      I rebuild them for a living... Yeah no... Linus should never try this. Its a very tricky process that requires specialized tools and a lot of patience. Also on older ones like the CF-27 and CF-28, if you place your hand in the wrong place you can easily slice off a finger. It can take up to 3 hours to completely tear one down, normally around an hour if you're being careful. Putting one back together is even worse sometimes.

    • @sparkplug1018

      Curious what in the CF-27 and 28 is that sharp? Not doubting you, genuinely curious.

    • @MortisObscura
      @MortisObscura 6 лет назад +138

      They very thin sheets of metal in them that are razor sharp. Its probably an over exaggeration to say cut off a finger but I have had to get a finger stitched up before because the cut was fairly deep. But knowing linus, he's probably figure out a way to cut off a foot by dropping it.

    A while back Panasonic had a destroyed Toughbook on display in the lobby of their US headquarters. A police officer had it in his cruiser and some lowlife shot at him, fortunately the bullet hit the lid of the Toughbook, stopping it from hitting the officer. The Toughbook was destroyed but it likely saved the officers life. THAT'S a tough notebook!

    I've been working with the Getac Tablets in the USAF. A lot of the design behind it is pretty brilliant like having two removable batteries inside so they can be swapped individually without shutting down. The covers also have 2 locking mechanism on them so they do not fall off accidentally if dropped. the i/o ports also have little plastic doors with rubber seals and locks on them. The only thing I do not like is how they are trying to replace everything we do with these tablets and synchronising all of the software together. Keeping everything up to date is a real hassle and if one part goes the whole thing often goes to shit and we just revert back to the old way.

    I use ruggedized laptops for my work in the Air Force. The ones we use are called Technical Orders, or T.O.s for short. The ones i use are for maintaining aircraft. Think of it as a manual with hundreds of manuals inside. They're old so they're slow af but yeah they're pretty strong. We had a Little Giant latter fall on one and put a hole in the back of the screen and it still works, we just put speed tape on it (aluminum tape) and it was good as new

    • @genericyoutubename-nx5xp
      @genericyoutubename-nx5xp 6 лет назад +10

      Also ours are around $40,000 because they're encrypted

    • @Crazytomm
      @Crazytomm 6 лет назад +3

      You can encrypte a hard drive basically for free. Getac B300\F110 and Panasonic cf31 are probably around 3k each. I'm not sure about the tablets.

    • @evilbred974
      @evilbred974 6 лет назад +3

      Not proper level 1 encryption you can't. That said, $40,000 is ridiculously overpriced. There's companies that offer military encryption capable harddrives for probably closer to $2-3k

    • @Crazytomm
      @Crazytomm 6 лет назад

      Evil bred I'm unfamiliar with encryption. I just know for these tech data he uses. They are all unclassified. With the green standard strip across the top of screen. Unless your working on the air Force 1. Most computers you load standard SDC off a external drive and it basically setups windows 10 for. Im going to look into it but I never thought it was "encrypted".

    • @genericyoutubename-nx5xp
      @genericyoutubename-nx5xp 6 лет назад

      Tommy Maroney well technically some of the stuff is unclassified and yes the green strip on the top is typical. The encryption is for the e-tools application. Any T.O. you work with no matter the aircraft will have the green strip at the top. It's because it's a government computer and you can still access sites like the AF Portal and outlook

    When I was working at Dell's custom server rack solution center, we built multiple server systems for the military in these awesome special server racks. They were like 10U racks, mounted on rubber bumpers on each side which acted like shock absorbers during transport, which were then connected to the rugged plastic exterior case. Both front and back doors had hermetic seals on them to make them waterproof during transport/storage.

    apparently the ship computers were fully encased in plastic which was melted on, basically they were laminated, in order to ensure that even in the event of a hull breach they would continue to be able to function.
    of course, this was back when "processors" were a board covered in transistors rather than the tiny hot chips of today, so heat wasn't really an issue. not sure how they'd tackle that now

    Watched this from my new-to-me Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 Mk. 3. Its heavy (over 8lbs), bulky, has a whopping 2 USB ports, an i5 processor, and cost $900. But so worth it (for me). I've dropped it out of a truck onto concrete, used it in rain, and its been through some of the worst dust storms I've personally been in myself in Arizona. I wouldn't mind a few more USB ports, and if it was a bit faster... But considering all my electronics tend to have a precarious future in my care, I have to say this is the best laptop choice I could have made.
    Just to add a couple more things in the off chance anyone wants to know... It has a 300gb intel SSD in lieu of a traditional hard drive, nearly all components are user replaceable (including but not limited to memory, storage, screen, keyboard, integrated GPS, integrated bluetooth/aircard(verizon LTE), touchpad, port covers and screen),and has a usable touchscreen (resisitive, so gloves and objects (stylus) can be used with it). The daytime view-able screen is badass, and it can sit in full view of the sun inside a closed car when its 120F outside and not break a sweat (if only I could say the same about me).
    Just don't try any extreme gaming...

      You're an idiot and these things are tough as shit.
      We've had hundreds of these stacked like firewood in sea containers, ran them at -10 C, or +40 C, in dust, or in extremely humid environments. An idiot officer we had thought buying something like a Fujitsu Lifebook was a more cost effective choice since they were "semi rugged" and the things fell apart within the first 3 weeks of a deployment we had to rush buy toughbooks and ship them half way around the world to replace them.

    I work on F18's for the US Navy, all of our publications are on Panasonic Toughbooks. They have gotten a lot better in the last few years. Processors are much faster now, but mainly, they now have SSD's which not only are nearly immune to shock, but they are immensely faster. We did manage to break one the day after we got it. One of my guys left it sitting on top of the ejection seat and closed the canopy putting a hole in the top cover. We just tore it apart and swapped it with one from an older dead toughbook.

    I popped over $5K for a Getac V-110 and it’s been worth every penny. It’s great being able to lug around a laptop where I don’t have to worry about every bump or drop of liquid. As a consequence I can take it anywhere - hiking, to the city, in hot weather and the rain. The screen is bright enough to view clearly in broad daylight. It’s bulky as a laptop but actually much more convenient to carry than other laptops since you don’t even need a padded case. Just attach a strap and toss it over your shoulder. I’ve been using it for over 4 years and I still love this machine.

      other than the fact you liked your own comment it's because he needs the cameras to give him features such as sharp facial features and also not many people actually can afford the internet to stream 4k content (yes most of LTT viewers are not from the U.S.A. or Canada)

    I repair multiple brands of semi-ruggedized laptop of the sort issued to folks who might drop them off of telephone poles while it is raining. Usually they are just regular laptops with a sturdier casing & water sealing flaps over all the ports - they are water resistant when the ports are closed but not when open. And they had SSD earlier than most. Often they use low powered (low performance) CPU so they don't need active cooling (but not always). I rarely see potting or other exotic stuff beyond gasketing the port-flaps and screen bezel.

    solution to basically everything:
    -potting
    -make sure it's rugged (think magnesium frame like almost all thinkpads have.)
    -waterproof (plays into potting)
    -tough screen
    -good screen
    -touchscreen (maybe, if you need it, most don't have it)
    that's basically it.

    I was once driving down the main street in my home town and the passenger door on my Geo (yes, it had been securely shut) flung open when I took a corner a little to fast; one of my Itronix laptops flew out of my car and skidded across the highway... The Getac I've use (looking at their site, it might be an older version of B300) had a crappy screen (1024x768) and the keyboard wasn't exactly user friendly. The touchpad wouldn't work properly when there was a little moist. And after a few years (2 or 3), some of they keys on the keyboard (some letters, some numbers, some other buttons) don't work at all anymore.
    With that said, the battery life was impressive - at first you could easily get 24h (although now it's closer to a "mere" 6-7h) - and turning the screen to the brightest setting really makes it easy to see things on it even in daylight.
