Basically to become pilot or captain on such ships u need enormous experience so this situations are so far from an experienced captain or pilot. Most of the time it is related to the engine dept because on some big contaienr ships the steer isn’t used for weeks and sometimes a failure occures. It happens but it is quite rare and as hartmut wrote, this is not a very responsive ship so the collision is not out of options
