I think it’s useful to know a little of the history of the Royal Ballet Sleeping Beauty costumes. They were designed by Oliver Messel immediately after the Second World Water. Britain was on its knees, after years of deprivation, loss and rationing, so the costumes were designed as a colourful antidote to all that had gone before. Aurora’s tutu was created for Margot Fonteyn, so its history is precious and remarkable, I think.

Yes! Thanks for sharing this, the RB has a beautiful history. We love the recordings and photos of Dame Fonteyn in this costume 🌸🫰🏻

Also when they first put on that Ballet it was right after WWII, some parts of the costumes were made out of tissue paper and paper doilies because that's all the costume department could get their hands on for notions and material. But they still wanted showcase the glamor and cheer people up after so many years of war.

I selected NYC ballet with the baby pink and flowers. Aurora is sweet, fresh, naive, and sixteen, and would be wearing beautiful and feminine but more casual dresses, not something that looks like she's going to a ball (as some of the other tutus imply, i.e. overdone). The sweetness of the baby pink tutu is how I imagine her as she meanders through the woods, singing, which attracts her prince. Had she been dressed in anything more austentatious, the prince would have questioned who she was. Her sweet misteriousness captivated him. The NYC is Aurora in the woods. The B, later, when she's back in the court, perhaps at a ball.

Thank you ladies so much for this clip😃! I'm ITA with you! All three Aurora tutus for the Bolshoi's "Sleeping Beauty" are indeed the most opulent and elegant of the set shown today. This production premiered in October 2011, the year that the Bolshoi Theatre's renovation was completed after six years of construction. This production was the first major full length ballet chosen to reopened the Theatre, and they spared no expense for the premiere. Aurora's tutus for Acts 1-3 are just magnificent. Aurora's bridal tutu in particular is exceptional and indescribablely beautiful. The wig/tiara headdresses also play a major part in these designs. In the wedding pas de deux, Aurora's wig is frosted, (as opposed to the wigs matching the natural color of the ballerina's hair in Acts 1 & 2), and the jewels in the tiaras and the tutus vividly reflect the lights. This is even more noticeable during the wedding pas de deux. The tiara along with the detailed embroidery and simulated jewels on her white satin and lace tutu seem even more dazzling. These designs were a variation on Nureyev's production (designed by Nicholas Giorgiadis) for both La Scala, and after Milan, Paris Opera Ballet. The costumes are by Franca Squarciapino, and the sets are by Ezio Frigero. This production is by Yuri Grigorovich, whose first production premiered back in 1964. The current production is his 1973 edit of the '64 production, and it's this same production, presented in two acts and four scenes, outfitted in glorious majesty. It's the most opulent production the Bolshoi has ever performed compared to the former designs of Simon Virsaladze in 1964 and 1973.
Prior to the Bolshoi productions, Simon Virsaladze designed the ballet for the Mariinsky (then KIrov) back in 1952. This is the Konstantin Sergeyev production that they still perform today. In 1999, Sergei Vikharev produced the reconstruction of the ballet. The designs and costumes were based on the original 1890 designs, and Aurora's costume for Act 1 featured a very bold red velvet bodice, pink brocade and gold tutu. This production made the careers of Diana Vishneva (who danced opening night), Svetlana Zakharova, who won the Golden Mask Award, (Russia's most prestigious theatre award - think their answer to the Tony Awards, for her interpretation of Aurora in the 1890 production); Evgenia Obraztsova and Oleysa Novikova. Alina Cojocaru also appeared as a guest Aurora with the Mariinsky in the 1890 production. This was the most opulent production they ever performed, apart from the original opening night in January 1890. It is still occaisionally revived as the "other production" at the Mariinsky. However, the 1952 remains the most popular of the two productions for Petersburgers. It is this Sergeyev production that they have both filmed and released live performance dvds. Unfortunately, the Mariinsky has never filmed or released a live performance of the complete 1890 reconstruction. The Royal Ballet, like the Mariinsky (Kirov) had to make do with scarce resources after WW2 to produce this ballet. So, that may be why the Mariinsky's Aurora tutu, and tutus for their other Petipa ballets that date from Virsaladze's era (late 40s 50s & 60s) seem minimal compared to the others that you reviewed. Another reason is that Virsaladze and all visual and peforming artists in the former USSR had to work within the boundaries of Soviet realism. This was a style of art where the boundaries set by the powers that used to be did not favor opulence or ostentation, (decadence), but had to reflect the Communist Party's ideological ideals. Therefore, minimalism was *safe* expression in that respect. Also, when you mentioned that the Mariinsky Aurora tutu looked like it could be used for a "recital," this is true. The Mariinsky's tutu designs have been used over and over for Vaganova Academy recitals, student productions and graduation performances for decades. Please consider comparing costumes and designs for "La Bayadere," "Don Q," and "Swan Lake!"

I’m glad you chose the bolshoi ballet as the winner. NOTICE: this is just me being super nitpicky and is based solely on my personal opinion. For me the NYC ballet looks a little more low effort relatively speaking. 3D flowers and appliqués are really easy and cheap to get, so even though everything was made by hand and looks incredible, it still feels a little cheap to me. Plus the main appeal of the design relies so heavily on the appliqués as well. I can’t see the tutu having much visual interest without them, which definitely isn’t a bad thing, but clean/airy/minimal isn’t exactly what comes to mind when I think of royalty. Not to mention the diagonal floral appliqué along the front of the bodice. The shape of the tutu and bodice are both so symmetrical that breaking it up with an asymmetrical line like that disrupts the harmony/balance of the rest of the design.
The costume overall is gorgeous, especially the choice of fabric for the tutu which allows for that delicate, layered tulle that I absolutely adore, not to mention the color. Like NYC’s color scheme here is IMMACULATE to say the least. It’s just I was expecting something a bit more ornate and structured considering the resources and money they have.

I agree about the tacky diagonal slash line. Otherwise, though, I love the NYCB tutu for its romantic girlishness. The Bolshoi one could be worn for a crowning, in my opinion. Less for a birthday party...

I grew up watching bolshoi ballet performances from the very late 80s. Aurora was simpler and a bit more elegant/streamlined back then. The true gem of the 80s were the fairies. They had this sheer, iridescent quality to their tutus that made it look like fairy wings. Exquisite!

  • @stanleygagner
    @stanleygagner Месяц назад +9

I think the silhouette of the Bolshoi tutu is very good. The slight downward angle and conical shape make it feel more stately and royal, but the pink color and delicate details still make it feel dreamy and light.

The Mariinsky tutus are usually very simple for the leads, I wonder if its because they think excess material or detail will distract from the technique of the ballerina in the leading role.

Please do more of these 🙏 I'm looking forward to seeing you do Odette or Odile, and Cinderella of course. I agree with your decision on this round too. Bolshoi was stunning, and screamed Aurora. That's what I'm looking for: the costume has to be lavish and what any little girl would dream their princess tutu to look like. NYC was pretty, but not "princess" enough for me. i love the american ballet theaters costume all for that bell tutu, but then you get to the upper half of the costume and it's harder to go with which is such a shame! i think bell tutus honestly would be So fitting for aurora, theyre so luxurious yet also sweet looking, and have the bonus of lending themselves to looking like ballgowns, which suits her so well. i think the sleeves on the upper half should be changed tbh, and let her have her crown, and it would be perfect in my eyes!
the bold color isnt too bad and makes your eyes go to her, but when you see her compared even to the dancers in the background, they look more royal than her, so she needs more detail to pop. of course if it was all pastel it would be just as beautiful. all this to say i think we need more bell tutus for aurora because she deserves them!
out of the finalists i prefer the new york tutu, i love the dreamy look for aurora which i think is fitting considering what happens to her haha, but theyre both very beautiful and fit in well with the scene they put her in. bless you both for having to chose between such beautiful costumes 🙏 i would love to see yall continue this series with other costumes as well if you'd be up for it!

The head of the costume departement of the Dutch National Ballet (who by the way have gorgeous costumes) told me that in Russia, labour is relatively cheap compared to fabric and materials. So they rather use cheaper leotard style bodices and replace them often than invest in rich fabrics, boning and embellishments.

i would love to work on costumes like this if i do manage to get my dream job in textile restoring!!
looks like the mariinsky often have more simplistic costumes, with minimal use of sequins and embroidery to emphasise precise parts of the body, i think the bayadère costumes were also very plain (edit: u show them too, so my memory didnt fail me, and we r thinking the same thing), which is not surprising, but now that u've shown the Aurora one, it seems to be a characteristic of theirs!!
also i love both of u two's different hairdos in the videos!! is Eden's hair naturally curly/wavy?? i've always assumed it is, its so pretty

I would say plainness is a characteristic of Soviet-time designed costumes, and Mariinsky just hasn`t replaced them due to its traditionality. I would advise to have a look at Vikharev`s productions ("reconstructions") of Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadere at Mariinsky, the costumes there are quite lavish and inspired by those from Petipa`s time

This was a fun watch! I was stuck very firmly on Bolshoi the moment it appeared, it had the right amount of elegance, richness, and majesty as befits a princess, while still keeping a light girlishness in the design (the pastel colour, but also the chiffon sleeves that are both puffed AND frilled!). I'm also a little more partial to the fact that it looks a little closer to historical accuracy in comparison to the NYC one, which, as you mentioned, looks more 'fairytale' and 'whimsical'. As a result, it looks just a tiny little bit more like a fancy dress for a party, rather than a gown made for a real princess on her 16th birthday.
Would love to see a comparison of Odette/Odile!!

Saw them again in about 2008 and I was surprised to see how cheap their tutus looked - lycra bodices with very floppy skirts that really didn't flatter the dancers. I completely agree, the Bolshoi tutu just has it in spades!

I could never chose between nyc and bolshoi!!! but i totally agree with your reasoning. I would have picked RB over Paris opera cuz i like to see the little bold details from the audience, and the sleeves!!! also i’m RAD taught, so maybe i just have subconscious bais lol. bolshoi is still better then the RB costume tho

Ugh, this was such a refreshing video to watch! I’m majoring in costume design so this was right up my alley! I couldn’t just decide on one so my top 3 would be ABT, POB, and Bolshoi! But I love the aesthetic of NYCB. I would like to see a video comparing different Kitri and Nutcracker costumes!

Like I said immediately after watching this video "that was fun." But I continued to think about your channel..... I started thinking back about your earlier videos and started wondering what ever happened to your chainsaw neighbor.
It was always kinda funny when he showed up and I miss him; he added a bit of dangerous excitement to your productions. Maybe you could bring him back and do a ballet remake of classic horror movies like "Texas Chainsaw Ballet" or "Friday the 13th: Ballerinas Escape on Point."
Just joking which is one of the things that I love about your channel -- you ladies always seem to have so much fun! 😉

I was falling for the NYCB costume, until u mentioned the music. Rose adage SCREAMS glamour and regal. And the Bolshoi Ballet's entire sleeping beauty set is immaculate, aurora looks incredible also in her white 3rd costume

Thank you for your very charming video! I agree with your end result!

My first impressions as a non-dancer, aspiring ballet nerd:
ABT - bold pink top layer shapes remind me of flower petals, and this is accentuated with the cap sleeves. Too bold a color though.
NYCB - The red on the skirt looks out of place, kind of jarring. Otherwise, OK, kind of bland.
San Francisco - dress print looks like wallpaper that would be on Wallace and Gromit's living room and I cannot discern any pink, but that could be a problem with my eyesight.
Australian - Barbie. The white fringe-y edging is not an improvement.
Mariinsky - simple, pretty, seemed very appropriate for a 16 year old shy maiden princess, but when you explained why she is supposed to look posh, it made sense why this costume is lacking.
Bolshoi - looks like a Renaissance painting.
Paris - the darker line that goes from waist to shoulder accentuates the dancer's body in a flattering way. From the angle of the still, there is probably a mirror image line on the other side, but I can't see it. Maybe it would look a bit too overwhelming though? This one would be my favorite, but it's not pink enough.
Royal - pretty but doesn't have the "it" factor.
You could make endless videos for these costumes! If that was only Aurora Scene I, there are so many acts in so many ballets, and so many costumes, you could make videos like this to infinity and beyond!
I would also enjoy male costume analyses!
Thank you very much for the lovely video! 🙏💖👑

It all boils down to personal taste. I like the Paris Opera Ballet tutu the best.
And the ABT tutu and all the other costumes in the Ratmansky version were designed to resemble costumes in late 19th and early 20th century productions.
I mean, take a look at ballet photos from those time periods. People drowned in those costumes.

In German and Dutch Aurora is called Thornrosie or (Little Thorn Rose) so there should be roses on her costume, so NY City Ballet wins it for me

For me personally, I prefer the NYCB Aurora. It reads more "16-year-old, innocent princess at her first ball" to me. Bolshoi's reads more mature, IMO.
