Personally, I’d pay more to have the opportunity to own a peace of the Tavarish car history. You rank so high up on the list. You actually work on your cars, and you drive them. All of this adds to the story. So hopefully later this year my situation changes, and I’d buy a Ford Taurus from you! Really anything……That I could afford anyway

He has been sharing the stories of his cars on his own channel for years, of course - probably in more detail than is possible here, since each car is an episode onto itself on Jay Leno's Garage.
Jay has said numerous times over the years how the story a car carries with it is as valuable to him as the car itself
      - and as a guy only 10 years behind him in age, I agree whole-heartedly.
As *stewards* of our old cars (most of us with one, maybe two - and Jay with 185!) we are also keepers of their
stories; it's our responsibility to share both with others as such, for that is the essence of the hobby itself.
Keep the hobby (and the cars) alive!

I love one of the stories Jay told about his Steam cars. Said that he had a meeting in Beverley Hills and decided to take a Steam Car so he could just park it up front and not deal with Valeting it. So he's running around in a suit helping his guys start it, which isnt an easy process. That to me is funny.

I love living next to jay lenos garage, he used to come over to our house for parties or on hot summer days. He gave me some cars and some trains with the tracks as well when i was little. I would always see him in his car and even got a ride once in the steamer car. Jay leno is a dope man and i love seeing him and his cars. He doesnt recognize me anymore cuz im old and he stopped coming after maybe 2013-15 but those memories i have are fond so i aspire to inspire those around me and also have many well taken care of cars.

One of the other thing about Jay’s collection is all his newer cars are very low numbered . I’m sure his Ford GT is very low numbered and most of his others like his SLR is low as well . He owns some very cool 80,90,2000’s cars that the newer generation are going to love that were some of the first built and at auction could bring high numbers in 10 years .

It will be a severe blow to the entire hobby when Jay leaves us one day.
Nobody else alive has a collection with this level of sheer numbers, facilities to store and
maintain/restore plus the *stories* to go along with every car that Jay does.
I guarantee provision has been made for the operation to continue after he has gone, but
at what capacity, I have no idea.
What a great ambassador to the hobby he is - and a perfect *steward* to the cars!

As of November last year it was reported by the dupont registry the collection could be worth around 52 million. Of course many things can change that number so what we've heard in this video is considerably higher. Also not taken into account are the 160 motorcycles which add a lot of value. I know this channel is for cars but they should have included the bikes as well considering they are part of the entire collection.

I would think that number is way off, his Maclaren F1 is in the 20 mill range these days. So the entire collection has to be way more. Just my 2 cents.

I met Jay at the Burbank Autobooks (yes there was a book shop just filled with repair manuals and other paraphernalia back in the day) shop back in the 1988, i was looking at the BMW books as i was restoring a 1969 2002 and Jay stood next to me looking at the Buick Roadmaster books. This was before the Tonight show and mega fame so i wasn't really sure who he was at first then i was like oh this is the Doritos guy (he did Doritos commercials back in that time). He was and is a CAR guy at heart and loves talking about cars. He could have stood there for hours sharing stories of grease deep into a car. It is one my cherished memories.

After Jay eventually passes, I hope his garage with its full collection of vehicles gets turned into a museum. One like the wheels of time museum that keeps every vehicle running. Jay likely has the best car collection in the world. I doubt that even any of the oil barrons have as incredible of a car collection as he has. If they do they haven't ever shown it publicly.

I saw Jay leno in Beverly Mass At the beginning of 2024. He was the epitome of an old school comic. Just class. Never Swore. and didn't say anything about politics and what side he was on ... He was very funny and didn't try to hurt people to get a laugh. Then at the end of the show, he had an auction and by the end, he had raised over 200k to restore the Cabot theater. (And kept none of it ) He is what America use to stand for. just a great person.

I think so many of Jay's cars are so hard to value because they are so rare that I think it's hard to find a comp. Even some of the more common models of cars that he has like a Pontiac Firebird are super rare specs like his Firebird with the inline 6 and performance handling package. Jay is such a cool collector and his encyclopedic car knowledge is absolutely incredible. Heck, I'd just love to see what the whole list of 185 cars is!

i think what makes Jays car's worth more is that his collection is one of the most documented in history mainly via his RUclips channel. It will tell the story long after he his gone. Then the details he tells and the way his restorations are done and documennted. Then lots of them are rarer. But it's the story as everyone says.

I like seeing so much love for jay Leno. When you hear other media faces and comedians talk about jay, it's normally in a way that mocks or belittles him. All that obviously comes from jealousy. But on these RUclips videos the haters stay away. It's for jay fans and more importantly car fans.
No one will ever own a collection like Jay's again. Along with all the knowledge and stories he has in his head.

If J were to decide to put the Chrysler turbine at Pebble Beach with a for sale sign, there would be a killing frenzy, oil Tycoons would do battle just to have it, because no one else has it, forever and ever being able to say yeah but does your collection have a Chrysler turbine.

In addition to the purchase price of Jay's collection, there is a lot of value added from the restoration and maintenance of all those rare and unique vehicles. When Jay talks about a car, it's not just a stationary museum piece, it's a working automobile that gets driven.

  • @warmstrong5612

Don't forget that his collection would include all the rare and unique artwork, literature and memorabilia that would be necessary to have if you wanted to create a museum. Its total value is easily over $100M if sold as a whole.

I like Ed's shrewd negotiating and the stories around that, to be honest though I prefer Jay telling his stories himself together with his mechanics and friends; he's such an enthusiast when it comes to his cars and their stories that I'm afraid these stories would lose a good part of their intensity being told "second hand", and we still will have to have the second hand version after Jay went to pit stop heaven some time in the future.

  • @Lintary
    @Lintary 2 года назад +2

The fact that his collection has a lot of basic cars in it, is what makes it so interesting and why indeed as a whole for a museum piece it would be very interesting. They are rare cars and cars with stories and those tend to linger around in ones mind vs an some number Mclaren long tail or whatever, which is amazing, but it is not really something that speaks to the long therm imagination.

What I wouldn't give to see Jay sit down for a few stories... He gives a lot of details in his videos, but he's said himself he buys a story just as much as he buys the car. I feel like there's a lot more to be told than just a review.

No one mentioned the Cunningham!? I thought for sure that would be on the list just for the chance to talk about Briggs Cunningham.
I was fortunate to see one of the original body bucks along with Mrs McKinney’s personal C3 before she passed. Lovely family and absolutely beautiful cars.
The thought that 70 years ago someone could build a few cars and go race them at LeMans, and be competitive is astounding. Those days are long over.

When I was in junior high school in the early seventies, a friend of mine's dad had a poker buddy that owned one of these that he purchased new. One evening I went for a spin in it with I think three or four more kids plus the driver in if I remember, the same color inside and out. That car and a neighbors Dino, who wound out that car to sixty mph in first gear plus a few muscle cars and a German SEL6.3 from that time will always leave an impression on me. It's interesting to note that these Italian cars cost twenty to twenty-five grand back then and that while not sounding expensive was still four or five times the price of a typical American sedan. One car in Jay's collection of many that stood out is the Citroen SM. My father was so enamored with the SM back then that he went to a dealer and test drove one. It was a beautiful car, in any color the factory had but practicality got the best of my dad, and never bought one.

Great stuff, and as always, Ficarra comes in with the best picks and background stories. I think we should extend his pick allotment to 20! As for Jay's collection, I love that he doesn't pick cars based on provenance or desirability, he just picks whatever he thinks is cool, whether it's worth 10 thousand or 10 million.
Also, it wasn't mentioned here, but I want Jay's Ford Shogun.

While it's obvious that Jay was well compensated for his time in TV....his collection is WAY bigger and better than most in Hollywood could ever afford, and he was asked how he managed to do this? His response was 'I've been married to the same woman for 48 years'. SO many celebrities go through multiple marriages and divorces with each halving their worth...it's great to see a faithful husband enjoying the fruits of his vows. Well done Jay!!

The Lamborghini Espada is one of my all time favorites. In 1973 I worked at Torvick Datsun in Santa Rosa, California. Bob Torvick owned a light metallic green with tan interior Espada. One day on an interstate in Nevada Bob took his up to 170mph and blew a head gasket. We rebuilt the engine at the dealership. We also dinotuned the engine and entire drive train. After we finish the car some enthusiast from LA showed up and bought it from Bob. I remember watching the new owner driving the Espada out of the lot, heading to LA.
Earlier that summer I drove my 1963 1/2 Princess Grace Thunderbird to the L&M 500 at Laguna Raceway in Monterey, California. I was parked next to a Lamborghini Espada that looked just like it. When we were working on the car I found the L&M 500 race program in the car. It was the same car...

One major factor is any of the Jay Leno cars will be maintained or actually drivable on day one and that should make them worth more money...when you know that there was no expense held back on any thing and they have been maintained to perfection.
