BMW Convertible roof not opening | BMW F33 Convertible roof problems fills with water when it rains

- Опубликовано: 6 мар 2021
- This is a 435d BMW F33, which has come to us for inspection / diagnosis. Driver was complaining the convertible roof not working, the stereo not working and there was a message displayed on the dash "chassis problem, possible to drive".
We started the investigation by doing a code scan to see what fault codes were in the ECU. Below are the faults we got:
288B00 - Power Management, closed circuit current violation
420641 - Parking lock defectively engaged
480A90 - DSC roller brake test mode active
805381 - ASD : Internal control unit fault
Every time the convertible roof switch was pressed, we were getting a message on the dash saying the roof was not engaged, even tho the roof was engaged, nothing further happened.
Upon closer inspection in the boot, we found excessive amount of water
collecting in the boot, which was totally soaking the control modules, stereo control module, the relays, the roof motor and the battery.
We drained out the water and allowed the control units to dry out before further testing was carried out. we found both the relays was not working, no communication with the control units, the pump would work intermittently when direct supply was put to it.
This is a very expensive repair, so we advised the driver to contact the BMW dealership and get some explanation as we believe this is a manufacturing / design flaw and should be covered under warranty.
Vehicle is currently with the local BMW dealership and we're waiting for some feedback from them. Once we have any news we will upload another video for you all.

I agree - you either design it so water can't get in; or you design it so any water that gets in, can get out without causing damage; or both!
Very interesting..! Looking forward to the outcome..!
Check out the latest video on what happened
if its the pump $2500 additional not $1000 as I wrote. 2 plugs on each side and 2 plugs in the TRUNK, one on each side .The more questions you ask the more you find out. Thank you all for your replies. I will keep you updated.
Ur best in the world pj 😉😉🙏
The drain hole underneath are blocked , you need to remove the sill cover & remove the drain holes then drill the drain hole out so water gets out!!
By which time, the damage is done
Depends on how long it’s been sat there & how much there is in there🤔
I did my F83 M4 comp cab the day I purchased it just to be sure!👌
@@darrenboston342 well this vehicles drain holes was completely clear. So go figure
Wow bmw what is going on with this one! Obviously the warranty has just run out it’s like it’s in the system to fail as soon as warranty expires 🤔 hope this vehicle is salvageable as they are beautiful cars. This video though, this is top tier and shows everyone that you guys throughly inspect vehicles to high standards. Well done team tgh 🙌
Quality just isn't what it used to be
Very shocked with this, hoping bmw come up with more than just an explanation!
I have to defend BMW on this one. As a BMW owner myself. Clearly this vehicle was not well kept at all. It's a 2016 and I think it was never washed once. It is absolutely filthy. That tells you a lot often how it was maintained. I can tell you from currently owning this vehicle myself with zero issues, the body gaps on the trunk look entirely off. The trunk fit is very poor. Even the slightest bit of misalignment will cause water intrusion. It was very likely in an accident at some point and the body shop did a horrible repair. Obviously the vehicle is not leaving the factory with even the remote possibilities of a water leak, much less 5 inches of water soaking the electronics. This is the result of obvious owner neglect a vehicle for 5+ years.
Interesting comment. I can appreciate what you said about this vehicle in particular, but this is a common problem on majority of this model and surely they can't all have been in a collision
@@TGHCUSTOMS Yes you are correct. This is a high maintenance type vehicle. It's not really for someone who just wants to turn the key and drive, and not worry about maintenance, like a Toyota driver. There are a few tricks of the trade in owning this vehicle that require special attention. Every 3-6 months, all the rubber seals/weather stripping from the convertible top and windows need to be lubricated. You need to open the top about halfway and stop it, to get the easiest access to do the job. You also cannot let any leaves or debris collect, which has a big tendency to happen in the upper trunk area, under the hood and door jams. If you don't clean or wash your vehicle often, you'll completely miss this and the drain holes will get plugged, causing major water issues. Also the rear (side) glass is a common problem for water intrusion. The water flows down the glass, behind the seal trim, instead of over it and off the side of the car. It's just dried out trim from age and sun exposure, not making a close, tight seal against the window. That's why the lubrication of all the rubber and trim on this car is key. It also prevents all the common creaking sound you hear on the interior when you go over bumps with the top up and windows closed.
@@marksmith5696 so surely bmw needs to notify the owner of what they need to do to avoid this issue. Who really has this much time to do all that work. Average job blog will not. But you have hit the nail on the head with the solution
@@marksmith5696 I have noticed this myself, what would be the best thing to lubricate with?
@@seabee1827 check out the latest video on what you need to do to keep it waterproof
Do we get a part 2 on this one my guy? 🤞🏼 this has caught my attention on a different level ..
It all depends on how bmw responds to our finding and how they deal with this design failure
Part 2 out NoW go check it out
Appreciate for uploading this video.
Question...what were the details of those relays for the convertible roof?
I’m collecting my used approved bmw 4 series in 3 days. Going to check for any signs for this issue 👍
Watch the second video on how to prevent the issues
(2016 bmw428ix) Yes I found a service repair guy who is familiar with the problem and will take it on. I'll report back when that is done. (hopefully Fri) However, one more thing to consider, the bmw' dealer service guy' told me, there are 4 plugs to enlarge,, 2 on each side AND that the $2400 price for window regular and enlarging the plug holes on the bottom ....does not mean the top will work and SAYS IF ITS THE PUMP add 1000. So I'm hoping the new regulator will fix the top but its becoming like what then.? I'll be back.
The suspense is killing us. Please 🙏 keep us posted
By the way, after writing BMW and explaining it all, got no where. They dont want to know about it and will not pay anything towards the fix. Even thought its their design flaw and defect. Wrote to National Hightway and Safety....and no response.
You just have to keep pursuing and persisting. They will keep fobbing you off
Yes the dumb drain holes. Dealer told me they have to drill the holes larger and seal it with a silicone and I also need a motor for the window becaue the water shorted it. $2400.
It is cheaper to get the motor replaced by the independent garage. Its lot cheaper. Have done loads
@@TGHCUSTOMS Where is the location of the motor. I'll follow your advice
@@ilvsurfin you need to remove the door card's
@@TGHCUSTOMS door cards's ,meaning door panel? I'll let you know how it goes.
@ilvsurfin yes the door panel
Interesting video if not a worry!! I to have a 435d convertible . Don't drive it mutch but when we did no sound, turns out water go in and blow the Amp. Was repaired under warrantee and promised there were no leaks from the main dealer. One week later go in the car and guess what no sound again, car back to the dealer and guess what water in the AMP so needed to be replaced again. Its been raining this week so fingers crossed. Being an Electrical Engineer what idiot puts modules low down answer BMW had the same issue in a 640d
Exactly what I said... I'm an electrical engineer too and was my first thought... Design engineer failed
I have a 2006 z4 have replaced the convertible motor once already was told its a design defect by bmw. Now it happened again and bmw wants $5000 to replace it. Water gets into the motor compartment and it burns the motor out. Was thinking about a 4 but not any more. Thank you!!!!
I have uploaded a second video to this. Have a watch of that. It may help prevent the water ingress... Unfortunately BMW will not admit to the design flaw
had the same problem with my BMW. Fancy putting all the electrical stuff in an area of high risk.
I have seem problem whit back panel fuul off whater
😮☝🏼 thats shocking man
We were totally shocked when we found it... Wasn't expecting that much water
@@TGHCUSTOMS looks like the river Thames took a detour man wtf
This is a known problem, remove the drain plugs at the rear of the car located under the side trim as these get blocked and water stays in the rear quarters of the car, eventually the doors fill up so much that it spalshes over into the rear of the car and all over the electrics as shown in this video, this is a design fault which BMW know about as they released a advisory on this but never a recall google SI B51 33 16 this is there answer absolute joke. This has happend to my car and now cant retract the roof as it has rusted the regulator wire out causing the rear window to drop and you can only replace this part with the roof down. Worst car ever
Same customer had exactly the same issue. Just literally last week we changed the complete regulator and the wiring, everything internally by the side got corroded. Was going to upload another video but decided not to
My window regulator gone but roof stuck closed so not sure how to fix it. Any idea how to take off the roof manually ?
It's fairly complicated. The pump is in the boot and you need to put it in the manual mode
I've just drained the water I have this same model 2018 version, all the waters out but my window keeps on sticking, is there a easy fix for that or is the motor gone? Also, did bmw get back to you?
Watch part 2 of this video... there is a maintenance solution on it
@@TGHCUSTOMS how did you get bmw to pay for costs? They're telling me to bring it in to look at it, I think if I do that they'll shaft me and make me pay for even just looking at it then the cost to repair the rear window
@fimz you have to play the long game. Speak to the managers highlight the issues and threaten to go to trading standards and ombudsman and social media. They will try to fob you off, but you have to be firm and assertive. This is clearly a manufacturing issue which they are well aware of.
huge engineering faux paux for years
We have a 2018 440i, hopefully we don't ever have this problem!!!
You will if you don't follow the maintenance plan we highlighted in our 2nd video. Which is the follow up on this video... There is also 3rd to follow. So unfortunately it just gets worse
Great video thanks
Anyone needs instruction with convertible top up and window not rolling down. You need to use a diagnostic OBD tablet (I use Autel MqxiCOM mk808) plugs into car OBD port, go through menu to command car to put convertible top on service mode, once in service mode, you can open the convertible using the open button on the car. If top acting weird after replaced the window regulator, then you have to go through the menu to initialise power window regulators. I hope this helps anyone who got a broken window regulator flooded inside the rear quarter panel.
Some great advice 👌
Do you mean use the obd tablet before you changing the regulator? Or after
@fimz before you change. You only need obd tablet if convertible top can't be open when you use the open top switch in the car.
@@bus2themoon875 I tried it but my window keeps sticking, so it still won't work, probably need to replace the motor, headache
@@TGHCUSTOMS got a new regulator motor 60 quid fixed the window working now
I have a 2016 428.. having a really hard issue.. the plastic components of the roof came off/ broke of the roof… bmw response was: sorry it happens!!
WTF…. So now my car is a pool…. Suckssssssss … how can the roof break like this …. 🤯
That affected the sound system of the car…(doesn’t work no more) .. very frustrating
I feel your pain and frustration...
Ik heb ook 428ix cabrio ,nu heb ik de zelfde probleem 😢 😢
hardop werkt niet meer ,wat moet ik het repareren
Hi there
Ihave same problem what i have to do? Can u help me?
Drains under the sills just forward of the rear wheels on both sides are obstructed by the side skirts. This allows water to collect in the sills and eventually it backs up into the boot. Need to unclip the side skirts, pull out drain plugs and clean them or get rid of them entirely and then cut holes in plastic under tray and side skirt so these don't stop the water coming out. Vids on YT about it.
Have you got water log in the boot
👏👏👏👌🎉

How did this finish up ..I've the same problem with my M4

This is a common fault BMW X5 had it so did the 1 series coupe so does the 7 5 and 3 series f cars
Indeed... And yet bmw haven't changed anything in the design
Ahh just when I already put a deposit down for one 😥
🤦Best of luck. Make sure to take out extended warranty
As usual a $2 drain destroys $2000 of electronics
Spot on
its normal on these cars,
had to make drain holes on the right spots.
How can that be normal and acceptable ... Clearly its a design flaw which BMW needs to rectify as they are clearly aware of it. This is a very expensive repair
We made the drain holes just to get some of the water out...
@@TGHCUSTOMS surely an expensive repair but they are not much bothered about this. They should come up for recall.
@@TGHCUSTOMS we did it and trust me, Customer was pissed but there is no other way to fix it
@@baautos9029 totally agree hence why I sent the customer directly to bmw for explanation and hopefully embarrass bmw into doing something about it
Same shii water in both rear panels fried my amp in the trunk.. I’m still making payments on this sob.. needs to be recalled.. I will file a lawsuit
I'll second that motion
Did anything come from that lawsuit?
What are all the found in back?
Ya’allah 🤦🏽♂️
