  • This week, Hodinkee Editor Tony Traina is joined by Founder Ben Clymer and Style Editor Malaika Crawford to take a look at one celebrity's watch collection, which they use to zoom out and talk about trends, tastes, and how they change over time. And that celebrity is the one and only Sir Elton John.
Nearly 1,000 pieces of his estate are at auction at Christie's this month, including more than 30 watches. The collection is perfectly Elton - super loud, but also representative of classic watchmaking, and how trends have changed over time.

That cheese knife has to be the most valuable/notorious item of humour in the entirety of the watch world.

I think my favorite part of this was where they didn’t bother to edit out people talking over each other. Felt even more serious and professional than the cheap Zoom background blur effects covering up the lack of a proper set.
It is a close tie, though, with Ben talking in every direction except the microphone.

Tony did a fantastic job as a host. Felt like the old Hodinkee Radio hard hitter days.

I deff look for value. I’m really interested in zenith because I feel like they offer really good value. Will likely be my next buy. Vintage or new.

Interesting that Ben said a crash is pedestrian but not a tank or sub. If it’s classic it’s not pedestrian but if it’s trying too hard it is?

Not gold but the Grand Seiko (SBGY013) Omiwatari would be perfect as a modern dress watch! Surprised no one recommended it. Many more from the Elegance collection to consider, from limited editions to region specific models. Also, Longines DolceVita is an underrated pick for far less than 15K.

Boy oh boy. How far this company has fallen at this point. I hope for a return to the glory days at some point, but think some major personnel overhaul would be required, and that’s unlikely because no equity in the comp equation anymore. This thing is on the path of Vice.

the worst about hodinkee are the toxic streaks in their community (commenting community)

Hodinkee has been asking for it over the past 18 months or so, and the community has been giving it to them. What's the problem with that?

@@Leaveyourcarrunninginthegarage You clearly don't know what Hodinkee used to be, and how loyal us fans were due to their high-quality content. Those of us who still here are just hoping for a return to that, but fewer of us remain with each passing day.

Genuinely disappointing how far Hodinkee has fallen. What was once an outlet for something all us watch lovers could rejoice in is now nothing more than a pretentious circle jerk. We're really out here calling things "pedestrian"? Disappointing at best.
