This is REAL. Thanks for including the kids and finger licking and all the real stuff! That’s what it looks like in a kitchen where kids get to be part of things. My kids and grands have fond memories of helping in the kitchen and gives them so much confidence! I love your less edited style Ruth Ann! 🏆
This is the way kids learn and yes sometimes,unbidden..little fingers will sneak in.Its not the end of the world but the start of lovely childhood memories.
Your Shoo-Fly Pies look yummy, and your daughter's hand pies look delicious. I love how your son kept looking at the pies at the beginning of the video and how happy he looked when you said he could have some. He's adorable.
Your videos are such a blessing to so many strangers. But just think of what a blessing it will be to have these videos for your children and grandchildren one day (a LOOOONG time from now) when you're not around. I would love to have videos with instructions from my MawMaw on how she cooked things. ❤
Thanks for the fun! The reason pie dough should not be worked too much is because wheat flour creates gluten. The more it is worked, the more gluten strands are created and the "tougher" the dough becomes. So, for delicate, flaky pie dough, ingredients should be worked as little as possible so gluten formation is as little as possible. Also, if ingredients are cold cold cold, the water creates steam and puffs up the fat-infused dough. Cold and gentle are the keys!
I was going to say, Harrison needs his own pie cutter but you gave him a job egg washing pies, good job mom. Both my boys are cooks and love baking to.
What I would have given to have that hand pie gadget when I was younger! My mom and I used to make fried apple hand pies to sell for our church every year. Mom always just used a saucer for the round template and a fork to close them. Worked great but the uniformity wasn’t there. Made my share of Shoo-Fly pies too! We always used molasses that weren’t black strap. Used to buy it locally. I loved the stuff! Mix it with butter and eat with a hot biscuit…..it was heavenly!
Oh Wow! That would such a treat to watch your Mom make the shoo-fly pie and a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude to her for the job well done in raising her children.
So , I have been canning and baking and such for years and years. Some of your videos I watch for information, some I simply watch just to watch~ you are such a joy ! FYI I love how you say the word "Now", it's adorable as are you. Blessings to you and your family and thanks for being you!
I had shoo fly pie twice. Once was at an Amish recipe and was delicious. The other I bought at the grocery store and it wasn't so good. I never attempted to make one. You make it look pretty simple to make. I love the kids pies too. Nice that they enjoy helping in the kitchen.
These videos are a treasure trove of family history and how too for your family to pass down. Wish I had this from my mom and gramma. Just lovely, and you are sharing with all of us, too.
Thanks for your beautiful videos. I actually live in the big city. I have not been able to shut off your videos since I stumbled upon them. It has always intrigued me to really make things from scratch. I do cook from scratch as much as I can with store-bought ingredient, but I am definitely going to try some of your videos , maybe granola and yogurt. Thank you for doing this and providing everyone with a wealth of your knowledge, Your family are beautiful hard-working people and God bless all of you. And your RUclips channel you have reached many people . 😊🙏🏼🌻🌻🌻
Kids will be kids-especially when cooking is concerned! I am 75 and love watching your videos. I have learned from your background of wisdom from your up- bringing. I would have loved to have spent time with my mother in the kitchen. She always wanted us to not be under foot when she cooked. Your children are so Blessed to have a patient compassionate mother!
I love that you show the whole process with the pie crusts. It’s very helpful to me. Thanks so much for this recipe. So nice to see the kids involved in making things. That is so important. My mom wouldn’t allow us in the kitchen and didn’t teach any of us how to cook. I had to learn on my own how to cook.
Mine allowed us to watch but that's it. No helping and no teaching. I learned a little bit taking a cooking class in HS but am mostly self-taught. Thank God for cooking shows and YT!!!
I love Shoo-Fly pie. My grandmother made them all the time, she only used the molasses, not Karo. She was Pennsylvania Dutch and loved the Chow Chow. Still looking for a good recipe for Chow Chow. My grandmother always used two forks to make the crust. My grandmother said the same never overwork the dough. My grandmother made it is smaller batches. My grandmother has been gone since 1968 and I sure miss her even now. She made great apple butter also. She made Blood sausage and head cheese sausage, but would not eat it.
I think if you crimp edge to crust before cutting off excess dough, the edge of crust will be higher and not shrink down; therefore pie filling will not expand over rim of cooked crust. almost 79 but that is how my grandmother did it and works for me
As usual I'm amazed at your talent and love the children.. The are so helpful & respectful. This looks like the perfect pie for me to make for me & hubby. Thank you, Ruthanne, for sharing not only your mother's recipe but your family too. God bless you all!
I love seeing kids in the kitchen. Lots of finger licking going on! I've heard of Shoo-Fly pie but have never had it or seen it made. It looks easy and delicious. Thanks for sharing.
You make it look so easy to make pie crusts. I have never had shoo-fly pie but it looks delicious. I am glad to see that I am not the only one holding on to pot holders that have been well used : ) Thank you for the recipe and video.
I have always heard about Shoo-Fly Pie, but had no idea what ingredients were in it. This looks really easy and delicious! Thanks so much for this recipe!
You can tell you grew up making pies! You whipped those pie crusts up with such ease .. like a pro! Plan on making my first shoofly pie for Thanksgiving. Hope mine looks half as good. Blessings💛
I'm so old that I can't think of Shoo Fly pie without hearing the Dinah Shore song in my head. Your pie making day looked like great fun with the kids.

Looks really good. I will have to give it a try. Love your son’s eyes watching you prepare your Shoe Fly Pie. And watching him eat it. Your daughter did great with her apple pies. Hearts and flowers headed your way. ❤️💐
My mom and her mom, who would use their hand, and that is how they taught me, too. Love your coing techniques and recipes. You have inspired me to want to have my own dairy cows to make my own stuff instead of buying it. Thank you, Ruthanne, for having all these videos and your recipes. ❤❤❤. I love this channel…so happy I found it! Reminds me of my childhood….my mother came from Mennonite stock, and although we did not practice the religion, we were brought up in many of the ways. Shoofly pie with a wet bottom was a favourite as well as apple butter. yummy x
Love your videos! I have a question though in regards to your pie crust recipe, it says 3 cups of flour and a cup of water .... I'm curious because when watching the video you used a little over a cup of water for the 6 cups of flour. So I wasn't sure if that was a printing error? ❤️
Such a treasure you are. A wealth of knowledge sustaining your family with. I will attempt this pie as soon as I pick up pie crust in the frozen section 😊
I’ve never had this pie before. I will have to give it a try. I like that it’s made with ingredients that are usually on hand. Thank you for the recipe. Also, I loved watching the children playing in the background. I miss those sounds!

Never seen a mom have so much control over children and not be mean about it , huh
You haven't seen many good mothers, then. How sad 😢
Its mutual respect! She is their mom NOT their friend!!
Such a lovely family , good for y’all ,work ,play and cook together ❤❤❤

My mother was the best pie maker ,just one of her talents,..and this is my favorite pie along with a cup of hot tea, thank you again 😋
Pies look amazing! I too learned from my Grandma and Mom how to make pie crust with my hands. Hands are best. :)
They say hands are the best tool in the kitchen and I couldn't agree more!
My sister in law taught me to cook and to love cooking. She said all good cooks get their hands 'dirty' in the kitchen. That's how the love gets in.
I have never had a shoo fly pie. Yours looks so good I have to try it. Thanks for your video

Oh yum! I have heard of this pie before, but never tasted it! And you know what…. it’s about the flavor, not always the looks!
That's what I tell myself when my peanut butter cookies don't have nice, defined bumps on top from the fork LOL
