Detailed that plane for the better part of 10 years. The pilot was familiar with the aircraft, having owned it for many years, and this was his home airport. Sorry for the loss of your buddy. Can't imagine the gut wrenching feeling the guy must have went through in those last moments. Only comforting part is he didn't suffer any, other than the mental anguish of what was about to happen. We humans put a lot of faith in mechanical devices. He probably tried to recover it harder than anything else in his life but a mechanical fault made it impossible. I hope if I'm ever involved in any aircraft related disaster, I have the time and mental stability to make contact with my family to let them know I love them more than anything else in this world. This case, I assume he didn't unfortunately.

You would be surprised at the fire you can put out with a single extinguisher.
For example, there was a 10' x 10' pit with fuel in it. It was lit on fire and once fully engulfed, we had to put it out with a single extinguisher. Every student had to do that.

The ‘popping’ sound witness’ reported hearing after takeoff is normally some problem with the engine. If it runs out of fuel, taking off on the wrong tank, it just loses power smoothly. Whatever the problem we are taught to plan for an engine out & the guy needed to fly the airplane to the crash. In 40 years of flying - if you put it down, under control, you usually will survive. When you let it stall, you’re no longer in control, gravity is.

I learned how to fly on both 16L and 16R. Just past the end of either runway, there's nothing but dense population, houses and buildings. My instructor told me countless times (30 years later I can hear him saying right now) that if you lose power - immediately check airspeed and point the nose DOWN as needed to prevent a stall, and if you're under 1000 feet, pick a place to crash that is straight ahead or nearly straight ahead of you, do NOT turn back to the runway, then fly the plane to your intended crash site - do not waver.
All counter-intuitive when it happens to a pilot, but it offers the best chance of survival.

Popping sound could be all kinds of things, like a buckling wing skin, midair impact, stuck flap suddenly freeing, etc. Without a recording, it's tough to say from a subjective witness statement. From the combustion chamber inspections, it sounds like the engine was operating normally. If it was a control issue, any continuity after that impact will never be found, short of a missing control surface. It doesn't sounds like this one will be conclusively resolved based on the information so far. That being said, the advice to keep your nose down is absolutely vital to every airman. IMO, every pilot should have 10 hours in gliders before licensing.

I have to believe that at least one of those people who tried with fire extinguishers knew that it needs to hit the base of the flames, but maybe they just couldn't get close enough and all they could do was try to rain it down on the wreckage from a distance. This shows how plain water has an advantage. You can stand at a distance and arc the stream onto the fire and still get results, while the powdered dry chemical or gas fire extinguishers will just blow away in the wind with no effect on the fire at all.

Every other person made attempts or showed that they wanted to do something, anything mean while he casually strolled to his van, got in and moved it away, then afterwards casually walked back to his work place looking at the wreckage fanning the smoke away with his hand like it was annoying smoke from a camp fire. If you have ever been close to a car fire you would get all other gas tanks away from one as fast as you can. They are soooo hot, and the gas in the nearby cars would boil and then their vapors would ignite too. Maybe not the nicest visual but a sound decision. Why all the other cars were not getting moved away is the real question I have. If they had lit off the entire block would have been destroyed. Move the other fuel sources and deploy the extinguishers, both should be at the top of your mind in situations like this.

I remember the exact day I pulled a guy from a burning car on HWY 101 North of Petaluma in May 16,1988. How do I know the exact date all these years later? Well I proised my now Ex-wife I would take off work early from my Job in San Francisco remodelling a auto dealer(Ron Greenspan Volkswagon) and was the forman so it wasnt easy to get the time off. None the less as I was going home to Healdsburg I saw a puff of smoke off the right side of the freeway and 2 or 3 cars lined up on the shoulder so I slid in to see if I could help even though I was already late for my sons B-day party. As I came upon the scence I saw a group of 6-7 men standing at the top of an incline that dropped 20 feet into a Vee-ditch and a chain link fence with a car on its top smoking and fire coming from under the front end. I couldnt believe nobody had gone down to help and were just standing at the top watching. The young guy was trapped and couldnt release his seatbelt and was screaming help me so as soon as I heard that I bolted down the hill sliding on my butt(steep hill with iceplant) and felt this tremendous blast of heat! It took away your ability to breathe but hearing the screams from that poor guy and seeing that nobody was going to help I said a quick prayer and fished my pocket knife out and reached through his window and cut his seatbelt in one stroke. I know the Holy Spirit was with me because I couldnt have done that as surely again in a thousand years with that much pressure. That was all he kneeded to roll out into my lap and I dragged him sideways enough to get out of the flames but we were still about ready to combust from heat, SOOO HOTTT. For some reason he couldnt walk so I picked him up and fireman carried him up that hill away from the flames just as it went up in a woosh! I have never been so discusted in my fellow man and yet elated in my Holy God for giving me the strength to save this mans life. as we got to the top the firemen arrived and I told him i had to get home before my wife skinned me. I gave him my number, a hug and prmise to meet his parents and my wife did indeed get pissed, didnt buy my story until his parents came to my house that night in tears offering me a fortune for helping when nobody else would. I said thanks but no thanks as I was led by the Spirit of God and was just happy to know he would survive and prosper. They were amazed and persistant and very wonderful people and I made a friend that day so you never know how you will react in a pinch but it feels good to know you wont fold up There is a saying I love it goes like this: Some people fold when squeezed, some tend to focus which person are you?

I was very impressed at the lady who brought the fire extinguisher out whether it works or not on diesel fuel - and she was the first one to pull the pin and try and put the fire out while the other two guys are kind of like waiting around like it’s too late they didn’t even try until the lady did it first.
May the pilot and the passenger RIP.
    So sad.
Some of the comments are coming from people who obviously know more than the average American does regarding this kind of situation don’t go getting all critical on where and how and what and why to try and help get the flames out I’m sure this lady and those two men had no clue as to what to do at least the lady had the balls to at least do something right or wrong she did something so let’s not be so critical on the average citizen when everyone else seems to be the experts.

Why are you trying to turn this into yet another GiRl PoWeR thing? Also, where did you get "diesel" from? Does this particular aircraft really run on diesel fuel? Also, fire extinguishers show pictorially that you need to aim them at the base of the flame. You don't even have to read instructions. You just need to have had enough curiosity ahead of time to have glanced at one in order to know this.

I am a long retired NTSB crash investigator. I have slowed this film down to 100 frames per second and captured everything from the initial impact which was incredibly straight nose in, very difficult to find a plane Making contact with terrain at that angle but anything is possible. both of the pilots were thrown free of the plane still strapped into their seats looking at the plane at 12 o'clock looking straight at the plane the pilot in command landed approximately 11 o'clock where you see a white object. That is his seat I was also able to differentiate the gentleman's head. The copilot or second in command was also still attached to his seat and that was approximately 330 to the right of the wing. there was a large white colored metal object that flew into the bed of the pick up. In the business of investigating hi velocity air crash you are liable to find anything anywhere! it's all physics on steroids. I have heard of a body missing from the passenger count on a twin engine plane and sometime later finding it on the roof of a house or in a tree. Video like this is critical to investigators seeking the truth because once the fire department arrives at a crash like this ....., it's all over! Fire has consumed everything it can. I applaud the office workers and bystanders who jumped right into action with their ABC fire extinguishers 🧯 while the two security guards stood around picking their asses! Especially the one lady who started from the aft and was clearly having breathing distress , but fighting the hell out of that fire with her fire extinguisher! Video cameras are something we didn't have in the old days, now there is no denying when you have a video of the event in question. There will be many other videos of this tragic accident taken from different locations and interviews with pilots that might have seen the trouble these aviators got into and the path the aircraft took before it crashed. The NTSB will have certified pilots of this particular model on the investigating team as well as a host of other professionals familiar with it handling characteristics and also it's logbooks from the day it was delivered, in some instances I have heard of the mechanics them self being audited. As far as the question of the gentleman already being deceased before the plane hit the ground let me just talk from personal experience. In 1989 I went up with a friend to pick up an aircraft he purchased in Denver, and fly it back to Van Nuys California, not as a pilot but just to get out of the house more or less. About 30 minutes outside of Denver we lost both engines, The only logical reason we could think of was the fuel supply was blocked because we all checked the fuel level by checking the gauge inside the tank just like we do when we fly, you-never believe gages on an aircraft if you can do a visual. The guide ratio on this particular aircraft was like that of a brick. doing everything in the cockpit to get that fuel flowing again the pilot called in a mayday and approximate location where we expected to go in so they could send the equipment. My mind went numb when I say numb I mean gray numb! When I've heard that expression used in the past I've never connected but now I was losing my ability to reason and seem to zone out! no fear no panic no
emotion I guess that is such an overload of adrenaline being dumped into your system. I went to the back of the plane and buckled down as tight as I could. the pilot yelled something and I presumed that he meant
Impact. That's it! I came too in the hospital looking like Louis Armstrong (and I'm not black! ) No memory of the impact or the rescue or the surgery except when I gained further conscience and this tsunami pain introduced itself to me. I will not try to convince you of anything I just do believe you get to that point when you know it's all over that your body shoots a chemical through you that prevents a freak out and deliver you to a peaceful place of resolution. I am almost blind now but I do well with magnifying glasses so I am talking into a voice transcriber, please excuse the typos and sloppiness sometimes the computer doesn't understand what I'm trying to say but I hope you understand. One reason that there will be an incredibly detailed investigation covering ......everything! is the amount of paper generated from law firms! Suing the manufacturer regardless of how old the plane was ,The flight school, the taxi that brought the pilot to the airport, The shoeshine boy , the waitress who poured his coffee, godspeed to all involved I have been through this so many times and it never gets easy. It seems like it's always outstanding families that are touched by these aircraft accidents! For every accident , there is an investigation that is designed to prevent yet another accident! and Michael we are the most ridiculous double vitality afternoon delight investigated where two neighbors who took there Baron on a golfing holiday to Las Vegas. At the airport they got into a verbal over who would fly the second leg to get home. The ramp agent at the FBO went inside to call the Las Vegas metro police but by the time the police arrived the plane was gone. Audio tapes from the cockpit and ATC showed both pilots were drunk and fighting for controls. Wreckage was found at the base of the Grand Canyon.

Unfortunately, sir, the NTSB isn't the same today as during your tenure. It's just like any other government agency these days. Narcissists for leaders, who promote yes men or based on woke quotas for races, or sexual preferences, and rarely on background and training. Often there are 2 investigators sent to run this investigation, and many times neither is even a pilot. As a matter of fact, they tried to push that policy for a while (to have other professions investigate unfamiliar professions, as someone thought that would be a good idea), and you can check Dan gryders channel on RUclips here and hear him vent about the overwhelming amount of aviation mishaps that the NTSB fails to produce any safety information or even causes...
When the government started in the business of race, or gender, or religious hiring requirements, it set this country back 100's of years. Government contracts are now awarded to a business not based on how they meet the requirements for a project, but by emphasizing the "importance" of the race and gender of the companies owner. Ever wonder why a bridge, road, or other routine infrastructure replacement job costs 10's of millions of dollars more than it would if it were a private business accepting bids for projects? It's because we think there's an armada of highly skilled and well trained professionals working for our government agencies, but that is absolutely not the case. Not at the leadership levels, at least. Which is where it matters most.
The CIA, NSA, and all of military intelligence didn't realize that the instant we were thinking g of leaving Afghanistan that our puppet leader and people we "trained" would hive up like pussies and take any money they could and run? The other 3 letter agency that is currently scarier than all others, sat quiet watching nearly 200 days of riots occur in 2020 while allowing a former cabinet member from the previous administration, who they feigned investigating in any actual sense of the manner, whom worked in the executive branch, get away with the use of a personal email server to transmit classified material for years. Thats like just casually sending classified information via TV commercials, as any intelligence agency in the world xan and would intercept them, as proven via the podesta email hack... Then when they subpoena this person and their staff for this server, UMA Abedin, wife of democratic pervert anthony weiner, knowingly and intentionally uses a 3rd party software to permanently destroy all the information ever kept on those servers before the agents could acquire said email servers... to put that in perspective, over the last 40 years, anykne convicted of transmitting, selling, stealing or misappropriating classified material, whether or not it was delivered to an adversary, has received an average of 36 years in federal prison. Many received life sentences. If I were to do that with one piece of material that was other than unclassified, at a minimum my security clearance would be gone and I'd be on a course for dismissal. More than once? That's treasonous. With or without intent, as Jim comey claimed was his basis for not charging that dog faced criminal cunt.
The once prominent institutions you, and I, were so fond of, are infested with generations of useless, corrupt people with no moral compass, nor dedication to this country. Ntsb included

It's dirty blind luck, because obviously the plane stalled and the flight control surfaces had zero authority. It just landed at the perfect pitch to accordion itself into a tiny, neat little footprint. Obviously unsurvivable for those onboard, but a GA plane full of aviation fuel miraculously crashed in a narrow alley parking lot without destroying any parked vehicles. A tempest in a teapot.
