I hear you. Here's a guy who's a fantastic comic. He's also normal, married, no substance abuse or addictions ,unless you count his car and motorcycle collection .
Met Jay once. I was at a place called Ed and Vern's Rock Store. It was a little general store/six pack shop,, in Cornell canyon near Malibu. On any given weekend there was a sea of motorcycles and custom cars in and out of the parking lot. You could get a long neck Bud for 1.50 in 1989, while Malibu bars were charging 7 bucks for the same beer. Anyhow, Jay pulled in, in a 1925 Buick maybe? Something strange like that. Well the standing rule out there is; If you see stars out enjoying themselves, don't act like a tourist, leave them alone. Well, he was alone. He walked into the place, bought a beer, walked outside and stood there in the crowd. And everyone ignored him. Which he knew meant that everyone was just trying to respect his privacy but at the same time, he drove that car out there to show it off and was starting to look a little out of place. So, I looked at my buddy who was out that day with our bikes and said, "Oh this isn't right." I walked over and said, "Beautiful car Jay. What is that exactly?" He immediately brightened up and smiled. He introduced himself to my friend and asked us if we would like to check it out. We did and he took us over and showed us every inch while he told us all about it. That dude is as real as it gets. He enjoys who he is and what he does but he likes just being Jay too. Jay's a genuinely good guy and deserves all the success he has. He put in so much work before he was the face of late night america. I'm glad he's finally doing what he loves, he seems in really good spirits.
Jays stand up is the best I've seen. You can tell he only still does it bcus he loves comedy and the audience. Also sent my dad an autographed picture after, pure class.
I'm not a super regular viewer of the JRE, but I'm super glad I stopped by for this one. Absolutely excellent episode. I just wish it was the normal 3 hours long. I could listen to Jay tell those old school stories for as long as he would tell them.
Maxwelhse fuck my bad I accidently pressed reply. fucking stupid app,I have fat fingers and every I'm touching the screen I apparently press reply on youtube
I’ve seen Jay twice back in the 90s. He was the funniest best comedian I’ve ever seen. He keeps you crying laughing throughout the entire show, at a quick pace. Zero boring filler shit at all.
I know they always ruin it with who they vote for shatup do your job dont piss off half your fan base stupid aka dezero bob used to like him now cant stand his dum ass mouth hes just like trump cant shutup ha ha ha ha new yorkers
Must watch him on Maher. He thinks Biden's doing a good job. Had dinner with Austin. The one who secretly hid out in hospital as our world falls apart. I would be SO delighted to have just ONE celeb to stay completely out of either side of politics. There's so many things to talk about as he shows here without politics involved. He's very low key with what he says, but he's right there on the far left. I would the same if he were on the far right. Just sick of politics.
Joe, get Leno back on, this was by far my favorite podcast you've done. Jay is so laid back and smooth and such a fantastic teacher, it was great hearing about the art of comedy.
Great interview. Jay's always been a smart, charming guy, and I love hearing his thoughts on stuff and his stories. I wish he'd write a book. Late night has really gone downhill since he left the airwaves.

@Kevin J I dont understand what you are trying to say. Are you arguing the metric to success is RUclips trending ? Regardless, my point is more a general one. The average person has tremendously more access to tools that allow them to pursue their interests at an affordable level. I think people are lazy and like fantasizing about how productive they 'totally would be man' if only they were born 50 years ago and not today.
Met Jay around 10 years ago, within a couple minutes of talking to him, felt like we had been friends for a long time. A very down to earth and genuine person. Of course we were talking about cars & motorcycles. Aloha.
As a former A-class professional interviewer, Jay Leno himself interviews quite magnificently! Loved the time and place Leno took us to, loved his charisma and fascinating context. One of Rogans best shows ever! I just really overall loved this one. Bravo!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Just a note about being a celebrity. I met Jay about 25 yrs ago in Vegas. I was walking into a restaurant as he was coming out. He was alone, no entourage or security. I said hello and we chatted for a minute. He was filming some gags with Magic Johnson for the Tonight Show the next day and invited me to watch them live later on. I left that brief meeting thinking he was just the nicest guy. I was there for a business dinner and told the people I was there with about meeting him. Later, I excused myself early to go see the bits he was filming with Magic. One of the guys said, "You're gonna go to that?" I said, "I have to. Jay invited me personally, if I don't go, he'll think I don't like him."
Please can somebody point me in the right direction ??? I am looking for some advise on what Rogan podcasts to watch ive seen every 1 with joey Diaz on every Eddie Bravo and Alex Jones and mainly all the big names so im looking for advice on ones that were good with a person who is not that famous or not famous at all.
I'm 51, at 17 I called in to the Larry King show and spoke to Jay Leno, who was the guest. Jay is one of the few sincere leaders a young person trusts. Sharp and unselfish. Concerned about others. I learn something every time I hear him speak.
Jay is a genuine decent guy. He used to come into my work a lot and of course EVERYONE recognized him. They would yell "hey jay!" and he would wave and keep walking. He never brushed anyone off.
Totally accurate, too. Years ago I knew a much older guy that was confirmed in the mafia. He was always very nice, but you just got this vibe like this guy can just mentally collapse at any moment. There's no "off" switch in his brain. Like if most of us, if we got into a fight, if we knocked someone out that would be the end of it. This dude would've grabbed a brick and just kept hitting your face until it was mush. I always did my best to end conversations and move on. Even in his 60's this guy would probably do some damage to me. He'd be all in
The amount of comedy history I absorbed from Jay Leno is crazy. Now I understand why, although he's extremely hated, he's also really respected. Also, hearing about his early jobs explains his cutthroat mentality.
+TreSneaky Do you know if he did Duane Ludwig and Tj Dillashaw recently, after the Barao rematch? One of these days i saw somewhere that he did but i can´t find it at all. Would love to see that one.
This was a fun one. As a 36 year old, I only know Jay Leno as the "tonight show guy". I watched it for years as a teenager, and always just thought of his monologue as kind of g rated humor that wasn't really my thing but it of course always worked for the show, and it's how that format works. I had no idea how much he had worked before or any of the amazing history he casually details in this interview. Really enjoyed hearing him talk from start to finish and gained A LOT of respect for him (which is a phenomenon that seems to happen often on Joe's show, ha ha). Only knock I'd have on him after the episode is you could tell he wasn't the best listener or maybe better put he just wanted to talk mostly because when Joe would mention something ("I was a Boy Scout in New Hampshire also",etc...) he wouldn't bite on it at all. Anyway really loved hearing Jay talk and some of those stories were craaaazy!!
When studying I read and reread several times but only because I needed to have that information memorized for examinations; it was vital to remember it. If one of those textbooks that I was required to study was instead something I was just reading on my own for personal pleasure, I wouldn't read it three times. If I DID have to watch one multiple times though, it wouldn't be one with Jay Leno. It'd have to be Diaz or Stanhope.
Jay Leno would be quite tough in a fistfight cause his face is so big & heavy and leathery which is perfect for absorbing punches. I wouldn't fight him. It would take dozens of hard punches to make that face hurt enough for him to tap out.
Jay held a clinic on how to succeed through perseverance and hard work. You deserve your place amongst all of the other comedy greats. Intelligent speaker too. Thanks for the great interview.
This was really, REALLY a great episode, these two together was an interesting treat. They seem to have great natural common ground between the Boston Days etc..and just a comfortable laid back vibe between each other. I also always had a huge appreciation for Jay’s Automobile Collection and Passion for it. Great Stuff!
He's like Joe Biden but his file cabinet of a brain still opens up freely. 😂 Joe Bidens brains like them old file cabinets that get stuck and go side ways when pulling them open 😂
@FBI @Google mtn neither of them should be running a McDonald's let alone a country.i know that Joe is losing it and I'm not a conservative. I know trump is a moron I'm not a liberal. What the fuck does either one have to do with Jay Leno being funny. The way you fucking people are so divided you might as well write your comments on a piece of paper and bury it in your yard, because you aren't changing any minds, you're illustrating how petty you are.
His knowledge of automobiles and all things transportation is second to none. Although he did poorly is school Jay is extremely bright and has a memory like a steel trap.
What a great, freakin' episode. I forgot how funny Leno is. I'm so used to seeing his RUclips channel. I got to find some more shows where you have him on. ♥
Joe has this amazing gift to have a completely organic interview which in reality comes off like a casual chat and he always gets the best outta these guys. Jay is too fuckin cool great conversation.
Call me ignorant, but until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of Joe Rogan. Since then I have watched several of his podcasts and I have found them to be extremely intelligent and captivating. Some of his interviews, like with Jay Leno and Jim Jefferies are simply astounding. You don't know these people at all unless you have seen these interviews. Joe Rogan, you are amazing!
Yep. Same experience except I knew him from UFC. Best interviews going. Same quality as, say, Michael Parkinson in the UK, but the podcast allows him a lot more time to explore.
My autoshop teacher was amazing! He thought us everything! Not just cars! How to fill out job applications, resumes, how to balance a check book. One of our main assignments was a mock job interview with him, and you got the job or you didn't. He did that because no one else was... He knew most of us were never interested in going to college, but he still put more students into trade schools in many different feilds! More than ALL of the students who went to college or JC's combined, and the completion rates weren't even close to the trade school grads, including myself. Unfortunately for our town the school hated his "style of teaching" and eventually fired him... It was a good thing overall... He was able to move to a bigger school near by so he helps more kids now, many of whom are transferring from our town to have him as a teacher. As long as you tried, put in actual effort, in the shop, and classroom, you got an A. I learned more about life than cars in his classes over 4 years, and I learned A LOT about cars! A good teacher is worth their weight in gold!!
Really wish there was some kind of auto shop class in my high school. Although I try learn as much as I can, Its hard to learn the intricate details of how a car works without a knowledgeable and accessible teacher.
It's interesting you say that cuz I had a mechanics teacher who helped teach me, and probably most others, self respect and responsibility in one simple way. If you were late he'd ask if you got a late slip, so weird to think of those now lol, I'd say "yes" and go to show it to him and he says "It's ok, I trust you." And that meant allot, cuz it was my 1st taste of someone in authority actively showing confidence in me, and that GAVE me confidence. He did a few other things too but that was my lasting memory of him. Even the usual trouble makers respected him and behaved in his class.
I can't watch a single one of them. Late night shows used to be so good but now they are just cringe inducing junk. Craig Ferguson and Conan were the end of an era.
Just watched it through for the second time, one of your best shows. Joe, great job getting Leno out of character for an authentic critique of the industry and the art.
Jay Leno is sooo sharp!!! He has a really fast and sharp mind. I was once part of his live audience at the tonight show and got really impressed with his persona. Loved the "simple" man!
Jay Leno is the most misunderstood guy in show business. I've seen a lot of people trash that guy and it's always for reasons that don't even make sense. He's like that guy in high school who was nice to everyone and then got bullied because he never did anything shitty or mean.
scarygary5678 Sir, you are talking to someone who has worked in the entertainment business in Los Angeles for almost 20 years. I heard all the stories, I know most of the big agents. I seriously doubt I need to do any research. Let me guess, your knowledge comes from listening to Howard Stern and Conan O'Brien fans?
Justin: Both Leno & Conan were basically pawns to the Networks. They were competing for positions. The network wanted to make sure someone was ready to take over the Tonight Show when Leno left & they promised it to Conan before Leno was ready to leave. Leno did leave but Conan wasn't getting the ratings. Had Conan done well enough, that would have been it but ratings went down & honestly, he was awkward. He would have probably grown into it but the network decided they wanted Leno back. That's a drastically simplified version but point is, they were simply competing for The Tonight Show & Leno won. That entire fiasco was the network's fault. They were simply competing for the job.
Jay Leno would be quite tough in a fistfight cause his face is so big & heavy and leathery which is perfect for absorbing punches. I wouldn't fight him. It would take dozens of hard punches to make that face hurt enough for him to tap out.
really solid episode. For some reason, I enjoy hearing great comedians talk about the comedy business, the trade. I have no aspirations whatsoever to be one but it still fascinates me.
Jay Leno prefers regular non-Hollywood people. His garage is not too far from our home and the neighborhood bumps into him all the time at regular take out joints, in traffic, or he’ll just be cruising in his vintage cars, etc…He’s always super nice, goes out of his way to make sure he says hi back, he’s just a normal nice person to all of us broke ass people.
Jay's superpower is his insane memory... that's so rewarding to be able to just draw up endless stories, anecdotes, jokes on demand. plus, joe is very attentive and you can tell he figured out at the beginning that he is just there to listen and navigate the conversation

Jay's a genuinely good guy and deserves all the success he has. He put in so much work before he was the face of late night america. I'm glad he's finally doing what he loves, he seems in really good spirits.
This might be the best JRE episode I’ve watched. I’ve never been a huge Leno fan, but the stories and lessons here were amazing.

I’ve seen Jay twice back in the 90s. He was the funniest best comedian I’ve ever seen. He keeps you crying laughing throughout the entire show, at a quick pace. Zero boring filler shit at all.
Jay Leno is a fine example to those in Hollywood, in how to age graceful and dignified, and having fun doing it. And staying out of politics.

Jay Leno has a great voice for radio. I could listen to him rambling for hours.

Agreed, Jay's an excellent storyteller with impressive recall and impressions..
Great interview. Jay's always been a smart, charming guy, and I love hearing his thoughts on stuff and his stories. I wish he'd write a book. Late night has really gone downhill since he left the airwaves.

Regardless, my point is more a general one. The average person has tremendously more access to tools that allow them to pursue their interests at an affordable level. I think people are lazy and like fantasizing about how productive they 'totally would be man' if only they were born 50 years ago and not today.
Hands down one of Joe's best guest. More authentic than I expected.
I'm not the biggest Leno fan but he's entertaining here, engaging and authentic.
One of the guys said, "You're gonna go to that?"
I said, "I have to. Jay invited me personally, if I don't go, he'll think I don't like him."

I'm 51, at 17 I called in to the Larry King show and spoke to Jay Leno, who was the guest. Jay is one of the few sincere leaders a young person trusts. Sharp and unselfish. Concerned about others. I learn something every time I hear him speak.
Jay is so great. I am old enough to have watched Johnny too and both were spectacular on their shows. Too bad the good times ended with Fallon.
Indeed. Everyone and their sister thinks they are a comedian now. It's too saturated, too political, and totally unfunny.
Fallon. Who is she?
Higgins is actually more funny than Jimmy
There's NO ONE out there that makes me laugh anymore. How sad.
Jay should have an HBO special where he just tells stories about the old days... I could listen to this guy talk about it for hours!
Him and Joey coco Diaz should do a special together, Joey has the most amazing stories to tell , cant stop listening to him .
Ronnie Sherrick yea but Joey sucks at telling the stories even if they are interesting . It’s a skill in itself.
He never got into booze.
A biopic needs to be made!
His best story being the one when he was a young teenager and talked his old man into some upgrades on a new family car.
Jay is a genuine decent guy. He used to come into my work a lot and of course EVERYONE recognized him. They would yell "hey jay!" and he would wave and keep walking. He never brushed anyone off.
This wasn't a podcast, its was a history lesson 🤓
Wow, the stories! What a life and career Jay has. This is one of your best shows. Please have him on again!
I could listen to Leno talk all day. This was amazing. Kudos to joe to just letting him run with it, holy shit.
Holy shit... The gun story and priest story. That is just fuckin crazy.
the boy scout story...rofl
Count that as something I sure as shit didn't expect upon clicking on this video. Wow.
Dallas Farmer who was the crazy guy in that story
He's right about those people. They are psychopaths. Jimmy Fratiano talked about killing people like he was ordering breakfast.
He'd be all in
Great show. History of comedy through the eyes of Leno. Soldier of the first order with great life experiences.
man i wish Jay Leno was my grandpa, i would spend all day with him fixing cars and listening to his stories
The amount of comedy history I absorbed from Jay Leno is crazy. Now I understand why, although he's extremely hated, he's also really respected. Also, hearing about his early jobs explains his cutthroat mentality.
Rogan's on a hot streak building up to #700, Rousey and Leno in 1 week, not bad at all.

When u study , do u only read it once or u need to hear it learn a few times
When studying I read and reread several times but only because I needed to have that information memorized for examinations; it was vital to remember it. If one of those textbooks that I was required to study was instead something I was just reading on my own for personal pleasure, I wouldn't read it three times.
If I DID have to watch one multiple times though, it wouldn't be one with Jay Leno. It'd have to be Diaz or Stanhope.
Jay Leno is golden. So respected as a stand-up comedian, talk show icon, and now a great car collector, historian, enthusiast, and spokesman.
I really think this was the best of all the podcasts. Learned so much about being a comedian compared to simply being a funny person.

I have seen joe rogan in many things throughout the past 15 years... But the best one IMO is his interview with Elon Musk... Fascinating...
You never watched Fear Factor? He was the host. Before that he used to be on a sitcom called NewsRadio.
Me too bruh, Joe budden introduced him to me
Ok, ignorant.
Some people have the heart of a teacher, and some are just teachers.
"More than all the students"...?
Really wish there was some kind of auto shop class in my high school. Although I try learn as much as I can, Its hard to learn the intricate details of how a car works without a knowledgeable and accessible teacher.
My shop teacher taught me how to make a wood snowman....made of wood.....and glue....it was great.....
Jay is so needed back right now. He would be even more popular today. The late night shows are unwatchable now.
I can't watch a single one of them. Late night shows used to be so good but now they are just cringe inducing junk. Craig Ferguson and Conan were the end of an era.

If Jay writes a book, the title should be "I got heckled next to a girl in a plexiglass bathtub". I'd read that book.

+Tony Vega en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Tonight_Show_conflict
Jay Leno would be quite tough in a fistfight cause his face is so big

Jay Leno prefers regular non-Hollywood people. His garage is not too far from our home and the neighborhood bumps into him all the time at regular take out joints, in traffic, or he’ll just be cruising in his vintage cars, etc…He’s always super nice, goes out of his way to make sure he says hi back, he’s just a normal nice person to all of us broke ass people.
