    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 4 года назад

      Back when i got my SAR-1 & SAR-2, the SAR-3s were coming with converted bakelite mags and that was what was avilable. Shooting a friend's, reliability wasn't terrible but wasn't as good as my -1 & -2. So with that, i decided to pass. It wasn't til the WASR-3 that they started shipping with 2 Romie 5.56 steel mags. Those fit and function much better. I just never had the time to get one I suppose. I did have a 'Champion 2007' pistol for a bit, but that was before armbraces were a thing, so shooting it wasn't the greatest experience. I guess me & 5.56 cal Romanians just haven't had our timing down right over the years. If Century brings back the WASR-3, I'll grab one though.

      Misha I would try to get a hold of the original magazines as well as the romy steel ones if it seemed like they’re available but I’ve never seen a single one. The only issue I’ve had is breaking the front lug off the saga magazines but I’ve yet to have a stoppage personally. Hopefully when and if they bring them back they’ll have a threaded fsb or threaded barrel. If your ever in Tennessee and wanna shoot one just let me know.

  • @taylornutt
    @taylornutt 4 года назад

    Last year, I was fortunate to find an unconverted Saiga 223 at a pawn shop. I converted it myself and can definitely attest that magazines need to be fitted and you have to be figure out what your gun likes. I have successfully modified Arsenal, FB Radom and even a Romanian Weiger Copy to fit the Saiga. The Galil Mags latch in but sit too low to feed.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 4 года назад

      I've had good luck with the Polish Beryl mags in both Saigas and VEPRs in .223. A lot of people like using Arsenal waffles in their 223 AKs but in my experience, they usually need minor to moderate file-fitting because of the rib pattern & metal lugs. So with that, I go lazy and just use the Beryl mags, which seem to latch into a wider range of guns w/o modification needed.

  • @the308capital

    My only 5.56 AK is the Norinco 84S, I love the gun but damn do the mag prices suck (north of $100/ea). I was able to modify some promag WASR-3 mags that yield approx. 80%-90% reliability at best. You are right, all these proprietary mags helped to keep interest in these AKs low.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 4 года назад +2

      And its even worse with Chinese because Polytech .223 mags are different from Norinco too. Plus back then guns came in with 3 mags each and that was nearly it. They weren't bringing in crates of spare mags then like many importers do today.

    Always wanted a .223/556 ak, but the mags are expensive, sometimes hard to find, and have these fitment issues. it's why i'm looking forward to the PSA ak with the ar mag well with the drop free mags and bolt catch built in. but i do like those Archer 'squared up' m4 style stock, maybe a whole set would look good on a PSA ak.

    Something worth being said about the M90, it's also a genuine military rifle in a sense, and not just one designed for the export market. It's just, that's not how it ended up. The m90 was designed and intended to be the main future rifle of Yugoslavia, but then Yugoslavia fell apart, and Serbia that was left was financially ruined, going through a dark period during and after the Yugoslavian war. So the plan to roll out the M90 was never adopted.

      It seems silly to me to already declare their 5.56 AK (which we have no idea when it will ever come out, or where it even is in development) which doesn't exist yet to be a success. Even their newest release of the AK-E hasn't really been out long enough to prove whether it's good to go or not. Rob's test is a start, but his C39 and VSKA passed too, yet those are still correctly recognized as junk. I have concerns about PSA's quality control, having seen more than a few issues with GF3s and even AKEs both online and in person when transfers come through at the gun shop I work at. Particularly, the bent, rigid pistons that PSA was caught red handed lying about being called for by Soviet manuals. I want to wait and see how the AK-E and their other products to come out do, but I just don't understand them being hailed as God's gift to the AK world. They've had a pretty dismal track record and have been given many chances. They're still unproven and likely will remain unproven for at least several years. Building a 5.56 AK is a significantly different animal than 7.62 guns. There are so many differences. Judging just based on PSA's history, their 5.56 AKs very well may have issues that need to be resolved.

    5:10 - Not really, no 5.56 guns were adopted at all by anyone. Small numbers (single digits) of more recent patterns were tested in the field, but that's about it. The SIG 551L, G36C, and M4A1 were adopted by a few units. The Champion is also a Draco (11.25 inch), not a PM90 (11.75 inch) pattern. The 5.45 shorties (not adopted) made by the factory around, I think, 1994 introduced the shorter Draco system. The later 5.56 guns and the commercial Draco adopted it in 1997, when they began civilian sales.

    I'm holding out hope that maybe, just maybe, FB Radom will be pleased with the Mini Beryl's reception (and hopefully success) in the US, and this will make FB interested in giving us another chance with the full size rifles, except this time imported by Arms of America. I certainly won't be holding my breath, but wouldn't it be nice? The only reason I didn't pick up an Archer when they were available was because I was skeptical of IO's conversion job.

      Yep, wouldn't that be nice eh? I will say there was never any legal issues with importing more Archers/Beryl semi-autos. Back when Radom-USA blamed the ATF for their guns not coming in...well to be blunt, that was Radom-USA lieing and putting the blame for their poor decisions on someone else. I hate buck-passing shit like that.

      @cajuncatfish5417 4 года назад

      @@misha5670 Yup, Radom-USA was quite a blunder. Fortunately Arms of America has a much better track record. I hope FB's taste isn't too soured by the American market, but the Mini Beryl is a sliver of hope that maybe it isn't. Only time will tell. In the mean time I will probably get a Mini Beryl, but my luck with Krink-type AKs is like Jay's luck with FALs. I really would prefer a full size rifle, but maybe the Mini Beryl will be different from my past experiences.

    From my experience, the most reliable and easy to configure is a Bulgarian 74 parts kit conversion. Why? Because it literally runs all ammo (even out of spec Golden Tiger 223 that was made using 5.45 primers lol). I've fed it Circle 10, Beryl, and Russian 5.56 mags flawlessly. I love my Saiga, but the front trunnion needed modification to accept Bulgy/Polish mags. The SLR-106 is mostly reliable, but is a little more finicky with cheap ammo, which I suspect is because of its spring loaded firing pin.

      That thing about Zastava not having access to chrome deposites has pretty much been debunked. Its a traditional rumour & I heard it often back in the day, so i know where you are coming from there. I think they decided not to do it on their X39 guns but by the time they were designing their 5.56 guns 2 decades later, minds had changed. It could also be that 5.56 is a much higher velocity round, so the CL helps preserve the rifling longer? Its just how they roll...at least until the new ZPAP M70 that is.
