I love the double-broad Homo Sapiens that you guys special ordered for me (thank you!), and yeah--if the "regular" nibs (i.e. fine, medium, etc.) are wet, that double-broad is basically a paint brush. But in the best possible way! I adore the way it writes. I typically take a different "nice" pen to work with me every day, but the Homo Sapiens has found its way into my laptop bag every day since I got it. You need some sturdy paper to handle the fire hose of ink that it puts out, but it's sooooo worth it. With a nicely-shading ink in it (I've been using my beloved Noodler's Antietam), it's about the most enjoyable writing experience I've ever had. It's made out of freaking volcano!

+Nicole Look-Christensen (The Recliner Jockey) haha, I'm surprised that doesn't work! He has heard you but he hasn't really listened. No joke, the lava rock used comes from Mt. Etna in Sicily, and it is harvested from a hermit that lives inside the volcano. Visconti had to develop a special mixture of volcanic rock and resin so the pen would hold ink since it's naturally such a hygroscopic material. It's really cool! It's made of FREAKING LAVA! -Brian Goulet
This pen is making me drool. 10 years ago or so when I got into pens I thought my Lamy Studio was my wish list pen.... Still one of my favorite pens. But I somehow wound up with 7 or 8 safaris, a Metropolitan and a few Kawcos. A few other misc. But if I knew then what I know now I would have gotten one and not the others and saved for something like this. The drool on my desk right now is overflowing!
I own one of the bronze. The nub is a bit soft for me, but that is not meant to be a negative. It's due to old age and physical disability. In any case, the pen is exquisite to hold and write with. Best is, the longer you write with it, the more comfortable it is. Just a dream. If you can afford one, you will never be sorry! Do yourself -- or your better half -- a BIG favor!
Hi Brian I liked your review on visconty bronze age .I have a small handwriting so I think ef nib would be suitable. Recently I purchased a Lamy 2000 medium nib but I think that is a bit on the broader side according to my standard/estimation. I was a bit confused over pelican souveran m1000 and homosapiens bronze age. Pelican is way too expensive and its inconsistency regarding the nib size is quite disconcerting. After purchasing an expensive pen and sending it to a nib meister to get it writing is not what I wanted. If I order from you can you ship it to India. Also please explain the filling mechanism, it's a bit confusing. In Lamy 2000 we just need to unscrew and tighten the knob. In bronze age do we have to turn the knob and pull it all the way back? I didn't get it. Please reply
I really want the Dark Age version of this pen. Two questions if I may: Do you deliver to the UK? How can you check the ink level in the pen? Do you end up guessing by the number of pages you’ve written?
Hello, are these the very same nibs that Visconti used on their Opera Elements pens? I wanted to get a Cherry Juice Opera Elements pen, but I kept reading unfavourable reviews about poor ink flow. Supposedly they used a Dreamtouch nib, but maybe it's a different generation. For a pen of that price ($600), I don't feel that I should have to send it out for tweaking. Anyway, your H.S. pen writes nicely, but did you notice any trouble with ink flow, skips, etc.? Thanks.
They look similar but I'd have to confirm if they're actually the same or not. I haven't had any flow issues with the Homo Sapiens in any of the pens I've tested, if anything it's very generous and maybe too wet for some! I hear ya, pens in this price deserve to write well, we can test it for you upon purchase if you request it in your order comments -Brian
Thinking of buying the bronze. My concern is other youtube reviews that complain about various quality control issues. Have you seen this problem since you began carrying the brand? Thanks
There we some at the beginning, but Visconti has worked out and I haven't had any issues with recent productions. We can also ink up and test a nib to make sure it's up to our standards prior to shipping to you. - Colin
Yup! It's still best to try to keep it nib up when traveling, like it is with any pen. The larger size has the vacuum fill, the smaller one is a piston but won't threaten to leak much. -Brian
So I've seen your guy's beginner videos and ive never held a fountain pen before in my life but a friend of mine recommended that I should get one seeing how I enjoy writing in cursive or writing in general. I was hoping if you guys might be able to recommend a pen to someone who has large hands, writes in cursive, and is willing to put in the practice. The previous video I watched really got me interested in "flex pens" for the line variations. Thank you for these helpful informative video by the way!
Flex pens can be pretty finicky, so I'd steer clear of those to start. But if you're looking for line variation, stub nibs can achieve that without much of a headache. A large lightweight like the Conklin All American has a stub nib option. Jinhao x750 as well, but you would need to buy a stub nib to swap onto it. - Colin
@@Gouletpens Hello again Colin! I'm about to purchase my first pen right now. Seeing that its limited edition and on sale, I figured this would be a good opporutnity to have this be my first pen. Is there any difference in feel compared to the Conklin All-American? We're back today after the long holiday weekend, so your order should be processed this morning! Great call on the HS, it's one of Brian's daily carry pens. - Colin
Brian, for the Visconti Bronze Homosapiens, do you need to unscrew the back of the pen since it is a power filler (vacuum filler) in order to allow the ink to flow from the storage well to the feed when writing for a long period of time?
What lesslighter said. You'll want to unscrew the back if you write a lot, though I haven't had to do that much in my daily writing yet. The feed is pretty long and holds decent ink. -Brian

How does this compare to a wet 18K nib (e.g. M1000) in the same price range? Which of these would be a more 'smoother/ springy' writing experience (18K Gold or 23K Palladium)?
I'd say it's pretty similar. Equally wet (maybe more so with the broader nibs) and a bit more spring to it. (Comparing it to the M800 as that's what I've used, not the M1000) - Colin
It really depends on the weight of the shipment & how soon you want it. From what I've seen, around $15 seems to be the average (not expedited shipping). - Colin
I just got into fountain pens (I only have the pilot preppy) and I'm looking to buy a fountain pen that I'll use and it will last for life, but I'm a little nervous buying something so expensive. Is there anything that is similar to this in a lower price range?
The midi size is a little bit longer than the M600. A bit wider as well. Maxi is a bit bigger than the M800. You can compare the different sizes on our Pen Plaza (www.gouletpens.com/pen-plaza) so you find one that fits what you're looking for. - Colin
Goulet friends need help here to decide btw the homosapien bronze and the new limited edition chiantishire, hope i spelled it right. Btw the two, which one would brian/Colin or Drew pull the trigger on?😀 Many thanks👍
It will most likely absorb ink when on the section, best recommendation is using a Visconti travel ink pot or wipe with a wet cloth after each filling to ensure it won't stain
I think the design is awesome & unique. Love the faceted look, but seems a bit on the higher end at $300 with the steel nib & cartridge/converter. Kind of in the grey area of Visconti price ranges (Same with the Vertigo). I'd go with a Rembrandt/Van Gogh ahead of it for less. - Colin
Most devices with that kind of "threads" call them "bayonet" connections. Never seen them in a pen though (but not that I've been watching that long). Usually find them in newer prescription bottles and RF quick-disconnect connectors.
Not that I'm aware of. Though wedo sell their steel nib units if you have one of the steel-nibbed Viscontis (Rembrandt, Van Gogh). It may be worth reaching out directly to Visconti if they offer anything for the more expensive models. - Colin
Hello geologist here. It will be heavier than granite as basalt is a more dense rock. Just figured Bryan would appreciate the info. Hoping this pen is available for a few more years as I am hoping to attain a PhD in petrology and would love this pen as a graduation gift.

@@Gouletpens Thanks for your answer! Both models likes me and want a next level pen, I have a Lamy 2000 but I want a finest and elegant model, could you give me another recomendations in this Kind of prices?
The Aurora Optima is a great option as well, it ticks a lot of the boxes one might want in a pen of this price range (gold nib, beautiful material, piston filler). Beyond that, Pelikan M800/M1000 are classics that have stood the test of time. There's also Namiki which can run higher in price, but the quality and craftsmanship is elite. Any of these 5 though are fantastic options and would be a good step from the LAMY 2000 (my personal favorite) - Colin
Both the Midi & Steel Age have been discontinued by Visconti a few years back. Here is the current products available: www.gouletpens.com/collections/visconti-homo-sapiens-fountain-pens - Colin

Can someone please answer me if I am actually able to write with the EF nib in a high angle? Something like 75º or 80º between the pen and the paper. Thank you.
Just tried that writing angle with the EF Homo Sapiens. It writes just fine, but I do think you get a bit more feedback from that angle. Ink flows a little dry as well, but overall still a good writing experience. - Colin

Yep, that's Rhodia paper, great option for fountain pens. I've heard good things about Fabriano but haven't tried it myself. - Colin
I just got into fountain pens (I only have the pilot preppy) and I'm looking to buy a fountain pen that I'll use and it will last for life, but I'm a little nervous buying something so expensive. Is there anything that is similar to this in a lower price range?
Can't go wrong with a pilot metropolitan
The case in which my Dark Age came does not have the little drawer in the case. It appears Visconti made a change in the design.
Are Visconti pens outfitted with nib units like Pelikan where it's all one unit or a nib and feed that come out separately?
+The Goulet Pen Company I'm thinking of my older Visconti Opera Black. Maybe the same setup exists with the older pens....
+Parsa Shamloo I'm not sure -Brian
How are the different sizes comparable with Pelikan fountain pens? Is the midi size as big as a M400, M600 or M800 and what about the large size?
The midi size is a little bit longer than the M600. A bit wider as well. Maxi is a bit bigger than the M800. You can compare the different sizes on our Pen Plaza (www.gouletpens.com/pen-plaza) so you find one that fits what you're looking for. - Colin
Thanks for the answer and the very interesting link! :)
have you tried this pen with the viscouti travelling inkwell? I imagine the capacity is greater filling it with the traveling inkwell.
+Michael Quigley I have! It works great, it's the easiest way to get a full filling on the HS -Brian Goulet
Do they feel anything like frosted glass?
do you know when the prototype ink window homosapien will available?
Goulet friends need help here to decide btw the homosapien bronze and the new limited edition chiantishire, hope i spelled it right. Btw the two, which one would brian/Colin or Drew pull the trigger on?😀
Many thanks👍
That's tough! I love the demonstrator appeal of the Chiantishire, but the red doesn't do it for me. So I would side with the Bronze Age HS. - Colin
Have you noticed any issues with the hygroscopic material absorbing and staining the section? If so, how do I avoid it?
It will most likely absorb ink when on the section, best recommendation is using a Visconti travel ink pot or wipe with a wet cloth after each filling to ensure it won't stain
I'm new to fountain pens and I'm very interested in demonstrator pens! Any ideas on brands pens or places I can search for just that style?
Check out TWSBI, they have several affordable demo pens like the Eco, Mini, and 580. -Brian
+The Goulet Pen Company thank you! I really enjoy all your videos
How do you feel about the Visconti Pentagon?
I think the design is awesome & unique. Love the faceted look, but seems a bit on the higher end at $300 with the steel nib & cartridge/converter. Kind of in the grey area of Visconti price ranges (Same with the Vertigo). I'd go with a Rembrandt/Van Gogh ahead of it for less. - Colin
Are sheaffer pens any good they r cheap for high end pens but I dunno if to trust them
+Hovis Mills They're definitely nice writing pens! -Margaret
+The Goulet Pen Company thanks, I always wanted a nice fountain pen but most are very expensive, I usually use cross
Nice video, but you should consider Graf von Faber-Castell and Faber-Castell pens, the former being excellent.
I love those chunky threads they use. Why does nobody else do that? It wouldn't be hard to make ;_;
+u_dun_goofed Patents
+Harry Armitage Aha, but China has a good answer to that!
Most devices with that kind of "threads" call them "bayonet" connections. Never seen them in a pen though (but not that I've been watching that long). Usually find them in newer prescription bottles and RF quick-disconnect connectors.
Do we get to keep the viscounti logo medal if we buy a mypen jewel ? Or do we just get the jewel itself without the original one ?
You'll also get the original one if you order a mypen jewel as well. - Colin
Katalavaino i'm pretty sure that in one of the reviews I heard about a nib exchange program through Visconti.
Does Visconti offer nib switches? I got a medium that I would love switch out for a fine.
Not that I'm aware of. Though wedo sell their steel nib units if you have one of the steel-nibbed Viscontis (Rembrandt, Van Gogh). It may be worth reaching out directly to Visconti if they offer anything for the more expensive models. - Colin
Does Goulet not sell the midi anymore? I can't seem to find it on the site.
It was recently discontinued by Visconti! - Colin
@@Gouletpens Oh well. Not like I could afford it anyway
Hello geologist here. It will be heavier than granite as basalt is a more dense rock. Just figured Bryan would appreciate the info. Hoping this pen is available for a few more years as I am hoping to attain a PhD in petrology and would love this pen as a graduation gift.
+Sam Louderback That's some great information to know. This pen should be around for a while and would make an excellent gift. Best of luck! - Colin
Unless it’s got some porosity, then it could be lighter than granite :)
In your opinion which is better, visconti homo sapiens or lamy imporium, you Dont have a review of this pen yet
I prefer the writing experience from the LAMY gold nibs over the Visconti nibs, but I prefer the design and aesthetic on the Homo Sapiens more. It depends on which is more important to you. - Colin
@@Gouletpens ok! Thank you!!
How do you clean this pen. That is my only fear.
Did they drop the steel age? I can't find it on the site
Yeah, that was discontinued by Visconti in early 2017. - Colin
@@Gouletpens Welp. At least the Dark Age looks cool.
Can i buy the midi silver one from goulet?
Both the Midi & Steel Age have been discontinued by Visconti a few years back. Here is the current products available: www.gouletpens.com/collections/visconti-homo-sapiens-fountain-pens - Colin
Thanks
Does anyone know what shirt he is wearing. I love the color.
Not sure of where the shirt is from, sorry about that! -Margaret
I’m from India. I don’t have much knowledge of fountain pen. I use only Lamy, I have Lamy safari and 2000. Please suggest me a pen which is better than 2000 . I am extremely happy with 2000. Can I be happier with anything else?
Can someone please answer me if I am actually able to write with the EF nib in a high angle? Something like 75º or 80º between the pen and the paper. Thank you.
Just tried that writing angle with the EF Homo Sapiens. It writes just fine, but I do think you get a bit more feedback from that angle. Ink flows a little dry as well, but overall still a good writing experience. - Colin
@@Gouletpens I really apreciate that you took your time to answer me. I actually like this kind of feedback, so it might turns out to be my next pen and the first from Goulet Pens ;)
I thought I had all of my grail pens when I collected the Pilot Custom 823, the Lamy 2000, and the Wetlands Cypress Pen.
Then I had to see this one.
I have 3 of the regular size pens, 2 F size, 1 EF size, going to hunt for another EF size. This pen is that good. :)
Can I have one lol!
Are there pens for school students
Here are some great options to check out: blog.gouletpens.com/2018/08/top-10-back-to-school-must-haves-for-fountain-pen-fans -Lydia
is it a double reservoir power filler
This particular model is just a single reservoir power filler, but we did just launch the Homo Sapiens London Fog (www.gouletpens.com/visconti-homo-sapiens/c/381/?sortBy=productName+asc&facetValueFilter=Tenant~Body_Color%3Ablue) that is a double reservoir. - Colin
Do you guys ship to India ?
Yes we do! You can read more about our international shipping options on our FAQs: www.gouletpens.com/faq?tabNo=1 - Colin
What's the other pen in 17:24?
It's kind of hard to tell, but pretty certain that's the Edison Collier in Antique Marble (www.gouletpens.com/edison-collier-antique-marble-fountain-pen/p/ED-Collier-AntiqueMarble). - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company thank you 😊😊😊
Me: oh my god I have naturally sweaty palms I need this pen *sees price* on second thought what was that other material you mentioned with similar qualities, I’ll get back to this later
Love mine...
can you branch of to a UK website
+largee 151 Don't have a UK website, but we can ship to the UK! -Margaret
+ The GouletPen Company
I think imma ask for this pen for Christmas, and pay for half, to 3/4 of it, and have it be the ly thing I get
Hey....wait a second...am I seeing FLEX in the writing sample!?
dude my countertops are made from basaltic lava ahaha
Weird flex but ok
Yeah, but can you write with your countertop?
This pen looks so nice, but it's really expensive.
I need this pen now guess I'm gunna sell a few organs and books and all of my furniture....it'll be worth it!!!
+Syd leigh This is a lot of peoples "holy grail" pen so you're not alone. But that's what wishlists are for! Mine is filled with so many pens... - Colin
Mines all find with ink and 2 pens now
I cannot persuade myself why I need a pen that is more expensive than my Pelikan m1000, the m1000 is already the furthest expense I can go.

I'm not sold on fountain pens it's touch and go meaning it could write great or it could write terrible and for the price on these pens it would be insanity to have such an expensive pen that does not write to your liking .
**swoon**
+Tyler Ocon Seriously :) I mean... VOLCANO! -Margaret
For the price, the fit and finish of this pen actually looks kinda terrible. Take, for instance, the logo on the pen clip? Was it spray painted on?
Am I the only one that finds this pen incredibly ugly?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A pen made from a volcano is pretty interesting regardless! - Colin
yes, out of the 7.1 billion people on earth, you are the only one
Not ugly at all! It is very beautiful in my eyes. :)
Joshua Nolan so many pans are near clones of each other. This pen I find extremely beautiful personally. I do however have an affinity towards the rustic. Antiqued leather, I have such I think are fantastic, this will fit right in
7.2 ;}
A lot of people seem to have more money than they know what to do with. Lava? Are you serious? Manufactured in some villa someplace? Includes an advertising folder? Dear heaven. OK I do have a Montblanc 149 (which is one reason I don't need a ridiculous pen made of lava) so I'm not against expensive pens. And it's your money. Enjoy.
I've always been a fan of Visconti but, I'm sorry this is one UNATTRACTIVE pen!
organic pen when it is made out of rock???
It's made out of lava! -Margaret
