The Paris opera costume reminds me of a stained glass window! Like if their costume manages to resemble both a bird and stained glass, I’m pretty sure that means they nailed that male ethereal role 😂
I am not surprised Bolshoi and Paris Opera were once again competing in the final round ☺️ the reason why they are so similar (and definitely so beautiful!) is because they come from the same costume designer which is the Italian Franca Squarciapino. If you notice the overall look of both productions, you will notice that they are practically the same; as for the sets as well, since they were designed by her late husband Ezio Frigerio. I am a dancer with the Polish National Ballet and we actually have their version/look/aesthetic as well in our SB production here in Warsaw! to perform in such costumes is definitely a treat for both the dancers and the audience ☺️ Keep up the good work! 💙 Loving this new series and your videos!
at Paris Opera they also have a huge Atelier Production for their costumes, hats and wigs, and this is a must for good quality. Also the haute couture brand Chanel is designing costumes for the Etoiles dancers for special events (like Dances at a Gathering, etc...).Ezio Frigerio did some awesome sets and décors, for exemple for "La Bayadère", they are still used nowadays at POB.
But before you announced the winner I watched recordings of Bolshoi and Paris and I totally agree. Paris was just so much more striking, especially in motion!
I just saw this costume on the regional tour and although I think it leans slightly towards teal, it did not look as green in real life as it does in the picture.
Ooo I like the Royal one more than Australia tbh. And Again Bolshoi over Australia. The construction is immaculate. Paris Opera and Bolshoi are pretty equal to me though.
Im so excited that you guys did Boue Bird for the costume showdown because it's one of my absolute favorite characters in Sleeping Beauty next to the Lilac Fairy. I have a suggestion for another showdown, how about the Sugarplum Fairy. There are so many versions and color schemes out there from all around that Km sure it would be an epic showdown.
First round, Australia style is nice but with Royal ballet the blue color . However, I would have chosen royal because, I just love that company, especially when Matthew Ball was the bluebird. I pt was very tough, but preferred the Paris Opera.
Big shout out to the Atelier Dept. of POB! Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino designed the scenery and costumes for POB, La Scala and the Bolshoi productions. This is why the Bluebirds are similar. Ratmansky's reconstruction for "The Sleeping Beauty" at ABT was based on the London 1921 production by Diaghilev and Les Ballets Russes.
I'm glad you mentioned that - I immediately thought of the Bakst designs. BTW the original Bakst Blue Bird tunic from that production is now in the Australian National Gallery with quite a lot of Ballet Russe costumes. searchthecollection.nga.gov.au/object/75457?keyword=bakst&includeParts
I was all in on Australian Ballet from round 1 and my soul hurt when you cut in favor of Bolshoi. (I don't like the T-shirt hem of the Bolshoi even though the rest is lovely.)
The Mariinsky is just so minimal in design when it comes to its costumes. On the other hand, Mariinsky actually has 2 productions of SB in its repertoire, the 1952 revival by Sergeyev, and the other one (which is rarely performed) is basically a revival of the original 1890 production by Vikharev. I wonder what could be the reception for the "recreated" 1890 Bluebird costume??
It seem to be an occupational hazard for protagonists in Russian ballet to be turned into some kind of bird. It would most likely be necessary for the main Russian ballet houses to have a consulting ornithologist on a retainer for quick intervention in case of emergency. It could also be advisable to take the feather shedding season into account in planing the repetoire. Otherwise the great white acts in Swan Lake could easily end up as an embarrasment. Not to mention the black swan in act 3. It would not be pretty with loose feathers all over the place.
Awesome video!! Costume showdowns are by far my favorite series of yours. Could you consider making a video that serves as a guide on hot to watch famous ballets? I am starting dance (ballet specifically) in a few months and want to watch ballet, but there are so many options! Which should you watch first? Which are less common but very important to understand? I have watched Nutcracker but i am lost where to go next. Regardless, keep up the amazing work ❤
You know when you see a cute animal, a bluebird in this case, and you’re overwhelmed with awww so cute? I think the Australian ballet was the only one with a sprinkle of that cute aspect
This has to be my favourite series on the channel! I would love to see the Act I Giselle costume showdown, the takes on that one are so varied! Also a bigger bracket, it would be interesting to see like 16 or even 32 costumes. The Royal Danish Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, there are a lot more to choose from!
nooo I love the royal costume 😂😂 it’s so fun to watch you guys analyze these costumes!!!! If you stay on the sleeping beauty track with costumes,it would be so fun if you did lilac next! Kitri, Gamzatti, and Swanilda would also be rly fun to see. I love this series and I hope you keep going with it!!!!!
For the Australian Ballet's costume, I think the shade is called peacock blue iirc from my pencil crayons set in elementary school. It was my favorite color! Having said that, it is not the correct shade for a bluebird, but I love it anyway. That you two found the correct shade for the two clothing pieces you are wearing is also rather impressive ! 5:36 I also love the king's wig in the background! Thank you for a very entertaining video, which was also very educational about the ballet! Your editing is a marvel! 🙏🩰🎶💕🎭✨
I am sooo grateful for the serendipity that led to me stumbling upon your site. I look forward to each new video. Thankyou to everyone at Ballet Reign. 😺😺😺
I would like you to consider the productions of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, that are locally made and its reknown worldwide for its dance school where many great ballet dancers come from. Love the channel!
I prefer the Bolshoi--the Paris looks a little heavy. You can only really judge the costumes when you see them in motion. So I'm going out tomorrow to buy the Bolshoi costume.
Im gonna dance a bluebird variation very soon in a summer-workshop for Solo-Rep at my ballet school. This video is perfectly timed like always. Do you have the ability to read my mind😂 ??
Merci beaucoup pour l'Opéra de Paris ! it is true that the costumes at POB are usually very beautiful and I don't say that because I am a Parisian girl, I try to stay neutral in my judgements ! I was very disappointed by the costumes of the Mariinsky, what's happening to them ??? and also ABT is too much kitsch, maybe they want to attract a younger audience ????
for me the best costume is Nikolai Tsiskaridze’s costume. I urge you to search up for it. I think that I like it because from my opinion it suits the style of Sleeping Beauty the most. 🌸 Love your videos 🌷
You are both so sweet and so fun! All the editing and inserts of the costumes on stage was wonderful. :) Swan Lake/ Odile next for a costume comparison?
Hi girls, I’m Australian and I do not the costume at all! It doesn’t look blue to me but the costume itself looks messy somehow. Perhaps not s good look to vote against the ‘home team’ but the Royal Ballet wins this hands down . Sorry Australian Ballet. Try again. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Hi there, I hope you can help me. I'd love to read a full ballet commentary on Coppélia, La Esmerelda, or La Bayadère! I'm twelve years old and getting ready to start dancing on pointe, but I'm lacking a solid core. What advice do you have for me? I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts.
Sure! Make planks your best friend; front planks, side planks, and backwards planks. And any Pilates core exercises are gonna help so much ✨✨ hope this helps! ☺️☺️
@@balletreign I would be pleased! I really love this bluebird pas de deux (that's my dream part, ladies, if I would have ever the chance for dancing ballet parts in my life (; ). Great ranking here, I love how you spotted details (and the Australian Ballet interprets indeed the bluebird more human, as the prince's best friend in costume, as he also appears already in Act 2). My favorite is actually Bolshoi (both the newer and also the previous version - as this was my first Sleeping Beauty I saw- I had on DVD, actually my first ballet DVD in my life), and I fell in love with the music before even watching the full pas de deux because I remembered the Disney movie...
У меня для вас одно пожелание - когда будете сравнивать костюмы других персонажей - можно немножко рассказать об истории балета и если есть возможность показывать костюмы первых испольнителей данного персонажа
So I went and looked at bluebirds (the ballet danseurs, not the feathered ones!) and found a very old clip from the Bolshoi which is clearly a much older production. The costume was ... so-so, but the danseur ... omigawd. This is a proper bird. Ladies and gentlemen, i give you the incomparable Nikolai Tsiskaridze: ruclips.net/video/IOE1AM4sjXY/видео.html
i thought all bluebirds had orange breasts (so i was looking for orange in the costumes) but it seems the mountain bluebird is blue and white (made this comment before finishing the video obvs)
Really good girls, I agree it’s the Paris Opera, it looks lovely on stage. As a by note - what on earth is happening to Marinsky. They’re moving more into a theatrical troupe than a ballet company! Even their classes look like productions. Not interested in watching anymore. Once they were so ethereal and balletic, sad. Just an old ladies opinion though 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
If you ever do another costume comparison video, some costumes I might like to see are Firebird, Sugarplum fairy, Odette/Odile, or Kitri!
Great suggestions! Thanks! ✨✌🏻✌🏻
Ooooo, Firebird especially!!!🐦🔥
Since they're on Sleeping Beauty, they should do Lilac Fairy next
The Paris opera costume reminds me of a stained glass window! Like if their costume manages to resemble both a bird and stained glass, I’m pretty sure that means they nailed that male ethereal role 😂
Paris Opera has the haute couture fashion houses to collaborate with costumes. They will always have an advantage just because it is Paris.
Good to mention the designers! Give them credits :-)

Not me literally screaming at my screen as you eliminate Royal Ballet FIRST 😭😭😭😭 idk, it's just the company I love the most I guess!
But before you announced the winner I watched recordings of Bolshoi and Paris and I totally agree. Paris was just so much more striking, especially in motion!
Haha all of the costumes were lovely in their own way! Seeing the costumes in action is totally different ✨
Australian looks to be in the green spectrum rather than blue.
Def very teal 👍🏻👍🏻
I just saw this costume on the regional tour and although I think it leans slightly towards teal, it did not look as green in real life as it does in the picture.
Bolshoi over Australia… Paris over Bolshoi.
Ooo I like the Royal one more than Australia tbh. And Again Bolshoi over Australia. The construction is immaculate. Paris Opera and Bolshoi are pretty equal to me though.
Peacocking has never been so literal!
😂😂

I have a suggestion for another showdown, how about the Sugarplum Fairy. There are so many versions and color schemes out there from all around that Km sure it would be an epic showdown.
they can start with 20 costumes and have an hour long showdown lol
Jospeh's feet are so insane, I was in aw the first time I saw them
*speechless* 🤩🤩
First round, Australia style is nice but with Royal ballet the blue color . However, I would have chosen royal because, I just love that company, especially when Matthew Ball was the bluebird. I pt was very tough, but preferred the Paris Opera.
I did smile, because Matthew Ball is an Aussie too. Such a brilliant danseur
Paris Opera Ballet's costumes are always magnificent.
i hope you put pics of an actual bluebird to compare! hahaha
Haha don’t worry 😉😉
Talk about the bluebird in your back yard! Vive le opera ballet!
Big shout out to the Atelier Dept. of POB! Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino designed the scenery and costumes for POB, La Scala and the Bolshoi productions. There will be much more coming your way soon ✨🫰🏻🫰🏻
I was all in on Australian Ballet from round 1 and my soul hurt when you cut in favor of Bolshoi. (I don't like the T-shirt hem of the Bolshoi even though the rest is lovely.)
you guys need to do this with the classic sugarplum!💕
The Mariinsky is just so minimal in design when it comes to its costumes.

I agree fully on this one. Such a beautiful costume!!!
Having done bluebird this year, these costumes make me so jealousss🥲
Haha these were pretty stunning costumes 😂😂
YESSSS this is exactly what I was hoping for!!!
It seem to be an occupational hazard for protagonists in Russian ballet to be turned into some kind of bird. It would most likely be necessary for the main Russian ballet houses to have a consulting ornithologist on a retainer for quick intervention in case of emergency.

Very humorous & good point about always being turned into some type of bird!

Ahaha 😂😂 thanks for watching and for ur suggestions! ✨✨
I would love the tunic and hat from the Bolshoi with the ombré tights from the Paris Opera.
The Australian costume color is not bluebird blue. Royal Ballet and Bolshoi costumes are best. In my opinion.
Oh!!! When you said the most iconic male character role, I immediately thought of Carabosse!!!
For the Australian Ballet's costume, I think the shade is called peacock blue iirc from my pencil crayons set in elementary school. It was my favorite color! Having said that, it is not the correct shade for a bluebird, but I love it anyway.

As an artist who designs costumes just for personal satisfaction, this is so interesting and fun
Yes! I loved the previous video and I’m sooooooo exited to watch this one! 🎉
It’s gonna be fun! See you soon ✌🏻✌🏻
I think Paris Opera Ballet always has beautiful costumes; but my pick would be the Bolshoi one.
I'm so excited!
Thanks for coming today!! Loved having u😆😆
I prefer the Bolshoi--the Paris looks a little heavy. You can only really judge the costumes when you see them in motion. So I'm going out tomorrow to buy the Bolshoi costume.
Omgggg 🤣🤣💙💙

It’s the Ballet Nerd telepathy ✨✨ Best of luck with your performance!! 💙💙
Thank you 🫶🏻
Excellent! Thank you so much. (I would love to know how you did the accurate scientific colour analyses).
Could y'all do this maybe with sugarplum
Yes! 😄😄
Do love your editor!!!!
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dream of
Dreams really do come true
Awwwww 💙💙
I knew either Paris opera or Bolshoi would win!!! You girls both made excellent pointes and I agree with the winner of this showdown !!!
Ahahaha you called it 🤣🤣 thanks for watching ✨
for me the best costume is Nikolai Tsiskaridze’s costume. I urge you to search up for it. I think that I like it because from my opinion it suits the style of Sleeping Beauty the most. 🌸
Love your videos 🌷

Just got my Ballet Reign merch in white... now I want it in light blue as well 😆
(I got the half zip cropped hoodie and am OBSESSED ❤)
Yay, thank you! That one is our favorite!!❤️ Yes, they need to come out with light blue as well 😊
new ballet reigh video = time to sew pointe shoes
Once again, excellent presentation. Thank you, looking forward to more, BRAVA!!
Thank you!! 😆😆✨✨
I’m actually preparing for sleeping beauty in my ballet school
That’s amazing! It’s a privilege to dance the classics ✨✨

Paris over NYCB without a doubt.

@@balletreign Thanks!
Sorry I missed you guys this week, but you had a lovely showdown. My own personal favorite was the Australian Ballet, but all of them were beautiful.
Never forget also the animated bluebird from the Disney movie (;
will there be a part 2 with ranking Florina?
We could def do Florine’s costume another time! ✨✨
@@balletreign I would be pleased! I really love this bluebird pas de deux (that's my dream part, ladies, if I would have ever the chance for dancing ballet parts in my life (; ). Ps The word "shenanigans" is definitely not used often enough 😊
У меня для вас одно пожелание - когда будете сравнивать костюмы других персонажей - можно немножко рассказать об истории балета и если есть возможность показывать костюмы первых испольнителей данного персонажа
Please do this with Gamzatti or Nikiya 🥲
You both are overthinking! Aqua is not the color of real bluebirds!
J&E: debating Bolshoi vs Australian
Me: it doesn’t matter, Paris Opera will win 😂😂
Loll you know us too well 😂😂
I really enjoyed these videos. Can you please do Giselle next? 😄🩰

Yes bolshoi a paris.
Oh dear! I foresee a very controversial video here.....looking forward to it with anticipation 😉
See you soon!! 😆😆
Rip royal ballet, you deserved to go so much farther
Bolshoi
wait no SF Ballet this time??? i'll just have to go look up their bluebird
oh my gods the glitter xD
i thought all bluebirds had orange breasts (so i was looking for orange in the costumes) but it seems the mountain bluebird is blue and white (made this comment before finishing the video obvs)
What happened with the Royal Ballet?
The ABT costume is awful--how can he even do his cabriolets with that diaper around his middle?
LOLLL 😅😅

Australia
POB
I wish you’d do Odile. I’d like to see a truly Beautiful swan costume. Many seem so plain to me.🦢🫅
Personally I'd pick the Australian version every time. But I prefer a more modern aesthetic.
