniel's experience already known as a race winner against a super 18 y.o Max should be in the conversation why they were matching each other that times.
Daniel is an estabilished driver, he's a proven race winner, no doubt he's the third best driver in 2014-2018 behind Lewis & Seb but already we've seen something more special in Max, we saw Max already had that natural speed & killer drive on such a young age, even if he got beaten by Daniel in 16 & 17, we saw that how close Max to him in 2016 on average pace, in year we know probably it was Daniel's strongest season but he already that close after just joined the team prematurely, 18years old, & so raw.
Max in 2017 deserve to beat Daniel as he was already faster than Daniel, he also outqualified Daniel already in his first full season in RB, but of course he was still raw that times, his mistakes prone is not avoided yet.
In 2018, although Daniel had really unlucky, but let's not forget that most of the times he DNF, he was behind Max. So there will not change much the results, Max was already much quicker than him and that made him thinking to go out from RB as he seen that Max will be a superstar driver and will soonly take that sovereignty as a number 1.
lets also not forget that most of the DNF's he finished behind Max were because of grid penalties he had to take race after race because they kept having to change engine parts. Up until 2021 their pace and skill level was very very similar
@@jarrodparker760 nah be realistic, even 2020 Daniel will never match Max. He will be a lot closer than Albon did but he will never touch Max. Max has that natural killer things that Daniel doesn't have.

the thing that people need to remember that max in 2015 was just his 2nd year driving a CAR ...... any car , so vs ricciardo he was like 20 yo with just 4 years driving A car, i think no driver came to F1 with less experience than max
Daniel outside of Mclaren has always been incredibly competitive. I think he 100% deserves a seat given his past. Whether at redbull or another team.
He was bang average at HRT and Toro Rosso as far as i'm concerned, only showcased great one lap pace there but was sometimes out-drove by Jean Eric Vergne.
Only scored 30 points in 2 seasons there.
I put 2017 down to Max just having a bad year. Like Charles in 2021 and George in 2023.
Losing to their teammate doesn’t deny/disprove the incredible talent they are. You can’t expect them to be perfect all the time/not have an unlucky season every now and then.

Max and Danny are mature, almost 'cerebral' in their consideration of most things, especially driving and people. They behave like cousins and I'd love to see their bantering and laughter on the grid again. As far as I can see both have maintained their understanding and trust of the each and that's almost priceless in that competitive workplace. Max is much more mature than his years and Danny will always be young at heart. I hope that it happens if Redbull and 'the boys' want it, why not? Then watch some of their competitors lose their cool.......
I disagree with Aldas about Ricciardo's decision to leave. His last season with Red Bull in 2018 saw his car collapse in a heap and DNF'ed in 8 races in that season. I think that this would be enough to throw your hands in the air and say "I'm out". I still think it was an unwise decision, though. He should have stayed on and I believe we would have seen some great racing.
Daniel saw the shitshow that ws Mclaren Honda at that time also, and REALLY didnt believe in the RB Honda partnership. Ultimately he made the wrong call, but we all understand why.
But.. the reason his car kept DNF'ing was because of the Renault engine. And he left red bull for Renault.
So how does what you're saying make sense?
@@pantrofl RBR had to cram that engine in a much tighter area and I believe Renault built them a specific spec which never really worked for them. It did just fine in their own car so they always put the blame on RBR. (And after many heated exchanges they re branded the engine into 'Tag Heuer'
So Daniel felt pretty safe to go to a team where engines actually lasted.
Also keep in mind, the alternative for next year was that awful 'gp2 engine' in the mclaren.

Spot on about Ricciardo being a clutch performer. He always takes the win, if he has even a small chance. Look at Ricciardos Monza win. The guy is a winner and clutch performer. He has more wins than Noris, Leclerc, Russel and Sainz put together.
I think if Daniel gets the RB seat in 25 he could become the number driver which will set him and red bull up nicely for 2025 onwards into the new regs too

I think Max fans like me accept Ricciado is a better driver with three seasons of obvious dominance but Max has improved recently, so the gap is not as big as it used to be. Ricciardo is probably still a fair bit better and more likable but its not as big a gap as it used to be.
The gap is the same.
Ricciardo is a more pure F1 driver. In 2018 Daniel beat max in races both cars finished 158 to 144 points. Ricciardo beat Max in 2016, 2017, 2018, three seasons. There is simply no comparison if you consider F1 purity, race craft and love of the sport.

Danny is underrated - the support for Max with the better car in their final season together really impacted him. He is older and wiser now - wouldn't make the same mistake. He can beat max for a WC if he's back in the RB..
Max was faster in both 2017 and 2018.
In 2017 Max was faster in both race pace(0.210) and quali pace(0.151), Max outqualified Ricciardo with 13-7 and in the races were they both finished Max won 5-4. It was only due to bad luck and DNFs that Max didn't have more points that season.
In 2018 Max was faster in both race pace(0.220) and quali pace(0.215), Max outqualified Ricciardo with 15-5 and in the race were they both finished Max won 8-3.
Can you imagine if Daniel makes it back to Red Bull, and wins a championship against Max? Obviously not saying he would it's a huge longshot, but Daniels career would be a Hollywood movie for sure.
I wouldn't say it's impossible though. I don't think Max is much quicker than back in 2017-18, he's always been freaky fast and naturally gifted. He's just a more complete driver now with less errors. One thing is for sure though, people have forgotten how much of a beast Daniel was in the Red Bul. His driving style is tailor made for it. I think for sure he would do better than Perez.

Red Bull will NEVER allow Daniel to win a drivers championship over Max not in a billion years. If he makes it back to the senior team it will be all about scoring podiums and perhaps chalking up a few more race wins.
RBR and Renault level DR and Max would easily be the best driver pairing. We’ll see if Daniel get back close to his best. It’d at least give us some fun at the front. Horner also LOVES both these guys. They’re like his kids.
With how Max and Daniel have fun together, like the same setup and are basically family to RBR (even if Max was and will be treated like the golden child), it’d be so fun to see them together. While I like Checo, he and Max are just a very boring dynamic (I.E., you basically NEVER expect Checo to get the better of Max).
BTW, from 2014-2020, media didn’t consider Ricciardo possibly future WDC material, it was the almost 100% consensus that he was in the could win a WDC with the right car. After all, he wiped the floor with Seb and continued to excel afterward.

Max clearly was better than Danny boy. It was clear he had an advantage with raw speed. However it was pretty darn close. No one has run Max as close as Daniel did. If Daniel was firing on all cylinders as a team mate to Max, he was easily capable of beating him. The strongest driver pairing!!
At the time? Sure. But Hamilton and Bottas were still a long-running lineup for a reason.

As a Max fan that also loves Ricciardo (even more when he was in his prime in RB), I have to admit that they were very close, but at that time Max was in his very-early 20s and Daniel was in his absolute prime
Max truly is a prodigy. I think DR got into f1 at the worst time, because if you weren't driving a Mercedes then you had no chance of a WDC

I honestly think that Daniel has recalibrated his expectations with regard to his own career.
I think he understands that he probably won't beat that Red Bull is very much Max's team now and will remain that way.
But if Daniel can come in, perform consistently, beat Max from time-to-time and nail down second place in the driver's championship, he'll mark himself as among the very top echelon of drivers who, on his day, could beat a once-in-a-generation talent and dominant world champion.
I’d say Abu Dhabi 2020 is when Verstappen really hit his stride. Just bulletproof consistency alongside pace since then. 2019 was a big step up too though
Nah the car just became better after that, Max was at his peak from the second half of 2018. Barely made a mistake since than. Beating the faster Ferrari's in 2019 and occasionally splitting the rocketship Mercedes in 2020 and made that RedBull look faster than the arguably faster Racing Point (Merc clone). Also no teammate has really come close since that point, while all of them have proven to be good to very good F1 drivers after or before being Max's Teammate.
Dan is the man, perhaps the fact no other team racer has matched how good him and max were together has heald some hurt feeling at Dannys end, as long as Rebull show him respect this time - even though Max is now super human!

If Ricciardo decides to join Red Bull, that may mean having to resign himself to the idea that he will always be a #2 to Max unless he can wrestle the title away from his teammate. The tension from 2018 probably went down already maybe with the kind of time-out that Ricciardo had of not being Verstappen's teammate from 2019-2023 (so far) so it would probably play a lesser role now since all that is behind them. Only time tensions could go up again is if both end up in a title fight with one another.
I think Daniel already knows this. At the end of his stint with Redbull he knew the team was biased towards Max, and now that Max has shown and stepped up to his talent I'm sure it has cemented into Riccardo's mind that Max is the 1. driver.
Max was better imo, but Riccardo did have a lot of bad luck with reliability. You have to remember Dan was in his prime whereas it was still early days for Max. Red bull had the best line up of the grid with those two imo

Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016 was a better combo (19 wins). Hamilton and Bottas in 2017/2018 (12 wins in 2017, 11 wins in 2018), as well as Vettel/Raikkonen in 2017-2018 (11 combined wins; not even with the best car). All 3 were better lineups.
Like everybody else I too was really shock how Danny was at McLaren. I just couldn't understand. Danny was always a top driver so it felt really weird seeing him like that

I’ve always viewed Ricciardo as a fast but car sensitive driver. Whereas Max can just get the most out of anything. Would be good to see them both in the perfect machine for each of them.
The watershed moment for Max was Monaco, 2018. After yet another crash and finally even some well deserved criticism from Horner and Marko, apparently Max's dad Jos gave Max some very valuable advice... Don't be at 100% all the time. Bet at 99% and you're still faster than anybody else.
From then on he practically stopped making errors and absolutely dominated his team mate. Yes, Ricciardo was very unlucky with DNF's that year, but Verstappen basically outqualified Ricciardo at every track and could always be found in front of the Australian at every race, independent if any of the two drivers suffered a DNF.
Exactly. People forget his 2017 season as well. Max may have been beaten in the standings but he got more wins than Ricciardo, and had far more mechanical failures. In most of those races he was leading Riccardo before he retired.

I think Ricciardo would be a great fit to RB. He's a PR goldmine, and if he finds his RB pace again, a serious contender for race wins!
Max and Ric were pushing one another to new limits. If they´ve stuck together they both would have grown to new heights.

No way, without watching the video I can tell you Max has worked hard enough to be at the level he is now. I really don't like that kid but I have to admit he is one of the greatest of all time. That alone is achieved by consistency and super hard work, also a little bit of luck and support from the team but it does not take anything from Max talent and results

You say 2019, I say after Monaco 2018 was the moment Max changed from a young impatient talented rookie making unforced errors into the relentless consistent dominant champion driver he is now.. Daniel felt that as well and knew he was losing the team to Max.. Apart from DNF's Max never lost a race to Daniel anymore since.. Because of that I was not that surprised Daniel left Red Bull, but I was suprised it was to Renault.. The manufactor of the engines that were the main cause of all the reliability issues Red Bull had in those days, besides the lack of performance.. I guess it was Daniel only viable option to leave at the time.. And look at him now, 4 years and 2 teams later, in Alfa Tauri trying to get back into Red Bull again.. How times can change..
He was better than Max bcoz of the experience and Ricciardo was also just sensational driver who just steals races just like that.
2018 would have been an Iconic Season 🏆. If it was a 3 Way Battle for The Championship Between ( VETTEL 🇩🇪 5, HAMILTON 🇬🇧 44, and RICCIARDO 🇦🇺 3)!!!!
I think everyone wants to see this pairing again. Dan in his prime was equal to a young Verstappen but i think we can all agree that Max's ceiling was way higher. His improvements year after year scared Ric for sure. I think if DR came back he would have to fight to regain his form of old whereas Max has reached the level that we have seen from F1 royalty like Schumacher, Senna.
I think its more a question of what could have been, unfortunately in the case of Ricciardo.
Max came into red bull being extremely young, keep in mind when (normal) drivers where coming in f1 they were 20-22. He was 17, and 18 when he came into red bull.
Verstappen generally was quicker than Ricciardo but ricciardo was more experienced and more consistant than max. Any post 2017 max (19 year old) would beat Ricciardo in a fair 1 vs 1
Riccardo let his ego get the best of him but at least he made a few millions at the expense of more possible race wins and podiums

The old Ricardo during red bull time is over. This new ricardo is slower and less committed. McLaren really changed him.
Max had a shocker in the first 6 incident filled races of 2018, after that he calmed down and became the superior driver to Daniel.
I like Ricciardo and really respect his prime, but even in this season (2024), Tsunoda seems to be outperforming him. Now, Im sure going to Red Bull will give him a faster car and boost his confidence, resulting in better performance, but I am reluctant to see him on the same level as Checo. Because Max is so dominant, I think we become unfair to Checo who still bags podiums, although not regularly.
Whether prime Ric was ever better for a longer spell than young Max is up for debate. But I think most would agree that even with Ric being a very good driver, he does not belong in that upper echelon of drivers like Schumi. Ham, Senna, Prost. Max in my opinion does. If he comes back and could approach his form of years past he would do a bit better than Perez, but I don't think he would be able to really push Max consistently at all. But he would be grateful to drive in a competitive car and scoring podiums and an occasional win. And RB has a consistent number two who is content with being number two.
I have no doubts that if Ricciardo comes back to RB he will be destroyed by Verstappen

I think on his day Ricciardo would equal Verstappen but I don't think he's better. I do not count qualifying as it's a different requirement, it's a one-lap throw-everything-at-it situation. In a full race situation, implementing tactics of fuel and tyre saving while still putting in competitive times is a different kettle of fish. I think Ricciardo showed his maturity and ability to deliver.
How did Ricciardo "clearly not click with the environment" at McLaren? All parties have said that the failure was purely down to the handling characteristics that Danny couldn't work around. Everything else was fine.
It was down to Mclaren micromanagement of Ricciardo's issues with the car. They should've just let him figure the car out by himself.
In short, the McLaren solution to the incompatibility between Daniel and the car was to adjust Daniels driving style, rather than rectifying the car’s inherent flaws, which by all understanding, we’re a core design issue and not easily remedied. Daniel has always preferred a pointy car that tends to oversteer on corner entry and the Macca was basically a tyre scrubber by comparison. This preference is very similar to that enjoyed by Max. Funnily enough, Checo prefers the particular under steering car characteristic of the 2021 Macca. Looking at the current RB, it appears to be in Daniels sweet spot, hence why he was able to turn it on in the mid year tyre test.

I know he's had his struggles but at that moment in time, there was no case to say Max was the more gifted driver.
Yeah Max was looking like an incredible talent, especially for his age but so was Riccardo, he was a proven racer winner, he had legit taken on Seb and beaten him, a 4 time world champion, for many it was a case of when not if Danny Ric would become a World Champion.
Of course, history hasnt gone his way, with moves to slower teams proving his downfall, especially at McLaren, as it was only at McLaren did he truly struggle, the guy was clearly the better driver at Renault, meanwhile Max stuck at Red Bull and that team bounced back and he has become champion but its easy to say what you should have done in hindsight but nobody knows which team is going to produce a title contender, especially going into a major rule change.
Max had shorter corners already, he was the better driver.
And why would Red Bull even want Ricciardo in that seat? The job of their #2 driver is anything but pushing Verstappen, let alone compete against him. This is not how you secure/maintain dominance. Look at Mercedes, Lauda and Wolff would have never put up with another season like 2016, hence Rosberg's "shock retirement" was all but inevitable.
As for Red Bull, no driver has ever made it back into the team, once you're out, you're out. And when Red Bull was shifting away from two drivers competing against each other to the "wingman" strategy, this had big implications for TR/AT and their junior driver program... and for now, there is absolutely no reason for RB to put some young aspiring hot shot into the second seat. This has to be an experienced driver, willing to accept his role as #2 driver... not someone looking to "upset the apple cart".
2024 DR3 will be back in that redbull seat. you heard it hear first...
I believe if DR came back he would beat Max occasionally on pace and would give that competition that they crave.
To my mind, when MV first got to RB he was already super fast and I think DR really did "step up a gear" because of the threat MV posed. Did he step up enough to really challenge MV over subsequent seasons given that MV has gained experience and maturity so has only got better? I suspect not. If DR was driving at his peak I think he would definitely be quicker than Perez, but MV is now the class-of-the-field by a good margin - it's hard to see an area you could call a weakness (and I am no fan of MV). Hamilton is perhaps his only genuine rival as long as the Mercedes is good enough. Sadly, Red Bull's (i.e. Marko's) appalling handling of the 2018 contretemps, which I thought then and think now was definitely MV's fault for weaving, took a toll on DR and led him to some decisions that just didn't work for him.

The Problem was with McLaren is that they didn’t adjust to both Drivers well enough and just blamed the Car if you get that experience at a Team are they really only relying on one driver Alpines Driver Pairings have been pretty even threw the years given a Car that they can be really close in points Realiabilly hasn’t been the best but the Midfield Mechinces can make one of the 2 Drivers Shine a chance at a Race Winning Seat.
I don't believe people can always just say that Max was so inexperienced and young compared to now and Max would crush Ricciardo. Look at the response from Horner when he realised the times Ricciardo was setting in a completely unknown car to him (he had never driven the car before this and set a time Horner said would be on the front row) in testing 2023.
The fact is and always will be with F1 that you have to be in the right car at the right time. Ricciardo's Red Bull years were plagued with unreliability even though he managed to scramble for wins. The car only started winning in 2021, he would have had to wait another 3 years (8 years of racing from joining in 2014) to get anywhere near a championship and even then the tides were against him with Red Bull backing Max. No wonder he left. No F1 driver waits that long. Max is fast but no faster now, just way more consistent and even tempered and the best car on the grid hands down. I hope they give Ricciardo a seat there to see what he can do. Checo has had too long to catch up.

Ricciardo had to prove himself in that alpha tauri, otherwise it makes no sense to give him another chance. The chance should always be given to the guy in best form and with the highest potential.
Best case is he'd probably do better than Checo but not that much better, worst case he'd probably be about the same as Checo. Danny now, even assuming he gets back to something like his red bull days, is not as good as Max but is he better than Checo, probably and he's been happy slapped into knowing that being the red bull Bottas is the best he can hope for now. Unless he really is washed up, he'll be in the red bull next season at the first sign of "uh oh here comes the perez mid season drop off"

These are the stats i could find of the total time Verstappen and Ricciardo were teammates. I´ve excluded DNF´s because both of them had a lot of DNF´s in 2017 and 2018. In the races they both finished Verstappen 32 and Ricciardo 24 times ahead. Verstappen got 22 podiums and Ricciardo 19. And Verstappen got 5 race wins against Ricciardo´s 4. I couldn´t find the qualifying results but i believe Ricciardo beat Verstappen there. But in these stats you could already see that even as a teenager Verstappen´s peaks were higher he just needed more experience and consistency.
stats are slightly skewed for race pace and podums/wins. In 2018, especially in the back half of the season, Ricciardo had to take alot of grid penalties for engine changes which meant he'd start close to the back of the grid quite often so ofc Max was taking those races. Your point still stands tho

Actually Max outqualified Ric in 2017 13-7, and 15-5 in 2018. Agree with the overall assessment though.

I think Riccardo is more of a Button, Hill, or Rosberg. WDC capable in the right machinery but not absolutely dominant like lewis, max, or vettel.
Max may have been quicker but he also got into stupid incidents and mistakes, Daniel was far more sensible and reliable. Now max is the ultimate racing driver, I don't think Daniel will get close to him
This isnt exactly an accurate comparison, 20 year old "not matured in to his talent fully yet" Max is very different than 3-Time World Champion robot Max, id like to see how prime Ricciardo could stack up now, because Max is a different beast now
You have to take into account that Redbull have built their cars to suit verstappen driving style. All the other teams have compromised between their 2 drivers.
I still think Daniel did the right thing leaving Red Bull. The only reason he’s back there is because it was his only option to stay in Formula 1. I lost all the respect I had for him when it was announced he’s returning to the team he left at the end of 2019.
I do not believe he can replicate the level of performance people may remember. The team won’t allow anyone to challenge Max. No matter how he or anyone else performs, they’ll never have equal treatment as long as the current team management is in place.
I think is the same reason he left, he saw that team was going to be Max Verstappen team, and that must have hurt to him (he was there before)
so he left to renault who were always selling air and then to mclaren, a team that was coming back to the top but it got stuck again. So they were not bad projects to be in when he was. His time at mclaren is a big question of what happened cause the team was supportive to him, so really weird it didn't work and obviously it puts into question wether or not he can get back into form. Him returning to Alpha tauri just show the bad state the Red bull academy is being managed at the moment, and how difficult time drivers have at Red bull, besides MAx obviously. Marko it's always ready to pull the plug on any of them, if checo had come from the redbull academy and not having more of a conventional contract in f1, he would be already be sacked, and the second driver of redbull would have changed 2 or 3 other times since 2020

The Baku incident did not help & Christian handled that whole saga very very poorly.
The other contributing factor was DR ex manager Glenn Beavis (which he sued for non-performance & poor advice). The dude was a complete snake .
Daniel could have done so much better by staying with Red Bull Honda.
Daniel would have spoken to other senior drivers on the grid, who all would have reminded him about the Gp2 engine at McLaren and Fernando
Realistically Daniel also should have stayed a third year at Renault, he would have been better off…he dragged that pos up the grid to 2 podiums and would have more money off the euro market

Dont think money was all he was going for. Max was clearly taking over Red Bull meaning he'd likely win the WDC even if they had the car. He took a bet on some midfield teams making their way forward as the main driver and it just didnt work
Red Bull are not a charity. Keeping Max and giving him the right tools is what matters. He will do the winning with today’s reliability. They will not want a really fast guy in the other car. Good enough for good points is all that is required. Checo fits the bill and so would Daniel and others. Cheap wouldn’t go amiss either. The second seat at RB ain’t that great.
