I just used this video to swap the faceplate on a Series X controller (model 1914). Video was easy to follow but they must have taken that controller apart a hundred times - those grips are HARD to remove. Way harder than the grips on the Xbox One model 1697 controller. My recommendation - work your way along the "underside" seam as shown around the 2:07 mark for a while. If your controller is as stubborn as mine, you'll have to work at it for several minutes. It will keep popping back into place. It will be annoying. But once you get it wedged up enough to be able to get your fingers under it, do so and pry it off like a savage animal. Good luck.
Too bad I botched my Series X controller last night trying to change out the buttons and faceplate 😭. Good thing I have a 2nd controller that came with the Series X 😁.
Don’t forget to put the metal bits that connect the batteries back in place while putting the back of the controller back on. I followed the video to a T and I was so relieved when I was finally done, just to try to turn it on and it just didn’t turn on :| my heart dropped so I just started comparing the controller I had just added the new buttons to a controller I already had that I haven’t messed with at all. Luckily I noticed it was just the metal for the batteries to connect and went in and put it back where it went. Now I’m abt to order another one for my second controller :3
I did it bro, thank you for the detailed demonstration. Ironically the challenge in my case was aligning the rubber button layout piece lol. Took me a minute
Just followed this video to chsnge face plate side grips and some buttons. Got to be honest i was panicking when i had it all apart wondering if i would get it back together but the video helped massively, now i have a new neat looking pad!!!
thank you so much for this! part of my bumper broke off, and wouldn't glue back on properly, so i figured i'd replace all the buttons with a custom set. with no prior experience, following this video step by step, it took me a little over 30 minutes to complete, and everything works!
This definitely helped me a great deal! Those tiny black wires did scared me a first but luckily they're not as fragile as they look. Now my controller looks like a purple cipher version! Thanks for such a detailed tutorial!
Simple and easy tutorial to follow! Thank you so much. It took maybe an hour at most for me to completely replace the buttons and joysticks following this video. I didn't think I'd be able to do it! It felt like a breeze!
If you take your time and don't rush you'll be fine. I'd hate to imagine how many controllers I've taken apart over the years. Them two wires are normally for something like your antenna or wireless/wifi connection. Just pop them off and gently press them back on, just make sure you line them up
@@user-xp6gi9ne2z Just use the original screws, you aren't changing anything that needs new screws. They always add screws in their pack in case you need new ones or maybe lose one. When they always send me kits out it had spare screws 👍
Video is well done, if anything its OVERLY explanative and thats not a bad thing. Made my first tear down a breeze overall. One thing I could think of on re-assembly, is the two metal bars that make the battery connection complete, make sure they slide on the right side of the backplate or it will not assemble properly. I had it throw me off initially.
I just found those front plates and button and i couldn't resist and bought one. Video shows instructions in great way even for someone who using screwdriver with this weird tip first time and basically first time messing with dissamble of living organims of electronic device :)
This was much easier than I thought! The video was super helpful, the only hard part was taking off the side pieces at the very beginning, I was worried I was going to break them but it turned out fine
In the time it takes to finish one series X controller's button swap, I could have fully shell-swapped, button swapped and cleaned the boards of two 360 controllers. Thanks for locking your controllers down Microsoft!
The 2 black wires are incredibly difficult to get back on and disconnect VERY easily when you think you finally got them connected. I spent over 40 minutes trying to get them to connect back with no luck. Fortunately they are for Bluetooth and I play with this controller wired to my PC so they're unneeded for me on that controller. ALSO, I swapped the black backplate from my black controller to my new purple controller that I installed the new buttons and triggers on. When reassembling the back plate to the controller, make sure the two tabs for the batteries make it through the slots on the backplate. I put mine back together only to realize one tab didn't make it through because I bent it. Not a big deal, took the back plate off, straightened it out, and it works fine. ALSO x2 I was frustrated when I had the controller apart because my right trigger was smashing into the right bumper causing the bumper to stick. I noticed there's a tab within the trigger mechanism that needs to be pushed behind the controller motherboard in order to free up the trigger a bit. After doing this, it was better but the bumper would still occasionally stick. After unscrewing and re screwing in the trigger cover multiple times to no avail, I just decided to put the whole controller back together in hopes that attaching the faceplate and backplates would help shift things around to where they needed to be. That worked for me and I'm stoked with how it looks. A bit upset that I couldn't get the Bluetooth wires to reconnect so I cant use this controller on my Xbox but only my PC with a wire, but I can get past with having 2 controllers.
I gotta say, this is a really great guide. However, the bluetooth wires need a bit more attention. I don't know if Microsoft changed those connections, but they very easily break. I'm going to try and solder them to their contact points. If that doesn't work, I have a broken controller. Nice buttons, though!

Anyone attempting this in 2022 should be very careful when moving the boards from the shell, they are using cheaper solder and the wires are easily disconnected , I’ve done this many times and just bought a new remote last week and they have cheapened out on the amount of solder used to connect the wires , smh
I was following this guide step by step for the clear mod of this controller, but everytime I try to put it back together the triggers get jammed. Any idea how to fix this?
Just finished my button replacement. wasn't exactly a perfect fit. specifically there's something about the left bumper that can stick occasionally. It seemed worse before I put the casing back on, but now that its fully reassembled it only takes a smack to get it back to being fully clicky. I'll have to take that over the right bumper straight up not working due to a broken piece of plastic.
After I’m done and putting my controller back together why is my front plate not aligned? Where the headphone jack is the covers aren’t flush together. How do I fix this?
Yes inside the batter compartment there should be metal plates which connect the batteries. Sometimes they get stuck inside when you put the back panel back on. It happened to me as well. Just take off the back panel and put it back on making sure the silver metal plates are coming through the back into the battery compartment. Should fix this
I have a question, I ordered red ones and i opened my controller, my bumpers have pins on them to hit the button for the bumper or something, but one came out so I’m trying to replace the bumper. In the video I can’t tell if the bumper has pins on it to hit whatever the button is on the controller, can someone tell me if there are? Or if they’ll work anyway because my right pin came out so it doesn’t click, but the left one has the pin so it clicks like normal.
The tutorial is valid, but I really wouldn't recommend opening it to change some aesthetic, after you open the xbox controller once it will never be the same, it will always have play on the grips and feel loose
What do the two black leads go to? I can't get them to reconnect but I put the controller back together and put batteries in it and all my buttons work.
You have to use the nail on your thumb to push them back. The black cables are for the wireless connection, so if the controller works good, then just leave them there.
Please check the metal plate in the battery tray was installed correctly. Also on the back side there is a small part of it popping up a bit to contact with the controller mainboard.
I’m not sure if I did it right but I followed every step and now the controller won’t turn on wirelessly 🤔 is it the two black cords that are inside the controller ? I changed buttons and front shell. But i have now a problem when i am gaming. The controller looses connection all the time. He loose connection to xbox. Anybody know why? Could it be an ESD problem? When i was working on the mainboard?
I went through all the steps, got everything connected back together fine including those small wires, but the controller won't turn on whether I use batteries or with a usb c cable. Any idea what could be the issue? Most troubleshooting online is just for battery issues.
What are the two black wires for? I was having trouble getting them in and accidentally bent them. I taped down for now and will probably solder them later. The controller seems to be working fine.
I just did this yesterday, and everything is working perfectly except the d-pad. It doesn't do the clicking for the up direction, I tested it on the Xbox home screen and it works, but I can't feel it working when I press it. It does the clicking when I take the cover off and re-checked it, but once the front cover goes on pushing up doesn't click. Why is it doing this?

All this time, I've restrained from ordering your stuff because I thought the face buttons were completely blank (as in, not having the ABXY or the △OX❒ engravings). They show up like that on Amazon! @@kram152 You are welcome, please keep the suggestion come! :)
So hard to do this while I’m dancing.
This was easy to do ! Thanks ! Unfortunately the custom extreme rate controller faceplate I'm using got stripped on a screw when trying to do this mod.
Same for me bro, literally happened rn while I was putting in a magnetic dpad, super disappointing but oh well
My RB button is stuck or idk i cant press it it doesent go in if i buy the kit and only pit the RB and LB thing in it does it work then and can i only put the RB Lb thing or am i supposed to put all buttons in ? And im rlyy scared to do this it looks pretty difficult and i am only 13 can i do that ?
We suggest you ask someone who capable of this installation to do it for you.
Done trying to get the black wires on why do you need them cause they aren't going back on no matter what 6 hours trying new controller it is
They are the signal wires
@@ExtremeRate yeah they won't stay on when I do finally get them on and then put all the casing back in they pop back of and it's just never ending can I stick them down with anything like glue or anything cause it's gettimg too much
@@bclfc90 If you make sure the connectors still look good, you can put them on with force and aligned correctly. We never tried glue but I don't think it works.
@@ExtremeRate I'll try done it so many times and just seems to fall of when putting the pad back together
would you guys consider making matching analog sticks for all the different button colours?
They have them, though I did read some people find quality issues with them. Thier face plates are amazing, and the buttons seem pretty good overall. Not sure on the joysticks myself but hey give em a try.
Does anyone know if this is the same for a battle beaver custom?
We need a release date for ps5 and Xbox series x controller remap kits
I can’t play games without back buttons anymore so please release them soon so I can mod the controllers
We are working very hard on them, please stay tuned!!!
Tell me about it! I've been struggling playing CoD CW without my back button kit, I miss it so much 😭
@@CraigsChannel The circuit part is finished, the program part is under testing and the physical back buttons part is under designing the structure, so anyway, we will try our best to make it out in season 1 of 2021, please stay tuned!!
@@ExtremeRate Best news I've heard all week. You're great 😎 really can't wait!
@@CraigsChannel Thanks for your support!!! :D
Is there matching thumb sticks we can purchase somewhere?
We have this www.amazon.com/dp/B01JZ93UX0/ and this www.amazon.com/dp/B08Q391YJY/
Bro thank it was soo help full
Glad we helped!
Does anyone know if there is a set of green buttons where the green matches the green on the 20th anniversary controller?
I think it would look really good with green buttons, specifically the transparent ones, but I dont want to order them if it doesnt match. Or does anyone know what their return policy is like? So Im not stuck with the buttons if they dont match?
@ExtremeRate I see you are somewhat active in the comments. Is this something you could answer for me?
Should I use an anti static mat when doing this?
That's better to do that.
So do you have to solder on any wires to do this
no the black and gold thing you take it just goes back into place no soldering needed i thought you might but nope
I changed buttons and front shell. But i have now a problem when i am gaming. The controller looses connection all the time. He loose connection to xbox.
Anybody know why? Could it be an ESD problem? When i was working on the mainboard?
Please check the 2 coax connectors inside the controller were plugged firmly.
this looks super hard but this guide is helpful as hell
without this video i would of guaranteed broken my controller
So you mean you made it, congrats!!!
@@ExtremeRate thanks man
I went through all the steps, got everything connected back together fine including those small wires, but the controller won't turn on whether I use batteries or with a usb c cable. Any idea what could be the issue? Most troubleshooting online is just for battery issues.
Check the wires one of them might be loose and not connected right
same for me i don’t know what i did worng
did this step by step and now my controller won’t cut on
I never got an Xbox button with mine
Can you sell in shopee/tokopedia bro?
What are the two black wires for? I was having trouble getting them in and accidentally bent them. I taped down for now and will probably solder them later. The controller seems to be working fine.
It's the antenna, the controller will work but the connection distance will pretty short
Why is it doing this?
please let us know your order number via email to info@extremerate.com with your shipping address and RUclips name, we will send you a replacement to try again!
Is the headphone jack supposed to come out
Mine just fell out didn’t know what it was until i read your question my i can fix it
1. Prytool broke after first sidegrip, needs to be stronger
2. Got the white which does NOT match the xbox white
3. Right bumper clip came broken which wouldnt be a big deal except the og bumpers are a different white and dont line up with the new triggers
are the buttons from the old xbox one s compatible with series s controllers?
No, only thumbsticks and ABXY
*you earned a sub*
Thanks!
It's so much harder to do on this than an Xbox 360 controller lol
yes :)
I did everything in the video and now my controller doesn’t even work
I had mines for 3 and it broke how can I clam my Warranty??
Please contact us via email to info@extremerate.com
All this time, I've restrained from ordering your stuff because I thought the face buttons were completely blank (as in, not having the ABXY or the △OX❒ engravings). They show up like that on Amazon! Years later, I discover you have a channel and now I know the buttons DO have the letters / symbols they should??? I'm ready to mod my controllers now! I wonder how many more people are in my situation, not willing to take a chance at your products because they think the buttons are just plain (which makes the controller look really cheap, IMO). Maybe you'd consider updating your Amazon pictures? or adding a disclaimer that the buttons, do, in fact, have the letters / symbols engraved as expected?
Thank you bro. We are also making the all plain version lol. But only the current-gen controller will have both versions, the Xbox One will still only have the plain version. We forgot to describe the engraved symbols in our Amazon store, but the pictures talk!! :D
when the lofty remap for series s/x controller?
Hopefully in May!
Bumpers won't fit :(
Nevermind there was something with my bumper that I installed incorrectly. :)
now my controller wont power on i checked the two cables nothing wow
Have you just only replace the buttons?
I just bought the kit and I really only have a question about the two little black wires on the circuit. Like do they slide in or is adhesive or?
Align it with its socket, and then press it down by your nail
@@ExtremeRate ok thanks
@@itsiqn6951 You are welcome
Will the XSX bumper , trigger fit elite 2 controller?
No
These are nice
Thank you!
i agree
