Then you can explain what you’re doing
Nathan is the real reality TV. Honest, informative, entertaining and frankly he accomplishes good in this world. I look forward to every new video.
thank you
Thanks for the detailed explanation Nathan. I really helps folks watching understand clearly why you do things this way also for us long term viewers I feel it’s a good refresher. 🤠
That last shot, with the sun going down in the background, was nice- pretty country. Nice boards, too.
Ty
It's a never ending cycle, the chores that is. Been living on farms most of my life. Been there and done that
Wow, Nathan. Your place seems to be becoming a regular Tennessee cat house. 😏
Man I wish my dad was still around to order up some lumber from me. I sure do miss him. You're a good son Nathan.
I agree. Truly a blessing to have a dad around later in life. The older we get the more precious moments are.
Gotta say Nathan , I just lap up your vids , I find you interesting, informative and your relaxed style suits my tastes very well . I also want to say you manage to get the occasional music in exactly the right spot to create that atmosphere specific to your creations . All in all it’s a lovely experience watching your output . Thank you my friend 👍🏴
thank you Jay
Looks like you bumped into the building with the loader. Something I would do for sure.! Best wishes.
Your new segment could be " Nathan's explanations " . I always like learning the tricks of your trade
Excellent idea or Notes From Nathan here at Out Of The Woods Sawmill & Kiln
Might could try Nathan 'Splainin' to add a bit of fun and Tennessee charm.
Best wishes to the Elliott family, including Mrs Elliott who does your diesel soaked laundry. She has a lot to put up with!
Agreed
LOL 🤣I understood the first time you explain!
lol
Nathan’s wisdom? Great video, thank you
Thanks 🙏
Fantastyczne wideo 😎💪muzyka ehh piękna 😍o naprawdę mądry facet 💪😎 pozdrowienia z Polski 💪😎🙏
I too appreciate the new segment. Fantastic!
You said it right the first time.
A happy wife makes for a happy life.
I always find your videos comforting and somehow reassuring, my friend! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks 🙏
You can get LED fixtures that will light the mill up nicely. Much better than tubes. And no more tube replacements either!
Gotta say, you're pretty good operator of that mill... 🙂
ty
Another great episode… thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Something about the smell of fresh cut pine, especially when watching this video and all the Sawmill down the road has it coming this way with the Wind
Agreed
Hi Nathan , my husband and I sure enjoy your videos. My husband used to build log homes so anything to do with wood is very interesting to him. Thank you for shaing
👍👍👍👍 hello to both of you
Nathan, I use CMT Orange Tool in my wood shop to clean the pitch off my table saw blades and it’s a great degreaser too
We call that "Natesplainin' "... At least that's what we call it in NW Indiana. 😆
😂
If you need to replace lighting go for LED strip lights. They are brighter and save you lots of $..
👍👍
That was a pretty sunset at the end of the video.
Ty
Nice 2x4"s for Dad.
when using materials and there not all perfect use the best stuff first, that was your always using the best stuff.
Appreciate your thorough breakdown, Nathan! It's immensely helpful for both new viewers and longtime enthusiasts like myself. 🙌🔍 Your clear explanations shed light on the reasoning behind your methods, enhancing our understanding and knowledge. It's like a satisfying refresher course that keeps us engaged and informed. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your expertise with us! 🤠👍
Always enjoyable
Nathan, your video editing is getting way better. What's up? Keep it up!
thanks you,
lots of work appreciate it
Like it alot, good job Nathan. Stay safe and keep up the fun around there. Fred.
Nathan, you should change your fluorescent light fixtures to LEDs.
You will get much, much, much longer life from them, with no dimming
or color change and much less energy use.
It takes a little wiring change, in each fixture, but after the first one, you'll be a pro. 😁✌🖖
Very nice work ❤😊
Ty
Awesome video. That was some nice lumber there!👍❤️
Look at converting your flouro lights to LED tubes perhaps. Cheaper to run and better options for light temperature. Run them up in the natural daylight temperature range.
For those who don't know, this is not heat output but apparent light colour. Lower temp tends to be more yellow and softer. Higher gets whiter and cleaner.
That was educational!
Pinesol works good in your water when cutting pine
Thanks Nathan. Great info. Thanks for taking the time to share.
When you come upon a 2x4 like that out in "the wild" it's probably over 100 yrs old.
😊😊😊👍👍👍 mineral spirits would work as good as diesel 😊
The cats communicate via "CATFACE BOOK."
😂
That's a lot of labor there!!!
Mantap , senang melihatnya
Nice 2 by's Harbor Freight has good price on LED lights they are bright and some models can be connected together, I have a 8 ft flo tube from Home Depot that I converted to LED and it is bright. Changing the 4 foot to LED was cheaper on power too! That was the first time I heard the debarking saw cut on your machine that's some great audio with the video... JLa
Great video!
so at what point do you GO BIG YOUNG MAN or remain a Small circumference operator?
You do a lot of work but you seem to do the Logs that Big Operators don't want to spend time on.
It would be interesting to hear about Big Diameter Log Cutting and your Operation so far.
Nathan, just for gee wiz, the band wheels for my Oscar 30 state not to use petroleum products!
Which explains why they were dried out cracking and breaking on the machine when I bought it!
The own later told me that he was using oil of some kind cut with diesel!
If I could I would use straight diesel, just for how well it works!
More excellent acoustic guitar Nathan
I see you were including boards with bark on the corners in the batch for your dad. If these were for a paying customer, would you still give them boards like that? If you did, would they be discounted for having the bark corners?
Discontinued yes or free
Fantastic
I am sure you have, but can you go over (show) the sawmill controls, in general, when you have the time. thanks
👍
Good Video and Great Content before you cut the 2X4's I thought the first 2 slab cuts would have made a really awesome counter top or Island top or even a desktop.
A sawyer I knew decades ago that had a small mill here in Oregon would save up the wane edge slabs and cut them separate from the square edge.. Bundling up the wane edge allowed him to make a waned 2x2, then 2 good 2x4, and remain a waned 2x2. This gave 2 good 2x4 and scrap. Cutting the wane edges with the square slabs only gives 1 good 2x4 from the middle, and 2 heavy waned 2x4 nobody wants. This is a real common size log. Getting 2 more good square 2x4 per log would add up over a period.
I’m rewatching videos trying to get the information for the suspenders
have you tried no odor mineral spirits instead of diesel? I use it a lot, especially for lighter fluid. Not as good as kerosene at degreasing but it works and don't stink.
Interesting
I was kind of surprised a couple years ago when I found out that one can not legally use saw mill lumber for any structural component in a residence unless it is inspected, graded, and stamped.
that depends on your local county, some rural areas have no restrictions,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Some states adopt codes and it covers the state regardless of inspections. Some states allow each county to adopt codes. Some states allow cities to adopt codes. But yes, if there is no adopted code in the State, county, municipality, or city, then build whatever you want. There are inspectors that can come to mills and grade and stamp them for a fee.
so if you dried those 2x4s from the recently-felled white pine in the kiln, what would be their final dimensions? I'm guessing something still slightly bigger than the 1.5x3.5 you find at a lumber yard?
“The Whys to the What I Do”
How do you make a living in lumber? If you sell those 2x4 to someone what would you charge? 4 bucks? So if you had 20 out of that order would be 80 dollars. Does that pay for the cost of things and still put you ahead some?
When you want to get true 2" widths on your boards do you allow for 1/8" extra for each cut you expect to make when you make your Cant? For instance, if you are going to make 4 cuts to get 5 boards from a Cant, do you make sure your Cant is 10 1/2" high? I have a manual mill so all the programming has to be done in my head. Not sure if I've seen a video where that was discussed. From an obvious newbee hobby Sawyer.
Listen again from 10:30 for about 35 seconds.
buy direct replacement led bulbs for your shop. they cost more but last forever.
I wish you had access to Cypress find out how long you have to dry storage sunken Cypress
Question, if I may, Buzz saw only used when cutting thru the bark? And thank you for teaching me. 🙂
Yes
Hello, when do you worry about the blade jamming when you do multiple cuts on a squared piece of timber without removing the boards after the cut? Or do you?. Does it depend on the weight of the log?
you don't worry, this mill doesn't care actually, very powerful,
If you had a chipper would you be able to make enough chips(from slabs) that you could sell?
probably not, not enough time in the day
Are you not able to get the truck up to the mill? Just wonder why you handle the lumber more than nesessary.
First Im gonna tell ya,then Im going to do it, then Im gonna tell ya what I did lol.
Days just dont last long enough....least the rain is gone...and the suns out..i wish at least the gas and food would go down some...give us a break..
True
Is this your full time job or is this a second job?
How often do you sharpen or change the debarker ?
De-barker does not need to be sharpened, it's blunt for a reason.
You cut the top of the log to make square and flip it over. That makes sense, but why make two, or three cuts off the top? Just more wear on the blade and fuel. Make one cut and be done with it.
Explained in video!
How do you get the smell of diesel off of you/your clothes? Regular soap doesn't seem to do much of anything, and I can't stand the smell.
Now explain the black and silver things that dangle off the back of the cutting head. I can't figure those out.
they guide the boards back and keep them straight,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Thanks.
👋🏻
Will using wet undried 2 by 4 cause any trouble when building a structure?
Depends on the project
House no
Barn yes
Paul here. Go LED, they are so much better in lumens and take less energy.
Why not use Isopropyl Alcohol instead of Diesel? That would cut sap well and won't have the long term odor on clothing.
Most likely would dry to quickly
What do you do with the lumber that has bark on it?
throw it in as a bonus
do you square every time
when sawing dimensional yes, if sawing just 4/4 I eyeball but not as picky
😄👍
Is Dad building himself a chicken house?
good ? he didn't say
Anyone get the final board count. How many 2by4’s did you get out of that log?
Simple maths. As stated at start that the log was 8' long i.e. 96", 1 BF = 144 Cubic Inches, 112 BF = 16128 Cubic Inches, an 8 foot 2 x 4 = 768 Cubic Inches, 16128 divided by 768 = 21.
I keep wondering if you have considered making charcoal using the cut off wood now waste to get another product and revenue stream…
How would he find the time?
Song ? Name? Plissss🙏🙏🙏
Oh my, you have a wife? Incredible. Don’t get yer wired beard caught in the blade.
ill keep an eye on it George,
😁I have noticed that you always seem to wear hearing protection while operating your equipment but seldom if ever, even though your logo shows it, you do not wear eye protection. Why?😁
Why ask questions he does not ans.❓ No patron participation, very limited response. Doesn't really matter, the world still turns👌
Seems rather ironic that a guy that generates as much sawdust as you do has to buy wood shavings.
well they are dry and pretty cheap, but I get it,
Man runs sawmill. Still buys wood chips for chickens and such...
Random idea: Get/use a wood chipper for your scraps. Maybe...IDK?
Are you making enough youtube money that you could hire someone to do the "chores" around the shop like mucking out the sawdust?
I am not. Would be nice 👍
Not really old , millions of dollars worth of land building and toys . My guess is his pappy is a politician
nah my parents are poor, I work hard for all I got,
Call it mansplaining 101
lol
