    I started wiping the rim and inside of the cap of my ink bottles with a moist tissue before closing them back up. Never had an issue with mould, crust or caps getting stuck since. Before that I had two bottles of Herbin ink that seemed to have a split personality disorder, because they thought they were petri dishes. But since I started wiping my bottles, I bought a 100mL bottle of the same ink and it's still pristine after opening and closing it dozens of times over a couple years.

    I have this pen. Was a disaster from the start. First one I got had baby bottom. Vendor sent me another- with Tine issues. Sent it to Mark Bacas and he was able to see that the tines were misaligned. He fixed it and the vendor picked up the tab ( they initially told me it was fine. ) It writes wonderfully now. Mark is very talented- believe it or not the same pen rolled off my desk and I damaged the tines. Mark fixed it and it is again a wonderful pen. He has done an architect grind for me on another pen- amazing. It is terrible that a pen at this price point would have QC problems but my understanding is that this is a common problem with Visconti. Hence, no more Viscontis for me. I have to be honest and say every time I use the pen I have PTND- post traumatic nib disorder flashbacks.

      I love this one now that is working great, but I've been gun shy to spend significant money on their pens again. The cap band on my Rembrandt fell off too! I fixed it, but should have been done right at the start. For the price they are asking, there should be near zero issues (other than the extremely rare human error which can never be 100% eliminated).

    I also bought a new nib for my TWSBI vac 700 from him because my daughter mixed up some torn down pen pieces we had and mix them all together and I accidentally tried to put my TWSBI nib into the collar with the feed from my wife’s pen and it got stuck to the point where there was no getting it out so I ordered a new nib unit from Mark and had him grind it into an architect and I absolutely love it. He did an amazing job and was super forward with just communicating everything with you so if anybody reading the comments has been wanting to get a grind Mark Baccas is an amazing nib Meister

    11:50 Ahh, what a beautiful Elite 95s. I’ve seen this one before. Possibly in one of your other vods? 🤔 I can’t remember. But I’ve seen this one before. I remember really liking that pen’s look right off. The design on the pen and then pen itself. Many Moons later I finally bought myself one of my own Elite 95s’. It’s a modern one. The champagne and burgundy layout.I really like this too. And I bought it from a Japanese seller so I actually got my hands on one that says, “ Elite,” on it that are made for the Japanese market, instead of the “E” that are made for the western marked. Beautiful 14k fine nib. I originally bought it in Medium. I wanted a smooth writer. But everything in me said, “No, no, no! Order the fine!” So I did. Lol. And I’m not sorry. I’m sure I would have enjoyed that as well, but I wanted the bounce of a fine gold nib. If it was going to give it to me. I never held one let alone wrote with one. But after reading what others had to say about it, I was glad I listened to my gut. This Pilots nib is or can write with a bit broader stroke. Depending on the ink. With Pilot ink it stays more true to Fine. But still is a little broader than fine. Can’t wait to see what it does when I put a wetter ink in it, like Platinum Carbon Black! Whoah haaaooo.
    I’m looking forward to enjoying this pen.

    I totally feel you about having to use fountain pens on cheap crappy paper. Since I discovered fountain pens I try to use them exclusively. If I forget one at the house and I have to sign some thing I’ll use a rollerball or ballpoint but I try and keep at least one pen on me at all times because I just love using my fountain pens. My job which I have to do a lot of writing buys the cheapest crappiest paper so I started buying my own paper so I can use my fountain pens at work

Also my xf Kaweco Lilliput with Montblanc Permanent Blue ink has proven surprisingly compatible with cheap paper, been putting it to a lot of good use at the office

    What a great story! I own an original issue 2011 HS Medium which I've attempted to tune. Writing with the upper side of the nib now gives a smooth, usable and finer line, while the 'normal' side remains wonderfully SMOOTH but normally wet... I agree the job is well beyond me to reduce line width and flow... Even though I've tuned a number of "51"s, lightly smoothed Conway Stewarts and Swans, I'm in Australia and I don't think we even have NibMasters here... so will check out Mark's services because the before/ after difference he's made to your HS is absolutely superb :-) Happy Writing, the HS has lot's going for it...

If you're going to share the video(s) of him working on the nib, I'd definitely want to check that. I'd also like to see how the HS cleans in the ultrasonic cleaner. You’ve given me hope for repairing my H S Demo Sapphire. Got it from Goldspot last year at Christmas sale but am wondering if that’s why it was $475. 🤔 The nib is a bit scratchy and skips-even when the knob is screwed totally open on Rhoda and Claire Fontaine. I’ve relegated it to my pen case, and gone back to my Pilot 823 and Opus 88 Pens, both of which have no problem writing smoothly and consistently for hours. I’m going to look into taking it to the NY pen hospital since I work in Manhattan. I hope they’re as good as Mark. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have a reason to get a Bronze Age😉. I can typically get a good fill, but cleaning it out is a challenge (and that is being polite.) I bought mine at a pen show and had the nib ground before I left. It made a firehose look like a trickle. (No one at the show, including Coles had a smaller size nib ,so the vendor offered to pay for the nib reduction) Thanks for the detailed reviews!

Unfortunately, I bought my Visconti Bronze Age and Medici pens too soon; both have palladium nibs and I find their writing qualities inferior to both steel and gold.

    the only pens that I can use safely on cheap A4 print paper without any bleeding are the Sailor 1911s and Platinum 3776 which both in reality are extra fines.
    Visconti HS BA is ridiculously expensive for what it offers (I don't care owing big brands products just per se). On the contrary, I would gladly pay the same price for a Sailor KOP or a Pilot Custom Urushi.
    I hope you get what I mean.

    • @Doodlebud

      I've had my eyes on a KOP. There's no way I'd pay full price for a HS, hence the deal. The extra $50 for the grind still saved me 50% off full retail. So crazy at that price you have to be worried if you'll get a bumb nib. Love the looks of Visconti pens, but they do need to up their game with final approvals on designs & their process with nibs. If you're gonna charge premium money, it can't just look pretty. I bet a Visconti/Lamy collab pen would be EPIC! All the cool design from Visconti, but then mastery with design scrutiny & manufacturing.

  • @alternativerohde

    I have 3 Van Goghs, 2 Rembrandts, 1 Michelangelo, 1 Pericle, and a Homo Sapiens Lava Color Tuff Sandstorm. I love all the nibs on them and have never had issues. The 14K HS medium nib is very smooth, as are the steel nibs. I do think that the nibs run a half step or so larger on my fine steel nibs.
    I am so glad you did not fill your pen with Fireopal. I thought that was going to be the perfect ink for my HS. Instead it crusted just like it did in your bottle - except it happened while inside my pen! 😱 The crusted ink stained the section. I even sent it to Coles of London and they were unable to remove all the stains.
    I’m very disappointed with Monteverde ink, though to this disaster point, I’d never had trouble with their inks. Now, they all seem to crust over in many of my pens. I’m very gun shy about using their inks anymore. I wonder if they would pay for a new HS! 🤪

      Only have 2 visconti pens so far. The HS and a Rembrandt where the cap band fell off 🤣. They are beautiful & lovely pens. The steel nib is fantastic on the Rembrandt. Just think a bit of a level up on their assembly & QC process and they could flush out their quality issues which seem to creap up bit more than other large manufacturers. I always think of a Visconti/Lamy colab pen would be the top of the hill for a pen

    • @alternativerohde
      @alternativerohde 2 года назад +2

      @@Doodlebud I definitely agree that the QC issue haunt this brand, and this should not happen at the price point of most of their pens, though I do think it has gotten better. Though the damage is already done. It will be some time before they will be able to persuade people who are new or have had bad experiences to buy their pens. Thankfully I got into the brand before being scared away. And thankfully I’ve not had issues. Overall in my life I’m trying to be more positive as I was born a pessimist. I’m always one to comment my good experience with pens only because the complaints usually get the most airtime. That LAMY Visconti pen would be sick! Maybe a Pilot Visconti colab. Orange inks have a tendency to get what Goulet Pens has been calling "crustaceans" (exactly like what the bottle you showed had. 😁) Some properties of the dyes. Harmless, and can be just reconstituted. J Herbin also is more likely to get moldy, thanks to France banning the fungicides that were effective and still used in other inks.
    Great to see you were able to get the pen behaving like you wanted! That's an advantage of stationery stores in the past. Pens tended to not leave them until the customer was pleased with how they wrote, generally with no additional charge, unless you wanted something that wasn't offered by the brand. One of the "joys" of everything basically being online today...

It's been almost exclusively eBay and their series of photos taken with potatoes, and dealers that either don't have a clue what they are selling, or rampant misrepresentation.
      My focus is on vintage, as they tend to be more affordable for my limited disability income, and I've dealt with hidden damage, misrepresentation of the nib, etc. But then there are those who restore my faith in humanity. • @paulherman5822

      @kart182 Fungicides in general are toxic to some level. An example was phenol. Used in inks for almost 100 years in the US, but banned as toxic today (ever used, say, "with Solv-X" era Parker Quink? Was the distinctive smell that old timers associated with "proper ink.") Yet phenol is still used in Chloraseptic throat spray, last I knew. So, levels. France banned many things that were really not toxic at the level used. Kind of like the California "known to cause cancer" laws.

    Fire opal is NOTORIOUS for that crusty crap. I had a bottle I thought might have mold in it because they’re also known to get mold and I put it up for like two or three months to see if anything grew on it and it turned out to be OK but it certainly would get gunky and when I use it, depending on the nib that it’s in, you’ll get a lot of nib creep and barnacles to. Still a nice ink though. Idk if I’d use it in a Visconti homo-Sapien though but I can’t afford one anyway.

    In the near future when I can afford it, I will definitely need the help of Mark. I need work on two Bock nibs that I bought with my Énsso. They are nails and I cannot get the tines apart. The tines are jammed tight together. And they are thick nibs. I can’t seem to get a grip on each tine ti hold them apart. My The Good Blue flex Nib nib tips are so pressured together idk what I can so. None of the tricks of holding the tines apart work. Both sides of the tines leave a pretty good gap but the tips are so pressured together the minute you move the tines the tips flip over each other and the tines cross bad. I again don’t know what I can do. I’m going to do what you suggested for that one though.
    I really want to be able ti so a lot of this stuff on my own because I am on disability fir my back and some health issues, so I can’t afford sending pens out for these things. So unfortunately I have several of these issues that I can’t seem to fix.
    Oh I have had a major thing happen to me from a seller on Amazon. I won’t even try to explain the mess ups, the stolen pen from my porch, etc. but they finally sent me a replacement of the pan and the gold nib that was suppose to be an Ultra extra fine nib is, well, idk what to say. Looks like someone ground the gold nib tip completely off. I am livid. Idk what is going ti happen because I ordered it through my Amazon but the seller was Amazon Japan. They still can’t tell me what the problem is. But it’s a problem. I can’t do anything about it. I’m sick over it. I have a Platinum President in Black with an 18k gold nib that looks like an old crayon tip. I’m sick over it. Idk if anyone could fix that. Help!!!

      Did you reach out to ensso after you got your pens to let them know about your nib problem? Anytime you get a pen and have issues I recommend reaching out to the retailer or site you bought it from to inform them of the problem. I haven't many issues over the years with new pens, but when I have I've let them know and any issues I've had were resolved.

    • @Soul_Watcher

      @@Doodlebud yea, I did. They didn’t get back to me other than to say I could sent it back for a refund. I wanted the pen so I just bought a second nib. Same issue. So o figured one day I could work on them myself or send them to a nib meister. The Bocks are too thick and hard for me to seem to get a grip and pull apart. Idk why. I do have carpel tunnel, so that doesn’t help. Maybe that’s the issue. The nibs are smooth. No problem there. Just too tight and there is an ink flow problem. I’m assuming it’s the tines. I could be wrong.

      That part isn't tricky but need to have a floating inner cap liner with a spring. Neither is overly difficult its the integrity of the resin used in I'm concerned about. It might crack from stress as it can't take much deformation. But I'm going to do some testing to see what I can get away with

    I really like the looks of this pen and like Visconti in general, but won't be purchasing. The grip section sucks. Most all pen manufacturers put the cap securing mechanism (clutch ring, threads, or in this case twist-lok) right where you want to hold the pen. Bad idea but it's pretty. Pilot got it right with the E-95 (Elite). Now you are designing your 3-D printed pen. Consider a very long cap with a twist-Lok up out of the way on the body.

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад

      Different strokes for different folks I guess. The feature on the body doesn't bother me at all. Long cap would require the "loops" to be in the middle of the body and not too sure how visually appealing that would be. The other way is having the threads way up front like on Franklin Christophe pens
