Good to see you again, Tiffany! It's interesting that you brought up stuttering less when "playing a character". A long time ago, I learned what fluency felt like by copying George Carlin's "Hippy-Dippy Weatherman" character (I'm old). I began speaking in that persona on a regular basis in order to cope. Of course, people treated me accordingly, based on that impression. Later on, I copied Bruce Willis' less goofy "snarky" speech pattern instead (which is ironic, because Willis himself uses that manner of speech to cover his own stutter). The problem with this technique is the risk of "losing oneself" in the character you're playing, which opens its own psychological can of worms. Thanks for these videos. Your insights are very much appreciated! 🙂
I definitely can relate. Reading in school was torture. I felt like everyone thought i couldn't read. So, i stutter more when i read things but i am working on reducing my negative feelings towards it. :)
Thank you for making this video. I am thinking about writing an interactive series of stories to bring awareness to disorders like stuttering and your video is going to help me a lot with shaping my character.
One of the factors why I stutter less when I read may be because there is less resposibility on me to the words I read, because they are "someone else's", not mine. It's because of a mix of subconscious and conscious fears and insecurities which emerge in people with chronic stuttering. Furthermore, at some level of severity, it becomes inefficient to hide it. So when you read there is no fear that your "mask" is going to be ripped off.
Just wonderful, I have been researching "can reading out loud help stuttering?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Deyarper Especial Dominance - (do a search on google ) ? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to get rid of your stuttering once and for all minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have worked with PWS. I think if you can get to the cause of your stutter, you can get to the cure. I have found the cause of 100% of my clients. Stuttering is caused by a traumatic event between the ages of 2-7. Any thing from a dog barking in a child's face, to a child seeing someone get shot! This is the spectrum that I have worked with. A lot of people can't remember what caused their stutter. But the subconcious remembers everything. So with Hypnotherapy it is easy to get to the traumatic event. Now that you understand what caused the stutter, now you can let it go from your mind and body. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your time.
i think because you feel you cannot be spontaneous when you read..you will say what is written and "everybody can check it " ... it is the feeling in mind...
Don't you ever think to switch your stuttering pattern as you are severely struggling for over 30-seconds just to get one letter out? Those 30--sec are huge. What actually prevents you from getting out of your "stutter-comfort-zone" in an attempt to get that word out of your mouth? How does it physically and emotionally feel to eventually say the word particularly if you struggled for over 100 seconds to complete a couple of words?
I’m 51 years old and I’d never heard of overt and covert stuttering until around a month ago. I’ve discovered I’ve been a subconscious covert stutterer as I tick all those boxes, swapping words or changing the whole sentence to avoid words. Talking in regional accents, I’m from the UK so it’s a bit of Newcastle, Welsh, Irish, cockney and so on. I’ve mentioned my stutter to people and often had the reply “you don’t stutter” I silently block so I can hear it. I’ve been overtly stuttering with close friends and in situations where I feel ok to do so(not in work)and it’s a relief and weight lifted to just ramble and not to be scanning ahead for hard words. I’ve also discovered I have a reading voice which is a little higher in pitch and has rather more rhythm than my normal speaking voice but if I read without doing that I’m all over the place, very dis fluent. Since openly stuttering and telling people what I’m doing I’ve blocked lots of times but stammered my way through and people know I’m wanting to talk and only twice was I left totally unable to speak and the conversation went on without me, which is most annoying. So weirdly through dis fluency come fluency.
Hey Tiffany, thanks so much for the video! Very insightful! One question I have is that I noticed that when you get caught in a block, you ride it out a bit quietly rather than creating assertive/powerful repetitions. I used to do this too, but the conclusion that I came to was that immediately saying the first sound of the word very audibly can release pressure, struggle, and pent up energy, and help me not hold back and retreat into my unconscious, if you know what I mean. I also think when we stutter quietly while blocking, our focus ends up going to our throat and mouth, which feels more constricting than speaking deep from the chest. Do you have any thoughts on this? I learned this from the RUclips Channel “Stuttering Mind”, “How to not stutter like a mouse.” I know the title sounds a little offensive but it’s the video that illustrates the point, and really has helped me
I guess the way I see it metaphorically is like, stuttering quietly is like leaning back while trying to punch a punching bag. While stuttering loudly and powerfully is like leaning into the punch when punching a punching bag. The latter is a stronger approach because it helps our our mind commit and our body commit, which is the same approach we need for stuttering, because stuttering is also both physical and mental. Just my thoughts
I also stutter and my stutter makes me feel so embarrassed cause my mom always tells me to stop stuttering but I just can’t! i’m trying to make my stutter less noticeable, I stutter every 3 seconds I speak, and my speech teacher has told me to say your words as if your singing, and it works, she says to slur your words and pronunciation!
Take a deep breath, relax every muscle in your body, pretend you are alone, and see every one else as one inch tall. Reading is harder because you cannot substitute any easier word to say, or get out. Praying first helps me.
Hi Tiffany !! I noticed that your stuttering got lesser the more you read and you were stumbling upon fewer words compared to when you started reading.
Just wonderful, I have been researching "stuttering techniques talking while exhaling" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Rincaas Stammify Blocker - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my co-worker got excellent results with it.
