I'm disappointed the "What If?" Mode didn't become a staple for Marvel games. That was such a great secret to add replayability and encouraged you to reexplore. I wish we lived in an a multiverse if you will where Neversoft or Vicarious somehow made a 3rd or 4th for PS1.

    • @jamesprumos7775

Apparently the Spider-Man movie game was originally supposed to be the third entry in the Neversoft/Vicarious series, but the movie was going to come out around the same time so they decided to add the movie story to the beginning and end of the game they already made to make it line up with the movie.

    • @raresmacovei8382

No thank you for Vicarious. They were probably given a tight deadline and not as good of a budget and it's probably Activion's fault and not Vicarious, but Spider-Man 2 is a huge downgrade almost across the board (except PS1 Spider-Man textures) vs SM 2000.

@Flandrew There was also another version (kind of). There was a promotional demo on PC for the first Rami Spider-Man movie in collaboration with Kellogg. The demo had the character model swapped with one that looked like the movie and the billboards had been replaced with things like ‘Got milk’ and other things related to cereal. You could only play up to the Rhino fight as far as I’m aware and it also contained promotional content for the movie as well. I think it was only available in America. Look it up, it’s one of the strangest promos I’ve heard of.

I've remembered Got Milk for decades and now I think it's from that.

Had it for Dreamcast, loved this game. One small detail I really loved was how Spider-Man's portrait in his health bar icon would match whatever outfit he was wearing. If he was wearing the symbiote suit, then the portrait would change to the symbiote to match it.

After years of playing the PC version (practically my whole life), it took me so long to realize that in order to fix most of the game's issues, you have to cap it at 30fps. This can especially help beat different levels, like the crash that happens at the beginning of the Scorpion boss fight, and the moment where Spider-Man swings off the falling crane during the helicopter chase

I really hate when people judge a game's quality based on factors that are SOLELY due to how old it is. What with limited hardware and graphics and such. It's a lot more fair to judge universal things like the style of gameplay, the story, any unique mechanics, etc. I only bring it up because games like this get a lot of bad rep based on the limitations of the era.

I, the resident NYer in the comment section, return to once again share my knowledge that yes: our sewer systems are in fact full of never ending chasms. If they weren't the Turtles would be caught right away, and the blue alligators would run rampant on the streets.
Awesome to see you cover my absolute favorite spiderman game! I have not played many of the modern takes or spiderman 2 for the playstation, but I have largely heard most people hate this take on the wall crawler. I could never see why. Yes, the camera was awkward but the attention to detail when it came to spiderman as a character in the gameplay/story telling/characters/collectables always made up for that for me. The combat was fun, the collectables taught me so much history on this character I loved due to the show/SNES games I owned, and it made me appreciate the few comics I had enough to finally actually start following them as a kid. I fully credit this game as the reason I became a huge spiderman fan. I did have the N64 version, so I never knew what I was missing with the cutscenes. That was surprising to see. To me, the comic panels fit in so seamlessly I never batted an eye.
Ultimately, I wish modern takes on spidey had half as many historical suits as this game...that's what really made it for me. The what if mode and characters you see in the comics much more than most of the other spiderman media really helped it feel like you were getting a true comic marvel experience. I hope to rebuy the game someday so I can enjoy it again (sadly it was my brother's game).

Had the N64 version back in the day. The black-suit Spidey costume was my favorite, even though it looked more blue than black (as did Venom and Black Cat). Back then I thought the game was a continuation of the 90s Spidey cartoon show, rather than its own continuity. Didn't help that Black Cat and Doc Ock had the same voice actors, while Rino Romano did sound somewhat like Christopher Daniel Barnes as Spidey to me. Anyway, still a great game indeed.

This game will always hold a special place in my heart.
It was my probably my very first introduction to spiderman followed by the Raimi movies.
I'd go to a cyber cafe to play it all the time as a kid. And I had a demo that I played the heck out of when I got a pc
Still the 2nd best spiderman game of all time imo.
It's paced perfectly. All the levels and boss fights feel different.
And along with all the combos, it has really high replay value.
I must've completed it atleast a dozen times, and I just completed it again a few days ago on my phone with a dreamcast emulator.
Has all the iconic spiderman characters and suits.
Venom is funny as hell in this game.
Hearing Stan Lee's narration always brings a smile to my face.
And daredevil, human torch and Cap showing up briefly were cool moments.
It honestly felt like it could fit in the continuity of the 616 comics rather than being a completely separate thing.
The game has aged beautifully which is not something I can say for most games I loved as a kid.
I can appreciate it alot more now as an adult.

A little fact: Dee B. Baker who mostly well know voicing Clone Troopers in Star Wars animation and video game voicing Carnage and Lizard. He even reprise Lizard and Dr. Connors in Spectacular Spiderman years later.
Also i'm shock you called Tony Hawk Pro Skater instead Tony Hawk Skateboarding.

Had a lot of fun playing the wall crawler on the 64. Admittedly I never beat the last level.

I didn't even know the game had a what if mode. To be fair it's been years so I can't remember much of it. I do remember spending ages on that last level not realising I was suppose to swing to escape, so I just kept running and got caught 😂

2:12 More like Blue Cat WTF. Venom is blue in this game too, it's weird. Though he has been blue in other media like the Marvel fighting games by Capcom (save for MvCI and the Anti-Venom Battle Card in UMvC3) so IDK. Ironically Red Venom is actually one of his pallets (albeit white as the secondary color instead of off-yellow) in MvCI (and Anti-Venom is an alternate costume) but the blue color is not. The Dreamcast version didn't make them black but it did at least make them darker.

The ps1 port looks very clean for a ps1 game. Im surprised as i expected the usualy 5 shivering pixles for the character.

The PC port was the first spiderman game I ever played. I loved all the unlockabke suits, and looked up the cheat codes to unlock some of them. My favourite was peter with a paper bag over his head.

Friends, I will talk about a problem in the Venom episode. While Venom jumps from the skyscraper, Spider-Man also jumps but automatically falls to the ground. What is the reason?

I didn't have a memory card as a kid, so I had to try to beat it for the Playstation in one long session. The system overheated on the final level after leaving it on all day, and I never attempted the run again

I played the demo for the ps1 where you did the mission to get too and fight scorpion. It’s was really cool, and at a later point I got the full game and finished it and it was top notch for a licensed game at the time. I was only six and big enough to make it too the bathroom on time but I sure did take my time on the toilet. After a good hour on the can I came out too see my twin brother had been playing and I missed large parts of the story. But back then it didn’t matter so much. Was waaay better than the grinch who stole Christmas game. Love you flandrew
