Are NATO allies as united in their support for Kyiv as they were when Russia began its invasion of Ukraine two years ago? That was the question at the top of everyone’s minds at the Munich Security Conference, where world leaders gathered to discuss the biggest challenges to global security. On GZERO World, Ian Bremmer sat down with Deputy Secretary General Mirceǎ Geoana on the sidelines of Munich to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and what the conflict means for the future of the NATO alliance.
“Ukraine is more than Ukraine, and Ukraine is more than European security,” Geoanǎ explains, “Ukraine is an indicator of the willingness and the capacity of the West to be able to cope with challenges coming from China or anywhere else.”
Geoanǎ also called the recent death of Alexei Navalny a “wake-up call” for the West and challenged President Trump’s recent comments about allowing Russia to invade NATO countries that don’t meet the target of spending 2% of GDP on defense. While he admits Europe could do better, he points out that NATO allies are well above the 2% target on aggregate due to heightened security concerns in former Soviet countries and the Baltics.
“In the end, this alliance, [which will celebrate] 75 years in the next few weeks, will be as indispensable to America and to all of us like it’s been since the inception,” Geoanǎ says.
Dig deeper: As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its third year, what's the plan for both sides as casualties rise, Europe's support wavers and US funding for Ukraine hangs in the balance? Ian Bremmer explains: • What's the plan for Uk...

The fact that all those Euro nations are signing defense pacts with Ukraine is an obvious signal that they have no intention of letting Ukraine into NATO. If NATO membership were a reality, then why have those defense pacts?

Lol, you are not very bright are you? It has been stated countless time that country in the middle of war wouldn’t be accepted in NATO. The fact that all NATO countries support militarily Ukraine and supply it with weapons speaks for itself for the path Ukraine takes to a NATO membership.

The EU has a population of 448 million people. So theoretically, it should have a military as big or bigger than the US. But the US supplies most of the military equipment for the Ukraine war. The EU is the author of its own demise.

Not true. Many former Soviet nations declared their independence. The US had nothing to do with that. Why don't you spend an hour or two researching all of it and learn about the countries in the eastern bloc who want nothing to do with Russia. Not before and not now before you they to make this war that Ukraine is fighting for their freedoms and independence something that Americans caused.

Superiority ? How? As if Russia doesn’t have air defense, no S300 or S400? I think superiority complex is what let us all down. The speaker told a lot how the West can increase its military expenses and all that. If we are really afraid of Russia threat invading us, that’s fine. But he fails to answer the question of this video . How will Ukraine win? I can see if NATO engages into direct war after all the defence investments, nato has a standing chance. But if NATO doesn’t engage directly in a war with Russia, how will Ukraine win? Even if Ukraine declares a total mobilization, Russia could still outnumber it at least 2:1 even with partial mobilization. And the weapons are par , western weapons are not any kind of wunderwaffe to determine the outcome of the war. So what’s the plan for the Ukraine to win? Keep supporting it until when ? Even if Ukraine doesn’t completely lose and maintains its territory , enters EU and NATO , with 20% of its original population. Sounds like a Pyrrhic victory at best, assuming losing half of a territory could be considered victory at all.

So, offer up whatever deal is necessary to stop the war and all the suffering. Oh, I forgot - the war in Ukraine is the only thing keeping the American economy out of a recession. Sorry, Ukraine, you drew the short straw.

So with that logic, if people speak English or any language for that matter in an adjoining country, that is justification for invasion by a western nation of their neighbor ? The people speaking Russian in eastern Ukraine may be different but they were not being physically harmed. There are many countries with enclaves of people who speak a minority language. If things were so bad for them why is it that none of them emigrated to Russia ?????

Mr.Geoana, NATO'secretary General, not only understands Russia and what to expect from Putin next, having experienced a dictatorship himself at close quarters in Ceausescu's Romania, next door, he also was for two terms Romania's ambassador to Washington and understands and knows US politics and Congressmen at highest level rather well. He gets the message much faster on Ukraine and Eastern Europe, both neighbours of Romania than any detached British or American politician that might want his job. When you make public statements like that, get your facts right. Geoana may not have Cameron's Oxford accent but he certainly is an asset to NATO's leadership.
