  • On February 26, the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County ignited in rough terrain and unfavorable weather conditions. Today, the fire is an estimated 850,000 acres, making it the second largest wildfire in Texas history.
    Feb. 26 - 27 was a multi-day wildfire outbreak across Texas and Oklahoma based on the outcomes of multiple fires burning over 100,000 acres.
    The largest 3 wildfires in Texas history prior to 2024 include:
    - East Amarillo Complex of 2006, burning 907,245 acres
    - Big Country of 1998, burning 366,000 acres
    - Perryton of 2017, burning 318,156 acres
