That said, I've owned 2 SLR106CRs, and both have worked well. In my experience chopping the CR's barreel down to the correct length does aid with reliability too.
I see many comments about not being able to find 5.56 AK pattern rifles. Rifle Dynamics may not be Arsenal Inc. but they do offer 5.56 AK pattern base platform at a reasonable price.
When RD runs out of SLR-106's for their "NATO AK," they will probably just use Bulgy kits with a 5.56 conversion barrel. The extractors are really easy to tune for .223 casings.
I had to send my 106CR to Arsenal in Vegas for repairs. It has quality control issues and they had to replace the shepherd's hook with a better mechanism because it was jamming. It quit jamming after that but it's still overgassed and ejects rounds long distances.

My 106 had the strangest problem i have ever come across in an AK. It would consistently fail to feed the 3rd to last round in every magazine I had. Smoke mags, black gen 1s and gen 2s, and beryl mags. The 3rd to last round would nosedive into the barrel, below the chamber, and while it did that the second to last round would pop out of the magazine. I have a video recreating it with snap caps i bought. I didnt want to send it back to arsenal for 3 months to get it fixed so I took it to a local gunsmith and he said he rounded out the bottom of the bcg and polished it. From the factory, the bottom of the bcg was incredibly square, almost had sharp corners. It seems as if it was completely out of spec. Anyways, after he rounded it off and polished it, it has been flawless for about 3k rounds.
I was able to pick up a 2006 make 106 at a pawn shop for $640 this last week. Haven't been able to figure out if it is one of the ones with the bad feedramp yet.
As of right now, the only SLR-106 I can find is the SLR-106UR as an SBR on KVAR. So you need to do a Form 4 NFA transfer through a NFA dealer. Honestly that's the best one anyway. If I had $1,600 to drop on a rifle right now that's what I'd buy.
@@MishacoOBA hello Misha, another great video, since finding your channel, I think I watched nearly all your videos, and I notice a common theme, I see you have slings installed only nearly all your rifles, is there a reason you like the use of slings.. me, I think they belong on any and all military type rifles.. I bet an attorney could successfully sue the ATF. Reference them not allowing the implementation of an out of battery safety, in the event there was an injury or damage to the rifle.
Great video. I love the 556 round & ak's. This video was filled with information i wanted to learn, thank you. Ian at forgotten weapons is the "Gun Jesus" Misha you are known as the "Gun Ghuru". Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on one of my favorite rifles🍻
Me too, its always been a handy, *relatively* lightweight, fun, and reliable carbine for me. Bought my first way back in 2007. The one in the video here I picked up back in hmmm 2015 or 2016? Either way, have had it for awhile and have put more than a few mags through it. Since i chopped the barrel, its been basically 100% reliable. I think it was a tad over-gassed with the 16" barrel?
While I like the ARM, I would perhaps argue if its really an 'AK'. I ean it uses the AK bolt system for sure, but in other ways its very different. Kind of gets you thinking how far a variant can go before its really no longer the same gun? Just musing, not saying I am right.
I picked up my SLR-106CR sometime in 2010’ish. It’s been a safe queen as I wanted to SBR it for an AK-102 clone. At the time I sucked it up and bought one translucent thirty rounder and nine black thirty rounders. Today I’m torn whether to sell it at a premium as it’s 100% NIB (I keep all my rifle boxes) considering the current state of Kalashnikovs post COVID or SBR it and finally go shoot it. Decisions...decisions...🤔
One of my SLR-106FR cracked its receiver. Cracked right at the most rear rivet of the side rail. The crack goes from the rivet to the top of the receiver, barely missing a bolt carrier guide rail. It has had a few thousand rounds through it tbh. It still functions though......
Sounds similar to what AKOU had go on with the NPAP...so could have come from over gassing with the BCG slapping the rear over and over too hard. I bet a stiffer recoil spring could help or just fire weaker steel cased ammo perhaps?
Yea, I need to put a recoil buffer in it. 5.56 AKs are way over gassed when using NATO loads. I’m just lazy and the receiver is already cracked on this one... soo I’m just going to run it tell it completely dies. We had a NPAP on the range I work at. It’s receiver cracked in two places. Once at a rear trunnion rivet, and then secondly the whole right bolt guide rail basically cracked and pealed off. I do not trust YUGO AKs for long term serious use. Not the first one I have seen cracked or have another issue. It was replaced by a century arms VSKA (I would have personally chosen a SAM-7 fixed stock), which seems to be doing fine so far.
My 106 u was one of the head scratchers where they shaved off the 24mm threads fitted a fake booster brake over it, where the barrel went all the way to the end of the muzzle device and pinned it in place. They screwed the pooch on that decision.
I have and love both models featured here. The CR has some brutal trigger slap though! Hopefully the ALG triggers I have on back-order ship soon. I plan on doing a E-file form 1 on the CR later this month.
The CR has trigger slap because it's massively over gassed. Mine broke its disconnector. You can see it in one of my videos. Replacing the trigger only helps lessen a symptom of the over gassing. Cut the barrel and it will change to simply being over gassed like most AK's.
Awesome video. I've been looking into 5.56 AKs for a while, and it seems like it's either this or a Saiga. Are those having the same issues of becoming more popular than their availability?
I have a new production 106f and have had issues with mine. The rear sight leaf was loose when i got it until I bent the spring just alittle more to increase the tension. Also using polish 5.56 magazines ive had feeding issues where the bolt will pick up a cartridge and bend it almost before it fully gets in battery. Causing the bolt to be stuck out of battery..... all this before 1k rounds.....
ballisstix consensus is that Arsenal USA is propping up the market but controlling the flow. In other words; they’re importable, it’s just that they “haven’t”
They can. Arsenal is just a bunch of assholes who are purposely controlling the supply of their rifles to increase demand and price. And on top of that, they will show on their website "Kvar" that only 7 or 8 different rifles are in stock, yet if you go to their Gunbroker page, they are auctioning off all the rifle they claim they are "out of stock" for up to twice the retail cost. Fucking dicks.
So are these still imported? I cant seem to get clear info on it, seems like they might just come in in *Very* spaced out batches, because i found articles saying they where discontinued in 2013 but i know that some came in in 2016 or 17.
The latest trunnion date I've observed on a SLR106 rifle is 2009...not saying that's the latest out there, just that I've had come in. Keep in mind, Arsenal sat on many for years before getting around to converting them and selling them off. So a rifle might originally have been made in Bulgaria in 2009, but not actually 'remanufactured' by Arsenal Inc. (USA) until 2016 or even 2019.
My recent slr107r would jot feed hollow points and fmj had issues also it was no feeding great ripping chunks of metal off the feed ramp wasnt set right.
what's the serial range for the defective guns? i have an old SLR-106FR that hasn't given me any problems, but i was unaware of the bullet guide issue.
The 106cr is so over gassed it doesn't work right in most cases. Not all but most. You will need to chop and pin barrel to reduce gas or kns piston. The feed ramp thing hasn't been an issue for a while. For example mine was so over gassed it was literally ejecting live rounds. The bolt carrier was smacking the rear trunion so hard it was moving rounds around and some time causing rounds to just jump out. It was weird. Once a kns piston was put in I reduced the gas setting all the way and it still ran. That's how over gassed it was. Here is the problem. The cr models all have a gas port for the shorter barrels. Including my 107cr. The 556 however is a very high pressure round and doesn't have as much taper to the case. So over gassing can cause feeding issues on the 106cr. Not a problem so much for the 762 cr. You don't see this with the newer 106fr cuz they have the proper gas port size. Arsenal won't admit this but go ahead and check the gas port diameter on your 106cr and compare it to an fr gas port size. Again I'm talking about the 106cr!! Not the fr or f models. Those all work fine and have been for a while. If your cr has an issue and its a newer production gun it has nothing to do with feed ramps. Its just way way over gassed and causing you some issues with feeding. Misha got lucky on his and it was running out of the box. This isn't the case for most 106cr owners.
Oh and the thing about the gas restrictor is only true with newer UR rifles. For some reason they haven't put them in the 106cr. When they really should.
For sure, its over gassed, but the severity depends on the ammo used. If you are firing true 5.56mm NATO 62g, it will be worse than if you are using Russian Wolf 55g. Still, i agree, bobbing the CR's barrel is just a good idea no matter what.
@@misha5670 yeah some are worse than others man. Mine wouldn't even run with low power steel cased stuff, forget the nato spec ammo. Lol it was brutal. If I kept shooting it anyway and ran it jamming every few rounds it would of destroyed itself. It was reAlly really bad. I used the kns piston first to be sure it was just the over gassing that was the problem. And sure enough it was. So then I had it chopped and pinned. Now it runs flawlessly. Still a bit harsh but not to the point of causing issues.
Also mine shot about 6moa with steel cased ammo. It was horribly inaccurate. With brass cases 55 grain it did much better but who wants to shoot brass out of an ak? If I only shot brass it would shoot about 3moa this stayed the same even after chopping it. It didn't change accuracy at all. 3 moa is fine tho but that's only with more expensive ammo. I thought that was kind of strange.
Brian Hess what mags do you use for your 84s? I have one local I can get for a decent price, but am worried about finding a few extra mags for an affordable price
I had 2 Arsenal slr106fr over the years they were great guns. but the Bulgarian Circle 10 black mags where way to expensive. Sold them and bought Colt 6920 and never look back.
I have an Arsenal SGL-10. It is the California version. Monte Carlo style stock. We can't be trusted with pistol grips in CA. I don't know why they say Bulgarian. It is a Saiga from Legion and converted by Arsenal. There is nothing Bulgarian on the gun. In the box was a coupon that I could send it to Arsenal and pay $50 for them to complete the conversion. Who knows if they will honor it?
Is anybody having trouble ejecting the black Circle 10 5.56 mags out of their 106? I bought 6 this year and all but a couple must have too much material on the “back catch” that goes above the magazine release or something else. I almost have to push the magazines forward while pressing hard on the magazine release to get them to pop back out. Also, one of the magazines is giving me feeding issues. I guess I may have some filing to do but I don’t want to ruin them. I do love my 106 though. I bought it for the exact reason you bought yours. I can’t run to a store and find 5.45 but I can sure find .223. Also, I love the look of the AK-74 so the 106 was the natural choice for me. 5.45 magazines fit in them as well and work up to 15 rounds sometimes so you can really get it to look like a true AK-74 for your amusement. One of these days I’ll dress it up with some wood furniture and give it a little class. Now how can I get my hands on a AKS skeletonized stock for a reasonable price!!!???
Poly AK mags, especially steel reinforced ones, are made oversized a little bit intentionally. You can always remove material, much harder to add it on later. Besides, most work themselves in after a few dozen uses. This is one of those things with factory new mags. With all the surplus we get, lord only knows how many times they've been pumped in/out of guns....and nope, not making that joke....nada.
@@misha5670 So you think my mags have been used before? They looked brand new to me lol. Yea If anything I'd just send them to Arsenal and have them work on them. They're Waaaaayyy to expensive for me to screw them up. Have you ever ran into the bake 5.56 mags? My buddy has one but they are really hard to find.
@@TheBiggestIron Its mostly K-var that has been getting them. They sellout pretty quickly, but they are coming in. Arms of America has Polish 5.56 mags in stock that work in the Bulgy guns too.
I actually did pick up a M85 pap for a good deal and it does take AR mags atleast this specific one. There are ones that take Original Serbian Mags. Besides the point the M85 ran great. Only issue I had was a stuck case with Tula but ive had many issues with Tula in other rifles.
The cr's had a bad batch years ago and the internet blew way out of perportion, and alot of peeps were using non Bulgarian/polish mags which helped contribute to reliability issues IMO
Thanks Mish 🙏🏽🙏🏽 for doing a vid on the “other AK” much appreciated! I have two saigas chambered in 223 and one takes the bulgys/Galil mags and the other only the Galil. Both are fully converted different importers.. it’s frustrating to say the least.
Absolutely love my 106fr which is a bd prefix. What’s not to love ? Ak74s that shoots our native 556/.223. To be clear, when i said 4 mags was good for me, i meant 4 per gun; so i have a total of 8 30 rounders to share between the SARPK5 & SLR106CR. Also, i have 2 or 3 20 rounders. For my Polish Archer, I have 7 mags, which is 2 pouches full. One of my own little OCD hangups is that all of my mags must be in pouches and each pouch can only contain 1 type of mag.
Misha & Jay : "What are your favorite military camouflage patterns??"
I love classic US Woodland. It's what I grew up with and all my milsurp army clothes were woodland. - Jay
Really? you're going to ask me that? lol
@Misha Just say E.German Rain, you know that's your gut feeling. - Jay
My gut was to say whatever pattern my old GI Joe Storm Shadow had on.....
@@MishacoOBA hello Misha, another great video, since finding your channel, I think I watched nearly all your videos, and I notice a common theme, I see you have slings installed only nearly all your rifles, is there a reason you like the use of slings.. me, I think they belong on any and all military type rifles.. Eric
From where I can buy the barrel of arsenal 223 barrel?
I'm also curious about this, all I could find was u.s. made 4140 barrels. I regret firing all that bimetal jacket out of it.
Thanks for the video! Big fan of the CR configuration with 4 piece hider.
Thanks for the video. So far my only 5.56 AK is my Galil ARM. I'm sure a 106 will find its way into my collection eventually.
While I like the ARM, I would perhaps argue if its really an 'AK'. I ean it uses the AK bolt system for sure, but in other ways its very different. Kind of gets you thinking how far a variant can go before its really no longer the same gun? Just musing, not saying I am right.
Shouldn't of waited. They are done importing them now
Why was it discontinued? Wouldn't it be a good idea for Arsenal to bring it back?
I picked up my SLR-106CR sometime in 2010’ish. It’s been a safe queen as I wanted to SBR it for an AK-102 clone. At the time I sucked it up and bought one translucent thirty rounder and nine black thirty rounders. Today I’m torn whether to sell it at a premium as it’s 100% NIB (I keep all my rifle boxes) considering the current state of Kalashnikovs post COVID or SBR it and finally go shoot it. Decisions...decisions...🤔
I just sbr'd mine, added a 100 series spring loaded guide rod.smooth top cover and a izhmash booster.. love it
Do you think if you can find one of these new at a good price it’s a must buy?
Ara Dolarian, Bulgarian owner of Arsenal Inc was arrested this year on charges of conspiracy and money laundering.
Why am I not surprised?
Lol that sucks i could of convinced him to smuggle me some 556 mags possibly then.
Is the smooth dust cover you added a milled one?
These are going for about 1,800-2,000 now.
Love my 5.56 Aks have the m90np and 106f
Pack Pistol Pali _ I passed up getting a m90np and regret it to this day.
@@adamarens3520 just be patient. Hopefully zastava USA will import some
One of my SLR-106FR cracked its receiver.
Do the 106FRs use AKM style extractors or 74 style?
Look at the prices of slr106s now. Rip
Have you or your brother ever had the chance to check out the Arsenal factory/company over in Bulgaria? Was just curious.
“Jay trigger finger Gonzalez” 😂😂
I love Arsenal rifles they have never let me down and are just a sexy rifle in my opinion.
Not exactly, they are having issues with having been banned over 5 years ago.
Panzerlied Where did you purchase it if you don't mind telling me?
Kyber762 it was recieved in trade for a sam7r
I know this is a old comment but I’m having almost the same issue with a 106FR I just bought using WBP polish mags
@@IamtheBrent those 106f were ass.
Why can't they import the 107fr anymore? I know they aren't banned if they are still importing the sam7.
ballisstix consensus is that Arsenal USA is propping up the market but controlling the flow.
Really? because I've never seen an SLR106 with a 2016 or 2017 dated trunnion. Do you have any links or pics?
@@misha5670 I could be remembering things wrong, mabey it was a 104?
The latest trunnion date I've observed on a SLR106 rifle is 2009...not saying that's the latest out there, just that I've had come in. Keep in mind, Arsenal sat on many for years before getting around to converting them and selling them off. So a rifle might originally have been made in Bulgaria in 2009, but not actually 'remanufactured' by Arsenal Inc. (USA) until 2016 or even 2019.
@@misha5670 Ahh, so the batches that slip out occasionally where probably made ages ago and sat around in a warehouse before getting converted
I know this is a dumb question but im wondering if .223 would be okay to shoot through the rifle since the bore is 5.56?
My recent slr107r would jot feed hollow points and fmj had issues also it was no feeding great ripping chunks of metal off the feed ramp wasnt set right.
Love your videos! What do you think of the Russian pufgun mags?
Without chopping the barrel down is the SLR106CR over gassed?
what's the serial range for the defective guns? i have an old SLR-106FR that hasn't given me any problems, but i was unaware of the bullet guide issue.
Yeah, the gas restrictor was only in later SLR106URs and SLR104URs. I have a 2013 104UR and no restrictor.
Mags that work. Bulgarian, Polish Beryl mags, TORA marked Yugo mags and Unity mags as of 2022. Promags fit, but mine didn't work.
I own 4 different 223 ak variants, the 2 you displayed ad well as sar3,and an 84s.Love em all, thanks for the vid!!!

M70ab2,
I had 2 Arsenal slr106fr over the years they were great guns. but the Bulgarian Circle 10 black mags where way to expensive.
I'm having extractor problems with my 106f. Weak extractor. Any tips?
Try replacing the extractor spring. Mac has a video.
Is anybody having trouble ejecting the black Circle 10 5.56
mags out of their 106? I bought 6 this year and all but a couple must have too
much material on the “back catch” that goes above the magazine release or
something else. I almost have to push the magazines forward while pressing hard
on the magazine release to get them to pop back out. Also, one of the magazines
is giving me feeding issues. I guess I may have some filing to do but I don’t
want to ruin them. I do love my 106 though. I bought it for the exact reason
you bought yours. I can’t run to a store and find 5.45 but I can sure find
.223. Also, I love the look of the AK-74 so the 106 was the natural choice for
me. 5.45 magazines fit in them as well and work up to 15 rounds sometimes so
you can really get it to look like a true AK-74 for your amusement. One of
these days I’ll dress it up with some wood furniture and give it a little
class.

I actually did pick up a M85 pap for a good deal and it does take AR mags atleast this specific one. There are ones that take Original Serbian Mags. Besides the point the M85 ran great. Only issue I had was a stuck case with Tula but ive had many issues with Tula in other rifles.
Yep, can almost promise you that was more an ammo issue than it was the gun's fault. We've both had some rather major issues with Tulammo.
I have enjoyed mine! Not bad rifle for jack rabbits and a great excuse to buy steel case ammo.
Do Galils use NATO M16 pattern mags?
No, but they look similar to ar mags.
I bought one about 6 months ago. It has soviet furniture on it now
Absolutely love my 106fr which is a bd prefix. What’s not to love ? Ak74s that shoots our native 556/.223. SLR-106 rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10 mags per rifle.
To be fair though, it really makes going to the range much easier.
