"The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday voted to restore “net neutrality” rules that prevent broadband internet providers such as Comcast and Verizon from favoring some sites and apps over others.
The move effectively reinstates a net neutrality order the commission first issued in 2015 during the Obama administration. In 2017, under then-President Donald Trump, the FCC repealed those rules."

This is a topic I need to address- I would never have known that this was an issue at all if not for the coverage by TYT. It’s not the sexiest story, but it’s super important and I’m so grateful to TYT for stories like this. 💙
what do you mean it's not sexy?
i'm rock hard!
Great news. This was a major concern for small websites that couldn't compete in a pay for access system.
When corporations say regulations that protect consumers and workers are "unnecessary", the regulations are definitely needed.
When Republicans are agin it they are definitely good.
If its "unnecessary", why do companies care?
Because it IS necessary.
How long did we not have it? Did anybody notice?
Well said!
@@dwightschrute47well I sure as hell noticed!
my bill went from $140 month to $178‼️
Its pretty crazy how big reversing net neutrality was at the time, and just how small it seems now in light current events.
I mean, I understand, other stuff aside, if the Government now can just pick and choose websites to ban because of alleged "reasons" that they can't show the public, but "trust them", then this could defeat the purpose.
Nothing happened without it, big nothing burger.
@@dwightschrute47 Well no, ISPs just didn't throttle peoples internet enough for them to really complain in large numbers. But they can and do throttle. But on the other end of it, I sure as fuck wasn't getting 300-400Mbps speeds for 59.99 before, while it was a utility. But, even tht showed tht they very well could have given those speeds with zero issue, they just didn't. It's definitely a grey area I think.

@@celestialnubian the Fairness Doctrine covers more than television news. It's a set of commission oversights designed to present all sides of the issues of the day, which promote critical thinking and impartiality on the part of the news media, ALL media.
When the Fairness Doctrine was repealed, corporations began investing in telecommunications companies. Coincidence? I think not. There is no more free press in America. No more public trust. No government accountability. Without that, we do NOT have a free society, and if you think we do, you're dreaming.
I’m not sure whether it was coincidence or not, but after the repeal, my internet would stall on pages but ads would load faster. Glad this has been fixed.
you know you can block all the ads, right?
*WOO-HOO!!!* 🥳🎉🎊🎇🎆🎇🎆
My internet company would send a text saying you’ve used 75% of your data. And if you go over they charge you more. Just insane! Greedy.
Yep. I go over 100% of my unlimited high speed data every month, because apparently "unlimited" means something different to them.
This happened to me once in college where I was paying for the Internet for the whole household. Some rich students download it cracked copies of all the modern warfare games, then left for spring break. We didn’t have Internet for the whole month as a punishment for going over the data cap.
Net Neutrality has no bearing on Data Caps... that's a function of Network Capacity and what your ISP thinks is fair usage for the Speed Tier you pay for. We can debate whether you think that cap or your overage fees are fair or not (and usually they are not), but in the end, despite the host's assertion, Net Neutrality wont change that business model. It's just not in the legislation, anywhere... past/present/future
@@mackobun ok than I misunderstood what this bill is about. What are they doing?
@@1Storm6
Net Neutrality sets out to limit your ISPs ability to throttle your bandwidth to particular sites. An example that was common back in the early 20-Teens was reducing your bandwidth to Netflix because the overwhelming amount of traffic from subscribers to the streaming services overwhelmed network capacity. It also helps avoid ISPs making deals with other companies to route your search requests (for example) to other search providers that they have handshake deals with. Its too bad these guys went off script on this one and just started baggin on ISPs. ISPs deserve it in a lotta cases, but their ad-hoc rants just muddied the waters on this issue.
It's about damn time.
This is just another way of saying censorship.
That’s great! Of course the only things trump ever did were horrible.
While the title of the segment is indirectly factual, it undermines the reality that Obama would have let it happen had the public not gotten involved. It's a dig on Trump, i get it. Y'all are better than that.
Another great step back to freedom and a level playing field!

Biden:+1
You mean +1 for causing massive inflation with continuous deficit spending and shutting down domestic oil production?
@@johnward43 Yeah, the president controls inflation (hint: inflation is a worldwide problem, and the U.S. is doing better than most )... Also, U.S. oil and natural gas production is at a record high under Biden... But keep smoking that MAGAt meth, it's doing wonders for your cognitive abilities...🤡
@@johnward43 aaaahhh no Biden didn’t cause inflation, Greedy Companies did.
And BTW oil companies have plenty of land to drill from At Their Free Will but once again they WON’T… ‘WHY’ you Ask? (Even though I know you wouldn’t ask “why” cause you are dead set on blaming a current president for everything… although I’m sure Trump is innocent n has never did anything wrong in ‘Your Eyes’)
Because they are greedy and the less they drill to increase our oil production - the higher the price is (supply n demand and all) Lots of oil= lower prices n less profit. Little oil= High prices n more profit!!

But luckily we got my hero Lina Khan who is ENFORCING THE LAWS
NN has nothing to do with Anti-Trust... These are two separate issues. Take it or leave it, NN would have no bearing on two ISPs merging to make a single "all powerful" company.
Good Ol' 'Mericuh, Number One!!! Various countries around the world over the last 10 to 20 years have enacted laws declaring internet access a Human Right. So, I guess that means we will NEVER see it in America. Can't be seen to follow anyone else as an example. Sad.

Let's automate everything and skip to abundance.
Why should the Internet be universal? I don't get it. A company provides those services, not the gov. You really want the government controlling all internet ?
As long as its a democratic government? SURE. In case it wasn't obvious by the last 30 years of history, this country tends to prosper under democratic auspices, and stagnated under republicsn auspices.
Well telecom companies shouldn't be able to throttle mobile internet speeds does this apply to that as well?

wow this is a massive win!! finally some good news!!!
"So broadband internet providers cannot slow down or throttle internet speed based on how much you pay."
Depends on what you mean by "you".
They can definitely provide different speed and caps based on how much *the customer* pays.
They can't provide different speed and caps to the customer based on how much *the content provider* pays.
Because net neutrality means that the internet providers can't change speed and limits based on content.
What you browse, download or upload cannot be used to decide speed or limits.
Which prevents "zero rating" and other agreements with... or threats to... content providers.
So they can provide you a faster internet speed if you pay $50 instead of $5.
But they can't give you a faster internet speed when you watch RUclips than when you browse Tiktok.
Doing so would be detrimental to smaller or newer services that don't have an agreement with your ISP. Or to services with a public stance on a subject that your ISP disagrees with.
Why is this genicide supporter still on TYT?!? Im coming to cancel my subscription if he comes back again
Because even if you disagree with him... and I'm sure the majority of us disagree with him, it's still good to be able to hear from someone with a different opinion whom you normally agree with.

Good.
In order to get high speed where I live it's not cheap! I pay around $150 a month. There are few ISPs in my area. And this one is the *cheapest* !
Funny, cause despite what the hosts would lead you to believe, Net Neutrality has no bearing on marketplace competition between ISPs. If/Wen they roll this back (and I hope they do because the Internet should be open and unrestricted for consumers) it won't magically make it more desirable for an outside company or new start up to come to your town and build a completely new network in the HOPES of pealing a few subscribers away from the incumbent(s). It just doesn't make dollars and cents to drop that kind of money up front to grab a small number of subscribers
Well thats not good. We beat em once but we can't muster public opinion if they put it on the docket every time.
This is great, however - there are other things more concerning than this that ISPs can do. I don't know how it works country to country, but before you are even given the service from the ISP (country dependent and this is true for me) you might be required to wave certain rights as consumers around the product being offered (i.e) what the consumer laws entitle you to in terms of advertised products claims and their responsibility to provide it.
This is interesting. Legitimately, because I've worked for a large (US based) ISP for 20+ years and I've never heard of such a thing. What rights were you made to wave before you received service? What Country are you in?
@@mackobun It's the Customer Service Guarantee, a part of Australian law.
This is more down to how it is given to you verbally over a pre-recorded ToS prompt you need to go through and not really what it does (or not) if you wave it. Pretty much if they can get you to verbally agree to something, it will always have the potential to have you give up something that could protect you if something goes wrong (etc).

You could have googled it quicker than making that comment. But I'll google it for you and paste the answer here:
Net neutrality is the concept that states that organizations, such as Internet service providers, should treat all data on the internet equally. Proponents argue it promotes a free and open internet, where users can access content without restriction, provided the content does not violate any laws.
Another search result:
Net neutrality is the concept of an open, equal internet for everyone, regardless of device, application or platform used and content consumed. Proponents of the idea believe all corporations, including internet service providers (ISPs), should treat internet data and users equally.
short answer, net neutrality keeps us from being screwed over by companies.
So if Internet/Broadband are required to live in this world why did they not extend funding for ACP Affordable Connectivity Program?
Everyone who were able to get broadband due to ACP now will no longer have it covered anymore. Its also removed funding for expanding broadband to all areas including rural areas.
