  • In this video I am going to unpack and give you a quick overview of this DRS LXI military laptop .... without a doubt the most bad ass laptop I have ever seen.
Has a few issues that we'll tackle in future series, the final goal being to get it up and running , and enjoying some Red Alert multiplayer gaming.

I worked at a computer store back in the early 2000s. We had a Toughbook on display for quite a while because nobody was interested in paying that much for a mid-spec P-III. After sitting unloved on the display counter for over a year, it developed a couple bad pixels and the hard drive started to fail.

Reminds me that car electronics do have higher standards for vibration and harsh environment resistance (that is, decent car parts), so they have a layer of protection on top of the soldered parts and bigger parts like capacitors and the hunky car connectors are all pressure/spring connections, none of the biggest parts are soldered to avoid solder cracks.
Sure there would have been a small market for tough HDDs before the rise of flash storage, but have never heard of that, wonder if this old army laptop on the video has one of them if they do exist.

@AnotherOne They absolutely would not be using this laptop. They would only be using computers with processors from such big brand names like Mikron, NIISI, Angstrem and Integral.
Russian (rightly so) are paranoid enough to not use IC from western sources for their critical military stuff. However most of the design might be stolen from the west. Since that was one of big area of espionage during cold war. Stealing plain old CPU and IC designs. People would probably go "But why, that one is the old part". yeahhhhh but Soviets wanted the actual IC design to manufacture, not just supply of parts or spec.
For example one of the famous Soviet "Sleepers" Jack Barsky (now well long public, retired and integrated to USA) was mainly dealing in stealing plain old western Software codes, parts specifications, hardware designs etc. Not the super high secret military ones. Just the plain commercial ones, so engineers back home could adapt and produce them for Soviet military critical use.
But you are right they might be using that era hardware. Not out of poorness, but out of it being a known quantity item from established domestic or other highly trusted source. Plain old military command doesn't need lot of horse power. Mostly it is "can you display maps and allow running real life version of 90's graphics strategic military command game, can you do some math for artillery calculation, can you run somewhat large spreadsheets to coordinate logistics". More important is "Can you connect in as many ways as possible and run on really weird powersources" also "can I just throw you in back of military transport truck doing off road."
Also in most cases inside is a dedicated crypto chip to run the all communications through. Plus actually some of the critical memory bits are probably on batttery (not the main battery, a second backup battery) secured volatile memory. So that, if the laptop is about to land on wrong hands, pull out the power and backup power to that critical "I contain the encryption keys" volatile memory bank. After which the device is a really expensive way to run minesweeper on, since all communications keys went poooofffffff and hard drive is useless without the keys also having gone pooooofffff. Which is paranoid, but that is military use for you. No way to forget to wipe the keys good enough and them being forgotten on some non volatile memory, if only place they are on the memory bank backing of the crypto chip and that crypto chip has exclusively volatile memory banks. So pull the power and the memory will physically wipe itself, unless the enemy is there with a wat of liquid nitrogen within minutes to cold store the memory bank.

Hi, fellow Belgian here! that keyboard is actually quite unusual for the time. if you look at the keycaps, not only are they uni profile(every key is the same) but they are DSA, meaning it has a spherical instead of cylindrical cutouts at the top. I wonder what sort of switch is under there. traditionally super-rugged military keyboards use hall effect switches(they are almost completely dirt and grime resistant) but this kind of sounds like regular membranes. would be cool if you took a keycap off or even disassembled they keyboard to have a look inside. as for the BAMS, I'm pretty sure that's not an antenna connector but rather the interface to the transceiver that would actually have the antenna and stuff. cool stuff, almost looks like it came straight out of fallout!

The 28V connector is for a NATO standard Vehicle connection. All NATO vehicles run using 28V DC electrical systems. There was a similar cable to the one your using for AC that plugged right into the truck. The AC side had a BUNCH of different cords that could be used depending on what you were plugging into. Even US power, as it was not uncommon for the US ARMY or Canadians to set their bases up with US mains power abroad.

May I ask something unrelated to this video?
I'd like to know, whether the keyboard of the DRS LXI is equipped with mechanical or rubber dome key switches. I'm asking this, because I noticed, that some ruggedized Laptops have mechanical switches.
An example would be my Kontron IN Lite, which uses Cherry ML switches.
Thanks in advance, for answering my question.
BTW Your videos are beyond amazing and very educational as well. I really love your content.
I'm already excited for part 4 of this series.
