    I would like to add .. in saltwater I would not recommend putting loctite on the impeller housing bolts .. use perfect seal or a light coat of anti-seize .. the factory uses loctite there I wouldn’t personally..

    Your a legend my friend! Thanks from Australia! I completed the 100h service from other video and it worked great. They charge $650 for that service here.
    I wasn't happy after my last service with local Mercury dealer here. They charged me for some parts and didn't even replace them. I service electronics and use a trick to see if they replaced the parts. I put a small mark with sharpie on the part then see if the mark is still there after I pick it up. Got charged for some filters and he swore it was replaced yet my sharpie mark was there where I put it. I was NOT happy. Thanks to your videos I now know the parts were replaced.

    Good, thorough demonstration! But after watching this vid, I'm glad I decided to let the boat shop replace the impeller on my Merc 115. Money well spent for someone that is not familiar with outboard maintenance and repairs. Replacing the impeller on our sailboat engine was way easier but that was years ago when I didn't mind doing mechanicin'. And had to do mechanicin' while underway.

    I just took mine apart and it shows the impeller fins twisting the oposite direction of how you inserted the new. Actually mine looks identical to your replaced impeller and you have 4 fins that turn clockwise and two badly worn. If you think about what you mention in twisting the impeller clockwise to insert it into the housing and the housing is upside down in your hand then you'd most likely want to twist it counter-clockwise while inserting. Either way it should not hurt anything though, but it is possible.

    when I put the impeller in I put it on the shaft and watch the keyway go in and rock impeller back and forth to be sure it's in position then slide the water pump top housing on slowly turning the drive shaft clockwise only as I put the pressure on the w/p top housing as it slowly goes down into position with a little pressure on it going down with my hand the reason I do it this way is if I put the w/p impeller in the housing first and push it down I've had the key fall out the way you do it even with the grease trick but if I put impeller on first and I can see the key go in and line up so I feel a lot better that I've got this part right but like you I have better luck doing the going back in the neutral position good video sir I guess different strokes for different folks lol

    Good job. Best video by far on this topic. Like you, I have found that the question of doing this in gear or neutral meets with about equal success. The Mercury manual says In Gear. Getting the weight of the propeller off of there is a must for this old man :-) Thanks much.

    Great video. When you say "bump start" do you mean use the key? Wont the motor start? I'm doing mine this weekend

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  2 месяца назад

      Yes use the key or a push button start jumper if you have one .. I've never had a problem using the key method but to be on the safe side unplug the crank position sensor on top of the engine at the flywheel. There is a two wire connector there red and white wires. The engine will turn over but will not start.. the risk you run not unplugging it like in the video is if the lower shifts into forward and the driveshaft engages in the engine, it can try to turn in your hands and hit you if the lower is not on the studs when it engages. This has never happened to me in my 10 years of experience but it is a possibility.. so to be on the safe side unplug the crank sensor and just have someone use the key bump it to start then back off as soon as it turns .. do this until it lines up. Let me know if you have any questions.. thanks for watching

    I replace my impeller every 3 years whether it need it or not. Every time I time I do it, I always have to remind myself where the blades face when I put it in the housing. The video shows the blades being bent to the right when the housing was removed (the housing being upside-down). When the new impeller was installed in the upside-down housing by turning the impeller clockwise, the blades were facing the opposite direction of the blades in the housing that was removed from the drive shaft. It's my understanding that if we have a right hand motor and we install the impeller holding the housing upside down we need to twist the impeller in with a counter clockwise rotation. With a right hand motor, If the impeller is on the drive shaft and we turn the shaft to the right (clockwise) pressing down on the housing will have all the blades bent to the left (if we were able to look down on the housing). If we removed the housing, holding it upside-down, we would find the blades being bent in the same direction as the blades in video when the housing was first removed (bent with the blade going to the right). It's not rocket science, but it's close.🙂

    I have the same motor. It hasn’t ran since I had it winterized in the fall.. I put the muffs on it but I didn’t get any water out of the telltale.Maybe ran it for 3-4 minutes . talked to the shop that winterized the boat and they indicated that if there was an issue with the impeller, they would have let us know in the fall. Could I “push” water through the clean out by the motor up and down switch on the left hand side? Or maybe gently insert a short piece of weed eater line in the telltale? Never having put muffs on before, I’m not even sure I had them on correctly. I did have some water coming out of the prop. Thanks!

    Should my Optimax 150 pee immediately, or does it wait until the engine is warm? I have fished a several years, but have never taken a boat out myself. My dad died about a year and a half ago and I now possess his Nitro 7.
    It has not been on the water in almost two years, and the batteries need to be replace. The cranking battery has totally died and I have tried charging it and reconditioning it. I also decided to replace the trolling motor batteries with Li Time (lithium) batteries, and am going to install a lithium charger, too.
    But, I already knew that the tell tale wasn't peeing from cranking it up a few months ago. I had tried muffs, but it never peed. I bought a large (soft) rainwater collection "can" and filled it up. That way the propeller can turn with no need for the muffs. Using both methods. it still never peed.
    I only found out today that I could screw in my hose to the left of the tell-tale. That did cause water to stream from the tell tale.
    But my main question still remains: Should the tell tale pass water immediately, or should it rely on the engine warming up enough to open up the thermostat?

But you can call my old shop in rocklin I worked at the bass pro out there.. they have by far the best price in town! And if you want they can just do the impeller change and you can do the rest of the service and save money.. thanks for watching

    Watched this video and my impeller change went great with only a couple of differences from this video.
    1. The shift shaft on my 2015 Mercury 150 4 stroke is about 1/3 the length of the one shown in this video. Probably the difference in length of the outdrive?? Yours is on a fishing boat, mine in on a pontoon boat.
    2. The nuts came off the studs no problem and with enough clearance, I did not have to lower the lower unit to get any of the nuts off.
    3. The new impeller did not just slip in the water pump casing with a turn of the wrist as in this video. The rubber was super stiff and it took some grease and cuss words to get that b!#ch in.
    4. I started as shown here in Neutral, but for some reason my shift shaft would "walk" clock wise or counter clockwise by itself making it difficult to re-insert while in the neutral position. I had to lower the lower unit just enough to get a pair of needle nose between the engine and lower unit to turn the shift shaft back to the neutral position and attempt to re-insert. After 4 tries and a couple swear words, I was able to do it and everything worked perfectly.
    My engine is a 2015 with 313 hours on it. The shaft seal was completely deteriorated and the impeller showed signs of being "set" as described in this video. Don't wait to do this...it's definitely worth it.
    Thanks for the video. It saved me a lot of money and the job, though intimidating at first, wasn't that bad after all.

    look at the impeller at mark 9:08 and then look at it at 13:14 the impeller blades are opposite. Which way should they be for a single engine Merc?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 года назад +3

      They should be pointed to the right when looking at it upside down.. I might have put it in backwards in this video I have a bad habit of doing that sometimes but they will typically flip the correct way once you fire up the motor.. thanks for watching

      Sometimes you have to wiggle it up and down. With the skeg and Cavitation plate.. if it still won’t come loose, some tapping around the cavitation plate with a dead blow hammer will usually do the trick.. thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any questions

    Question? The round white plastic piece that covers the upper drive shaft seals, which has that metal ring around it! Can that be taking off and be inspected inside and cleaned? And can I reuse the plastic piece and metal ring? I
    ride mine in salt water and want to make sure I don’t have salt corrosion under it. And to have a peace of mind. At around 10:56 on the video you can see the part I’m talking about. It has red letters on it. Thanks your videos are awesome!

      Or is it smart to replace the plastic piece, metal ring, and o-ring that goes around the plastic piece? And clean it out good. Actually I’m trying to pull mine out and seems like salt has it stuck pretty good. So I’m still needing help but gonna pull it out now that it’s stuck in their pretty good. As it doesn’t want to come out easy. I’m gonna let some corrosion x sit on it over night and hope it comes out easy tomorrow.
