    I detest cold now. I am looking into the newer battery powered vests and socks and stuff for next year just for sitting in that tree stand. Been an outdoor, in the cold kind of guy all my life but as I get older (I'm retired) I just hate the cold with a vengence now. Went muzzle loader hunting today but poked all day, could not bear to wake up in the dark and sit in any of my tree stands,20 degrees and windy. So poked into new places into the wind to keep moving and keep warm.

    A pop up ground blind will insulate you some from the cold, wind, rain. A small propane heater will also work wonders inside the blind. Disposable hand warmers. I also have a 20 year old pair of icebreaker boot blankets. Still brand new. If you need too in a blind you can take your boots off and slip your feet directly into the boot blankets with hand warmers on the inside. My heater is an old coleman catalytic that runs on the small propane bottle. Yes a pop up ground blind is the way to go.

    MPO is light to medium rain is the hunters friend. It cleans all the scent on the ground and in the air. Non domesticated animals still have to forage for food. Deer eat 7 times a day. That means you have a good to great chance they will be moving in the rain. While it's raining you have the benefit of sound. The rain covers your sound. You have a great to best chance of deer movement after the rain stops. The first hour after the rain stops, you still have really good scent protection. You still have really good noise reduction as wet leaves are quiet, wet sticks and twigs bend more than snap and break. Wet ground gives you tracks to follow. Water dripping of trees and branches make so many distraction sounds it's hard for the deer to focus on just you. I don't like hard heavy rain because it makes other conditions dangerous. The gear maintenance is spot on. The clothing recommendations are also what I like in the cold. Hopefully you see some late season monsters. Merry Christmas you two.

    I shoot a Mission MXB400 Once it gets under 45 degrees the it starts to shoot low. Left and right is still perfect. I hunt in Wisconsin so it can get down to the single digits. I made a spreadsheet and start shooting at different degrees. 80 degrees to 45 degrees it shoots dead on. At 40 degrees I had to click the scope up 3. I did 35 degrees and had to click it another 3 clicks up (Total of 6 clicks so far) After many shots and different temperatures it kept being 3 more clicks for every 5 degrees colder it got. After 3 years of doing this, my calculations still works. I have a card in my crossbow case for temperature and how many clicks. So if it warms up, I see where I last marked it on the sheet and I can just click it appropriately to get it to that certain outside temperature. I do shoot it during the season to make sure everything is still shooting right. I reached out to Mission and asked them and they stated it should still shoot very close with little drop at those temperatures. I also had another friend that shoots the same thing and he had the same issue. It was 10-15 degrees out and he missed a doe at 20 yards. He shot right under it. This guy doesn't miss and he shoots some monsters in Buffalo County. So that is the only issue I have with the Mission MXB400. Here is the response from Mathews/Misson

    Hello, I have a jacket and trousers for extremely cold weather that can be actively heated with a power bank. This is ideal, especially if you can't move in the cold for a long time in order not to make any noise. You can get them online pretty cheap. Another question, what do you think of the trend to hunt small game with the micro pistol crossbows (FMA Supersonic Reverse 400fps)? Hunting with bows and crossbows is unfortunately forbidden in Germany, for my part I shoot both at 3D targets in competitions and hunt with firearms, so I am also familiar with hide hunting. What would be really interesting is how very heavy snowfall or heavy rain affects the point of impact at different distances, I have observed that at longer distances (60-120 meters approx. 70-135 yards) it affects the trajectory enormously (of course only on targets)

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  2 года назад

      I agree, the longer the distance, the more time the arrow is in the air and therefore the more time that gravity and even snowfall can affect the arrow flight. I'm not familiar with hunting small game with those pistol crossbows, really don't have an opinion on it but I should check it out. I've killed a handful of squirrels with a regular crossbow though LOL

      Great question, probably the same reason the bridge freezes before the road, air circulation lets them Reach the ambient temperature? I think if you put an insulated carpet between your feet and the tree stand it can help, because at least the cold metal is not trying to heat up using your body heat.

No reason to start with older slower equipment. No harm in starting out in a ground blind, either! Practice out of it even. I´m happy for you that you have only lost some SD cards thus far, which are also expensive.Rogues, can't understand why one gets a thrill from stealing from others, except maybe the feel of power over others in the heat of the moment, very sad that there are such low in character individuals, anyway I enjoy your videos, and learn tremendously from them, thank you for investing your time in making the content.

    Given the choice, I would pick a blood trail on snow over any other surface. The contrast of the smallest drop of blood on fresh white snow is hard to beat any day or night. As a Canadian, the best 2 cold weather tips are 1) wear multiple layers to prevent sweating as much as possible and 2) go outside during the colder day before hunting season to give your body an opportunity to acclimatize.

      Great tips, and the only problem with snow that I can point out is that if it starts snowing after your blood trail, it will cover it up

    I have a top of the line hand held laser range finder. $350. It does not like snow or tall grass or brushy stuff. I always take a few quick button pushes just because of how many times it's ranged on a stick or something. $350 ? Should not do that but that's the deal.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  2 года назад

      They are hit and miss I don't know what's up with that, in the woods I always do a reality check before I pull the trigger, with the scope that I use now I just keep clicking the button and make sure the numbers make sense haha

      @@Deathbybunjie you know, in a familiar spot, you already have an idea of yardage, and having hunted for years you have that skill set to estimate yardages so when you use your range finder and it says 20 yards and you know it's 40 something you quickly can discount it and press the button again. No technology is flawless. In new spots I just use my 'Spidey Sense' on yardages to see if the range finder confirms my estimate and get me an exact yardage. I 100% know in brushy spots the thing flat out won't work. But it works good enough and often enough that I take it with me. Still kinda hurts that $350 for a top of the line thing is not bullet proof!

    If nothing else put the ground blind up down wind of the deer trail and run your Buddy heater inside. Even with the window open you will still get some extra heat and keep the gear protected. May not get the big buck to come by, but does will come by. Either that or stay home and eat meat from the store. If you are dedicated then by all means go hunt and clean up your gear afterwards. It's not all bad, just be smart about it.

    Do not sit on the ground...one it is noisy and two it's hard to swing a crossbow/firearm into position....I've missed chances at some big bucks sitting on the ground...sit on a seat attached to a tree if you have to sit on the ground sit on an insulated cushion... I've sat on the ground in cold weather and my butt unbeknownst to me was frozen to the ground...I wear the best long underwear and I love my under armour it's expensive but you aren't wearing bulky clothes I have 3 sets...one for fall one for winter and one for late winter January February...it's made so you don't sweat and get cold when you sweat..I wear muck boots if your feet sweat bring an extra pair of socks...we acclimate our bows and firearms by leaving them outside in the truck porch or deck whatever is safe and easy for you...

    You stated you were hunting the PA state game lands? Did they open up the entire state game lands to drive through like the did in western PA? For 30+ years western PA games lands were gated off to foot access only. The true hunters walked 1-2 miles in to a hunting sanctuary that was always protected from this and you always saw deer. This year I had the opportunity to hunt rifle opener with my father that I had not been able to do with for a long time. We arrived way early and as we started our hike in noticed vehicle after vehicle flying into the state games lands. loads of orange piled out of moving cars to run into the woods. We never saw a deer and with all the shooting expected to see nothing but deer piles out on the main access road.. Nope just orange penguins who were flinging lead at any flash they say. Not only did PA game commission make this area unsafe, they also allowed trash dumping and road hunting. The edges were littered with pop bottles and wrappers.. you would think this was a good chance for them to patrol the area... but NOPE not a one all day. why would they want to chance getting shot. They completely ruined what used to be a great and safe hunting area.
