I read a borrowed copy of "Eaters Of The Dead" in 1982 and it resonated with me. I continued to think of it from time to time and then, in 1988, I sat down to watch a VHS with my sons. It was, of course, "The 13th Warrior," but I didn't make the connection until I watched it again the following day. I'm not so sure I would want to see a remake/reboot of this film, because if you look at the remakes/reboots of movies in the past being made today, it's like night and day, the older ones are great while the new ones just straight up suck, I know it's partially because of the different generations and we have a generation of idiots today, they would most likely make it into something with alot of stupid jokes, make it more kid/teenage friendly, difderent actors and most just wanting to hurry up and get it done before any character development is done (yes I know that's what they did with this movie), the list goes on and on. I remember I had the pleasure of watching this in the theaters when it first came out. I must have been about 12. It has the perfect amount of action, suspense, drama & humor not to mention moral. In the end, fantastic movie & will remain in my top 5.
+GilbertCarrizales In 2001 I rented this movie and watched it on VHS. I wish I saw it at the movie theatre. The 13th Warrior came out the same time as The sixth sense, I think that also maybe a reason why a lot of people didn't go see it. I love this movie too.
The movie studio did not spend a dime in promotion, considering how big Antonio Banderas was at the time and Michael Crichton's name attached if the studio had promoted it then it would have been a monster hit, everyone would consider it Banderas greatest role and the best version ever of Beowulf.
Yes Antonio, it IS a cult movie! :) Ppl are saying how it's a "men's movie" and some claim it needed more romance. No! I'm a girl and I love this movie so much that I bought it as a DVD. Throwing in more romance would make it too Hollywood and if ppl wanna see those kind of predictable stories, they know where to go. This movie is also the ONLY one that portrays Arabs from their golden era. I noticed that it was shown in an Islamic seminar, as half-time entertainment :). That is a GREAT sign of this movie being very fair to a community that the media loves to hate.
It isnt a man´s movie. its a movie that appeals to anyone with courage and dignity and belief in justice and non judgementalism. You might like "Boudicca" with Alex Kingston, to see a woman´s take on it. The dialogue is dreadful, but to see a woman compete on her own terms and actually lead men is pretty inspiring. And Boudicca was real!´Try the Clive Owen version of King Arthur too, where Guinevere fights alongside the men, albeit it in what appears to be a nightie or a leather bikini! I do take exception to that but in a way that makes her above the men, as they are in armour and there she is in sub zero temperatures in a nightie! Lol! Otherwise its a decent film, again about people fighting for their land, freedom , justice and equality. And they just make good viewing! Men rampaging about with swords to stirring music! Whats not to like? Lol!
Khwaab Good comment. Its subtle propaganda,I am Western and I dont see anyone as "other". I have Muslim friends, Sikh friends, black friends, Jewish friends,Gay friends, trandsgender friends, We are all human beings. That is all I see, a Human being. We all want the same thing. A shelter and somewhere warm, food , water, clothing, a better life for our children. There are nutcases on all sides that seek to corrupt that and will use violence to do it, but the vast majority of us are decent citizens who just want to be allowed to live our lives in peace. And help each other along the way
Khwaab , although I am not Muslim, I am from India, I agree that this movie portrays Muslims fairly. The only one to my knowledge. I had hoped when it first came out that we might see more of that. I would love to see more actual and correct depictions of us brown people from South Asia on Westward and our histories. We have given so much to the world that most in the West do not even have an awareness of. This is a great movie. I would love to get a cleaned up Blue Ray version of the Director's cut (which apparently does exist).
Khwaab , true enough. It is called White Washing. Have you seen what they did to Khan in the new Star Trek movies?! Growing up he was the closest thing I had to an Indian being portrayed heroicly (from the STTOS), even though even there they did not use Indian actors, at least they wereb't baffoons or complete caricatures. In the Wrath of Khan it was bad enough that they turned all of Khan's remaining crew into Nordic looking people.
It always makes me smile when i see this film. Because this is an idea thats just awesome, and we have a Muslim as the viewpoint. A muslim during our golden era of Islam. With Vikings as companions. How often do you see that?
Watched it actually in cinema when it came out in 1999, Vladimir ! :) Watch it and was so thrilled. To this day one of my favorites. It will always be special to me.
This is far and away my favorite movie of all time. I come back to it year after year, often watching twice in a row, and I always intend to do something else with this in the background but I'm RIVETED no matter how many times I've seen it. Like my favorite book (Riders of the Dead... the theme is similar), I feel like its lessons and theme evolve as I do. I get more out of it each year. Fantastic story, beautifully told.
I loved this movie as a kid and I'd quote scenes from it all the time! It's strange it went under the radar. The acting was superb and the scenery was beautiful. I agree with Vladimir that the actors here could have gotten much more attention. Most of the characters you don't care about. I feel like there's so much potential in this story. I hope they remake it or release a directors cut!
i rewatch the movie several times a year. I first saw it in highschool back in 2002 and loved it. and it was a real treat to see Vladimir become an actor in other Viking related work like Skyrim, Vikings, etc. Its like a wink and nod to how much his performance had on fans of the film.
Thank You Vladimir, The 13th Warrior is one of my most favorite movie of all time, i m so much into Vikings, and your role in this movie is amazing..Thanx all the best from Scotland (i m originaly from Czech republic :D )
I saw this in the cinema when it first came out. Loved it and still do. I even showed it to my students once when I was an English language teacher. Great stuff, glad to see your and the other people's interviews, they clear up a few questions I had. All the best!!
Its very heartbreaking that McTiernan and Crichton could not agree on the direction of this film. Whats amazing to me is that even with all the trouble this film had its still a GREAT movie. I hope that McTiernans cut will one day be available for the fans to watch. Thank you so much for uploading this. I Have been a big fan of this film and hopefully one day we'll get a dvd or bluray with all the extras, directors cut, and hopefully a commentary by the director and actors.
Kulich is so eloquent about his time on this movie. I would have loved to have seen McTiernan's cut, he's made some great films. I watch the 13th Warrior regularly and see something new every time.
In the arabic world that movie was one of the best films for a long years and its still that till now , amazing performance, awesome story and wonderful director 🌺🌺😍😍
One of my all-time favorite movies; It reminds me of those "epic" adventure movies from the 70's that I used to watch with my dad. Since his passing, I watch this movie at least once a year, in his honor. Glad to come across this documentary. Thank you.
Much thanks for uploading this stuff, Vladimir. This is my favorite film and I always wanted to see interviews and background details about it, since it was kind of made before the era where those things became standard.
This is among my favorite in my collected canon. Terrific, insightful interview with Mr. Kulich, even giving me more personal regret that these terrific actors and their performances fell victim to the vanity of unchecked "hollywood" egos. Mr. Kulich also said something that I've said since the first time I view this motion picture (very poetic the way he recalled McTiernan's attitude), the lack of vision in Hollywood by shelving this movie stunted the career growth of some terrific actors, specifically Dennis Storhøi as well as Vladimir Kulich. Mr. Storhøi showed terrific range in this film and I'd love to have seen him in more roles. And while it'd be easy to stereotype Mr. Kulich into Alpha-Schwarzenegger-type roles (which I'm sure he wouldn't have minded the money), seeing this interview and the obvious introspective intellect, he should also be drawn on for a great variety of roles as well. The 13th Warrior really is sad tale of what the vanity of Hollywood sycophants can do to a great film(s) and to noble men pursuing their impassioned careers...
One other thought - I know both Kulich and Storhøi are much older since this film eventually found its way into the public domain, I still would be among the first to see a film or a theatre production (it'd have to be in my home state) if either or both of these men would be the featured actor(s)...
What a lovely interview, thank you Vladimir. Its very pleasant to listen to your voice, let alone all the fine knowledge you shared with us for which Im very grateful. And I agree, this movie is very underrated, its one of my all time favorite.
did u call me a dog.".. oh man dennis charactor hergar was awesome... im glad it went unoticed at first as over the years u can see it has become a classic... would be good to get that directors cut with the extras " but alas im guessing it will never happen... fantastic movie loved it then ... still do...
John McTiernan is a director of "Actions" movies, not only for active actions such as running, fighting, shooting,...etc of the stories, but also actively express each one of these characters' personalities, emotions, strengths and weaknesses. Each role is a real character, not just a role in the show.
this was a great film and its a great shame there where so many problems making the film and that it wasnt successfull. I loved it and still think it should be remade. Vladimir you rock
Incredible. Even with all the problems stated, I love this film. I love the characters, the cast and the dialogue. I quote this movie all the time. I know many other fans. I'd love to see another cut of the film.
It was an excellent movie and casting crew did excellent job. It should be among top rated movies. I loved it so much and I loved the story and the characters
Great stuff, thank you for posting. A very underrated film but insanely memorable and enjoyable. Would love to see a true Special Edition of the movie with both cuts.
I absolutely love this movie. It's nice to see the interviews and learn more about its background and the actors. I'd like to see the director's cut if its becomes available.
Man Vladimir Kulich really gives some amazing insight into the movie's production in these clips. I completely agree with his idea of giving each of the characters a little introduction scene on the boat to make us care more about their deaths. Also it kinda sounds like the reason the film turned out as relatively well as it did was due to McTiernan's direction and more or less in spite of Crichton's and the studio's 'vision'.
Fantastic film, an epic worthy of being alongside the greatest epics of all time. A very true about character development and audience investment of each warrior. Awesome directors cut!! YES PLEASE!!!
Thanks for these videos, loved this film. Stellan is a great actor and all but there is only one Buliwyf! It would be great if we could some how have a Blue-ray release with Crichtons version and John McTiernans version as there's many that still love this film.
I was 14 when I saw it first in my local video store and it amazed me! Its definitely in my top 3 movies of all time if not first! its got a such a genuine sense of fear, being a warrior and a Man and understanding the idea of courage and nobility.
I saw it hermano.... I own it . I love it...very underated.... The cast ? Good Lord.... Imagine having to go against men like this.... Big bad strong honorable. The type we all hope to have when the crap hits the fan.... Thank you gentlemen.... Antonio. Gracias hermano....
I was in my mid-teens when this movie first came out. I became obsessed with learning about vikings around this age, but also developed something of an appreciation for Islam and the Arab world during the Golden Age of Islam. This connected in my life on a website called Ducky's, which was basically a fansite by a woman who went by the moniker Ducky online. She had a photo with Vladimir Kulich and everything. I made some friends from her guestbook "forum," including a spiritual healing practioner (hi Nita! If you ever find your way here), as well as a Muslim man from I believe a mosque in New York. I emailed back and forth with the Muslim man several times, and actually was friends with the woman for many years. One interested in a sort of pagan spirituality and connecting to the vikings, the other a Muslim who appreciated the film's treatment of the Arab culture of this era. I thought about that many durings through the "War On Terror" propaganda in my country. (The US)
Very insightful, it is such a shame they did not incorporate a lot of these things into the final product. I really would love to see a studio today make another version and do it even better.
I agree with Kulich on Dennis Storhoi. His charisma in the film is one of the best parts. If the film hadn't been buried we might have seen more of him, such a pity.
actually the movie is so popular. A subscriber posted the whole movie and got more than 6 million views but the movie was removed from RUclips probably for copy rights issues. Very underrated and very awsome.
I'm real glad I saw it in the cinema when it came out in 1999. Just because I had read a review in a British fantasy magazine that said it was really good.
So weird to hear and read about all the issues the crew had and the tension between director and studio /writer. I saw it when it came out without knowing any of this and loved every bit, still do. Would love to see the directors cut tho. Anyway one of my favourite films, thanks to all who made it!
THANK YOU McTiernan for being SO brave and telling the truth about the ugly, racist face of Hollywood! I cannot express how much this movie means to me. I'm a "Scandinavian Muslim" and growing up, I literally went through the kind of scene in which Banderas is bullied, ridiculed and challenged. Several times, in school and then at work. Although I have to say....there are more kindhearted Scandinavians than racist ones. The scene where he finally gets enough and retorts "At least I know who my father is" made me hold my hand over my mouth, like "Nooo, he didn't just say that?!". Also, when the ignorant Viking was making fun of the Full Blood Arab horse (the most precious horse breed) and Antonio got up and showed him....I wanted to applaud! The red haired guy did such a great job there with his expressions. But I have to say, most of all, I think Dennis Storhøi created the most memorable character. He looks the part, speaks the part and played the part of "happy go lucky" Scandinavian perfectly.
The insights that you have shared have blown me away. The truth that you have told make me angry because Dennis blew me away in this film and should have been in more films. The story about the bowl scene would have been awesome because the scene really did just lie flat.
Very interesting interviews of an outstanding movie. Vladimir's analysis is right on. If both director's had implemented his suggestions the flick would've turned out even better. I lean towards the director's cut --- adding more things Arab. BTW, the scene with the washing with the spit et al is factual. That was part of the Viking's "hygiene." Ahmad Ibn Fadlan did indeed encounter the Vikings, whom he called "Rusiyyah." He described them with "near perfect bodies . . . tall as palm trees" and whose singing he compared to the "bark of dogs." PS: I think Mr. Kulich would make a fine director himself.
My dad is a deacon in the Catholic Church and actually based one of his sermon's around the prayer in the movie. It was one of the few times people have come up to him afterwards and told him that it was a great sermon. Yes, this is one of my favorite movies of all time but no one ever returns it after borrowing it from me.

Great movie!
I can always feel keen to watch it
I’ve watched this movie so many times, thank you!
They really need to release the Director's Cut of this film.
I love this movie...never get tired watching it over and over..
i rewatch the movie several times a year.
This film is excellent - love it ! Thanks for posting this. I bought it on VHS & then DVD & probably watch it at least twice a year.
Seen this movie so many damn times I know all the words. Great performances from everybody
Absolutely my favorite movie of all time
These larger than life charachtures are so easy to be drawn to . This is worth watching .good movie
Kulich is so eloquent about his time on this movie. I would have loved to have seen McTiernan's cut, he's made some great films. I watch the 13th Warrior regularly and see something new every time.
I went to see it in the theater. It is still one of my favorite movies.
My fav movie of all time. Vladimir's character is a movie icon.and with all the comments below that agree, thank u for seeing this movie as i see it
The final scene merited a best actor oscar or at the very least a nomination. It deserved to be your breakthrough movie. Fate is fickle.
This movie became my number 5 all time greats
This movie is Legendary and one of my favourite ones...
In the arabic world that movie was one of the best films for a long years and its still that till now , amazing performance, awesome story and wonderful director 🌺🌺😍😍
It’s a childhood favorite of mine. Saw it in theatre and it was great. It may be underrated, but those who know know.
One of my all-time favorite movies; It reminds me of those "epic" adventure movies from the 70's that I used to watch with my dad. Since his passing, I watch this movie at least once a year, in his honor. Glad to come across this documentary. Thank you.
I would love it if there was an extended cut of this movie.
One of my favourites. Interesting background story. Thank you.
Much thanks for uploading this stuff, Vladimir. This is my favorite film and I always wanted to see interviews and background details about it, since it was kind of made before the era where those things became standard.
The studio and Michael Crichton could not have been more wrong about not wanting to cast you. This movie is criminally under rated!
Its an amazing movie, and you were amazing in it Antonio
This is a very underrated movie, please treat yourself, watch this. It might change everything. Low there.
I saw this in the theaters. So amazing
I wish we could get our director's cut!
Just an amazing film. Fantastic
What a lovely interview, thank you Vladimir. Its very pleasant to listen to your voice, let alone all the fine knowledge you shared with us for which Im very grateful. And I agree, this movie is very underrated, its one of my all time favorite.
did u call me a dog.".. oh man dennis charactor hergar was awesome... im glad it went unoticed at first as over the years u can see it has become a classic... would be good to get that directors cut with the extras " but alas im guessing it will never happen... fantastic movie loved it then ... still do...
This movie it's a masterpiece, i love it, i watch it very often.
I love this movie. I've watched it more than any other movie. I'd love to see you and Dennis in Vikings.
i watch this movie at least 3 times, each year. this is a great movie with a great soundtrack. and acting is amazing
One of my top 50 movies ever. Loved it
Incredible. Even with all the problems stated, I love this film. I love the characters, the cast and the dialogue. I quote this movie all the time. I know many other fans.
I'd love to see another cut of the film.
It was an excellent movie and casting crew did excellent job. It should be among top rated movies. I loved it so much and I loved the story and the characters
it is a true story, mind you
I'm legit descendant, and this is STILL the best Viking film.
Yup I love this gem, very underrated.
One of my favorite action movies, Mr. Kulich. Love it. Whichever version it is.
Thanks for uploading these!
I loved this movie. I want to see the other cut soon
One of my all time favorites.
(The US)
All actors did a phenomenal job. Has been a favorite since it came out.
Very underrated movie , actualy the best viking movie in my opinion.
Very insightful, it is such a shame they did not incorporate a lot of these things into the final product. I really would love to see a studio today make another version and do it even better.
I loved 13th Warrior!!
This is a F@$%^G AWESOME movie, thank you so much for making it.
Love 13th worrier, wish I could see it uncut. Good job on interviews !
I love this movie! I used to watch it over and over of VHS
I agree with Kulich on Dennis Storhoi. His charisma in the film is one of the best parts. If the film hadn't been buried we might have seen more of him, such a pity.
This is one of my favorite movies.
actually the movie is so popular. A subscriber posted the whole movie and got more than 6 million views but the movie was removed from RUclips probably for copy rights issues. Very underrated and very awsome.
My favorite movie. I've watched it at least once a month for the last decade and can probably quote the entire script from start to finish.
2021. I could watch it 10x today after all 200 x and I would enjoy it.
I like dennis too. And glad to know a scandinavian muslim.
I love these interview videos
We should all demand the director's cut for the 25th anniversary
The insights that you have shared have blown me away. The truth that you have told make me angry because Dennis blew me away in this film and should have been in more films. The story about the bowl scene would have been awesome because the scene really did just lie flat.
I remember watching this overseas. It was amazing
It is an interesting and entertaining movie. It is one of my favorites!
One of my favorite movies. I always wondered why the critics couldn't love this the way I did.
