Depends how much $$$ you want to spend but the gm stage upgrades are a good place to start, suspension, maybe even covert it to a turbo if you've got some $ to burn. I've got two Cobalts a 2006 LS with the L61 since brand new(which have grown to love this platform from her) with just basic bolts on's like cai, 2.25" exhaust manifold back w/high flow cat, short shifter, jet maf sensor, front strut brace, Bosch +4 spark plugs, power stop rotors and pads. My other cobalt is a 2010 SS/TC for a few years now with k&n/aem upgraded short ram intake, xs 3" turbo back and will do the gm stage 1 upgrade soon along with suspension and brakes. since this will be my Sunday driver and my 2006 will have a fully built ecotec(not sure but leaning towards an LSJ block for mpfi) will be my project.
Cobalt is shit. Chevy needed it to boost their mpg ratings for the epa. Their main money is in their trucks. My ecotec suffered the infamous timing chain failure. Built cheap, sold cheap

you can with good fab knowledge and some research...theres civics running awd k series kits off honda elements and honda pilots pushing 7s and 8s on the track. there are even aftermarket companies like humble performance selling bolt on rear trailing arm kits for the rear diff. and mounts, im pretty sure these kits could work on a cobalt.

Like a little razor blade in traffic. If I drove easy it would get incredibly good mileage and when it was go time the car was fast enough to get it done. The engineering in the SS Turbo Cobalt was top notch. I drive a 2014 Mustang GT now because its a more comfortable for my commute but I wish I still had that Cobalt. First GM with Direct Injection, way more power per litre than almost any GM car including new Z07. Don't knock it until you actually have driven one...
I love my 09, my last car was a 08 zo6 and had an 04 zo6 before as well. I honestly must say my cobalt is so much fun and it pulls as hard as my 04 zo6 in its current tune. Fantastic power for the money. Great little car.
Bought a J-body with the, then new 2 .2 Ecotec. Each of my three kiddos drove it. I still got it. And it still gets it. Delta platform seems to iron out suspension issues. The J's on launch, squat aft pretty bad. Mulling a set of KYB Adjustables. But I'm old. My kidneys don't like the bumps.

***** he's 2900lbs, and the gearing is probably very short in the cobalt, the zr1 has gearing to go over 200mph, a zr1 is around 3600lbs and the GTR is heavier besides that he has slicks, weight is a lot more important than you think.
I remember that i once went to a drag race and literally saw a beetle beating a camaro and a little car named caribe (which is the latin american version of the 1980s golf) obliterating a corvette!!! obviously they were tuned as hell, but hey, this class of shows are worth every second.

Yeah true for about 2 grand you can turbo it. I forget how cheap these cars are now. I have had mine for 9 years but have the same LS manual. Partly because they are so cheap I couldn't get rid of mine for that because it is worth more to me, so I made it fast instead lol. It's a blast to autocross.
JD B Mine was in a minor accident(hit a deer, dented the hood, slightly bent the radiator core support) and also had a dent from a drunk neighbor kicking the passenger door and the guy I bought it from was about to have twins when he already had two kids so didn't want a couple. Got it for a steal of a price. Fixed up the minor issues. Bam, great car to get to college for the next few years at least. With 141k miles on it I likely won't turbo it, but in the future when I have more money I may end up buying an SS because even the LS is incredibly fun to drive.

Alot of these guys still have stock transmissions and rear ends, when you put more power in the car then you should and then try to dig on a prepped surface their little super cars blow up, its just people with a lot of money taking their toy to the strip.
I had a pretty built SS silverado and my buddies Cobalt SS absolutely shit on me. It was a while later that I found out that the damn thing was only 3,000 pounds to my 5,500 lol. Power to weight ratio baby!
