Makes perfect sense to me. It’s an extremely uncomfortable/eeby jeebies laugh. Like laughing like a hyenna when embarassed/mortified. It’s a processing response. Aeris’s bodylanguage with it proves it too

@@anonymousfellow8879 No it wasn't intended to be an uncomfortable laugh. The VA says so herself, Aerith was sort of mocking Corneo by imitating his laugh. The reason why the directors asked her to make it sound bad is because Aerith is mocking him, BUT it's Aerith, so it STILL has to be CUTE even if the character is supposedly trying to make Corneo sound bad.
Also, the reason we probably didn't get the joke is because this is a very Japanese thing and is quite impossible to "localize". For CONTEXT! there's a thing in Japanese called "horse laugh" which the VA also mentions. Horse laugh is when a person laughs out loud obnoxiously (mouth open wide, head tilted up) and is considered very unlady-like. The Japanese onomatopoeia for a horse whinny in Japanese is うきうき (hihiin). In the Japanese version, Aerith says "hohiin" when she "laughs", changing the first syllable to "ho" probably to make it sound "obnoxious". (ruclips.net/video/MJYOrAlTLKo/видео.html) [edit: VA also mentions she couldn't copy what the Japanese VA did/said and I think that's because it would not make sense in English anyways.] This is basically Aerith blowing a raspberry. If you replace the Aerith's weird laugh with her sticking her tongue out and blowing a raspberry, but keep her body language and it makes more sense [edit: because as Briana mentions, "That's Corneo's pet, and we defeated it!"].
So basically, Aerith has to act cute and ladylike, but she's trying to imitate a "horse laugh" to mock a person she dislikes. I can only imagine how difficult this scene could have been for the VA to do with so many things to consider! And it's just a super short clip! It wasn't even really that important to the scene, Aerith was just being Aerith. In the end I think they went with this take so in case the western audience doesn't get the joke, you can just assume she's just grossed out or getting the eeby jeebies.

That’s literally not what Aerith is doing though. That’s just what the VA went with while trying to make sense of an apparently poorly communicated instruction from her director.
Literally look at her body language, her expression, the tense situation and “yes we really did just survive that” immediately following a Still Extremely Tense situation
And if Aerith was intended to be impersonating Corneo? She’d be leaning back with her hand on her belly or leaning forward rubbing her hand, with her mouth open, and giggling.
The character is doing none of those things. Everything about the character telegraphs Extreme Discomfort (and laugh reflex as a stress response)
I thought she was cringing over the idea of being eaten.

I think it's fine if Aeriths character sounds kinda corny & wacky at times. It's part of her characters charm. It's that weirdness that gets Cloud to come out of his shell. You did a fine job.
Aerith's uniqueness really makes her "homely and plain" status redundant even if she is compared to Tifa.

0:38 I didn't realize it was a "laugh", I always assumed it was more of a shiver of disgust, that's especially the feeling I got with the face Aerith is making. ...like the entire situation is pretty heavy at this point.
Yeah... if she was making a joke then she should be facing the two people in the room that would appreciate it. Looking away from the others into outer space is more of an expression of the character's inner emotions about the situation. Plus I didn't register Corneo's laugh before as a laugh. He was just making weird-creepy-man noises to me.
Me finding out Aerith's VA is a fledging VA... big risk for triple A, paid off. Would never have guessed.

Square is well known for that. They keep on using newbie VA for their games, maybe because they are much cheaper than famous VA? But it kinda helps too, there are many good VA out there that are not very famous. I hope she gets more VA roles.

She did a good job. The voice caster made the right pick for the voice.

I was wondering why I didn't hear anything off durin this scene when playing through it in the Japanese dub. I thought it was the whole FFX thing again-

The reason I most often like the original Japanese voices much better. They try to force the english voice actors too much into what the japanese sounds like and make it overly complicated.

I just feel like the Japanese did a bit better in terms of delivering the emotions of the characters, while the English version seems to fall a bit flat in their lines. The English VA team did do great tho and I prefer Barrett and Cloud's english VAs over the Japanese ones.

Oh, I actually guessed right when I played this part myself. I thought she was totally digging at Corneo, but the lack of any reactions or dialogue about it made it super unclear whether that's what she was actually doing
I got it as well but Tifa and Cloud not reacting didn't help. They could have at least have given her weird look or something. Then again we all did that one thing we thought was funny but nobody reacted.

It would've worked better if Tifa giggled after while Cloud gave an amused smirk to clue you in on she's making fun of Corneo but they were limited to the Japanese Dub which might not have needed as much context.

Here's a better explanation:
In the Japanese version, Corneo does an onomatopoeia that sounds similar to a pig. (ほひ！ pronounced "Hôhi!") The emphasis is to make him seem more like an gross, instintful animal by context based on how he does the "Marriage Ceremonies" where he treats the women like an animal ready to eat fresh meat. So intially what Aerith is mocking in the original script *is* that ”ほひ！” in Japanese.
It's a bit dumb that the direction in translation doesn't sound like it was explained well to her. Then again, contexts like that are difficult to try and explaining into English which make me feel the translators should've kept it.
The real question is why change the obvious reference of a pig to a horse? They could've just done some nasally laugh to make it sound like a pig that's been done in cartoons for the last century, literally nothing about him makes me think "horse".

That's the curse of localizing translations. Contexts get lost of the sake of making it easier to understand to your audience. Plus it's also where the localization for the American staff have to also follow to motion capture of Aerith's model animation as well. Keep in mind, if you were the switch the audio language for the characters to Japanese in game the English translations for the subtitles don't match at all.

Again, just know the localization staff for translations tried to make the script in a context that would make sense in English, which obviously didn't make sense to the VA. Translating is one thing, but localizing is a whole new beast especially from Japnaese to English.
There's a whole culture in what and how characters say things. For example, the voice actor for Barret nailed him in the English version how ever the context is now lost from the Japanese version that he turns into a "loud Jolly Santa Claus" when it comes to Marlene versus "melting like chocolate" in English if that makes sense. Or with Tifa, she's super motherly from the performance of the English VA according to her character, but the context from the Japanese version of her being a shy and a reserved quiet speaker gets lost as well. (as in that characteristic is more obvious in Japanese than in English) In retrospect, both reenactments by both English VAs are correct.
Totally. I played normal with JP voices and hard with ENG. In JP Corneo's scene, this sound gets stuck in your head. He even says "hohi" the first time he shows his face, instead of "Ladies!". Even when he's alone with lady Cloud the darned "hohi" plagues the scene possitively because it makes it Corneo's trademark. When Aerith imitates him you totally get reminded of that annoying sound.
In the ENG version I totally missed it not because of Aerith, but because of Corneo's script. Idk, he doesn't say it enough, or make it annoyingly recognizable.
To be fair, the actress(maybe because of bad direction) is missing the „mocking“ tone in her voice. Which is easy to do and pick up by audiences naturally

Thats got to be a trip being a voice actor of an iconic character in one of the biggest games of all time just reading lines and not knowing for what scene or anything until you play it yourself months/years later. Going by her reaction this was the first time hearing it after the 20 versions she already gave. Still a great performance throughout 👏
I can't tell whether it makes less sense without context, or WITH context lmao.
Nonetheless, it made me laugh regardless of how/why it was put there of all places. I'm glad that FF 7 Remake has it's own sort of weird, misconstrued moments tbh. It gives the game it's own wacky modern day feel, even if it's out of place.
I honestly believe that is why the original game thrived so much, enough to the point where a remake was demanded for 2 decades. It's small WTF moments like this that endear people to games like this and stick with them forever, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

I also feel that it was the director's fault as they should have shouldd Aerith smiling and doing more of a dance with it. At least then it would look more like someone mocking another.
When you look at Aerith's face, you expression looks normal like a frown or even slightly disturbed. That's all the problem with the snimation and the directior for not conveying what they should have in that moment. Voice actress did the best she could.

When I heard that I just thought it was a cute reaction from a frustrated Aerith, to me that fits pretty well in her personality and therefore did not felt out of character.

In the Japanese dub it's more obvious since every sentence that corneo says he always makes a pig sound "ho-hee" It gets annoying but aerith imitating it in the sewers came off as cute instead. In the Japanese dub ofc

Because there's no context linking one to the other. Aerith's noise immediately follows Cloud saying "we were about to be its dinner." Then Aerith appears to make a disgusted face, and the noise sounds like a disgusted reaction to the thought of being eaten by Abzu. I never in a million years would have guessed she was imitating Corneo. Why would an imitation of him even make sense at that moment?
I love every scene Corneo is in but I never made the connection.
Oh boy, this reminds me of those Kyle McCarley and Kira Buckland talking about all of the decisions made in nier automata, or Joe Zieja talking about the lysithea support.

Am I the only one who didn't hear the connection between Aerith's laugh and Corneo's laugh? Maybe the gamemaking team (and I include the VA) didn't quite manage to make this moment work. It was a very difficult task and easily one of the most forgivable failures.
You could even get away with not explaining it. We won't mind.

In the original game, the graphics weren't detailed enough for characters to be truly unique. Therefore, important characters had certain movements that they would make instead. Like when Tifa offers cloud a drink and says "made by yours truly" and hold her arms up, and aerith says "thanks anyway!" And nods her head and points upward. They had those movements in the OG. Corneo had and has a shimmy that he does with his arms.
I rarely commit to a 5 minute video but Briana White is so adorable and the explanation so amazing I watched the whole thing 😂

The first time I heard that I was so confused bc in the German version corneo says "hohiii" pretty often and aerith said "hohiii" in this scene so I immediately knew what she did. It was pretty obvious. After I played the game I watched cohhcarnage who is an American streamer and I remember being so confused with how different the lines are. It's not just translated it feels like you play two different stories and meet different characters which I really think is cool.
(fun fact: the English version sounds so much more brutal and harder bc in the German version all the swear words got taken out but the English version has some of the best one liners. As example "nailed it, I know, thank you, moving on" Sry if I didn't get it in the right order but you know what I mean )

Say what you want of this remake but the voicework is legitimately the best in any game.. i read fast and am happy to breeze through dialogue but was super about taking it slow and taking it all in on this one seeing your pride on the work just adds to it all hope you have a long career and they keep making you curse lol
