Not until a DNA project that included my family was it discovered we are Romani. The last few years have traced the move from England to the USA and the names of the immigrant family members. I know little to nothing about them. I just look in the mirror though and see the truth of my ancestry. The eyes especially. Maybe my heart as well.

Never had a good or at least positive experience with any Roma and I have encountered them in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary and the former USSR. They are uniquely able to make themselves hated anywhere they go. Roma apologists generally have never had to live or work around them. I lost all hope for these people when I watched them prostitute their prepubescent girls (and boys) to tourists in Constanta, Romania. Stereotypes do not arise spontaneously or with out reason. Furthermore, something isn't a stereotype if it is true, which is the case with most descriptions of Roma behaviour.

It is very mystical and the reason they don’t have written history is cause they believe it should be passed down orally. They have a long tradition of story telling. They also don’t want non Romani people to learn about it. It’s secret and hidden for a reason. They are very wise people.

Theirs is truly a culture that must be preserved and celebrated. Unfortunately, they also suffered in India.
The European Roma are probably the descendants of Dalits, the untouchables who are at the lowest level of the Indian caste system, who left the Indian subcontinent approximately 1,000 years ago, an Indian-Estonian international study revealed.
The authors compared the DNA samples of European Roma men and thousands of inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent. More than 10,000 biological samples from 214 different ethnic groups were examined. The greatest similarity was found in DNA samples collected among members of the lowest caste, the untouchables, who live in some areas of northwest India.
Although the caste system was officially abolished in India, it still remains in many places. An estimated 160 million people belong to the Dalit caste. Untouchables are not allowed to enter temples, the houses of higher caste persons and can only do the menial jobs.
Researchers believe that the ancestors of the European Roma migrated west to take part in the war that raged in the Punjab region between 1001 and 1026. They were probably promised a higher caste if they won.

It's a funny thing how literacy levels, work culture, self segregation, complete lack of respect for the rest of society, crime levels, responsibility and many more were not mentioned or discussed... Not to mention the ability or will to talk the official language of the country they live in... Any personal responsibility is being overlooked just so you can cry "victimized"... The reason there is no water or electricity is because no one wants to pay bills... Many Gypsies were given social accomodation which they completely destroyed... Yes there is racism and it is a huge part of the problem. Is it the core of the problem? Absolutely not... Schooling is available, social help is available, free healthcare is available... Will to change and be a productive member of society is very sparsely available or non existent... I have lived with Gypsies, I have had gypsy friends, I have worked with Gypsies, I have been to gypsy weddings, I have heard the music going 24\7 for days that is so loud you can hear it from 3 blocks away with complete disregard of their neighbors, I have seen the 13 year old brides, I have seen the bride markets, I have seen the rapes, the drug and alcohol abuse, the murders... If you want to solve a problem you need to name the whole problem. Playing victim will never solve anything... Nobody can change you if you don't want to change and that's a huge deal of what is happening... I get that you want to ride the wave of what's happening in the states... It's not solving a problem that you are trying to do... There's a fantastic documentary on HBO that shows a lot of what I am talking about.
    m.imdb.com/title/tt3615116/
So please be honest to yourselves and your viewers... And on the point of "ghettos" Gypsies live in some of the best central places in many of the big cities... The reason you see them in villages with makeshift shaks is because that's where they can build illegal houses... That's the reason they don't have running water or power... So please, if you don't accept responsibility for your own life, don't cry when others don't...

hahaha...I remember this from Bulgaria. They never pay for electricity indeed, and attack bus drivers or medical staff, when they come to help them. A complete joke. No wonder no one wants to go there or deal with them anymore. It is not everybody in these ghettos of course, but the many "bad apples" ruin it for everyone. Education and work is surely not a top priority in their societies...why work when you can beg and sell your body? Or sell drugs? I was compelled to tune in to your excellent video on the Romani because I have always been called to investigate their culture, history and especially their music. I grew up in England, the North to be precise where we had many Romani folk living on the periphery of our cities. We were so used to them coming door to door selling their goods, offering to work, etc. As young children we longed to be admitted to their groups where there was often music, a fire and lots of children who always appeared to us very free to run and play at will. I longed to be one of those fortunate children. Of course, at that time we knew nothing of the discrimination towards their groups. They were never spoken of in a negative manner and my parents always welcomed them at our door selling goods and offering to work. Your expose of their struggle through the centuries was very enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

Some Romani moved en masse into our Bronx neighborhood in 1979-80. We were clueless about their culture . The girls did not go to school, but walked around barefoot and crocheted lace. There was an old man who was the boss of them all who whistled at women with their kids. The boys would start fights then run and when you chased them , 10 men would be waiting around the corner. We had some brutal gang fights . Neighborhood kids versus the Gy p sies . They started all of it.
I asked a boy i befriended to bring the daily newspaper to a housebound elderly Uncle since I got a scholarship and attended school I had to commute to. My uncle was bedridden. He let his family in and they stole every thing in the apartment but the bed he was sleeping on. They even stole his wife’s ashes. We had to fight them to get it all back.
Flash forward to living in San Francisco. My neighbor was a Flamenco dancer. She would have great Flamenco parties. If she had Romani over , she would put all her valuables in my flat.
They show up in NorCal now , begging in shopping malls with their kids. I pulled over to help a stranded driver on a busy Napa highway. I immediately recognized him as being like the guys in the Bronx. He wanted money for gas and wanted to sell me his gold jewelry. My guess is he had a box of fake gold rings and necklaces and that was his hustle. I called him on it and we both laughed as he knew his hustle was exposed. Told him to fu ck off and went on my way.
The persecution of these people is tragic but they suck to have around.

They have a hard time finding a job and that is unfortunate but they tend to be so rude in restaurants and so untrustworthy. Also exactly what you say, mess with one, you mess with 10 or more. One goes to the hospital, entire family camps there and then it becomes a real issue there.

In Portugal we had several cases of nurses and doctors stabbed by gypsies because the medical staff blocked the clan from invading ER and they just couldn't abide by a simple rule in a place where order must be kept so doctors can save lives.
In a children's hospital they forced out a child patient sharing the room with a gypsy child so the entire gypsy family had extra space to sleep in the room. The nurses found the mother of the other child desperately screaming for help trying to stop them from pushing the bed with the intubated child out of the room.
A year ago a family beat to death a 3 y-o little girl as revenge on the mother for owing them money for a witchcraft job meant to "tie" the mother's new boyfriend.
The little girl's name was Jessica Biscaia. Google it.
The type of cruel, barbaric stuff they do is beyond demonic.

Those who do not understand or even show respect, are the one's who lose so much. May we learn from past/present human wrongs and atrocities & may we allow love and peace to permeate our hearts and minds and repel all hatred and evil. For hatred and evil, makes us none the wiser and only hurts us more in the end. May we educate ourselves more and may we cease to reject, isolate, ostracise, and condemn innocent souls, for this, is the greatest of human sins/evils. May God bless the Romani peoples globally. Please know that i love you all and i carry the deepest respect for you all and i can only wish you all, much better, more respectful, more peaceful and more inclusive years ahead.

Is it that the Romani are poor bc they they refuse to work, and doing so prevents them from living the roaming lifestyle? I see in Europe how they are discriminated against BECAUSE they will not work. In Europe they don't care what you do for a living, the advanced countries value hard working people who earn an honest living.
In a country like Canada who opens their arms to refugees and Romani, gives them opportunities to work but instead they just take the free money and ask for more. They don't send their kids to school and the cycle will continue. In what country besides Canada can one have golden opportunities and do nothing with it? The Romani have learned of the naive generosity of Canadians and seeking asylum there in massive numbers. I am supportive of helping ppl better their lives but not if they can't be bothered.
Please see the video of the Romani from East & Central Europe who flock to the UK for the free handouts, and then how they spend it. It will blow your mind.
On the other hand, there are, as with other cultures, many beautiful elements to their core values. Just sad that so many choose to live the way they do then turn around and say it is everyone else's fault.

If you're writing your thesis on the subject, please make sure you base your findings on direct interviews with the actual people themselves... Not just the recent fad of vicarious outrage.
What do THEY think and why. Are THEY really more worried about "treating the word Gypsy as profanity, that people should be canceled if they've ever uttered, regardless of context?" Or the mistreatment and harmful stereotypes they've faced (regardless of what name people call them)?

In India, during my childhood, I show
Indian Roma's (called Banjara) during 1965 Around Agra (which is my birth place). They basically do not remains continiously at one place. For there livelihood they do the work of Luhar ( steelsmith). Also they do the job of circus activities. Mostly they are in northern and western India. They were a wanderer communities for years and generations. For there livelihood they have some artisan skills. Now in India these communities are almost on the verge of extinction too because of development of civilizations.. Earlier India was spread up to Iran. Being a nature of wanderer community they migrated up to Europe in earlier centuries. Where ever they go they make there tent like houses beside roads. They also have carts easily run by humans and some time by local bulls

In Hungary, where I live, there was an anti-roma protest, there was many extremist right-wing people. It was because a man tragically died because two people stabbed him, and they thought that they were romanis. It was awful, they shouted things like: “there is roma crime” and they said that we should stop roma-crime. They found out later that the two criminals wasn’t even romani, so it was purely a racist protest.
Other example: the supreme court gave financial compensation for the students in Gyöngyöspata, because they were purely segregated by their race. They got the worse teachers, they weren’t allowed to use the bathroom what the white kids used, and they were on an other floor in the school. And it was because of their race, not because of their grades, or behavior. And the PRIME MINISTER of Hungary said that its bad that they got a refund, because they didn’t deserved it. Nobody here try to uplift romanis, because yes, many of them live in a very bad situation. But how we expect them to live in a higher class when these kind of situations happening all of the time? Many hungarian think that romanis are criminals because “it’s in their blood” which is obviously ridiculous....

O.M.G. - you always called them Romani. Romani is a word which can be used only when speaking about their language, not about people. Even the Roma term is not an endonim, but an exonim, same as Gypsy. In their language, "Roma", it means just "people" while "Romani" means just "language" or "speaking".
They call themselves 'Tzigani' if you want to know, and this has no peiorative term, it is known in history for more than 3000 years, in all hystorical documents. First greek record since > 3000 years ago named them "Atzigani" because "a" meant "belong to", not "negation" in old greek, coming from Armenia, while in Armenian records they appeared just like that "Tzigani", without the "a" which was added by the ancient greeks.
Would you like to be stripped off of 3000 years of your own culture and hystory and called just "people" ?
    I don't think so.
All the "Tzigani" I personally know are amused and feel kind of cringy when they are called 'Roma'. Only some Tzigani officials try to accomodate with the new term, but they still cannot get used to it after 30-40 years of trying, the Tzigani themselves don't even try and people make a big confusion when hearing the word Roma in their songs thinking they are singing about themselves, often mourning their fate, while their message is much more generous, they are mourning people's fate in general.
The term Roma was first known when a British journalist asked a group of Tzigani from Ottoman empire what they are? And they responded "Roma" for various reasons: 1) inhabitants of former Byzantine empire , Christians were free to pass the Ottoman checkpoints and had a special status, 2) they like to joke, and possibly they were making fun of the British journalist.
Even if we would erase 3000 years of history and official documents, we would ignore how they call themselves, "tzigani" and not "people", the term "Roma" should be applied only to the British subclad of Tzigani from a particular reagion where the term was spread, which is a very small number,. This particular tiny group may still prefer this term, as they take advantage of people's ignorance the same way they did less than 30-40 years ago when, while in nordic countries, when asked they said they are greek or italians and people believed them.
Modern genetic studies discovered that these people from UK share only about 10% of their DNA with the rest of about 10-20 million of Tzigani across Europe, meaning they are not even distant cousins, but as remote genetically as E.g.: Italians and Syrians.
Adding insult to injury, you got the world record for misnominations, not only calling them "people", but calling them "language" or "speaking", all the time, often several times in the same sentence.
O.M.G. Somebody, plese report this clip to google to be removed.

I was ushered away from women wearing traditionally romani clothing by my parents, I saw the negative portrayal of romani people in the media, I listened to teachers spewing what I now recognize as blatantly racist rhetoric and when I learned about the holocaust in school, the genocide of the Sinti and Roma was only a footnote or maybe mentioned in passing.
It's mindboggling how accepted open racism against the Roma still is, even in a country that tries so hard to distance itself from its racist past
I'm only now learning more about the beautiful romani culture on my own accord after being taught my whole life that they were to be feared, and it's eye-opening....

I am VERY sure that they passed through our city as its part of the so called "Silk road" from India to Europe where many of the British used to come and go to from Britain to India and vice versa to bring teas, spices and much more.
Soo much people used to come and go on that road soo this city also is famous for its Caravan-hotels called Caravansarai, which ofcourse many Romani's used to have for transporting themselves besides horses too.
I also can understand a bit of my friends Romani language (she speaks Kalderash dialect.)
And also the physical similarities are VERY much to us Persians(from around those areas/cities especially!) Soo I am SOOO sure we share alot of DNA and that makes me REALLY proud and happy even if the entire Europe despise Romanis, I honestly I couldn't care less..

I hear you & i do agree. It's very sad & to think, that even in this day & age, there are countless, who still regard ALL Romani peoples as, thieves, thugs, losers, etc;. It's disgusting & actually, it says much more about those who speak evil against the Romani, than the Romani themselves. I have never heard a Romani person speak ill of anyone. They simply demand acknowledgement, justice, a voice, respect, equal rights & anything else, required for healthy human survival. The truth is, they're no different from any other human & we too, all expect & demand the exact same things. Please check out PP Peter's you tube video, regarding a visit he made to the Romani community in i think, Albania. It's so sad to see, that they're "denied" absolutely everything they need, to live healthy & happy lives. These needs, are not luxuries, but damn necessities! When will the wider world, start treating the Romani peoples more humanely?! And btw, please start calling Romani peoples "Gypsies"!! This term, isn't widely accepted & tolerated, by the general/wider Romani populations.

My other half was southern Italian? (which was actually greek they said??) with 3.5% of real Italian but I think that's not as accurate. My point being that I live in none of those countries, not even near, not even my grandparents were born there from both sides as far as I know unless they lied...They're dead so it's too late to ask and my parents know as little as I do.
Where I grew up, no one thought being called a gypsy or "cigan" was racist or bad even. When people called me that I didn't care unless they were fighting with me. I guess I had it good. One side of my family had deep roots in music and they still do today and they look a lot more gypsy(er) than me, that must mean I come from that side of gypsy where they mainly played music.

You know its not all that easy, we tried, Czechoslovak gave them houses for free.. and what they did with, they turned them into ruins, I am not trying to say that all romani are bad, but really, the change must come from the community, not from the governments. So maybe, just maybe the problem is ATLEAST partially on the side of roma communities, so it would be best to start from there.

Ali, thank you for this most insightful and thought-provoking video. You have done an excellent job. You have given me the impetus to find out more about the Romany people, their culture, history and social issues. People fear the unknown, therefore by knowing we can banish fear and misunderstanding.

Thank you for a great video. I have met and worked with Romani people in Europe and there are many questions that I have asked and they were not able to answer. This video brought me those answers.

Indian government should help Roman's to join the Indian mainstream and help them to get Indian citizenship

I started researching the Romani people only recently, hoping to write a character with that history, but do so with (hopefully) accuracy and respect. I can tell I have a lot to learn! 90% of the content of this video, I had no idea!

Two months of research is a good start. But this is a very deep and complex issue that spans centuries, it takes a lot more research to make a comprehensive documentary. That being said, the discrimination is appalling and good that there are advocates for the romani, and we could hear one of them.
