I’ve commented several times and I think Shawn does a great job but there is a big installation difference between areas that freeze and areas that don’t. I personally have used both and since the pipe is so close to the surface we deal with a drastic shift in the soil and rigid pipes have more problems. Corrugated with enough fall performs great. Pvc works better with less fall but is no good if it freezes and breaks. So the real deal is what is best for each climate.
@@UniqueSatellite I'm curious though, why would PVC freeze and break any different from corrugated? Both are in the ground and sub-surface and both are subject to the same conditions. I see PVC Sch 40 can become brittle at low temps, but how low and what happens with corrugated in the same condition? I'm a big data guy -- I'd like to see a study done to show comparison.
@@UniqueSatellite as someone who lives in an area with a 52" frost line, sdr 35 and sch40 have no issues with freeze/thaw, sdr35 has issues with large trees however. Sch40, no issues. Corrugated fails completely after a year when the standing water inside freezes and expands... even worse in the spring. sdr35 and sch40 has outward/inward pressure ratings (static and burst) starting at 165psi to 305psi. Same size corrugated has a pressure rating in the low teens... there is no comparison.
@@joerad4722 different mixes of pvc & hdpe range from -20 degrees centigrade to -45 degrees centigrade, corrugated becomes brittle at -5 to -10 degrees centigrade.
In germany, we use always PVC pipe for these drainage needs you showed. Other pipe (currogated, perforated, from roll) ONLY as footer drain. Nice to see your professional work. Greetings from Germany

Yes and yes! I work specifically with drainage problems so I see the worst ones. I have witnessed life changing results for my customers by solving their flooding issues. They stay in touch.
I agree with one of the other comments where they said the FDM wouldn't want to see this...I would still like to see him try to argue that....actually I wouldn't because he's annoying!

I do find it amusing when FDM says that Sch 40 is smooth so it doesn't stay in place, gimmie a break, I do like the corrugated he sells, if I were doing a foundation drain I might use it. Otherwise I'm more comfortable with straight pipe.
I installed a neighbors French drain, gutter, and yard drains all from your videos. All PVC and using your tips like don't connect catch basins to French drains. I did 2 separate systems. Everything still works great. Thanks for making videos!

Thanks for the great video Shawn. I chuckled when you called to go by the house and I said there are big storm chasers and then there’s you…rain storm chaser to see how the projects are holding up. Your videos were one of the reasons I chose to go with you all those 600 days ago. Looking back at the output was amazing and even more so that the yards weren’t completely under water as they used to be. Oh, and the basement is dry as a bone, hence why we called for job 1.

Absolutely worth it. That last house where the water was shooting out of that 4 inch pipe really surprised me. As you say, that's now water they don't have to worry about.

That's enough outflow to get the micro hydropower folks excited. If you PVC piped a whole neighborhood into a ravine that is real power potential!
Looks like a 6 inch might have been a good idea there. Of course that much water does not come down all the time.

PVC is the only way to go! I have a corrugated system in my backyard that cant even handle a hose!
I can't tell you how many times I've run a hose in one of those pipes with the homeowner trying to figure out where it comes out...
I live in the FARM tile capitol of the world, Iowa. I have helped install it, and the contractors ALL try to get it 30'' or deeper, in the soil profile...crushes easily. Some of these guys have been doing this for 50+ years! They call it FIELD TILE for a reason! You are doing the correct way to alleviate excess water, Shawn.
@C B But I see a lot of field tile buried too close to the surface, on utoob. Gonna crush, plug, and deteriorate (sun exposure), long before sch40! Do it right the 1st time. Costs more initially, but if done right, lasts much longer!
Update: I have installed a PVC SDR35 system to drain out the middle of my lawn. 1 year in the ground and it’s working better than the corrugated.

I’ve used some corrugated for my DIY drainage as it’s just easier to bend around the landscape, and the in-built slots are handy if you want a French drain style of drain. However ALL my roof stormwater goes into PVC all the way to the street, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In a storm the outflow is like a water cannon and all the debris goes with it.

After seeing both in action I'd say pvc is 100% the way to go. It's really cool seeing these drains working so well a year or more after the fact. It just goes to show that if you maintain the system annually, it'll continue to work great for many years to come.

633 days later, now this is a real good performance test, the test results shows full capacity. That is what I like about PVC - full capacity whenever needed for the "monsoon season" here in Colorado.

Shawn, it would be really interesting if you traveled with some of the clear corrugated that you could connect to your discharge points and show the collection of shingle dust and other small stuff that gets stuck in the ribs.

It’s amazing what proper drainage can do. I had a landlord that constantly complained about leaks in the basement and every time I would tell her she needs proper drainage. Failed to use her ears and only spoke. Could have saved so much headache. There would literally be massive pools of water up against the house and she wondered why it would leak… I’m like wow you have got to be kidding me. Great job here
I see it all the time. It seems like common sense to me that water flows downhill but many cannot understand it.
I love your videos and the way you follow up to show the impact of your installations. Your narration is brilliant, and if you get sick of drainage you'd be an excellent voice over artist.
Seeing downpipes discharge storm water directly into gardens next to the house (especially where there are basements!) is surprising. In Australia (in urban/metropolitan areas at least) stormwater must be discharged to the municipal stormwater drainage system (usually the street gutters), and since we are drought prone, homeowners are encouraged to have their roof downpipes gathered into rainwater tanks which then supply toilet cisterns and washing machines. Basement rooms are also unusual here. Even so, I really like the different ways you approach drainage issues, especially the riprap channels (which look beautiful).

For sure! Especially almost two years later. This Homeowner already paid for a corrugated drainage system which we replaced.
The easiest way to prove that corrugated pipe traps debris is to compare it to a sluice box that’s made to trap gold and other small sediment in the ripples, and it has to be manually cleaned to stay efficient.

I agree! If you think about it, I was there during the crucial 5 minutes to catch the system at full cap and then catching back up. It's often luck to catch these but super awesome footage.
@@GCFD I guess the question is it better to use 6" all the way in this situation, I guess that would have been ideal but possibly a waste if this type of rain doesn't happen often and likely considerable more cost, so it depends. But seeing that, 6" likely would of handled the situation nicely.
Schedule 40 pvc pressure is the best in the ground. So many people are so cheap and use schedule 35. Salute you for using good pipe. I’m a plumber.

Absolutely amazing watching all that Water which was Once a Problem, now simply evacuating an area at speed. More of these visits certainly, but also an failures you might have had, such as perhaps We might have needed a Bigger Pipe.
I have a good one coming up if I can get the rain footage. We installed a system and failed to connect a corrugated pipe that was working into our pipe. I was downloading the video clips and watched a few and saw it right there....not connected. I called the HO and we went back to dig it up and get it connected. Fail.

Shawn love these videos. The thing I see that you can improve the drainage is by going to 6 inch pipe verses a 4 inch in a area that has a lot rain fall. Your systems do a fantastic demonstration of saving a owner tons in water damage to their buildings. That could be a ton of money to fix
I really like the follow up videos of your work during a major storm showing what you did is working so well. Watching the outfall of each drain pipe & then realizing all that water was sitting around a home doing major damage is amazing.

I do 100% agree that PVC is better I remember back in the 1970s I was helping my grandfather help drain the driveway he used to schedule 40 piping drained directly into a concrete creek he says it works like a charm and I do agree with him

Actually a gravity feed drain is at its full capacity at the halfway mark of the pipe.Anything after that and the flow is drastically reduced And eventually becomes pressurized. Like we saw in the last video all of that water waiting to enter catch basin created head pressure.
Anyone that complains its too expensive is crazy. The long term endurance of the product and ability to clean is worth every penny. That storm footage is incredible. Thanks for putting it up. Who knew you could get a 4" flood of water out of a 4" pvc LOL. Like a dam firehose. Lets see that black or blue crap do that LOl

In Australia everything's PVC. Downpipes, sewer, stormwater, and even fresh water sometimes uses a smaller black pipe with a coloured stripe, which I think is also PVC!
(of course, water is usually copper pipes when it is inside the building)
Interesting. We have different stuff here.
I recently had renovations and the plumbers used copper on external water supply but internally they used polyethylene pressure piping which was colour coded black for cold water, red for hot and green for suitably filtered tank water collected from the roof for toilet flushing and the washing machine. I was surprised (and apprehensive) but they assured me it was perfectly OK.
Just watched for the 2nd time. I do watch others (most use corrugated). Only 1 went back. Never mind a year later. Conscientious engineers are what your team and you are. I would pay a little extra for that any day.

The basin in your best customer's garden processed a heavy hit really effectively; with all elements of the system shifting tonnes of water - I wonder what the Litre per minute count would have been!? The 6 inch pipes near the end was at max capacity you could see the drains could not cope but did catch up ( 8 inch next big job ) keep up the good work and keep the videos coming like the rain

In Australia everyone uses PVC for drainage generally. I have only seen corrigated pipe in a sock and pea gravel behind retaining walls etc.
Almost everyone uses the crappy corrugated pipe here.

I personally love these kind of videos! I'm currently re-designing my drainage basin so it can handle more capacity! I live in Pennsylvania and whenever a storm hits, driveway water finds its way to the garage. my solution is to re-dig my trench and make a basin with a cement paver lid!

Fun vid, though a lot of people are arguing against a phantom. Almost no one recommends using non-smoothwall corrugated for gutter downspouts, due to shingle debris and leaves, etc. The actual debate is PVC vs. corrugated for french drains. Especially if the french drain is wrapped in fabric, then debris is going to have a hard time getting into it anyway.
I have a fd video too. The problem with fabric is it is very very thin. It traps fine sediments against it and kills the flow into the FD. I use several inches of gravel instead of fabric for a filter. This allows the fines to flow through and out of the FD and not kill the flow.

Corrugated pipe probably has its place somewhere but whenever possible PVC is the way to go. Great video, absolutely demonstrates what a well-designed and executed drainage system can do.

what would be interesting to see (as a viewer) is the water at the end (outfall) going into a gallon milk jug and timed. Just to show that there is a lot of water draining! You know its a lot, but doesn't look like it with such a big ID. Need more! Makes me fantasize about doing my yard! haha

I’m working on directing the sump pump water and 4 front downspouts on one of our rentals we own through 300+ feet of the 4 inch triple wall pipe made by ADS!

@@GCFD it is for sure! But I am running the pipe along side of the driveway that is at already running at a gradual consistent slope the whole way down so that helps me out a lot to gain fall!

That's a serious amount of water out of that 4" pipe. We had a cloud burst like that which gouged a 35 foot long 6 inch wide 7 inch canyon in out gravelled 'parking' area in about 15 minutes. Water can be so powerful and destructive....
That was their yard before we installed the pipes! LOL
We live in the rainy PNW. I've been viewing your helpful videos for several months due to our basement flooding occasionally. This weekend I'll be picking up some schedule 40 PVC and start digging. I'm confident this will eliminate or at least greatly reduce any flooding into our basement this winter. As a DIY guy I appreciate your detailed videos. Thanks!

Mint video Shaun ,PVC pipe all the way for me mate... the reason I am avidly watching these videos is I am due to move into a 'new build' house in a few weeks; it has a downhill slope and I just know I will have drainage issues as builders always 'compact' what will no doubt be a clay soil garden; I am fearing the worst but hoping for the best and laying in all this information ready for what no doubt will be a drainage 'install' in the spring.

Classic North Carolina hard quick rain. A 4 inch pipe though is a bit small in my opinion for where it was. I would have probably asked you to install 6 or 8 inch pipe to not have that water backup at the inlet like that.
Though after it stopped raining it did drawback pretty fast. The PVC is a good pipe material to use, durable, not easily clogged internally, and so on

That is true commitment walking around outside checking the drains in the middle of a lightning storm, LOL. I remember that commercial building. That was a lot of work. What a toad strangling gully washer of a storm at the third place. Outfalls look like a firehose coming out. I'm convinced more than I was already. I think more drainage guys use corrugated because it's easier to install. Flop it in the trench. Few if any joints. Cover it up and done😱. They do make double-walled corrugated pipe which is corrugated on the outside but smooth on the inside but they are used for culverts not home drainage. I've had bad experiences with corrugated pipe and definitely prefer PVC.
@ 19:15 That pipe is almost at the state of capacity where it changes state from vented drain to siphon! Sub-contract Post10 to third-party verify your work as an accreditation. I'm 100% sold on sch40PVC and will never buy or install single wall corrugated for the rest of my life after watching all the "proof" on your channel. Somewhere in Michigan right now the French drain man is doing a video on how great corrugated pipe is. Ha ha. I think they're both great have their uses. I extensively use PVC for all my drainage and even the French drain.
I exclusively use PVC too.
