Hi Steve, this is great and very informative. Its the exact puzzle i am having with my MK2. Its a 1962 but has had a later engine fitted so the cam shaft doesnt have the drive slot for the rev counter generator, which i went and bought before i check the cam shaft. So on the basis of what you have done here i have bought a S1 xj6 RVI rev counter. I understand the circuit diagram theory thats all good and can see your test demo all works good. My question though is in practical terms how do you wire this in. Where are you cutting the ignition wire to put the rev counter in series ? Is it near the ignition key or are you going to run a cable back from the wire up to the rev counter and then back to the coil. Also practically how are you taking a live feed from the fuse box. Sorry wiring and electricals are very weak for me so need to understand in the simplest terms. Great videos though very helpful keep them coming

Hi Dan, glad you got something from the video. I have not yet installed the Rev counter as the dashboard needs refinishing. My best advice is to get some help from someone who is confident with vehicle wiring, there are mobile automotive tech guys that could come to you. We all need some help with specific area’s from time to time I certainly do. 🔧👍

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 well Steve with a bit of perseverance, and patience, i got the rvi counter working this afternoon, i took 12v feed from the ignition key by putting a piggy back spade terminal on it for the live, when the key is switched to ignition and then temporarily connected up some cables with spade connectors and connected the counter in series as per your diagram, and it worked first time so very happy with that. I now need to trace that wire behind the dash so i can put it in series near the dash without runnign cables backwards and forwards. However the theory and practice have worked.
Thanks very much for this video !!! Great work

Thanks for taking the time to record this video. Trying to get the tachometer in my Teal Bugatti working- it has jaguar dials so this is just the ticket!. I would be interested to know if I converted to an Accuspark electronic ignition would that count as electonic ignition that you discuss?

Thanks James glad you got something from this video my best guess is that the Accuspark wouldn’t drive a RVI tach but haven’t had any experience with that set up, you would be best to talk to someone who has or just give it a go!

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 Hi Steve. So I got my rev counter working yesterday by following your wiring plan. Very chuffed. Thank you again !

Hi. Just took my car out for a spin. The rev counter counts perfectly to 2500 and then seems to “stall” and despite the car revs rising the rev counter drops. Any thoughts?

Hi James you need to check the polarity of the white wires that sense the pulse from the coil, my tach ran backwards when the engine was reved up although it would read a fast idle ok as I had these wires reversed. Also don’t presume your tach is ok unless you have seen it working elsewhere, even new kit out of the box can be faulty yet alone a 50 year old gauge 👍🔧🔧

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 Thanks Steve- tried reversing polarity but the tacho didnt work at all.
