  • In this episode in our series of bonsai techniques we will be covering the basics of propagating trees by seeds method. As we get closer to end of repotting season. I'm looking forward to either producing some new sapling trees or using the sapling to do some root grafting. But this process should take about an year before they are large enough to use in those processes. This video will be in conjunction of a series where we will dive deeper into Trident maple. I stratified trident seeds this past winter in the fridge, they never sprouted in the fridge like the sugar and Japanese maples do. I also stratified field, Amur, and Tatarian maples seeds that also did not germinate in the fridge. I took them out of the fridge after 3 months and left them on the counter for a couple days still in the bags and they started to germinate. The only maple that didn’t do anything for me this year was the paperbark maples seeds.

      @@itisjustmedude was the seeds still green? From both Lindsay Shiba and Ed Clark the viability of the seeds quickly diminishes with the age of the seed. So once the seed forms and before it turns brown you have to either store in the refrig for later sowing or sow immediately. Thats what happen to that particular batch. Seeds were picked at the correct time but was not sowed right after or stored properly.

      @@BaikoenBonsai you must be focusing on the paperbark maple seeds. The seeds were taken off the tree in early October, a little brown a little green, and put right into the fridge. I’ve read that those trees are not easy to grow from seeds but the seeds felt ripe like a sugar maple seed so I was hopeful. They have been sown so if it takes another year for them to germinate, that’s fine. I’ll get more seeds this year too, and I’ll space it out over a few weeks. Honestly with all the seeds that did work I’m overwhelmed so it’s ok they are making me wait.

    I've purchased trident maple seeds online twice. Once three years ago, and again this year. I planted some immediately, and stratified some in the refrigerator for three months and then planted. I didn't get a single seedling. Now I'm nursing a cutting that I struck from my single trident bonsai. I successfully grew some zelcova seeds using the same method. Oh well. Good luck with yours.

    I never understood the " starting a bonsai from seed" process, a decent presentable bonsai at a show is probably around 50+ years old. Can you guys help me out here because I see a lot of bonsai people doing it and I just don't get it.

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai  Год назад +1

      Bonsai stripped down to its fundamental is a generational art form. Yes, presentable trees age wise can take considerable time develop. Certain species and tree sizes can lead into a development stage from seed to tree; shohin to trident which grow extreme fast and aggressively can be developed in 5-10 year period easily. Hence, growing from seed and in the ground. Other techniques like root grafting and root over rock style requires large amount of quantity of 1st and 2nd year sapling. So growing from seed gives you those advantages. I'll probably make a quick clip about this subject at a later time. I hope this clears up the muddy waters abit?
