- Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer was an incredibly successful night fighter with 121 victories, mostly against British four engined planes. Using a technological innovation of 20mm cannons on his Bf 110, mounted near vertically like organ pipes enabled him to shoot Allied craft from below.
The noise the cannons made sounded like Jazz drums to the German pilots and they nicknamed it Schraege Music. It was the sound of disaster for the allied crews and they nicknamed Schnaufer the Spook of St Trond.

"rear gunners rarely survived" I have a fun fact for this one, there have been 2 cases 1 B17 and 1 Lancaster where the tail was cut of from the plane and the rear gunners glided back to the surface

The Lancaster was notoriously difficult to get out of - one of the few things that was better with the Halifax.

Another great animation!! The equivalent of 5 squadrons downed just goes to show how much peril the crews of RAF heavies were in every time they set off for Germany. The night fighter role was ideally suited to the bf110, particularly in the hands of such a skilled pilot.
Shameful the British did not develop adequate night fighter protection. Not an easy task, I understand, but sooner or later he will shoot down the Nazi bastards like this. In the daylight these BF 110s were complete dogs against single engine Allied fighters and they were decimated.
@@steveperreira5850 Yes, like Stuka crews their pilots thought themselves part of an "Elite" and after a disasterous sortie over Kent in 1940 when a large number were shot down, ever after they just flew in defensive circles when challenged over enemy territory. Stukas after the similarly disasterous unescorted sortie on Portsmouth Harbour when 54 Squadron splashed fifteen Stukas they were not sent over without fighter protection again. 54 Squadron were said to have give "Dover Ack Ack" three of the kills.

@@steveperreira5850 yeah... because a Bf-110 wasn't meant to be a daytime fighter killer. Germany needed something to stop nighttime bombing raids, so they made the Bf-110. they had other planes to combat Allied fighters, obviously...

As a german, I appreicate these stories being retold with these (though rough but passionately-made) animations that bring them to new life greatly.
The atmosphere is conveyed so exceptionally well.
When I see the ace take a sigh of relief before walking off under the morning sun after his newest victory with that icnoic, german smirk on his face, it feels like I was in his boots.

Not far from where I live right here in Belgium is a memorial stone from a lancaster that was shot down on June 22 1944. Its near a forest where I usually go for a walk. On the stone is a plate with the names of the crew. I try to visit it most of the times I go there, just to pay my respects, and think about what these brave men did for us. Just a few years ago I did a little research, and found out that this was one of the crews that got shot down by this night fighter. The men inside where so young....I often think about them....and still have tears. What they did for us, I will never forget!! Thank you brave men, rest in peace, and may God bless you.

Wonder if this would've worked against something like a B17, as it had a ball turret. But still 20mm, vs a twin 50cal turret isn't a defence which would make the ball gunner confident.
Planes with Schräge Musik would always engage at night as British bombers, their primary targets, always do night bombing. British bombers would be their primary targets since they had no ball gunner. US bombers on the other hand, always do bombings when the sun is still up. Even when US bombers do night bombing raids for some reason, I think Schräge Musik pilots were instructed to not engage bombers with ball gunners. If they insist on attacking bombers like B-17s, things would not end well for the German night bomber hunters.

I say unless the gunner was in the ball turret, the initial surprise attack still would've gone smoothly. My guess it would've cut the losses down to 4 or 5, mainly due to the combination of American Flak and the ball gunners deterring them from making a pass or two.
@@ZackaryWilliams77 The gunner was mostly always in the ball turret, except during take off and landing, as even with the ball turret retracted, landing with the gunner still inside was considered to be dangerous.
The 50 calibre is about 13mm, so maybe the 20mm would fair better.

@@devnandannair2336 yes, but no one is perfect though. Even BBC makes mistakes and when you're gathering some information about a specific topic, you'll not just stick to a single video though. You'll read numerous articles and watch other videos in order to fortify the knowledge you have. Still it's 10/10 cuz, limiting the length of that video in just a short duration will take some good skills, and you need to risk some details in order to make your video catchy and easy to understand.😊

@@therandomone4822 yes unfortunately that was the case but my point is that we shouldn't be calling anyone who fought for Nazi Germany legends. While it is unfortunate and sad that millions of people were made to fight, they still fought for the horrible cause of the Nazi party. For example we wouldn't call kamikaze pilots legends after sinking an entire ship just because he was conscripted would we?

I live in Belgium, in St Truiden (or St Trond in French). A little bit of research learned me he got his nickname because he was stationed in here in my town (we have a military airport here, although it’s out of service now), while we were still occupied, and that’s why he got this name…

My great Aunt's fiancee was a Polish Flight Engineer, he was lost after his 300 Sqdn Lancaster was shot down by the Luftwaffe Ace, Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer (The Ghost of St Trond), in 1944, flying a BF110 Nightfighter.
I discovered this after I saw the Tailplane from Schnaufer's plane in the Imperial War Museum in London, with the kill dates from 25-04-44 painted on it.
Sent a shiver up my spine!

Keeping a POW in captivity for a year after the war is not 'fair' - not at all. When the war ends, prisoners are meant to be repatriated soon after, in accordance with international law.

Another masterful piece of history telling. Enemy or not he fought for his country with skill and courage and therefore deserves to be remembered.
I absolutely love the facial expressions in these animations! The smug grin of Schnaufer and his crew at the start, it's like watching a movie where the protagonist is about to pull off something crazy.
I loved reading about German night fighters when I was young and this video definitely hit the spot. Your animation of the Bf-110 looks fantastic, I really can’t compliment it enough.
I really enjoyed following the facial expressions of Schnaufer throughout the sortie, and that moment with the Bf-110 attacking a Lancaster while vertical was amazing. Great job!

Small recommendation for videos. At the end of them, you should include a real photograph of the person or people or vehicle described in the story. I think it would be more impactful to see the real faces behind the story after a video that's just an animation.

Spoke to an old Lanc crew member who survived. He said he always worried after they'd left the drop zone that any minute, in the darkness, all hell would come tearing through the underside of his aircraft.
He will be long gone now I guess, God bless him.

This is by far my favourite history channel, I’m a big 8 year old history-buff and nothing beats this.

The “Spook of St. Trond” is one of the coolest nicknames I have ever heard of any person in he military.
It also isn't real, as no one on the Allied side knew who he was. WWII wasn't WWI where pilots were so few that the other side knew who they were.
As much as Yarnhub makes good videos, they largely rely on whatever book they read on the topic, regardless of whether those books are fully accurate. The "Spook of St. Trond" was an embellishment made up by German writers who wrote "pulpy" pro-military magazines during the post-war period, which were heavy on sensationalism and light on fact. Unfortunately some of this stuff had great reach (German writer Franz Kurowski for example largely popularized the idea of "Panzer Aces" even though the concept didn't really didn't exist during WWII in the German army), and as a result the "Spook of St. Trond" has made it into mainstream books because authors never bothered to look into it.
Peter Hinchliffe in his excellent Biography on Schnaufer goes into the fine details on the topic and shows where these myths came from. Schnaufer was an excellent and skilled pilot, but when you're the best of the best, invariably people tend to mythologize you, and there is a lot about Schnaufer out there that isn't true.
It's been a while, as always, your video was spectacular, always amazing to learn stuff each time you upload, the animations have evolved so well too

Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer shot a Lancaster of the 405th Pathfinder Squadron on November 23, 1943 above Ter Apel in the north of Holland.
6 crew members died and 1 crew member survived and ended up in a prison camp in Germany and survived the war.
Every year we remember those who then gave their lives for us.
This year it is 80 years ago and we are holding a big commemoration in Ter Apel.
I respect and try to remember the sacrifice of the german soldiers who fought like lions during the second WW2 even while havily outnumbered the fought till the end. Respect and RIP. They gave it all with honor and loyalty till the bitter end.

Excellent video on Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer. One notable error regarding the vehicle he was driving at the time of his accident. Animation shows him in a Volkswagen Beetle, but in reality it should be a Mercedes-Benz 170 convertible.

Damn 2 in less than a week! I didn't know about this particular pilot. I'm not calling this a bad story I really loved it, but I hate about hearing stories of any kind where the protagonist survives and does the unthinkable then dies in peace time in something as simple as a car accident or a fall down the stairs. The person looking after them from above blinked for a second and it happens it seems. Also shame the Brits didn't preserve the entire aircraft.

My father was a mechanican on the airfield of Brustem, which is a suburb of Sint Truiden . He was a member of the Nightfighters. Every year I come along this airfield when I visit my cousin and her daughter. And every time I remember the stories my father told me about that time.

At around @02:30 ->“Aha! schräge musik!” or as stated zee German’s colloquial term for “Jazz” or literally “oblique, strange music” for their near vertical 20mm cannons aimed for shooting long-range bombers above from the blind spot below is hilarious but viciously deadly. Yarnhub is so awesome. The animations are superlative & the historical incidents are amazing & sobering lessons about history & military history. I am an ex-Army veteran, & big history & military history buff who thought was pretty well versed WW2 history but still learned a bunch of esoteric little history nuggets from YarnHub. What an excellent channel & superlative history treasure. YH truly makes learning more history fun. I learned a lot more about Hans-Joachim Marseille & Hanz-Wolfgang Schnauzer, the aforementioned “Spook of At Trond.” Man, who has better nicknames than Luftwaffe aces? “The Black Devil.” “The Spook of St Trond.” Everyone knows “The Red Baron.” As an ex-Army tanker & ground soldier I’m partial to ground forces but there’s no denying the wonderful help of close air support & the romanticism with airplanes. This is why I’m especially fond of A-10’s because they’re the “Grunts of the Sky.” I just wish that Panzer Aces outside of Hauptsturmfurher Michael Wittman had more notoriety.
As romantic & heroic as these heroic incidents were & as beautifully portrayed as they are, we must never forget the sheer brutality involved & those that perished oftentimes horribly these wars. I luckily was never deployed as I got out right at the beginning of the war. While I was curious to see how I’d fare in war, I count my blessings as I know guys who’ve been indelibly changed & scarred from Iraq & Afghanistan. I know some like my former Platoon Sergeant, CSM Kevin Griffin who was disgustingly killed by an abhorrent suicide bomber. We mustn’t forget that war is hell.
Thank you YarnHub for these wonderful animations & history lessons. Keep up the great work for you are a YT treasure that can help make learning military history fun for younger generations which is a great tool for posterity as sadly it seems these lessons are crucial in helping man remember that it has a demented proclivity to violence & war. It’s sad but true. 75+ years ago Werhmacht & Red Army soldiers spilled their blood on Ukrainian soil & there was a collective scream of “Never Again!” Yet here we are. Again. Spilling blood.

The literal translation of "schräge Musik" reveals a another reason behind the name of the gun. "schräg" can mean many things in English for example "skewed ,weird, trippy, oblique" but also "angled, diagonal, angular, tilted". So the term comes from the "weird" Jazz music, but the guns are actually at an angle, so when they fire they also play angled/weird music!
