  • Dr. Jeff Kuhn got his PhD in physics from Princeton University in 1981, but he researches many branches of astrophysics ranging from theories of gravity to studies of the Sun. He joined the UH Institute for Astronomy (IfA) 13 years ago at the Institute for Astronomy on Maui, where he built a world-leading research facility aimed at unravelling the mysteries of the Sun. His research is recorded in more than 200 publications and books and he leads or co-leads several efforts to build novel astronomical telescopes and instruments. The most important will be the world's largest Solar telescope, the Daniel K. Innoue Telescope now being built on Haleakala. He co-lead an important and effective undergraduate workforce development program on Maui (called "The Akamai Workforce Initiative") and he continues to explore active learning techniques in the astrophysics graduate courses he's developed over the last two decades. Dr Kuhn is the recipient of more than two dozen research grants, a Sloan Foundation Fellowship, and a Senior Humboldt Prize from Germany. He lives in Upcountry Maui, near the road to the summit of Haleakala.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Great talk, one of my favorites by far. Two issues, one technical the other philosophical. The audio of this video only outputs from the left speaker which is kind of frustrating. I checked other videos and it seems to be only this one with this issue. I'm sure there must be a way to fix this, although I haven't the knowledge to do so. More to the point of the presentation, a multitude of staggering statistics are presented that I find phenomenal but I feel education wasn't tied into the presentation as well as it could have been. I'd love to see another TED talk by Dr. Kuhn with a greater emphasis on how students can be influenced to take on the growing demand of STEM careers in the coming decades while still incorporating his existential perspective.

For anyone who doesn't know what existential intelligence means, take this as an example:
