From what I remember from my childhood in Greece, part of the cup is filled with water, and only the top layer is oil. Then you keep adding oil as needed. Oil floats, so it will rise as the surface layer.
Absolutely! If your church has rats or perhaps even mice, this can be an issue. During lent we kept loosing these. It turns out rats were climbing up and taking the ones that weren't being hung from the wall. I trapped all three rats in our church and it's no longer an issue. The rats are attracted to the cork that is soaked in olive oil (it goes bad over time and becomes smelly for them).

Thanks! Just bought one as I collect incense from countries I visit(in Greece now) and wondered how to use this.
Any advice how to prevent these from flipping upside-down?
You need to get floats made from natural cork, not the synthetic ones
Will this style work with a cotton wick also?
How many times can you use the corks before having to replace them?
They should last a fairly long time. If they become burnt or no longer float, they should be replaced.
Has anyone heard that rats may climb and eat that cork? any experience?
Fucking what 😂

My pops and sizzles, it’s almost frightening 😮is this normal?
We recommend trimming the wick before re-lighting if this happens.

This lamp is not good: it's important to waterproof the cork towards the oils before use for a long use (more than 2-3 days...).
My standard water glass with this type of cork and wick is going strong for many many months …
