      Yes no car pooling unless they chip in for gas, good thing that air filters don't cost that much, air for tires is free most of the time. Big issue is the drivers that like to "rev up their engines" and sit on my ass while I'm starting my drive smoothly while you can see their faces getting red in rear view mirror and they seem to be practicing acting by showing all these hand...fingers too movements;)

      Ross Marvin I guess that’s the only option, because it would be illegal to starve the cat to reduce load. Shaving the cat would reduce air drag but would probably result in operator injury as well as wet hairballs in slippers in the morning as revenge. But a shaved cat will promote optimal adhesion to duct tape if you attach cat to car roof...however duct tape can cause definite wind drag, as will the cat’s cheeks when they fill with air. Legal prosecution is also 99.9% likely. *legal disclaimer/ Do not hurt animals!!!

    Scotty makes a lot of sense. As a hobbyist mechanic, I’ve always recommended to keep OEM oil viscosity. Primary reason is the journels in your crank and rod bearings are drilled to move oil evenly and sufficiently throughout the engine. To increase viscosity may very well reduce the ability to get the right amount in the right place. May be a topic for Scotty.

    Here is a tip: look up your engine’s peak torque RPM and try to keep your engine rotating near that number whenever you are accelerating. At cruising speed, use the tallest possible gear to keep your revs low, but not so low that you lug the engine. Use your brakes as little as possible, don’t exceed 55 mph on the freeway. I improved my mpg from 25 to 30 with these simple changes.

    • @MikeDunn

    • @wmc128

      Aaron Garcia most cars have a overdrive gear or tall gear use it on the highway and also 55mph won't give you better mileage most cars and trucks get there best fuel economy around 60 to 70 mph but most roads are 55 mph due to the government wants you to spend more money at the pump by buying more fuel.

    • @Boz1211111
      @Boz1211111 6 лет назад +1

      You may use peak torque with diesel engines but with petrol there is no way that would be better. My engine has peak torque at 4300 rpm and i go up to 2000 when accelerating. Point is not to use more throttle than you need for maintaining wanted speed later.

    • @aygwm
      @aygwm 6 лет назад

      Boz 2011 okay. It’s a bit more complex than that. www.physicsforums.com/threads/a-question-about-the-relationship-between-mpg-and-engine-torque.455787/#post-3037962

    • @Boz1211111
      @Boz1211111 6 лет назад

      Oh, I see. You were talking about fuel consumption per generated kW. In that case its true. but drag increases exponentialy.. so its some kind of mix between the two when you are cruising. And you were talking about acceleration. Now we have the problem. In theory you wold be correct but for some reason its not like that. and you benefit if you are lighter on throttle, because such hard accelerations would lead you to generating more energy than you need in city driving.
      Hope this is not too confusing, because i see you know what are you talking about.
      Im prety devoted to chasing consumption figures and managed to get 1996. BMW 318ti to 5.6l/100km consumption on mostly open road. :)

    I’d say also, having good maintenance patterns is also a way to get good gas mileage. Make sure that your cooling system works and your coolant is in usable shape, make sure your ignition parts are in good shape(cap, rotor, wires, plugs), and one overlooked item is differential gear oil. Because if that’s full of shavings or is just dirty, your drivetrain will have a good amount of resistance to turning as well.

    In a standard/stick car, you can get better better city gas mileage if you "skip shift" i.e. 1/3/5/6 instead of rowing through all the gears. It's only practical if you in a flat area, and you keep your shifts at around 2.5k to 3.5k.
    The newer V8 camaro, and Corvette both have a 1 to 4th gear shift requirement when your not accelerating fast from a stop. A sign will come up on the center dash forcing you to shift from 1 to 4. The computer locks out gears 2 and 3. This was done to meet epa regulations and avoid a gas guzzler tax on the SS and the Stingray.

    We did data collection on tire air pressure and there is no evidence (statistically significant evidence) that incorrect tire pressure leads to changes in gas mileage (+/-5 psi from mfg recommended - we didn’t check if you horribly under or over-inflate the ties +/-10 psi ). We were also surprised at that finding, as our hypothesis was that there will be a significant change in gas mileage with an increase / decrease in tire air pressure. Our sample size was about 12k cars.
    The two things that made the most difference in gas mileage were the driving style (aggressive vs gentle) and total weight of the vehicle. Our sample had hybrids, suvs, sports cars with small engines, sports cars and suvs with engines larger than 5 liters, crossovers and family sedans with engines larger than 2 liters but less than 5 liters.
    Over, and under-inflating tires did lead to a bit more wear on the tires, and compromised handling / breaking.

      haris javed try deflating the tires on your bycicle and try to ride it. It takes alot more force and energy to get moving. So deflated or low pressure tires will make your engine work harder and get worse mpg. Scotty is correct.

      John Foley if by max you mean max load, then you better deflate them right away!!
      I did that last time and one of my tires in the back started having its tread separate from the base of the tire itself while going 70mph, I almost got into a serious accident because of that

    • @MrKnutriis
      @MrKnutriis 6 лет назад

      Acuravigor - a car is not a bicycle. I would also think that more air in the tire - translates into less friction. But consider a car - which has suspension on all four wheels - if you make the tire stiffer by putting in more air - it will roll more easily. But doing so - it wil transmit more movement to the suspension of the car. Stiff tires and stiff suspension will be more economical - than soft tires and soft suspension. Simply putting more air in your tire may not help as much as you think - and a car is not a bicycle. A cushy car absorbs the unevenness of the road - translates it into friction - which is heat - which is powered by the fuel you just bought. A stiff ride is more economical than a soft ride. You can save gas by removing your shock absorbers - just put a solid bar in its place.

    - improve aerodynamics of the car.
    - cover the underside up
    - lower the car
    - increase tire pressure but not too much
    - use the narrowest tires that are allowed for your car
    - change your oil and use 0w40. 0w30 or 0w20 are nonses because they wear the engine quite a lot when the additives are used up
    - uses fuel efficient tires when driving most of the times slow. on highway speeds its not that big of a deal.
    - keep windows closed at higher speeds
    - put some friction reducing additives to your manual gearbox and differentials
    - clean air filter and fuel filter
    - try 2 stroke oil to your diesel(jaso fc specification low smoke low ash if you have a dpf)
    - if you drive in the city lower the weight of your car as much as possible. on highway not relevant
    - shift early but not too early especially not on engines with low torque because they use more fuel in that case
    and of course
    - uses moon caps :)

    Regular maintenance not really talking about tune ups but just repairing the car as needed. My father has a truck and for about a year his check engine light was on and he was complaining how he lost a good bit of gas mileage. I asked him about the check engine light and he just started complaining about cars in his day would just work and all this electronics are ruining vehicles and it's just a scam for dealerships to make money.
    What he forgot to mention was cars in his day only lasted 100k miles and modern cars while more difficult can last tripe that if you show a little pride in ownership and fix stuff when it breaks.
    Anyways I checked the engine light and sure enough it was his throttle positioning sensor. I replaced it and his gas mileage went back to normal.
    Just felt this could help most folks as well the engine light isn't a scam it's there to tell you something is wrong and it can often lead to worse mileage.

    HHO does work. I know it because it works on my car for 4 years now. I didn't buy the kit, I made it myself so nobody wanted to scam me. You understanding of HHO is wrong Scotty. HHO is not a fuel, it increases engine thermal efficiency by more complete fuel burn. My emissions of CO is 0, same with HC. I have d4f renalut engine 1.2 16v petrol and use 6 amps to produce 300ml of gas a minute. I have fuel savings of 20-30%. I tested it so many times over the years. Just my 2 cents.

    Also, a great option is to use a good quality MAF sensor cleaner. A dirty sensor causes less bhp, more gas etc. Another option is to not fill your car with fuel if you are not going too far. Fill regularly up to 35%. Filling up to 100% is extra weight. Use that method if there is a gas station nearby. Scotty, I have a small suggestion. Dear Scotty
    I had a 1980 Mercedes 300 TD diesel station wagon. Naturally aspirated. No turbocharger. Going up even a small hill was no small challenge. Engine working harder, speed going down.
    Enter the "magnet theory". Found a VERY GOOD article on Google on how to do this RIGHT, because indeed there are differences. Forget the little auto store magnet.
    After I was done, which is very simple, this happened:
    1) Going up the hill, MUCH MORE POWER, no slowdown at all.
    2) 20 year old diesel STOPPED smoking after one minute of driving with the correct magnet arrangement.
    I will wager anyone to anything that what I am saying is true. Because really, I drove this car.
    I can also say that there are PATENTS taken out on emission reduction by 50% or less in serious industrial environments by the use of MAGNETS, of course used the right way.
    I like your channel and your show, but this I have to add.

    It was time to replace nearly everything to help it last another 100,000 miles or more.
    I did buy a new set of Michelin 80,000 mile tires from Costco. I could not believe the sale
    it came in at less than $600 out the door.
    I did read the inflation max on the tires at 54 psi and the door jam says about 36 psi. So I went for 44 psi. It get a little rougher ride but my gas mileage will be better.
    Now, bought a new automatic transmission filter and 4 quarts of t-iv fluid from Castrol. I will again change my auto transmission fluid. I finally did at 196,000 miles and it still runs like new. I want to replace more of the older worn out fluid.
    I should change the spark plugs and air filter.
    Trying to help my 2007 Matrix last as long as I can.

    Over inflating the tires will give better mpg as it will decrease the contact patch and lower rolling resistance. You might wear the center of the tires prematurely or make handling worst, in some cases handling improves as it stiffens the sidewall and the tires last longer as the manufacturers recommended pressure was too low. This is especially true on the front tires of commercial panel vans which cut out the tire shoulders at stock pressures almost every time.
    Higher profile tires have better comfort and rolling resistance due to the air volume in the tire potentially using less fuel despite increased unsprung rotational weight. Thinner tires have less weight and a smaller contact patch giving less rolling resistance and drag so give better MPG.
    Optimum tire size for a typical mid sized car in 2018 for grip (in all weathers), comfort, wear and economy (MPG & purchase price in UK) appears to be 205 / 55 / 16.

    More than a decade ago I had a home-made hydrogen-petrol combo kit installed in my 2002 Ford Escort, which didn't use electrolysis, it was carbon fiber hydrogen tank where the gas went through a series of filters, etc. to the Intake; but the hydrogen was made by a solar-electrolysis water-to-hydrogen kit at home where the tank was filled by a high pressure tank once it had enough available. That car went from Avg. 36 MPG on Gas alone to Avg. 61 MPG mixed with the kit (I had a Mini OBDII attached that showed averages. It cost zero to the electric bill since it was done by solar power to create the Hydrogen, just took a while.

    Hey scotty i have a question about my awd lincoln. I replaced the transfer case about a year ago. I assumed it failed because of a bad alignment and tires. The dealership just called me today and told me there was some "seepage" fom it and it is in the begining stages of failing again. Its a closed unit i should beable to get warrantied, but is there anything else i can do so this doesnt happen again? or anything u can think of that would keep causing this?

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 лет назад +6

      Keep the right size tires on your vehicle and keep them all the same size, and never use a temporary spare tire on an AWD vehicle, it burns up your transfer case as well as your differential that you use the temporary spare on. Different sized tires cause the AWD system to go into a frenzy of engagement and disengagement because it thinks you are losing traction because you have 3 tires turning at a different speed than the temporary spare for example...or you are cheap and only buy 2 tires...well as tires wear they lose a bit of their dimensions, enough so that an AWD system recognizes the difference in wheel speed and engages your AWD, well its doing so quite often because your tires aren't the same size so it causes the transfer case to get hot and heat will certainly kill it...some of those transfer cases have a viscous coupler which uses fluid pressure to transfer power between the front/rear axles, heat will cause that couple to get hot and not function properly and repeated overheating of that viscous coupler just burns them up...some transfer cases use clutch packs, same happens there, you overheat those clutch packs often enough it burns them up as well.
      Right size tires, proper tire inflation, and yes even a terrible alignment can cause issues with your drive train. So does running tires that are too large.

    • @kingkevin267
      @kingkevin267 6 лет назад

      First a transfer case seeping does not meaning it is failing. do you have any other symptoms. Where is the unit leaking from. Second the transfer case you did put in, was it new, used, or rebuilt, and if rebuilt by who. When you had the new transfer case put in, did you also get new tires and a alignment. Who did the alignment. Did you use the correct size tires on the truck from the factory, did you do all four. The most common causes of transfer cases failure are wear tear (apply if your buying a junk yard one). Wrong size tires. Mismatched brands and/or wear. not properly aligned. Modifications to the suspension (lifting or lowering it), and lastly impact damage (which could be the cause of it seeping fluid).

    • @jarehelt
      @jarehelt 6 лет назад

      Kevin Weil
      They said the seepage was "from the top vent". I bought the transfercase new, and got all 4 new tires, (stock size) and an alignment done imediately All at the dealership. The only odd thing that happeded later was discout tire underinflated a set of tires (i alwas buy sets of 4) they assured me it was 30 psi when it was supposed to be 35 psi and they went bald pretty quick, but they were warrantied for a new set of tires. I also cracked a rim on a pot hole about a month back so i have 1 different rim but they are all the same stock size. I will find matching rims when i get the chance

      TheFreePantheist The new rim might be the same diameter, but is is the same lenth. When you buy rims they might say 19x8.5, or something similar to that. Thats great that you matched the first number, but did you also match the second number. Also you said you bought the transfer case a year ago, and had new tires done. Then you said a bought a set of tires from a different place, and they under inflated them. Unless your driving a insane amount of miles in 1yr, you should not need to replace tires that quickly. There are a lot of factors that go into tire wear but at the very minimum you should get 20k miles on very cheap tires. It is more average to get at least 30k-40k miles on tires. Unless your driving like a manic (doing burnouts, drifting, ect...), and if you are doing that, that would be cause of your transfer case failure.

      I dont see any numbers on the wheels, i might beable to find it if i dig up some receipts, or call discount tire. I put the exact same tires on all the rims could they still be different size lengths? I do drive a ton 60k+ miles and about 3 sets of mid grade tires a year. I drive very conservatively ill do an occasional pull onto the highway, but no burnouts and i dont run it harder than any other car ive owned. I mostly replace tires due to roadhazzards, potholes or nails in the sidewall. Also speedlimits can sometimes reach 80mph around here. Im sure that wears them down quicker too

    Woow this is a really brilliant video.. I agree... some of my neighbors think that putting the car windows down AND TURNING THE AC OFF while driving on a highway road will save them from burning excessive gasoline in their cars... and i remember telling them once that it’s a completely wrong theory.. because by doing that the air will flow directly into the car cabin creating a lot of more friction ... and of course the more friction the car has against the air the more power the engine will need and gas burning to keep up with the speed as comparing when having the AC compressor ON ..🇵🇷

    You could make your passengers walk. That'll get you better gas mileage.

    I was a working Cert. master mechanic with all the licenses.
    A smog tech also, for 12 yrs. here in CA.
    My 1971 383 Plymouth roadrunner would get 21 mpg cruising at 60 mph on long trips. 13 mpg if ripping around with a heavy foot.
    My wife's toyota highlander gets 21.5 -22.5 no matter how you drive it.
    Same for my son's mustang and ranger pickup.
    CAN YOU SAY "PREPROGRAMMED"🤔?
    My completely stock 1966 289 mustang would get 16mpg.
    So...
    I took the jets out of the carb.
    Drilled them out and filled with solder.
    drilled new smaller holes to lean it out.
    Ran a drip-preheated fuel system into the intake to introduce almost combusted fuel to the pistons.
    Permanently opened the Hot air flap from exhaust so as to always have hot air introduced to the aircleaner.
    Installed copper core spark plugs and gapped them at 56thousands.
    THAT CAR WAS WAAAAY QUICKER!
    Much more resairplane. Smooooth. It got 22mpg driving without a heavy foot.
    Did the same to a 1999 toyota echo with same results.
    38 mpg to 41mpg. Then the check engine light came on.
    I would have pushed it further but the echo was not mine. The Owner didn't like the check engine light.
    You cannot improve your gas mileage in CA because you cannot tamper with the smog equipment.
    even if it exhaust is cleaner.

    90% Right This time -- Scotty is right about everything EXCEPT the Acceleration vs Fuel Economy comment.
    BMW did a scientific study on the subject in the early 80's which says, basically that to get the best fuel economy from point A to point B, you should:
    A. Accelerate moderately HARD --- gets you to a higher gear faster, your engine has less pumping losses and you get to your destination slightly faster.
    B. Cruise at steady state -- 40 mph is the best because drag becomes a factor above 40 mph.
    C. Use your brakes lightly -- coast to stops.
    So -- so-called jackrabbit starts are not really bad for your fuel economy.
