This is REAL. Thanks for including the kids and finger licking and all the real stuff! That’s what it looks like in a kitchen where kids get to be part of things. My kids and grands have fond memories of helping in the kitchen and gives them so much confidence! I love your less edited style Ruth Ann! 🏆
Your videos are such a blessing to so many strangers. But just think of what a blessing it will be to have these videos for your children and grandchildren one day (a LOOOONG time from now) when you're not around. I would love to have videos with instructions from my MawMaw on how she cooked things. ❤
Oh Wow! That would such a treat to watch your Mom make the shoo-fly pie and a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude to her for the job well done in raising her children.
Your Shoo-Fly Pies look yummy, and your daughter's hand pies look delicious. I love how your son kept looking at the pies at the beginning of the video and how happy he looked when you said he could have some. He's adorable.
Thanks so much
❤
Man I LOVE Amish & Mennonite cooking videos. You guys were the first preppers. I learn a lot and the food tastes awesome!! Thank you!
❤
I was going to say, Harrison needs his own pie cutter but you gave him a job egg washing pies, good job mom. Both my boys are cooks and love baking to.
Haha, why make one pie when you can make three?! Love it. So interesting! My mom was not a pie-maker. My Gram never shared her baking secrets. And nobody in the family ever made Shoo-Fly Pie. I never even heard about it until I was much older and out of the house. It has always been a big mystery to me ~ not just the pie, but also how it got its name. Anyway, the kids are great helpers! Thanks so much for sharing your approach. These pies look really tasty. 😋
Harrison is so sweet & cute. He can’t wait to get his hands on that pie
This was my dad's favorite pie. My dad and mom were born and raised Amishm
I love Shoo-Fly pie. My grandmother made them all the time, she only used the molasses, not Karo. She was Pennsylvania Dutch and loved the Chow Chow. Still looking for a good recipe for Chow Chow. My grandmother always used two forks to make the crust. My grandmother said the same never overwork the dough. My grandmother made it is smaller batches. My grandmother has been gone since 1968 and I sure miss her even now. She made great apple butter also. She made Blood sausage and head cheese sausage, but would not eat it.
This is a new idea for me. I have heard of it, but never tasted or made one. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for the fun! The reason pie dough should not be worked too much is because wheat flour creates gluten. The more it is worked, the more gluten strands are created and the "tougher" the dough becomes. So, for delicate, flaky pie dough, ingredients should be worked as little as possible so gluten formation is as little as possible. Also, if ingredients are cold cold cold, the water creates steam and puffs up the fat-infused dough. Cold and gentle are the keys!
Yes!!
I’ve haven’t made a ShooFly pie in 40 years.😁 This extra special to watch. Thank you so much for sharing.🕊️
Some day Harrison will be a chef. He really enjoys kitchen activities.
Your Shoo-fly pie looks delicious! You're so good at making pie crust too :-) Love the little hand pie making device and your sweet helpers!
I am Surprised Ruth Ann that you do not like to Cook, Well you sure put a lot of Love into your Cooking 8-4-2023❤
From Berks County Pa. I've been craving a good shoo-fly. Thanks.
Hadassah is going to be a great cook. Learning at the hands of a master cook.
♥
I had heard the term shoo fly pie before but didn't know exactly what it was till now . Thanks for showing me.
You’re welcome 😊
So , I have been canning and baking and such for years and years. Some of your videos I watch for information, some I simply watch just to watch~ you are such a joy ! FYI I love how you say the word "Now", it's adorable as are you. Blessings to you and your family and thanks for being you!
I have never had a shoo-fly pie. Looks amazing. I love how your daughter was in there making her individual apple pies too. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Your pie making is so fun to watch, and so are your children. Beautiful.
My mother was the best pie maker ,just one of her talents,..and this is my favorite pie along with a cup of hot tea, thank you again 😋
What I would have given to have that hand pie gadget when I was younger! My mom and I used to make fried apple hand pies to sell for our church every year. Mom always just used a saucer for the round template and a fork to close them. Worked great but the uniformity wasn’t there. Made my share of Shoo-Fly pies too! We always used molasses that weren’t black strap. Used to buy it locally. I loved the stuff! Mix it with butter and eat with a hot biscuit…..it was heavenly!
Your son’s face says it all! I can’t wait to try this. I found you via the Pie collaboration. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for being here!!
She has so many amazing videos. I've been binging since I found her!
I have never had Shoo-fly pie. Maybe I can try this recipe on my own. Thank you for sharing.
Oh this totally takes me back to my childhood and my mom making shoo-fly pie. Must make this soon for my family! Thanks!
I had heard of shoo fly pie but never knew what it was. Thanks for sharing.
I've never heard of shoo-fly pie. Looks yummy!! Thank you for sharing 😊
I had shoo fly pie twice. Once was at an Amish recipe and was delicious. The other I bought at the grocery store and it wasn't so good. I never attempted to make one. You make it look pretty simple to make. I love the kids pies too. Nice that they enjoy helping in the kitchen.
This is the same recipe that is on the Tenderflake (lard) packet. What a riot! It also makes enough dough for three double crust pies.
I have never had shoe fly pie. I've heard of it but never had it. Looks delicious!
Harrison is going to be a chef. He is so sweet.
Oh yum! I have heard of this pie before, but never tasted it! And you know what…. it’s about the flavor, not always the looks!
That's what I tell myself when my peanut butter cookies don't have nice, defined bumps on top from the fork LOL
I was born in Penns Valley PA and there are a lot of Amish in the area. We have always had shoe fly pie. One of our family favorites.
I have never had a shoo fly pie. Yours looks so good I have to try it. Thanks for your video
Kids will be kids-especially when cooking is concerned! I am 75 and love watching your videos. I have learned from your background of wisdom from your up- bringing. I would have loved to have spent time with my mother in the kitchen. She always wanted us to not be under foot when she cooked. Your children are so Blessed to have a patient compassionate mother!
I have never tried this, will have to give it a go
Thanks for your beautiful videos. I actually live in the big city. I have not been able to shut off your videos since I stumbled upon them. It has always intrigued me to really make things from scratch. I do cook from scratch as much as I can with store-bought ingredient, but I am definitely going to try some of your videos , maybe granola and yogurt. Thank you for doing this and providing everyone with a wealth of your knowledge, Your family are beautiful hard-working people and God bless all of you. And your RUclips channel you have reached many people . 😊🙏🏼🌻🌻🌻
I’m so glad you are here!!!
Pies look amazing! I too learned from my Grandma and Mom how to make pie crust with my hands. Hands are best. :)
They say hands are the best tool in the kitchen and I couldn't agree more!
That looks so good!
Your kiddos are so sweet!
Thank you for sharing these recipes too!
Thanks for making these they look amazing. I have had these in the past but never knew how to make them 🥰
As usual I'm amazed at your talent and love the children.. The are so helpful & respectful. This looks like the perfect pie for me to make for me & hubby. Thank you, Ruthanne, for sharing not only your mother's recipe but your family too.
God bless you all!
Thank you so much!
I used to make a 10 double-crust recipe and used my hand mixer. It makes an excellent, flaky crust.
I haven't had shoo fly pie since I was a kid. Bringing back memories! Thanks for this video.
Love that you have the lessons from your elders. I was not fortunate enough for that but taught my self skills as I found out I needed them.
Yummy!! Can't wait to try this!
These look amazing!!
I really enjoyed this video. I love seeing the kids all helping. My kids love to help cook too! When they feel like it lol.
I just love the way you cook and the kids in the kitchen with you.
I’ve yet to try this pie but plan in trying my hand a baking one soon! It sounds and looked delicious!
Another awesome video! Thank you!
Thank you for this video ❤
This is one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing this one.
we make ours wet bottom also. Shoefly is a must as a Pennsylvania Dutch girl. My grandma would make 6 pies at a time in her kitchen that was the size of a bathroom these days. The amount of delicious food she made just amazes me to this day. Thanks for sharing your family's recipe. I always use my hands to make pie crust. Don't use a pastry cutter. Any recipes I got from my grandma would just be the ingredients. Not really amounts. I had to experiment to get them right. When I make pie crust I always bake some sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. My son would eat a large amount just by itself as his dessert.
I was taught by an older lady from Kentucky to use two butter knives. Just "cut in" the butter or whatever by making slicing X's with the knives. I do that and/or use my hands. Works like a charm.
I love watching your videos Ruthann I am 83 years old and live in NewBrunswick Canada
Thank you for awesome recipe recipe and sharing your son excitement. . Super sweet young man .Love finding all these new channels and recipes.❤
I’ve never had shoefly pie. Thank you for all of the information to make one and also the pie crust recipe. I will definitely add these to my baking recipes.
Sounds so good. Thanks for the hard work and video.
Watching you make the crusts was memorizing. So quick and efficient; you can tell you've done it a just a few times LOL. Anyhow, I've never heard of this pie, but it looks amazing.
Looks so good. I haven't made one of these in years.
What a treat! I love old fashoned pies, this one is so simple, I can't wait to make one up. Yummy!
I’ve never been able to make a good pie crust. You make it look so easy I’ll have to try your recipe. I’ve never had Shoo-fly Pie but this is something we’ll have to try. Thank you for sharing!!
I love this pie and so happy to have the recipe for myself going forward. This Pies of March collaboration has been awesome. So many pie recipe, so little time! ❤ thank you for your yummy recipe.
These videos are a treasure trove of family history and how too for your family to pass down. Wish I had this from my mom and gramma. Just lovely, and you are sharing with all of us, too.
I really enjoyed all your great tips. Your pies look so tasty!
what a great complete tutorial. the pies look awesome.
I think if you crimp edge to crust before cutting off excess dough, the edge of crust will be higher and not shrink down; therefore pie filling will not expand over rim of cooked crust. almost 79 but that is how my grandmother did it and works for me
This looks like it's worth a try! Thanks for sharing.
I’ve always wanted to make this.
I really need to practice making crusts! your pies looked great!
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing with us!! Cant’t wait to try it
I’ve heard of shoo-fly pie but never tasted it. Looks delicious- thank you for showing us this recipe & I will have to try this.

I have always heard of shoo fly pie, but I’ve never tried it, or knew how easy it was to make. Thank you for sharing.
One of my favorite pies! I once lived near Lancaster, PA, and would buy these pies from time to time. Yummo!
These look so good...thank you for sharing❤
Harrison is adorable…your daughter and you too! I’m loving your channel! 👋🇨🇦
I love your helpers. I love baking with my grandbabies. My grandson cooked our supper tonight and he was so proud of his self. And of course grandma's face was glowing with pride.😅 He did an awesome job. Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed it.

Looks great.
Yum shoo fly pie! Thank you for sharing your recipe
Love watching your family. These are the best days of your life, even the most hectic, challenging days. We love molasses, so I’ll give this a try. Thank you.
Thanks Ruthann for this, it’s odd that your moms tastes different than yours. I gave up on the food processor as well. I hope at least one of your viewers win at the livestream on April 3rd at 6pm est on the Mennonite Farmhouse channel! Good Luck everyone.
You can tell you grew up making pies! You whipped those pie crusts up with such ease .. like a pro! Plan on making my first shoofly pie for Thanksgiving. Hope mine looks half as good. Blessings💛
What a great recipe
Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
Such a treasure you are. A wealth of knowledge sustaining your family with. I will attempt this pie as soon as I pick up pie crust in the frozen section 😊
Oh my shoo fly pie! Definitely going to add this to my recipe book. Love your apron
Thank you!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to share this recipe. It's always nice to watch someone else make something and learn new technique's. Also, I was taught to use a pastry cutter and still do- I have taught both my kids to use one to. My dad learned to make pie crust from my great grandmother and he makes the best crusts. Maybe I should have him write it out how he does it
I lived in NE PA and it was on every restaurant menu. I have not tried it but know what's in the recipe could help me to want to make and try it.
It’s all hands and texture for me too! ShooFly is not something I’ve ever made before, so I better remedy that right away!
This looks simple enough for me to try. Thanks for sharing
