for beginners like me: to taper, use Pencil Editor and drag a point of the round part of line inwards, while also holding SHIFT

Hey Tracy, I really enjoyed this video. My friend Svetlana (Lana) told me to check you out. Even though I teach at Seneca and work at 9Story, I am always one to learn from everyone I can. I'll have to check out some more of your videos so I can try to make mine better =) Great job!

Yay, thanks :D - I think with this program you can never really learn the whole thing. And once 15 drops next month, there's brand new stuff to get into.

    Hi Tracy!
Thank you for your video! It's very useful and it works!
I have some suggestions and questions.
    1) For regular autopatch (+ z-depth), you don't really need the cutter. It shows same results as with a cutter. Here is my example - ipic.su/img/img7/fs/renderwitoutcutter.1507009621.jpg
    2) I tried to apply 'my' method on minus z-depth and it did not work. ( Here - ipic.su/img/img7/fs/zdepthnotworking.1507009730.jpg ). Do you think it can work at all?
    3) In your method, why do we need a cutter with autopatch together specifically?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I use the cutter because it works for me lol. there's no "right" way of rigging. I like to cut away the line then use the overlay layer to hold the overlapping line.
If your way works for what you need it to do, go for it.
In general I use the simple method from arms 1. I only use auto-patches in the studio, because studios think more -is-more.

I love these videos! Really helpful, and easy to follow :D
I was just wondering; when I did the 'dependent patch' on my arm, after using the OL and NoOL, the patch didn't translate across the substitute drawings, so I copy&pasted the patch into the overlay of each the substitute drawings on the upper arm. Am using 15 so I don't know if it's different with the update? Or if I did something wrong?
Thanks for these tutorials! Am slowly working my way through all of them, haha!

If you have multiple drawing subs on the node controlling the patch they will each need to be adjusted. there's no way around that.
Every drawing substitution is it's only little independent unit;.

This program is massive and confusing. Everyone I know will agree it's a big learning curve.
Take your time, start with a couple drawings, composites, and a cutter and play around with it to see how it works.
Once you get comfortable, you can try adding layer selectors.
If you take it in bites you'll get there. :)

Hey Tracy! Great videos! Really enjoying them.
I discovered that last method of patching arms while browsing the Toon Boom forums and it completely blew my mind. I was searching for a way to push my arms behind the body in z-space without breaking the auto patch and that method works perfectly.
I rig my arms (and legs and anything else I need patched) almost the exact same way you do but the only difference is that I put all those art layers into a group and then plug the auto patch into that group instead of having them out in the main node view.
To me, it just makes for a cleaner node view setup and it's something I can just copy right in from my library and BOOM patched.
Here's an example of my setup, curious if you've ever worked this way before (grouping the art layers etc.):

James Nethery -I'm a big fan of any kind of templates. One of my catch phases is never make anything twice.
Now a days, i don't do a lot of production rigging, just R&D. So I will work with the anumation supervisor, TD , director, and whoever else wants their hands in the pot, and design an entire rig template.
If they want autopatch (it usually comes down the the ani-sup's personal preference) they are all built into the master template.
Some studios like lots of groups- I personally like to see all the guts. It makes costume changes easier if some of the structure doesn't work.
At the end of the day, if it works, it's right :).

Hi James! I am interested in your method. Could you explain it a bit deeply please?
