I agree with you Rich, I hate the attached crank. But the built-in crank is a new animal, superior above all other methods. When I first got hunting with a crossbow back in 2015, there was an advantage with wider, slower crossbows. I could pull back the bow without ropes or cranks. It was fast and easy, but discharging the arrow after an unsuccessful hunt is the drawback. Today, the built in crank is a game changer, mainly because of decocking, speed, and convenience. I hunt with the R26. Two years ago I shot a doe, two fawns were still eating the corn. I was able to slowly, and quietly crank back the bow and put in another arrow without the fawns knowing. Another doe came in 10 minutes later and shot her too. No way I could've worked that out with any other style of cocking. Rich, you will quickly become a built in crank guy. I have used all different types of crossbows and cocking methods, but to me, the built in crank from Ravin is superior.

Doc told me no more shotgun recoil and no lifting/pulling more than 50lbs. I’ve never had an issue with rope cocking and thought it was better than the add on cranks. Since the health news I’m stuck using a crank. The built in options like your Ravin and my Tenpoint are a blessing, work smooth and something I can run from a stand/saddle without being cumbersome. It’s such a step forward from the add on units that insert into the stock.

I'm 74 and a crank is a life saver when cocking my crossbow. I shoot a Ravin R 10 and it is "perfect for me" I did order an extra crank from the Ravin website right off the bat so as to have a backup crank🙂. I will say a few years ago I shot a crossbow with a rope cocking devise. When preparing to cock the bow with the rope about half way cocked the bow slipped off the stirrup and I walked around with a fat lip for a a couple of days because the entire crossbow sprang up and hit me in the mouth. It was my fault but I changed to the R 10 with a crank system.

I hunt with a Tenpoint that has a crank. I travel a whole day to hunt in a fairly remote area. I learned the hard way to always bring a spare crank in my duffel. Very easy to drop it in the woods.

I enjoy your you tube channel. I searched for a way to decocking a crossbow without discharging a bolt into a target after my hunt. My search lead to Ravin. I own a R26 and am very happy with it. You asked for other reasons for using the crank, this is my reason. Keep up the good work! Todd

Hunting scenario first is best ...
I can relate to this by experience with my muzzle loader. Loose powder compared pre-measured tablets.
Comes back to one good 1st shot.
Take your time and try your best. And if all that fails your backyard training will potentially help with the follow up.

I have a crank on my Aculeus 460, what I really like it for is decocking the crossbow. No more carrying a decocking arrow. Something about shooting a carbon arrow in the ground over and over again doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I upgraded to a crank crossbow this year (Tenpoint Siege 425). It's the only crank crossbow I have experience with, so take this for what it's worth. This crank is quieter than my old rope cocker. I had to cover my cocking sled handles with stealth strips to keep them from clanking together and making noise when I took it out of my pocket and got it ready to cock. And, I can recock the crossbow using the crank from within the stand, something I could never do with my rope cocker while in the stand. Missed an opportunity at a buck a few years back right after I shot a doe because I couldn't recrank the crossbow. So there's that. That said, a rope cocker is simpler mechanically. My Tenpoint stows the crank handle in the stock, but after hunting for the first time this past weekend (we have a 3-day velvet season in late August), the crank kept sliding out while rubbing up against me in the tree, and had I not been paying attention, I feel like it would have fallen out completely. I have a spare in my pack, which I felt compelled to buy after hearing others complain about that. But that's a design flaw. The greatest advantage to a crank, IMO, is being able to de-cock the crossbow silently instead of having to use a discharge arrow. All that said, there are pros and cons to each method.

I got into built in cranks on crossbows after getting my climbing tree stand. I didn’t feel that stable in the climbing stand and didn’t feel comfortable using a rope cocker in my climber. I preferred having both feet flat on the climbing platform at “all times”.

  • @dawheele1

I prefer the crank because it draws back the string to the same spot everytime. Sometimes with a rope cocker one can pull the string slightly one way or the other and also one can pull the string up from the rail as your drawing back which can damage the cams and axles causing limbs to break. I have a reverse draw and pulling the string up from the rail when drawing back the bow has broken my limbs before. I've since went to the crank.

Just my 2 cents: I have the Tenpoint TX440, and will be ordering a spare crank to keep in my pack.
But in a pinch, a 1/4 inch drive ratchet can be a life saver.
I would suggest a longer one to clear the stock, and also act as a force multiplier.
Wouldn't suggest doing it all the time; but it can absolutely save your bacon if you happen to have a small tool set in your truck/car.

I have and like both crank and pull rope crossbows. I've never had a problem hand drawing and cocking any of mine. The crank is nice if you are in positions that would prevent you from easily self cocking in a blind or tree stand without a lot of extra room to spare because a branch is in your way or whatever. If for some reason you would need to loan a crossbow to someone of smaller stature or with much less physical strength you also have something to give them to use. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I've always liked the ability to rope cock a crossbow but I will say, also having a detachable cranking device has come in handy depending on different stand locations and tree stands where I can't get a really good grip on the foot stirrup and I worry about not getting a smooth draw with a rope cocker. Owning TenPoint previously, I was always concerned with something going wrong with the built in crank and not having a way to cock the bow but I think the future will be all cranking crossbows as speed increases.

  • @keiththompson2289

my new vital x was too rough to rope cock last summer when i got it, so immediately ordered the ki crank and have never looked back. takes a little forthought and practice to get the hang of it, but alot easier on the back and torso at my 5'9" height! you still have to be careful with various body parts/safety. tangled lines are about the worst of it.....just go slow and pay attention to keeping it squared away and safe.

I went with the cock/decocking Tenpoint because due to suffering sudden cardiac arrest last December, I now have an implanted cardiac defibrillator.
I had to give up a standard bow due to the risk of dislodging or breaking the leads in my chest.
The internal crank is allowing me to enjoy archery season, and still get out there and hunt!

I feel your pain with the missing crank. In my case my youngest ran off with it and squirreled it away in some damn place or another, and he did it the night before I was leaving for a hunt. Thankfully with the TenPoints you can just use use a regular ratchet and it works just as well. Definitely not as convenient, but it works if you're in a pinch.

I bought the 10 last year. Never got used to shooting it because I sighted it in and went hunting. I have a super long draw length so I have to get used to pulling that thing into me because it’s small and it’s probably one of the biggest Ravins. I like being able to crank it down instead of shooting it after each night after hunting. I also like being able to hold the button in while cranking so it’s completely silent. I passed up the higher models just because they ALL had horrible reviews of them “blowing up” while hunting…just from sitting. The R10 I was told by several Ravin custom service reps last year it was the one…and the only one to buy out of all their models offered. I’ll be anxious to see how the 29 does for you long term.

I’m 24 and I have a lot of years left in me before I need a built in crank system, I’m currently using the centerpoint sinister 430 which actually does get 430 fps with a 400 grain bolt. ( I was very surprised as my history with centerpoint has been dodgy ) but I like that fact that it has a semi built in crank that i can also just not use and also pull with a rope. the crank is bulky and slow but I love not having to stand up everytime while taking shots in prone positions I can just use the crank load a bolt and shoot no moving, I only say this because that is how I like to hunt turkey, I bring a nice padded shooting mat out with me a few bolts, all the rest of the essentials, calls, decoys and such and just wait for them to come in.

Many crossbows need a crank they are such a high draw weight you can’t rope cock them. We I mean there was a time when you could cock them with your feet and arms can’t really do that anymore either. Once you get past that 225 draw weight rope cocking is hard.
300 plus draw now you need a crank. And most are built in now too which is helpful. They even got places to put the handle so it’s all right there on the bow. I am not a fan of cranks but I acknowledge that any modern crossbow now will have them. Especially of the excalibur line.

I have been looking for a new xbow for a month. New offerings are overpriced and over complicated. I almost bought the Sub1 until repair guy tells me he replaces cams frequently. Apparently the string loops through the cam with a 90 degree turn. That makes s a bad design for 2k$. Ravin and 10pt have must crank systems, moving trigger housing, special nocks, overpriced….no thanks.
I ultimately landed on Excalibur and I am very happy so far. Light, compact, rope or crank, durable, simple, well-priced. Its for my wife, but i’m pretty sure i will be buying another one to replace my Barnett.
What happened with the Scorpyd? What happened with the Swat? Why so many purchases? If these others xbows suck you should tell us.
    Like the videos. ;)

Have to have multiple crossbows setup for different purposes. Also you need backups so when something breaks or needs new strings/cables you aren't out of the game by simply grabbing another from your collection. In addition if you have someone who wants to tag along you have loaners to hand off to them.

@@JohnDoeEagle1 What different purposes? Do you use one as a hammer? I only shoot stuff with mine.
I’m just kidding. I guess you might want a red dot only set up. Or a super light set up for stalking. IDK. I have 3 now and i want another one.
But i want his opinion and experience on these other bows that i almost bought just bc he said they were good. And viola, another new one.

You can't use the same setup for deer, rabbits, squirrels and groundhogs. Also some shots are close in while others are further away.
The William Tell Archery Mini Striker mini crossbows and Ballista Bat mini crossbows have the whole rabbit and squirrel thing wrapped up nearly exclusively.

I Ravin (so far) and fancy scopes (the way of the future) and fancy mechanics (also the way of the future). I also love the SWAT X1 and still have the Scorpyd. If you follow Death by Bunjie you should know that I am not bashful whatsoever about giving you my opinion when there's something I don't like. I don't like firenocks or fixed blades. Not a big fan of outdated equipment either although I will still use it if it has the fancy scope. 😂 oh, and a heavy enough Arrow to make my Swahackers work!

My Barnett came without a crank. Surprise, nobody can rope cock it. $100 extra because the Barnett I bought only has a rope sled cocker. Major fail by Barnett.

ohhhhhh look at me I am tall and can rope cock even with bad shoulders. LOL just kidding. There are more steps to a crank but since I hve to use one I just live with it. I don't like the TenPoint storage for the crank because it can come out but not needing to shoot it to uncock is the biggest advnatage. Looking forward to the video on the Ravin R29.
