Vladimir this was and remains today an amazing movie!!! Your portrayal of Buliwyf was magnificent!!! You are a tremendous actor, thank you for all your hard work. For the record I saw this movie in the theater and was blown away.
How this movie was a financial disaster, it is beyond me. We're talking about a film which laid the path about how movies like this are supposed to be made. The atmosphere in this film is second to none! The cast is absolutely magnificent! The music is excellent! But people of course will go wherever the media steer them to. Cause people (well....most of people) are stupid and easily manipulated. My advice......when you see one of those lowlifes called critics putting down a movie, that means is a must watch!
+IsaakTheGreek: HEY!! Don't lump me in with the other fucking sheeple man, I LIKED this movie!! First saw it for free here on #RUclips, and have since bought it on #iTunes; and for the record, I don't know why Omar Sharif hated his role as Melchisidek, sure it's a small part, but that's because the story required a younger man to play Ahmed Ibn Fadhalan, not some old fogey, even if Omar Sharif ROCKS as an actor.....
The most famous actor in this movie was Antonio Banderas, and he was just at the beginning of his career at Hollywood, the rest of the actors were mostly European.
Over the years the movie has gained a cult following elevating its status. I am still holding out hope that one day we will get an extended Directors cut.
It doesn't need much. Literally couple of minutes for the Buliwyf's funeral akin the the beginning how they all met, bringing us full circle. Then a slightly longer farewell scene. Done.
Such a cool movie, I watch it all the time, and I still find it enjoyable, and I still notice new things! This was one of the last movies before the era of CGI took over.
I come back and revisit this movie every so many years since its first release. Now, in my 30's I have a whole new appreciation! Watched it two days ago in my home theater and I WAS BLOWN AWAY. The musical score, the atmosphere created, rumbling of hundreds of horses approaching, THE RUMBLING OF THE WATERFALL. An absolute masterpiece.
One of my favourite movies of all time The whole cast is so REALLY AUTHENTIC VIKING ! I HAVE WATCHED IT MANY TIMES AND NEVER GET TIRED TO WATCH IT AGAIN
One of the few movies where I immediately felt that adding an hour to its story would have been a great improvement. Parallel storylines and plots galore. Great movie, still one of my faves. Love the theme, play on disparity, the exploration of myth and legend, the way they portrayed Banderas learning the language, etc.
Saw it in the theater, bought the VHS, bought the DVD... STILL one of my all-time fave films!!! "The dog can jump!" Gotta love the Vikings' sense of humor! "There will be fog..." Wonderfully eerie atmosphere! "We'll miss Angus tonight. We'll miss his sword." Buliwyf actually learned the name of the man he had chosen to be a "lesson" to the prince -- he was Angus, not just "the redhead", as Herger called him. "When you die, can I give [your sword] to me daughter?" Hey, the sword WORKED! Antonio Banderas turned out a wonderful, believable performance as the Middle Eastern "fish out of water" in the far North. "I LISTENED." A gifted scholar and poet who did justice to recording Buliwyf's deeds. {I still can't believe all the critics who completely misinterpreted "Arab, speak what I draw," thinking that Buliwyf had been tutored in reading/writing while on board the ship. No, he probably had a photographic memory, where he studied the writing briefly and was able to reproduce it in the sand when the ship landed -- he deliberately left off the little tail of the final word to see if Ahmed would correct it (thus proving that he could "draw sounds" and "speak them back"), and when Ahmed excuses himself to Buliwyf before correcting the omission, Buliwyf gives a nod of satisfaction -- the Arab wasn't faking being able to read and write; he was the real thing.} Now I really want to pull out my DVD... 😺💕🐾
Bring back movies like this! There is only an extremely low amount of CGI in this movie and I can live with that since Im no fan of cgi! (The arab jumping with his horse over another horse). This movie reminds me of Conan the Barbarian with Arnold from back in the day :)
Thanks for these interviews and recollections of this underrated adventure movie. I just viewed Ironclad and was delighted to see your role in it and enjoyed the movie thoroughly. 13th warrior has always been the perfect action/adventure movie for me, I view it on a yearly basis. Every character seems real rather than fantasy, even the "monsters" turn out to be real. The story is told intelligently (love the transition when Banderas learns the warrior's language) and succinctly. A+ soundtrack
I own the 13th Warrior and watch it regularly; it is hands down one of my favourite films. I love what you and Dennis Storhøi brought to your characters in this movie. My wish would be to see you two in another film together.
Great movie, interpretation of the legend, the book is great, and wonderful interpretation by Vladimir Kulich. A much more real and heroic depiction of male strength than is found in Hollywood action films. The legend lives on!
LOOOOOVE this movie! I believe Ibn Fadhlan's character was based on the real guy Ibn Batuta, who travelled well beyond the Arabian borders and is rumoured to have met Vikings. As a Muslim, I think Banderas was the perfect choice. He has the interest, the respect and the friendliness to do justice to it. And yes looks too. The Moors ruled Spain for 100s of years and Banderas spoke about this in an interview too. As for the vikings. I could immediately tell who was a native speaker of either Norwegian or Swedish (only Norwegian was spoken in the movie though). So the non-Scandinavians did okay but I'm sorry, could've done better. Other than that, they did GREAT! Though Vladimir doesn't seem to be Scandinavian, he did an amazing job at playing the stereotype that is very much true even today: The reserved, quiet and seldom speaking Scandinavian who doesn't boast but rather likes to just do the job :).
Vladimir Kulich had such an impact on The 13th Warrior that I'm surprised he didn't get more leading roles in films. These actors were some of the best from their countries, England, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.
I am now a big fan of this wonderful movie. The script is to die for. What writing, directing and acting! Why did not this win an Academy Award for best picture?
I love how many ascpects there is to this movie. The different characters, the journey, the land and landscape, the mysterious "eaters of the dead", the over-the-top vikings.
For me this movie means a lot. My Grandfather was from Norway and my older brother is half Iranian. I always pictured him as the Arab and me as Bullvie!
I think vladimir is a very charismatic, handsome man! And that movie was very VERY underrated.Brilliant performances by all actors and actresses, wonderful music, exceptionnal director..i can't stop watching it..
Vladimir Kulich, you were fantastic in that role, and no Skarsgard could have done it better. Despite what happened to the movie, you were the best of them, you were their leader, you were their king!
Think I've watched this movie over 20 times over the years. So so underrated, possibly before its time, as if it was released in past 5 years we would have been talking block buster and quite rightly. The cast was perfect especially bullvine something very stoic, powerful and almost less said the better about him. My top 5 movies ever that's considered a flop by critics and is basically unknown by too many but I don't care. 👍
A true epic, capturing the awe, the adventure, the culture and the magic like th3 great old films (ten commandments, cleopatra, etc) - my go to film to immerse myself in awesomeness
I like this movie, have liked it since the first time i watched on vcr, not in a theater unfortunately. The publicity campaign for it was laughable. I wish it to be longer, not for more action scenes but for more dialogue, more banter between the 13,generally more of the things that take place between the battles.Great job with these extras.
When I first saw the movie, I was young. Mostly when it came out. I remember it being in the theaters and neither parent of mine would take me to it. I've always had a connection with the Norse people. Perhaps I have some Norwegian in me. At the same time, Antonio Banderas was one of my favorites during that time. Vladimir Kulich, Dennis Storhoi, and Tony Curran suddenly become more of my favorites.
Thank you for uploading this, it was very interesting to hear what from the different perspectives. :) And it is really a pity there is no DC out there yet. I can assure you that this is indeed a cult movie and many people love it and rewatch it regularly. We are basically waiting for the DC since years! I would kill for it. Well, okay, maybe I would not go on a killing spree but I would definitely pay goo money for the DVD. ^_^
I really loved this movie. It was incredibly well cast. I love Stellan Skarsgård but I’m glad he couldn’t do it. Vladimir Kulich was perfect in this movie.
Excellent movie! Never saw it in the theater, wish I did. I break this movie out at least once a year and research it. If an extended edition ever came out. I wouldn't think twice about not purchasing it.
Still to date, it is the most pivotal under-rated film undertaking, as it resonated deep in my mythical craving; I viewed as a audience repeatedly in 99" while Everybody else in high school (A.D.D. & on illogical Lower-soul vibration) left to go so called "party"; But as I beheld it, and first laid my eyes upon it, I displayed imagination & emotion and I beg your forgiveness.
I loved the movie. As a Nordic man myself, I was very drawn to the story of Vikings going to the rescue of a village from man-eating creatures. I was really young when I saw it, and at the time, I only knew of two actors in the film: Antonio Banderas and Tony Curran.
Just finished reading Eaters of the Dead. Fantastic book, but I was exposed to the film theThirteenth Warrior before hand. This movie is fantastic, anyone that likes LOTR will love this to death.
I didn’t know of this movie until one or two years ago. Love it. Kinda weird it’s not very known here in Norway if not at all. Wish there where more movies like this.
Funny, I just watched this the other night on RUclips. I've seen this now somewhere more than a dozen times. It's one of my all time favorite movies and certainly my most favorite Antonio Banderas performance. The actors were all just brilliant in their roles from the smallest part to the lead roles. No offense to Skarsgård but I don't think a well known Hollywood actor could have pulled off the role that Vladimir Kulich gave. If you haven't seen this movie, do yourself a favour and watch it. I think you'll be blown away. I wasn't aware it was a book though, so I think I'll give that a read on the strength of the movie.
"At least I know who my father was, you pig eating son of a goat" The camp scene where he learns to speak their language is epic. "The dog can jump, hahahaha!" Love this movie
This is without a doubt, Antonio Banderas best movie. I can't stop watching it. It is a masterpiece.
Totaly disagree! Not the same kind bur look at his roles inAlmodovar movies,he act on spanish.....Matador(masterpiece)
This movie and Mask of Zorro are perfect films.
Assassins was a good movie too.
This is my favourite too. I’m not familiar with his Spanish language films.
VERY underrated movie.Definitely one of my favourites.

Great movie

Over the years the movie has gained a cult following elevating its status. I am still holding out hope that one day we will get an extended Directors cut.
Yes, please!
Yes, it used to be on sky often and would scare the hell out of me as a kid
Loved this movie ever since i saw it when it first came out.
You and me both, hope each year this is the one we get some massive 3 hour cut.
It doesn't need much. Literally couple of minutes for the Buliwyf's funeral akin the the beginning how they all met, bringing us full circle. Then a slightly longer farewell scene. Done.
Epic movie.... Cast was perfect, movie is my top 5 greatest..
+Stiverson Bill Yeah, its too bad it did got such little attention
I'm glad Kulich got the part!
Such a cool movie, I watch it all the time, and I still find it enjoyable, and I still notice new things! This was one of the last movies before the era of CGI took over.
Dennis Storhoi as Herger... possibly the most badass Viking character EVER!!!
This is a great movie..i dont know why they gave this movie a poor review.
This movie was amazing!! a movie you can rewatch over and over. The characters are all so memorable and the story is exciting.
I too am so blown away with this MASTERPIECE Of a MOVIE.. EVERY SCEEN!!

A young Vladimir Kulich would have been the best choice for a Conan reboot!, just give him a black wig or dye his hair and there you had it.
Ulfric! Where have you been?!

thank you, john mctiernan: I have watched this movie dozens of times, and still love it: one of my 5 favorite films!

Absolute masterpiece. From actors, through camera work to soundtrack.

Watching this movie since 1999.

Vladimir Kulich can even be all medieval warrior.
Penultimate quest movie. The learning of the language scene engulfs the viewer. This movie and the actors ate highly underrated
Fired your agent because he was lazy, that makes me smile every time I hear that!
