At this point in the series most people dislike Sawyer and Jin intensely. Their selfish and controlling behavior are off putting for most folks and make them completely unsympathetic. In normal life, you'd choose to avoid them and they would go on their merry way unchallenged. On the island, you're forced to interact to some degree. Does the interaction and challenge to their behavior change their behavior? As John said, everyone has a choice to do the right thing. Charlie isn't the only "moth" on the island that needs this struggle to be a better person.
I'll show these fellow commenters how to say how I feel about Sawyer without spoilers. Everyone talking about future episodes and whatnot. SMH. Sawyer is, as he said, a complex guy. We're only 8 episodes in and he speaks true. He seems willing to help, but at the same time is not always willing to do the right thing. Random examples, he joined the exploring group in episode 1 to try and help. He protected the group by shooting a polar bear. He went to tell Kate about Jack being stuck in a cave. He (apparently) helped set off the bottle rocket to help Sayid. But, he also hordes everything he can. He forces people to come to him if something is needed. He can be rude. He calls people names. I just realized that he is actually helping everyone else by scavenging and hording everything from the plane wreckage. It's pretty obvious that nobody was going to do it. Jack was, but he was looking for specific items that could help himself as a doctor. Sawyer is collecting as much stuff as possible. And while he's not always willing to part with these items without argument, he's at least got it. It's there, and not burned in the wreckage. He lost his parents to a con man and has become one himself while trying to hunt down the man that wrecked his life. We see in his flashback that he sees himself in the little boy of the parents he was about to con. He actually walks away and leaves the money, knowing that his partner will be trying to kill him. It seems that Sawyer is capable of doing what's right, but it's got to fit in his own agenda or world view. So, as another person, you'd never know if you're going to get asshole Sawyer or helpful Sawyer. Just as an example in episode 7, instead of telling Charlie that he'll go find and tell Kate, he could've easily told Charlie to piss off. There's something in him that wants to help, wants to be good, wants to be liked. I think he's full of anger and rage. He's been holding onto his grief his whole life (literally holding onto it, with his letter). It'll be interesting to see where the writers take him. As of now, I can see potential in Sawyer, as long as he doesn't lean hard to the asshole side of his character. I'm not ready to write him off just yet.

If you haven't watched (or reacted) to Netflix's show DARK, you might want to consider it. The German show (with either subtitles or English dubbing) is like the love child of LOST, Stranger Things, The Missing (U.K.) and a tiny sprinkle of Twin Peaks.

Sawyer is definitely my favorite. All he really did was gather supplies on his own and mind his own business. But they just couldn't leave him alone. They keep coming to him. How many times was he physically attacked an accused of doing something for no reason? The perspective tries to paint him in a bad light. Jack and his cohorts constantly cross boundaries an are authoritarian jerks. Trying to tell random people what to do and how to live. They also steals from sawyer a lot too.
The more you get emotionally invested, the better LOST is. That goes for both positive and negative emotions. Usually it is Jin though who gets the early hate on the island. Sawyer has always been a favorite among the ladies. Not here it seems. LOL
Sawyers arch definitely takes some time on first watch for some, but doesn't usually see hate thiss deep hahah but hopefully over time she realizes flaws and brokenness are a common theme, but people have many sides to them and people grow!

You're not supposed to like Sawyer much right now, it's how he's been written. Maybe pity him a little over what little has been revealed about his back story, so the Mrs. is possibly a bit more triggered by him than most but I think women in particular find him offensive at this point because of how he turned his situation around into getting a kiss from Kate. But yeah, Sawyer is the show's Han Solo, hard not to love him he's definitely up there in the top two or three of my favorites.
John is my fav as well! So many angles to characters but love to see people's perspectives! I think peoples lists fluctuate but the cream of the crop tend to find there way back to the top:)

Sawyer ultimately becomes every ones favorite. I think by the end of the first or second episode we knew he would be the redemption story and jack would be the fall story, just the way storytelling goes time and again lol
On point. Sawyer is a selfish based character that dwells in victimhood. He's a taker not a giver. This guy gets so many passes for doing these types of selfish acts. Crazy is, crazy does. I guess if you are handsome with dimples he often gets a get out of jail card for many of these acts. He's nothing more then a sympathetic romantic trope.
I wouldn't even need knowledge from future episodes to put Sawyer in my top 5 at this point in the story. Ever since the beginning, I've always found him to be a very fun and interesting wild card to have in the mix. My love only deeped from there. Josh Holloway's charismatic performance doesn't hurt either.
If you end up watching the entire series this might be the first time I actually finish it. I always get to season 4 and have a break and never come back. I swear I’ve seen the first 3 seasons 4 or 5 times. Love seeing your reactions!

I've seen so many Lost reactions where people, especially women start off hating Sawyer and Jin(not without good reason) and end up at least liking them by the end of season 1.

Great reaction, The Moth is one of my favorite episodes, Charlies and Locke were captivating in every scene together and then when Charlie throws the drugs in the fire and then sees the Moth flying the look on his face is just so pure, Now On SAWYER at this point i didn't like hime at all, I thought it was a good twist that the kid in the letter was him though
The clothing is actually a cultural thing. South Korea is still Super conservative. Most women are looked down upon if they show their shoulders or cleavage. Look at any KPop idols. Only the solo ones or ones who are marketed as sexy show cleavage. But ironically, booty shorts/tiny mini skirts are fine. And being possessive is also, sadly, a thing. It's getting better, but there is still a cultural mentality of the woman doing and listening to what the man says.
You hate Sawyer...until you don't. He's one of those people that you really have to chip away at, over time, before you can see the good that's within.

I realize they watched the entire series by this point, looking forward to how you guys view the same characters by the end. I don't remember hating Sawyer, I do remember thinking John Locke is 'special'. Special in the best meaning of the word, no derogatory nature intended. He seems like a guy whose been through the shit and has wisdom that is more encompassing than you'd think. Later on my opinion on him would change to add more depth, to see him as a person who does make mistakes as well. I was a child though, and I even recall not thinking it was weird when he talked 'oddly' to the kid (walt?) in previous episodes, but this time I did think it was odd and it raised red flags, even knowing exactly how this show ends. I would have thought by the time Sawyer revealed the letter and who wrote it, your wife would have changed her opinion. That's kind of the start of understanding why Sayer is how he is, but they go so much more in depth later. He did nothing wrong, and was tortured for it...stabbed in an artery...and has faced non-stop hate simply because he doesn't socialize...God damn, it kind of feels like that's exactly how life is towards those types. If you're not making an effort to be social, people will find reasons to hate you. I mean, what specifically did he do wrong other than not be Mr Nice Guy?
Just a personal observation, but, in my 70 years of experience, those who are without humor are the most uncaring, shallow, and self-centered persons you'll know in this life. Those who've learned to laugh and roll with the punches can find room in their hearts for the lowly and needy as well as the respected. Sawer knows how to laugh.

I agree with you, before the island Sawyer made bad things but fans love him. There are others characters that in the past had a better behaviour than Sawyer but are hated by fans. I hate assholes characters but Sawyer make me laugh. I dont remember, maybe at this point of the show I hated him...
I think its for copyright reasons because I've seen on a lot of reactions to LOST where they either mute it, or pitch it, so youtube probably has some limitations on that unfortunately.

I also hated Sawyer at the beginning, but he definitely grows on you. The whole show is about character development and growth. Just keep watching. The only character I hated through the entire thing was Michael.
Im with the Mrs. i hated Sawyer so much and even by the end of the show i didnt end up loving him. Locke is by far the most interesting character and hes always been my fave on this show.

Hard for me to remember specific episodes. Its been about 10 years since my last rewatch. I think as he and Jack get more interactions she will start seeing the light tho. That's when Sawyer really got to me.

I liked Sawyer from the start, I could see what the writers were doing, and I enjoyed his constant nick names for everyone. Locke was my favorite though, due to his backstory and my own life being somewhat similar and just how well written the character is. I knew I would like Michael too, since I knew the actor from the series Oz. I never really liked Jack, and later on after reading stuff about the actor, I can't really stand him. I just don't like abusive people, even if they were an alcoholic during that period of their life.

Locke's speech about the moth is one of the most interesting parts of the series.
This was the first episode I ever saw, and it was Locke's speech that actually hooked me.
Lost is my favorite show. And you 2 are letting me do my favorite thing, watch people watch lost.

I was a Jack stan but by the end I had to acknowledge that I had developed a begrudging respect for Sawyer.
I'm the opposite lol, Sawyer is my absolute favourite and I really only started to not dislike Jack towards the end

Best tv series of all time personally. Nothing else for me comes close to it. And i think youll change your mind on Sawyer, he has one of the best character growths.

I've seen so many Lost reactions where people, especially women start off hating Sawyer and Jin(not without good reason) and end up at least liking them by the end of season 1.
I've just found yall so I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but you mentioned how Locke is always saying some philosophical shit, so I should say that he was actually named after the philosopher John Locke. 😅

Sawyer ist a great character and I like him. I don't love him but he is in my Top 10 characters. Sounds not good but Lost has so many awesome characters around.^^
Great reaction, The Moth is one of my favorite episodes, Charlies and Locke were captivating in every scene together and then when Charlie throws the drugs in the fire and then sees the Moth flying the look on his face is just so pure, Now On SAWYER at this point i didn't like hime at all, I thought it was a good twist that the kid in the letter was him though
The clothing is actually a cultural thing. South Korea is still Super conservative. Most women are looked down upon if they show their shoulders or cleavage. Look at any KPop idols. Only the solo ones or ones who are marketed as sexy show cleavage. But ironically, booty shorts/tiny mini skirts are fine.
And being possessive is also, sadly, a thing. It's getting better, but there is still a cultural mentality of the woman doing and listening to what the man says.
You hate Sawyer...until you don't. He's one of those people that you really have to chip away at, over time, before you can see the good that's within.

I don't remember hating Sawyer, I do remember thinking John Locke is 'special'. Special in the best meaning of the word, no derogatory nature intended. He seems like a guy whose been through the shit and has wisdom that is more encompassing than you'd think.
Later on my opinion on him would change to add more depth, to see him as a person who does make mistakes as well. I was a child though, and I even recall not thinking it was weird when he talked 'oddly' to the kid (walt?) in previous episodes, but this time I did think it was odd and it raised red flags, even knowing exactly how this show ends.
I would have thought by the time Sawyer revealed the letter and who wrote it, your wife would have changed her opinion. That's kind of the start of understanding why Sayer is how he is, but they go so much more in depth later.
He did nothing wrong, and was tortured for it...stabbed in an artery...and has faced non-stop hate simply because he doesn't socialize...God damn, it kind of feels like that's exactly how life is towards those types. If you're not making an effort to be social, people will find reasons to hate you. I mean, what specifically did he do wrong other than not be Mr Nice Guy?
I also hated Sawyer with a passion on my first watch. It took me until about season 4 or 5 to like him. I didn't love him until my second rewatch.
Just a personal observation, but, in my 70 years of experience, those who are without humor are the most uncaring, shallow, and self-centered persons you'll know in this life. Those who've learned to laugh and roll with the punches can find room in their hearts for the lowly and needy as well as the respected.

I agree with you, before the island Sawyer made bad things but fans love him. There are others characters that in the past had a better behaviour than Sawyer but are hated by fans.
I hate assholes characters but Sawyer make me laugh. I dont remember, maybe at this point of the show I hated him...

I think its for copyright reasons because I've seen on a lot of reactions to LOST where they either mute it, or pitch it, so youtube probably has some limitations on that unfortunately.

I also hated Sawyer at the beginning, but he definitely grows on you. The whole show is about character development and growth. Just keep watching. The only character I hated through the entire thing was Michael.
I definitely didn't hate him the entire show. That's all I say.
Im with the Mrs. i hated Sawyer so much and even by the end of the show i didnt end up loving him. Locke is by far the most interesting character and hes always been my fave on this show.
Everyone hates Sawyer until they love him. It's as true as death and taxes.

Hard for me to remember specific episodes. Its been about 10 years since my last rewatch. I think as he and Jack get more interactions she will start seeing the light tho. That's when Sawyer really got to me.

I liked Sawyer from the start, I could see what the writers were doing, and I enjoyed his constant nick names for everyone. Locke was my favorite though, due to his backstory and my own life being somewhat similar and just how well written the character is. I knew I would like Michael too, since I knew the actor from the series Oz. I never really liked Jack, and later on after reading stuff about the actor, I can't really stand him. I just don't like abusive people, even if they were an alcoholic during that period of their life.
