Why do we duplicate the photo and then merge the two, after removing background of one of them?...this point is not clear to me.

I just tried it and it's to keep the background of your picture to give it that coming out of a paper look.

Why 2 Photos?
So you can keep the background on the photo that is behind the paper hole, if not it'll be empty.
